Message on behalf of Timothy Sergay, Chair, Governance Council of the University Senate
The University Faculty Bylaws, in Art. II §5.3.1, call for the Governance Council of the University Senate to prepare and distribute a preliminary slate , found at the end of this email, of candidates for the election of Senators-at-large, and to solicit additional nominations from faculty. That is the purpose of this communication. Additional nominations are indeed needed in order to populate the ballot with the requisite minimum of “two candidates for each vacancy” (Art. II §5.3.1): please consider taking steps in this connection, either running yourself or proposing to colleagues that they run and supporting such nominations with petitions.
The upcoming election is for one SUNY-wide University Faculty senator seat, two at-large University Senate senator seats, one full-time professional faculty at-large senator seat, one part-time University Senate faculty at-large senator seat, and two University Auxiliary Services (UAS) board seats.
The Faculty Bylaws stipulate that the “name of any eligible Faculty member who has been nominated by a petition of at least 25 faculty members” can be added to those names on the preliminary ballot. The final slate will be published at one week before the election, and will indicate voting deadlines.”
The deadline for submitting petitions to add a candidate is close of business on Friday, April 2, 2021. Scanned copies of signed petitions should be emailed to Senate Secretary Christian Poehlmann at cpoehlmann@albany.edu .
Nominees for open at-large and professional faculty at-large University Senate seats must be full-time members of the voting faculty. Nominees must agree to be nominated and, if elected, to serve. University Senate meetings occur monthly, normally on Wednesdays from 2:45 pm to 5:00 pm . University senators must also agree to be a member of one of the Senate’s councils or standing committees and are eligible to be nominated to stand for election as a council or committee chair. Information on Senate councils is available on the Senate web site at http://www.albany.edu/senate .
Part-time faculty may only vote for the University Senate part-time faculty at-large positions.
By no later than three weeks from today, April 9, 2021, you will receive an email to your SUNY Albany account, with a link to the ballot. Please let me know if you do not receive an email with a link to the ballot by the end of the day of April 9, 2021. Polls will be open for a period of one week: the opening and closing times will be published in the email distributing the link to the ballot.
