THOMSON HAS THREE GOALS IN UALBANY’S 9-7 WIN OVER NO. 19 DARTMOUTH
Troy, N.Y. — Merrick Thomson (Albany Academy) scored three goals and added two assists,
as UAlbany upended 19th-ranked Dartmouth, 9-7, in a non-league contest on Tuesday
afternoon at Rensselaer’s Harkness Field.

UAlbany (4-2) reversed a 2-1 deficit in the second quarter with four consecutive goals over
a two-minute-and-five second span. Frank Resetarits scored back-to-back 41 seconds apart
to give his team the lead. He found the net off a rebound for a 3-2 advantage after his first
shot was turned away by Big Green goalkeeper Andrew Goldstein.

Chris Martocchia converted in a man-advantage situtation with 53 seconds left before
halftime. Luke Daquino then scored from the top of the crease off Thomson’s feed 12
seconds later after Jordan Levine won the faceoff to complete the outburst.

Dartmouth (3-2) closed within one goal on two occasions in the third quarter, including 6-5
with 4:27 left in the period. Brad Heritage curled in the middle of the field and blasted a shot
from the right side off Ben Grinnell’s pass. The Great Danes then pushed out to a three-goal
lead. Thomson made a diving shot following a scramble for a loose ball in front of the cage.
Bakary Janneh connected on a drive from the right with 11:29 left in the fourth quarter.

The Big Green, who defeated No. 4 Maryland in their last outing one week ago, would

qu another run at the lead. Junior attacker Jamie Coffin, who led all scorers with five
goals, tallied his 15th of the season midway through the stanza. Ryan Danehy closed the

gap to 8-7 on an extra-man goal, a low 15-yard shot, with 1:59 to play.

The Great Danes, who knocked off their second top-20 team this season after edging

Massachusetts on March 15, decided the outcome when Thomson scored his 15th goal of the

year off Levine’s crossing pass 24 seconds later. Daquino started the play by forcing a

turnover at midfield with a stick-check.

“That's as good a win as we have had here,” UAlbany coach Scott Marr said. “This team

is starting to find its way. We didn’t start well and were not running in the first part of the

game, but we found a way to work through it. Our conference (America East) has had some

big wins this season, and we are gaining respect.”
UAlbany goalkeeper Kevin Rae made 15 saves, including eight in the final period.
Martocchia and Resetarits each finished with a pair of goals. Dartmouth’s Goldstein stopped

nine shots.

UALBANY COMPLETES SERIES SWEEP WITH 5-4 WIN OVER APPALACHIAN STATE
@bsoone. N.C. — Tony Vallone (Greenwich Central) belted a two-run homer and reliever
Shawn Ryan (Stillwater Central) earned his second save in as many days, as UAlbany
completed a series sweep with a 5-4 victory over Appalachian State on Saturday afternoon at
Red Lackey Field.

UAlbany (5-5) built a 4-1 lead in the sixth inning, when Justin Meagher started a two-out
rally with a single. Vallone, a senior center fielder, then slammed a 3-2 pitch over the left-field
fence, his ninth career home run.

Appalachian State (7-18) chipped away at the lead in the eighth, as Brad Peisel drilled a
two-run double into the left-field gap. Peisel’s tenth two-bagger of the season chased middle
reliever Alexander Beaulieu from the game after just one-third of an inning. Ryan then
worked out of the jam by forcing a ground out and striking out freshman pinch-hitter Jordan
Ivey to end the threat.

The Great Danes, who won the opening two games in this series by scores of 5-3 and 9-7,
pushed across an important insurance run in the ninth. Catcher Fred Estes doubled off the
wall, and later scored on a two-out RBI single by Rashad Barksdale, who had five hits and
scored four runs in the series.

Ryan, who faced six batters in collecting his third save this spring, gave up Kevin Butler’s
solo home run to straightaway center with one out in the ninth. But the right-hander ended
the threat when he struck out Luis Arce with a breaking ball and got Joey Robinson to fly out
to center field to end the contest.

© UAlbany’s Vallone finished 2-for-3 at the plate with a double, two runs and two RBI, while
Starting pitcher Ethan Vaiana picked up his second win by allowing three hits and recording
three strikeouts in seven innings on the mound. ASU’s Butler totaled three hits, including a
double, with a pair of RBI.

UALBANY COMES BACK IN LATE INNINGS FOR 9-7 WIN OVER APPALACHIAN STATE
Boone, N.C. — Tony Vallone (Greenwich Central) singled in the go-ahead run in the eighth
inning and reliever Shawn Ryan (Stillwater Central) recorded his second save of season, as
UAlbany held on for a 9-7 victory over Appalachian State on Friday afternoon at Red Lackey
Field. The two teams were playing the second of a three-game series.

Appalachian State (7-17) upped its lead to 6-4 in the sixth inning, as Joey Robinson
tripled and later scored on T.J. Spivey’s groundout. UAlbany (4-5) went back in front with a
three-run seventh. Derek DeGrazio’s infield single brought home the first run, before ASU
shortstop Brad Peisel’s error led to the second. The Great Danes’ Leo Corvino (Columbia)
would later deliver a sacrifice fly that gave his team a 7-6 advantage.

The Mountaineers drew even at seven apiece in their half of the seventh, when Luis Arce
drilled a RBI single to left field. UAlbany came back with a pair in the eighth to break the tie,
as Vallone lined a two-run single up the middle past a diving second baseman with two outs.

After two walks to start the eighth, Ryan, a senior closer, came on to get the Great Danes
out of a bases-loaded jam. He struck out both Jimmy Mathias and Travis Hunnicutt on pair
of 3-2 counts to end the inning. Ryan, who recorded a career-high five strikeouts in posting
his 18th career save, mowed down the side in order in the ninth.

UALBANY BASEBALL RALLIES IN NINTH INNING AT APPALACHIAN STATE, 5-3
Boone, N.C. — Steve Wyland’s run-scoring single highlighted a ninth-inning rally, as UAlbany
came from behind for a 5-3 victory over Appalachian State on Thursday afternoon at Red
Lackey Field. The two teams were playing the first of a three-game series.

UAlbany (3-5) trailed 3-2 with two outs in the ninth, but ASU infielder Joey Robinson
misplayed Tony Vallone’s (Greenwich Central) pop fly behind first base while battling the
Sunlight. The second baseman’s error allowed pinch-runner Craig Farley to come all the way
around from the first base with the tying run, as he beat the throw to the plate. Wyland
followed with a RBI single to left field that scored Vallone from second. Steve Sayre
(Columbia) completed the uprising by driving in another run on a double off the left-field wall,
his third consecutive two-bagger in the contest.

Freshman Alexander Beaulieu, who picked up his first collegiate win on the mound with

3.1 innings of effective relief, worked out of a jam in the ninth to end the game by forcing
pinch-hitter Jimmy Mathias to ground out with two runners aboard. Beaulieu, a right-hander
from Levis, Quebec, allowed one hit with three strikeouts and one walk in his fifth appearance
out of the bullpen this season.

Appalachian State (7-16) took a 1-0 lead in the fourth, when Travis Hunnicutt tripled and

= across on catcher Kevin Butler’s sacrifice fly. The Great Danes drew even in the fifth,

when Rich Northrup’s (Shenendehowa) RBI ground out scored Rashad Barksdale.

The Mountaineers, who entered the contest with a three-game winning streak, went
ahead 3-1 in the sixth, as Butler delivered a two-run single up the middle. Beaulieu came on
in that same inning in relief of starter Kyle Thomas, and with one pitch got left fielder Julian
Brown to fly out with the bases loaded. UAlbany’s Northrup singled to center field in the
seventh to slice that deficit in half.

Albany, N.Y. — University at Albany field hockey coach Phil Sykes announced that seven student-
athletes have signed national letters of intent to play for the Great Danes during the 2005 season.
“We are extremely excited about the athletes who have committed for next season,” said
Sykes, whose team finished 7-11 and one game shy of qualifying for the America East Conference

team's defensive player of the year. Rinier received a gold medal with the lacrosse team in the
Keystone State Games last summer.

Walter, a three-time Lancaster-Lebanon League all-star at midfield, helped Cedar Crest
advance to the district and state playoffs for the first time in 25 years. Walter participated in the
National Hockey Festival in 2004, playing for pool winner Team Blitz. Michele Polizois, a center
midfielder, received All-New Jersey Group 2 second-team recognition. Polizois, a team captain, was

UALBANY HOLDS OFF 9TH-RANKED MASSACHUSETTS, 10-9, AT HARKNESS FIELD

Troy, N.Y. — Senior goalkeeper Kevin Rae made a career-high 24 saves, including 11 in the third
quarter, as UAlbany held off previously unbeaten Massachusetts, 10-9, on Tuesday afternoon at
Rensselaer’s Harkness Field.

UAlbany (2-1) snapped an early 2-2 tie with three consecutive goals over the last five minutes of
the first quarter. Brendan Russell fired a shot underneath the crossbar, before Frank Resetarits
and Jordan Levine scored 14 seconds apart. Levine completed the run when he took a feed from
Merrick Thomson (Albany Academy), who forced a turnover in the defensive zone.

The Great Danes still led 6-4 in the second quarter, but Thomson found the net twice before
halftime. He finished off a fastbreak from Luke Daquino, and then rifled in a low backhanded shot
with one second left in the period for a four-goal lead at the intermission.

Massachusetts (3-1), tied for ninth in the latest USILA national rankings and No. 10 in the Inside
Lacrosse Poll, chipped away at the lead in the third stanza. Jeff Zywicki tallied his second goal of
the day on a play that originated off a failed clear. Leading-scorer Sean Morris, who had four goals
and two assists, then sliced the deficit to 8-6 with a man-advantage. The Minutemen, who ripped off
22 of their 51 shots in the quarter, could have done even more damage if not for Rae’s stellar
performance.

In the fourth period, Daquino, who scored three times and added two assists, twice gave UAlbany

e. three-goal margin. He hit the right corner in transition for a 10-7 lead with 2:31 remaining after a
UMass attacker was stripped of the ball in the offensive half of the field.

The Minutemen, who have made NCAA appearances in two of the last three seasons, would
score twice in the final minutes. Brian Jacovina netted an unassisted goal, before setting up Morris
on an inside curl with 54 seconds left. After UAlbany’s Lee Busino (Niskayuna) took possession of
the final faceoff, the visitors never got off another shot attempt.

“That was quite a turnaround from the other day,” said UAlbany coach Scott Marr, whose team
suffered an 18-9 setback at Delaware last Saturday. “Our mind set was not right, and we had to do
some soul searching. Kevin (Rae) is capable of that type of performance, and his teammates just fed
off of his play.”

Thomson, a sophomore attacker, totaled two goals and two assists, while Resetarits scored twice
for the Great Danes, who defeated a national top-10 team for the first time in the program’s history.
Goalkeeper Bill Schell made eight saves in the UMass cage.

“Our defense stayed tight, and we concentrated on playing off the ball and staying on their
hands,” commented Rae, whose previous career-best was 20 saves against Quinnipiac as a
freshman. “This could be a crossroads win for our season. We were much more focused and played
with emotion.”

NEW HAMPSHIRE STOPS UALBANY, 68-48, IN AMERICA EAST QUARTERFINALS
West Hartford, Conn. — Danielle Clark scored 17 points and Kate Dillon added a career-high
14 to lead New Hampshire to a 68-48 victory over UAlbany in the quarterfinal round of the
America East Conference Tournament on Thursday evening at the University of Hartford’s
Chase Arena at Reich Family Pavilion.

New Hampshire (15-13) advances to face Hartford, the No. 2 seed, in Friday’s second
semifinal. Boston University, who knocked off the tournament's top seed and conference
regular-season champion Maine, 63-51, earlier in the day, and Vermont are paired in the
other semifinal.

UAlbany (14-14) went ahead 19-17 when Jen Schumacher buried a three-point field goal.
The contest featured seven lead changes and two ties over the opening 13 minutes. But the
Wildcats tallied 20 of the game’s next 24 points to take control.

Clark, a 6-foot sophomore, ignited the run with six straight points. She gave her team the
lead for good with a steal and layup and followed by scoring in the middle of UAlbany’s zone
defense. Kelley Haines canned a three-pointer from the right wing for a 26-19 advantage.

New Hampshire, the tournament's third seed, held the Great Danes without a field goal for
the rest of the period en route to a 37-23 halftime advantage. Sophomore guard Whitney

@_dwards had seven of her 14 points in the final four minutes of the stanza. Edwards made
one of her six steals and hit a layup that pushed the lead to double figures.

In the second half, the Great Danes trimmed the deficit to 44-36 with 11:43 remaining,
when Danielle Hutcheson followed Alicia Learn’s missed jumper in the lane. But UNH pulled
away with a 10-2 spurt. Dillon, who had eight markers in that outburst, led off the run with a
baseline jumper and basket in the lane.

“We had too many turnovers, especially in the first half,” said UAlbany coach Trina
Patterson, whose team committed 24 miscues handling the ball and shot 39.1 percent from
the field. “Their pressure hurt us. They smothered (Danielle) Hutcheson in the paint, and
answered our runs with big shots. As a team, we did not play like it was our last game.”

Lindsay Adams, a third-team all-conference forward, was the fourth UNH player in double
digits with 11 points, as the Wildcats moved on to the semifinal round for the first time in two
years. Schumacher led the Great Danes with 15 points, while Learn scored 11. Schumacher
made three 3-pointers to set the America East single-season record with 80.

“| didn't perform the way | wanted,” commented Hutcheson, a 6-foot-4 senior who was held
well below her season average with five points and 10 rebounds. “I didn’t get the ball where |
wanted it. | don’t care if | score, but | Know it’s my job. Tonight that was taken away from me.”

BINGHAMTON UPENDS UALBANY IN AMERICA EAST QUARTERFINAL ROUND

Vestal, N.Y. — Troy Hailey scored 19 points and Andre Heard added 18 in leading
Binghamton to a 76-70 victory over UAlbany in the quarterfinal round of the America East
Conference Tournament on Saturday, March 5 before 5,222 fans at Binghamton’s Events
Center.

Binghamton (12-16) built a 46-31 lead with 14:09 remaining, when Heard canned a three-
point field goal from the left corner. The Bearcats, who won their fifth straight on home
hardwood, made 10-of-26 from three-point range.

UAlbany (13-15) would still trail by as much as 12 points with less than four minutes
remaining, before staging a late rally. Lucious Jordan, who had 11 of his 13 points in the
second half, buried a 3-point to slice the deficit to 67-60. The Great Danes got even closer
when Aquawasi St. Hillaire sank a pair of foul shots to make it a 73-70 contest with eight
seconds left.

However, Binghamton stayed ahead, as Heard split a pair of free throws and UAlbany
turned the ball over on its next possession. The Bearcats, who converted 26-of-40 from the
line, moved on to meet top seed Vermont, a 76-61 winner over UMBC, in the semifinal round.

In the first half, Binghamton led 24-22, before reeling off eight straight points to take

@commana. Alex Adediran, a 6-foot-8 senior who had nine points and seven rebounds, hit a
layup to start the run. Hailey, who tallied 11 of his scoring total in the opening period,
completed the spurt by drilling a 3-pointer from the left wing. The Bearcats led 34-26 at the
intermission.

“It's always been a tough match-up for us,” said UAlbany coach Will Brown, whose team is
winless in four trips to the America East postseason tournament. “We’re a skilled, finesse
team, and they’re a grind-it-out, beat-you-up team. They really shot the ball well, especially in
the first half. They made three-pointers that were open, contested and just beat the shot
clock.”

Sebastian Hermenier was the third Binghamton player in double figures with 13 points and
seven rebounds. Brent Wilson, a 6-foot-8 freshman, had a career-high 18 points and added
eight rebounds for UAlbany off the bench. Jamar Wilson added 13 points and four assists.

“lll be honest | had a lot of trouble finding the openings,” said Wilson, a sophomore guard
who was just 4-of-12 from the floor. “Their team is very aggressive on defense. They just did
what they needed to do to win the game. They made shots, and that’s what it is all about at
this level.”
