Summer is just around the corner. Many offices have employment opportunities for students. I wanted to remind everyone of the new UAlbany Policy on Student Assistant Employment issued in December. This applies to all hourly Student Assistant hires including those hired to satisfy obligations under an MOU.
The notable changes:
• Student Assistants may only work up to 25 hours per week during breaks (including summer). A maximum of 20 hours per week during the academic year while classes are in session still applies.
• Student Assistants may work more than one job on the student assistant payroll however the maximum number of hours per week cannot be exceeded in combined hours for all jobs.
• Eligibility for appointment as a Student Assistant during the academic year is limited to students who are regularly enrolled students of the University at Albany at least half time (6 credits) during the semester of
employment. Graduate students enrolled in courses numbered 899 are considered full-time and are eligible regardless of the number of credits.
• Students hired as hourly Student Assistants over the summer must be enrolled within the State University of New York for summer classes, or the upcoming fall semester, as half time students. We strongly encourage you to
give priority to UAlbany students for employment opportunities, however if students are hired from other SUNY campuses you must provide proof of enrollment for them.
If you had previously utilized students in a fulltime capacity, here are some potential alternatives:
• Review whether the need for fulltime work really exists or can less hours suffice
• Hire more students at less hours/week (i.e. 2 students @ 20 hours per week)
• Depending on the type of work being performed, you may be able to hire students in a non-student title at fulltime. Note that if your funding is from an IFR, fringe charges will apply to payroll expenses in non-student titles.
If you currently have a contract or MOU that includes the provision of Student Assistants, please review the current contract or MOU to insure that you can meet the obligations contained in the contract or MOU under these new maximum hour requirements. If you cannot meet the obligations of the contract or MOU for Student Assistant work required either through the hours per week limit or the alternative solutions presented above, you will need to renegotiate the contract or MOU immediately to include these weekly hour requirements. In addition, all new contracts and MOUs must contain the new weekly hour limits for any Student Assistants included in the agreement. If you have questions about a contract or MOU, please contact Purchasing 437-4579.
