Undergraduate Academic Council Minutes
Meeting: Wednesday, November 3, 2010. 2:00-2:50 PM.

Guests: Brett Bowles, Karen Chico Hurst, Sue Phillips, and Greg
Stevens.
Review of the Minutes: Minutes from 10/27 meeting were approved
as amended.
Chair’s Report: The Chair provided the summary of the Senate
Executive Council’s meeting from this week.
Brett Bowles, Associate Professor of French, presented data exploring
(see attached) what impact the deactivation of the French, Italian,
Russian, Classics, and Theatre departments might have on the
undergraduate student population. UAC members questioned
statements suggesting that students will have difficulty completing the
Global Studies major, meeting General Education requirements, and
graduating on time. It was noted that there are alternatives to the
completion of the Globalization Major that do not require coursework
from the five targeted programs.
A member commented that the General Education Committee had
spoken to LLC regarding the second semester language requirement.
It was noted that there is ongoing discussion about the continued
availability of language courses that could be utilized to fulfill the
university general education requirement (within these programs).
Additionally, it was noted that the data presented by Professor Bowles
contained inaccuracies regarding profitability of the University in the
High School program.
