PROPOSAL TO CHANGE THE NAME OF THE DEPARTMENT OF EARTH AND
ATMOSPHERIC SCIENCES TO DEPARTMENT OF ATMOSPHERIC AND
ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCES
IT IS HEREBY PROPOSED THAT THE FOLLOWING BE ADOPTED:
1.
That the name of the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences be changed to the
Department of Atmospheric and Environmental Sciences
2.
That this proposal be forwarded to the Interim President for Approval
RATIONALE:
With the suspension of admission to the Geological Sciences programs at both the undergraduate
and graduate level, the title “Earth and Atmospheric Sciences” is misleading since the “Earth”
portion suggests Geology. Furthermore, the department has a growing number of students in the
environmental areas. The new name would reflect the actual emphasis of the department.
