for their research on
Trustworthy Artificial Intelligence
___________
How do we calibrate trust in
artificial intelligence?
Professor Jason D’Cruz
Department of Philosophy
Prof. D’Cruz will discuss the “surface problem” of AI trustworthiness (creating AI that people will trust) and the “hard problem” of AI trustworthiness (calibrating human trustingness to AI trustworthiness). Solving the hard problem requires AI systems that can continuously monitor and assess their own dynamic function and then generate signals that are legible to both humans as well as other AI systems about what they can (and cannot) be trusted to do. This property - “rich trustworthiness” - is a step beyond “comprehensibility” since the AI system is tasked with producing accurate and legible signals about precisely which dependencies it can and cannot respond to.

Towards fair, robust, and privacy-preserving machine learning
Professor Yiming Ying
Department of Mathematics and Statistics
Prof. Ying will discuss how Machine learning (ML) has strived to optimize the accuracy (generalization) and efficiency which already brought transformative impact in many application domains. He will discuss the recent trend of developing trustworthy ML algorithms for high-stakes applications where many trust-metrics were proposed in terms of fairness, robustness, and privacy. Prof. Ying will present both theoretical and algorithmic aspects of his recent work along this important research direction. In particular, he will explain how stability, which is a central concept in ML theory, can serve as a common ground to study the interaction between different pillars of trust.

The Research Coffee Hour provides a cordial setting for UAlbany faculty scholars, researchers, staff, and students to informally talk about their research and scholarship or any area of professional lif e . The conversation leader provides information or personal experience related to the title of their short presentation. Everyone is encouraged to share their experience related to research/scholarship, collaborations, or extramural funding and to inform colleagues about one’s recent discoveries, and new grants.
