(Men's Soccer)

Albany, N.Y. -- Pedro Fragoso scored the game-winner with four minutes and 34
minutes seconds left in the second overtime to lift C.W. Post to a 3-2 victory over
Albany in the championship of the inaugural Albany Soccer Classic at Varsity
Field.

Fragoso drilled a 12-yard shot inside the far post on a crossing from
midfielder Joe Flick in the sudden-death extra period. C.W. Post (2-0) trailed 2-1
in regulation, but Hector Orantes tied the match on a rebound shot with 55
seconds remaining.

Albany (1-1) trailed 1-0 at halftime, before midfielder Charlie Justino's blast
drew the Great Danes even. Freshman Bryan Grabon put his club ahead at 64:22
off a throw-in by defender Brad Greenwood.

Ebou Njie had five saves for the Pioneers, while UA's Mike Cooper stopped
two shots including a penalty kick with 6:11 left in regulation.

Wayne Campbell scored two goals and Tim Cummins had one goal and
one assist to lead Mercy to a 3-2 decision over Massachusetts-Lowell in the third-
place match.

(Men's Soccer)

Albany, N.Y. -- Senior forward Kevin Koscielniak (Saratoga Springs H.S.) had two
goals and two assists to power Albany past Mercy, 5-1, in the opening round of
the inaugural Albany Soccer Classic at Varsity Field. C.W. Post was a 3-1 winner
over Massachusetts-Lowell in the other first-round match.

The Great Danes meet C.W. Post in Sunday's championship at 2:00 p.m.,
while Massachusetts-Lowell and Mercy battle at 12 noon.

Russell Di Benedetto, a junior sweeper back, scored his first goal as a
collegian with seven minutes and 48 seconds gone in the contest to ignite a four-
goal opening period. Koscielniak tallied twice on consecutive headers off long
crosses from freshman Kirt MacNeill within a five-minute span late in the half.
The 6-foot-3 striker upped his career totals to 14 goals and nine assists.

In Saturday's first match, C.W. Post's Nick Fitzpatrick and Joe Flick each
scored within a 28-second stretch of the first half. Goalkeeper Ebou Njie made
six saves for the Pioneers.

Albany, N.Y. -- Nancy Nicsevic (Columbia H.S.) had two goals and one assist to
lead Albany to a convincing 6-1 victory over C.W. Post in the season opener for
both teams at Albany Field.

Nicsevic, a junior forward from Troy, N.Y., scored the game's opening goal
with 20:48 remaining in the first half. Jen Cordes redirected Nicsevic's drive from
in front for a 3-0 lead eight minutes later.

Tovah Atwell and Katie Cunningham each added one goals and two assists
for the Great Danes, who are coming off a school-record 14-3 campaign in 1996.

Sophomore goalkeeper Keli Roberts had 22 saves for C.W. Post, which
was dominated in the shot statistics by a 32-3 margin.

Elmira, N.Y. -- Kristin and Suzanne Weller, sisters from Cazenova, N.Y., were
among five different goal scorers in leading Elmira to a 5-2 non-conference
victory over visiting Albany in the season lid-lifter for both squads.

Freshman Emily Trievel had one goal and one assist for the Great Danes in
George Vizvary's head coaching debut. Goalkeeper Tara Ford, a converted field
player, made 15 saves.

UNIVERSITY AT ALBANY NAMES BILL GEITNER AND BYRON THORNE
ASSISTANT MEN'S BASKETBALL COACHES

ALBANY, N.Y. -- Bill Geitner and Byron Thorne have been selected as assistant men's basketball
coaches at the University at Albany as head coach Scott Hicks announced today. Geitner has been
an assistant coach at the University of Rochester since 1991, while Thorne coached the last two
years at Elmira College.

Geitner, 32, spent six years as an assistant coach on Mike Neer's staff at Rochester, where
he coordinated recruiting and scouting and had responsibilities with academic advising and weight
training. During his tenure, the Yellowjackets played for the NCAA Division III national title in 1992.
He was also an assistant and head junior varsity coach for two years at Hamilton College, and at
Hobart College during the 1988-89 season.

Geitner, who graduated from Hamilton with a B.A. in government in 1987, was a four-year
starter for the Continentals, and set school records for career and single-season assists. He served
as co-captain in leading Hamilton to a 23-4 record as a senior. He recently earned his master's
degree in administration from Rochester. A native of Fulton, N.Y., Geitner attended G. Ray Bodley
High School, where he was a guard in basketball and a pitcher in baseball for the Class A Section III
athletic program. He has also coached the Central Open team at the Empire State Games on two
occasions.

Thorne, 25, handled recruiting, scouting and the conditioning program at Elmira the last two
years. The Soaring Eagles reached the ECAC Division II] Upstate New York tournament's
championship in 1997, and the ECAC quarter-final round the previous season. In addition, he
worked as an administrative assistant in athletics, and was responsible for academic progress and
Booster Club management. In 1996, he served as co-head coach for the Central Open Region team
at the Empire State Games.

Thorne, a native of Pittsburgh, was a 1994 honorable mention All-America guard at Penn
State-Behrend College in Erie, Pennsylvania. He was chosen as an ECAC Division III all-star and
was a two-time ECAC player of the week. Thorne received his undergraduate degree in
management information systems, and earned a M.S. in education from Elmira last spring. A
Vincentian High School graduate, he was voted to the Pittsburgh Fabulous Five all-star basketball

eo" and was a center fielder in baseball.

Albany appointed Scott Hicks as head basketball coach last May 15. The Great Danes will
continue to compete at the NCAA Division II level for the next two seasons, before upgrading to
Division | in 1999-2000.

Men's Basketball Assistants Release

(Men's Soccer)

Albany, N.Y. -- University at Albany opens its 1997 men's soccer season by
hosting the inaugural Albany Soccer Classic this weekend (August 30-31) at
Varsity Field.

The Great Danes, who finished 9-8-2 last season, are led by senior Kevin
Koscielniak (Saratoga Springs H.S.) and junior Tom Mason. Koscielniak had
eight goals and four assists last fall, while Mason chipped in with eight goals and
three assists. Russell Di Benedetto, a 19-game starter at sweeper back, and
junior goalkeeper Mike Cooper lead the UA defense. Head coach Roy Pfeil, the
former boys' coach at Shenendehowa and Linton/Mt. Pleasant high schools,
begins his seventh season, and had a 56-36-13 career record.

Albany faces Mercy College in the opening round on Saturday at 2:00 p.m.,
while Massachusetts-Lowell faces C.W. Post at 12 noon.

UNIVERSITY AT ALBANY ANNOUNCES 1997 FOOTBALL CAPTAINS
Great Danes Prepare for Season Opener on September 6

ALBANY, N.Y. -- Loren Baker, Luke Byrnes, Peter London, Joe Savino, and Seth Thomas have been
selected as the University at Albany's football captains for the 1997 season as head coach Bob Ford
announced today.

Baker, a senior from Gloversville, N.Y. (Gloversville H.S.), was selected Footbal! Gazette first-team All-
America and All-ECAC Intercollegiate Football Conference as an offensive tackle last season. A 10-game
starter, he allowed no sacks while blocking for a unit which averaged nearly 330 yards per game.

Savino, a senior quarterback, and Thomas, a senior tight end, were also named to the 1996 ECAC-
IFC All-Star team. A native of Norwood, N.J., Savino holds or shares 14 school records, and is Albany's all-
time leader in passing yards (4,638), touchdown passes (34), completions (343) and attempts (690). He
needs 490 yards to move to the top spot in career total offense. Thomas, a 6-foot-4, 260-pound athlete from
@ <anandaigua, N.Y., caught 19 passes for 216 yards and six touchdowns as a junior. He ranks eighth in
career receptions with 55, and tied a school record with three TD receptions in last year's season finale.

London, a senior from Brooklyn, N.Y., will start for the second consecutive year at defensive tackle.
He had 67 tackles and three sacks, and led the Great Danes with four fumble recoveries, including one for a
touchdown. Byrnes, a native of Huntington, N.Y., moves to outside linebacker after playing quarterback the
last three seasons. He appeared in eight games as a junior, and earned his first letter as a member of the
punt cover and punt return units.
