Minutes of the Council meeting of November 21, 2016, 1:00PM, UAB320

1.
Draft Minutes from the October 24, 2016 meeting were approved by the Council, without 
amendment, by a vote of 7-0-3.
2.
Dean’s Report – Dean Kevin Williams offered no report in the interest of using the Council’s time
to review the two academic standing cases coming before the Council.

Chair’s Report – Chair Fossett offered no report in the interest of using the Council’s time to 
review the two academic standing cases coming before the Council.
4.
Curriculum & Instruction Committee (CC&I) Report – J. Giboney
Prof. Giboney summarized the report of the CC&I regarding proposed changes to the PhD 
program in Physics, modifying to core requirements, replacing PHY507 with PHY539, to 
correspond with changes to the MS Physics program approved in April 2016.  The Council voted 
to accept the report and approve the changes therein by a vote of 10-0-0.
5.
Academic Standing Cases
Two petitions from former students were considered by the Council, acting as a committee of 
the whole, in light of the absence of an established GAC Committee on Admissions & Academic 
Standing.  Confidential notes regarding both cases are supplemental to these minutes.
The Council acted on Case 2016-17-1 to deny a petition for reinstatement.
The Council acted on Case 2016-17-2 to effectively deny a petition for grade change.
