Capital District Women's Basketball Tournament
Championship, Albany 67, Skidmore 47
Consolation, Rensselaer 73, Union 60

ALBANY, N.Y. -- Sophomore guard Samantha Ginsberg scored 11 of her 13
points in the first half, as Albany defeated Skidmore, 67-47, in the championship
game of the 16th annual Capital District Basketball Tournament on Sunday
afternoon at the Recreation & Convocation Center (RACC).

Albany, which won its first Capital District title since 1991 and tenth
overall, broke an early 10-10 tie with five straight points, and never looked back.
Ginsberg, the tournament's MVP, nailed an 18-foot jumper to break the early
deadlock.

Still leading 24-14 later in the period, the Great Danes reeled off 16 of the
game's next 19 points. Ginsberg scored seven points in that stretch, and buried
a three-pointer from the right corner to give her club a 40-17 halftime cushion.

In the last three minutes of the half, we saw it was still close," said
Ginsberg, who canned 6-of-12 field goals and added six assists. "We are a fast
team, and used the uptempo style to break it open."

Albany, which shot 52 percent from the floot in the opening half, got 12
points from freshman Sheila McCaughin (Bethlehem H.S.) while center Erica
Witham (Guilderland H.S.) had 10 points and seven rebounds in a balanced
effort.

Skidmore, the Capital District champion in 1992 and 1993, was led by
Tina Allen, who had 12 points and a game-high 13 rebounds.

In the consolation, Rensselaer upended Union, 73-60, as Nancy Kelly
scored 16 points, and Sandy Hayn grabbed 15 rebounds. Andrea Pagnozzi
totaled 17 points and 17 rebounds for Union, which was held to 29 percent
shooting.

men's and women's swimming, men's tennis) on August 25.

As provided by the State University of New York and the National Collegiate Athletics Association
(NCAA), the IAB is the official campus intercollegiate athletic advisory body to the President, and acts
under the Policies of the Board of Trustees while reporting to the President.

The University's Intercollegiate Athletics Board consists of eleven voting members, six of whom are
full-time faculty or administrative staff, and five of whom are full-time Albany students.

NOTE TO MEDIA: Dr. Richard Hall, Chair of the Intercollegiate Athletics Board, and a Distinguished
Service Professor in sociology, will be available to answer your questions following Thursday's IAB

NCAA Division Ill Men's Soccer Championships
First Round
PLATTSBURGH 2, ALBANY 0

ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Senior Andrew Gatherer scored on a direct kick late in the second half,
to lead Plattsburgh past Albany, 2-0, in a Northeast Region first round game of the NCAA Division III
Men's Soccer Tournament on Saturday morning at R.I.T. Field.

Gatherer lofted his direct kick over a player-wall, and past diving Albany goalkeeper Jon Jacobs
to put Plattsburgh ahead, 1-0, at 81 minutes, 14 seconds . Bryan Johnson scored the Cardinals'

second goal when he out-ran the Albany defense and fired home Matt Rose's lead pass with two
minutes, and 10 seconds left in the game.

Plattsburgh, which out-shot Albany 20-5, avenged a 2-1 loss to the Great Danes earlier this
season at Varsity Field.

"Plattsburgh was the better team today," Albany head coach Roy Pfeil said. "They were
focused on making up for the blemish we put on their record."

Cardinal goalkeeper Eric Rienecker registered his twelfth shutout of the season, by stopping
two shots. Jacobs made 12 saves for Albany, which finishes its season at 10-5-2. Saturday's loss
marked the last Division Ill game for the Great Danes, who will play in Division II beginning in 1995-96.
Albany was ranked 22nd in the nation in the ISAA's final poll.

In the region's other game, George Barakas scored the game-winner late in the second half, to
lead top-seeded R.1.T. past Binghamton, 3-2, on Saturday afternoon at R.I.T. Field.

The second-seeded Cardinals (16-3) will face R.I.T. (12-1-2) in the second round on Sunday at

1:00.
