Dear Dr. Jarvis: Proposal Nos. 934-92 and 935-92

Iwrite in regard to Joseph C. Burke’s letters of September 25, 1992, requesting approval of curricular
and award changes for the Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) programs in Reading and in Curriculum and
Instruction offered at the State University of New York at Albany.

Jam pleased to inform you that, on the basis of our review, the requested changes have been approved
as detailed on the attached listing from the Inventory of Registered Programs. These programs are now
registered as leading to the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree.

Because the change of degree was approved on the basis of a review of the current programs, these
registration actions do not indicate retroactive approval of program changes. For graduates of the Ed.D,
program to have their degree exchanged for a Ph.D., the University’s faculty and administration would need
to examine each case individually to determine whether all the tequirements as approved for the Ph.D., such
as the nature of the dissertation and the mastery of research methods, were fulfilled. Documentation should

be retained for each case reviewed and, where an exchange of degree is approved, the original diploma should
be returned.

Thank you for keeping us informed.

Sincerely,

malh

Donald J. Nolan
