WOMEN - Vermont 77, Albany 55
Burlington, Vt. —- Sophomore forward Aaron Yantzi led all scorers with 19 and Libby
Smith added 16 points and 12 rebounds, as Vermont cruised to a 77-55 America East
Conference victory over Albany on Thursday evening at Patrick Gymnasium.
Vermont (19-7, AE 13-2) capitalized on a 28-9 run midway through the first half en
route to its 11th consecutive win. Katie McNamara, a 6-foot-1 freshman who came off
the bench, totaled 11 of her 13 points before the break. She gave her squad a 35-13
lead by converting a driving layup with 6:23 remaining.
Albany (4-22, AE 0-15) managed just two field goals over the opening 15 minutes.
Meanwhile, the Catamounts shot 55.6 percent, on 20-of-36 shooting, in building a 49-25
halftime advantage. Smith, who had 12 points and eight rebounds in the first half, was
one of three Vermont players in double figures by the intermission.
In the final stanza, Vermont increased its lead to 59-30 on a pair of free throws by
Yantzi with 14:41 to play. The Catamounts have already clinched the America East's
regular-season title and will be the No. 1 seed for next week’s postseason tournament.
“Libby Smith is one great player,’ said Albany coach Mari Warner, whose team
nearly pulled off an upset in the first meeting before losing 69-65 on Feb. 9. “She leads
this team emotionally, and she can score in multiple ways. We gave up too many points
in transition in the first half. They do a good job of finding the mismatches and open
shooters.”

BASEBALL
Winston-Salem, N.C. — Third baseman Jamie D’Antona singled, doubled and drove in
four runs to lead 11th-ranked Wake Forest to a 9-1 victory over Albany on Thursday
fternoon at Hooks Stadium.
D'Antona, last year’s national freshman of the year, gave Wake Forest (9-1) a 4-
O lead in the fourth inning, when he cleared the bases with a double into the left-field
gap. Stephen Ghutzman had put his team on top in the first with a run-scoring single
through the left side.
Starting pitcher Tim Morley, who was drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates last
summer, blanked Albany (1-4) through six innings to improve his record to 2-0. The
freshman left-hander allowed four hits and struck out six. The Great Danes broke
through in the eighth, when Mike Grasso (Bishop Maginn) singled up the middle to
score Eddie Scott.
The Demon Deacons, the defending Atlantic Coast Conference champions, put
the game away with five runs in the bottom of the inning. Second baseman Nick Blue,
who scored three times, keyed the uprising with a two-run single.
Shortstop Joe Lamb and Scott each singled twice for the Great Danes, who play
at James Madison on Friday at 2:30 p.m.

KARIM OUATTARA WILL NOT PLAY IN AMERICA EAST TOURNAMENT
Albany, N.Y. — University at Albany men’s basketball player Karim Ouattara will miss
the America East Conference Tournament, as announced today by Director of Athletics
Lee McElroy. Ouattara will be withheld from post-season competition due to the pending
NCAA inquiry concerning his amateur status.
Ouattara, a senior from Paris, France, did not play in UAlbany’s final three games
of the season against Boston University, Hartford and Stony Brook. The NCAA
forwarded a ruling on his status on Friday, Feb. 22 with regard to competition. The
decision stated that Ouattara violated amateurism legislation when, as a member of a
French club team in the late 1990s, he played in a league that promotes itself as a
professional league.
“The NCAA inquiry is still pending, so we are taking the action of holding him from
competition until there is a conclusion,” McElroy said. “We will continue to work with the
NCAA to study the situation.”
Ouattara, a 6-foot-7, 224-pound center/forward, averaged 3.1 points and 4.0
rebounds in 24 appearances this season.
MEN’S LACROSSE PICKED FIFTH IN AMERICA EAST CONFERENCE POLL
Boston, Mass. — The America East Conference announced its preseason men’s lacrosse
poll, and the University at Albany has been chosen to finish fifth in the six-team
conference. Stony Brook, who captured five first-place votes, was voted by the coaches
to win the title.
The Great Danes open their 14-game schedule against Butler on Friday, March 1
in Springfield, Ohio. National powers Johns Hopkins (No. 3) and Massachusetts (No.
12) are among this year’s opponents.

Head coach Scott Marr, a former Maryland assistant, is in his second year. The
team’s top-five scorers return, including senior attackman Jim Lindsay, who averaged
4.63 points and 2.88 assists per game. Lindsay has 30 goals and 48 assists in two
seasons with the program. Sophomore Michael Solazzo (16 goals, 7 assists) and
senior midfielder Sal Massa (13 goals, 10 assists) each contributed 23 points apiece.
Alan Beach, a junior who shared 2001 team MVP honors with Lindsay, made 11
starts in UAlbany midfield last year, and led the team with 34 ground balls. He added
three goals and one assist. Luke Smith, Chris Zaffiro and Emil Bove are all proven
defenseman. Smith, a 6-foot-3, 215-pound junior, led that group with 24 ground balls.
Albany's freshman class is impressive. Attackman Luke Daquino, a high school
All-America selection, totaled 61 goals and 54 assists last spring. Kevin Rae, an All-
Section | performer, will battle for the starting goalkeeper position. Lee Busino, a 6-foot-
2, 210-pound defensive midfielder, will likely be the primary face-off man.

Wednesday, Feb. 27 at 4:00 p.m., was cancelled due to the weather. No make-up date
is planned. Temperatures hovered in the low 30's with winds gusting at 25 to 35 miles
per hour. In the first game of the series on Tuesday evening, the Spartans posted a 10-
9 victory in 10 innings. Albany meets 16th-ranked Wake Forest, in Winston-Salem, N.C..,

BASEBALL
Greensboro, N.C. — Junior second baseman Jason Sarvis hit a walk-off home run
in the 10th inning lifting UNC-Greensboro to a 10-9 non-conference victory over
Albany on Tuesday afternoon at UNCG Stadium.
Sarvis led off the bottom half of the extra-inning frame with a blast over the
right-field fence off a one-two pitch by Albany reliever Nick Borgia. Greensboro
right-hander Scooter Michael earned the victory after blanking the Great Danes
on two hits over 3 2/3 innings. He totaled seven strikeouts during that span.
After trailing 4-0 in the first inning, Albany (1-3) recaptured a 5-4 lead in the
second. Matt Crudo (LaSalle Institute) belted a two-run home run to left center
field. Eddie Scott followed Crudo with a solo blast to left.
UNC-Greensboro (6-2) added another four-run frame in the fifth. Kirk
Strebin’s homer ensued after a Nick Lockhart pinch-hit, two-run single that gave
the Spartans a 9-7 advantage. The Great Danes tied the score at 9 apiece two
innings later as Mike Grasso (Bishop Maginn) and Joe Lamb tallied run-scoring
singles. Albany plays at UNC-Greensboro again on Wednesday at 4:00 p.m.

UALBANY WOMEN’S LACROSSE PICKED FOURTH IN CONFERENCE POLL
Boston, Mass. — The America East Conference announced its preseason women’s
lacrosse poll on Tuesday, and Boston University has been chosen to win the conference
title. The coaches picked the University at Albany to finish fourth. The Great Danes
open their schedule this Saturday against non-league opponent Drexel on the road.
First-year head coach Dennis Short comes to UAlbany following six years as an
Ohio State assistant. The Buckeyes posted a combined 43-41 record during his tenure.
Albany returns four of its top six scorers from last season. Junior midfielder Maria
Ferrucci was the team’s top scorer with 45 points (42 goals, 3 assists). She ranked
19th nationally among the Division | leaders at 2.80 goals per game, and has recorded
two of the school’s top-five single-season goals scored marks in her first two seasons.
Ferrucci is fourth all-time in goals (89) and ranks fifth in total points (97).
Junior attack Andrea Esposito (Saratoga Springs H.S.) was second on the team
in scoring with 44 points, including 21 goals and a team-high 23 assists. She finished
tenth nationally in assists with a 1.53 average. Esposito stands second on the school’s
career charts in that category with 42. Alexis DiDomenico, a sophomore attack, was
third on the team with 23 goals.
Albany is captained by Liz Adamo, one of three senior defenders on the squad
who have combined for 75 starts during their three-year tenure with the program.
Seniors Erin Finnigan and Allison Beagle (Saratoga Springs) join her in the backfield.
Several newcomers are expected to contribute immediately, including freshman
goalkeeper Francine Beltempo. A Section | all-star, Beltempo led Suffern High School
to a Class A sectional championship and a spot in the state title game in 2000. First-
year attack Jenn Rajezak (Scotia-Glenville H.S.) tallied more than 85 points to earn high
school All-America honors. She led the Tartans to the 2000 Section II, Class B
championship.

UALBANY WILL PLAY FOURTEEN BASEBALL GAMES AT HERITAGE PARK
Albany, N.Y. — University at Albany Director of Athletics Lee McElroy announced today
that the baseball program will play 14 home games at Heritage Park during the 2002
season.
The Great Danes, who are competing in the America East Conference for the first
time, have scheduled conference doubleheaders at Heritage Park with Hartford (April
13-14), Stony Brook (April 20-21) and Vermont (May 4-5). The Great Danes will also
face non-league opponents Boston College (April 9) and Manhattan (May 7).
“Heritage Park is one of the premier ballparks in the Northeast,” said Jon Mueller,
who begins his third season as Albany's head coach. “The playing field, seating
capacity and surrounding elements will benefit the athletes and spectators. This
arrangement also provides our school with the ability to host the conference tournament
in the future.”
Heritage Park, the home facility for the Albany-Colonie Diamond Dogs, an
Independent Northern League minor league baseball team, is located in Colonie, New
York. The 5,000-seat stadium, with dimensions of 410 feet to center field, 325 feet on
the left-field line, and 335 feet on the right-field line, opened in 1983.

High Point, N.C. - Sophomore right-hander Adam Kroft (Shenendehowa) tossed a one-
hitter over five innings in lifting Albany to a 10-4 victory over High Point on Monday at
Alumni Field.
Albany (1-2) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second, when Tony Vallone
(Greenwich Central) earned a bases-loaded walk after Jake Toms singled and Dan
Schoonmaker belted a double that reached the right-field fence. Matt Crudo (LaSalle
Institute) followed with a run-scoring groundout to shortstop.

The Great Danes added a run in the fourth as Mike Grasso (Bishop Maginn)
grounded to second base in scoring Vallone. Grasso, who went 2-for-5 at the plate, also
added two stolen bases and three RBI. Albany pounded out 11 hits and chased Panther
starter David White out of the game after 3 2/3 innings. Vallone, who totaled three runs,
is hitting .778 after three contests.
High Point (7-5), a member of the Big South Conference who saw its two-game
winning streak snapped, plated two runs in the fourth frame on an fielding error by third
baseman Pat Delaney. Albany would score seven times over the last four innings.
Grasso and Joe Lamb, who had three RBI, each had two-run singles in the sixth and
eighth, respectively. Eddie Scott added a two-run triple for the Great Danes, who play at
UNC-Greensboro on Tuesday at 4:00 p.m.

UALBANY SEEDED SIXTH FOR AMERICA EAST BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT
Boston, Mass. — The America East Conference announced on Sunday the men’s
basketball postseason tournament bracket. The quarterfinal and semifinal rounds will be
played at Northeastern University’s Matthews Arena in Boston on March 2 and 3.
UAlbany earned the No. 6 seed for next weekend’s tournament, and will face
Hartford, the third seed, on Saturday at 2:15 p.m. Albany (8-19, 5-11) and Hartford (13-
17, 10-6) split their two-game set during the regular season. The Hawks posted a 62-51
victory on Feb. 8 at Chase Family Arena. The Great Danes won on their home floor, 51-
48, last Friday.
The winner of the Albany-Hartford contest meets the Boston University-
Northeastern winner in the first semifinal on Sunday at 12 noon. Boston U. and Vermont
shared the conference's regular-season title. The Catamounts earned the No. 1 seed by
sweeping the season series between the teams.

Davidson, N.C. — Left fielder Tim Frend belted a two-run triple in the eighth inning, as
Davidson rallied for an 8-5 non-conference victory over Albany on Sunday afternoon at
Wildcat Park.
Albany (0-2) carried a 5-2 lead into the late innings. Second baseman Mike
Grasso (Bishop Maginn) gave his team a three-run lead by plating two runners with a
single up the middle in the fourth. Dan Schoonmaker snapped a 2-2 deadlock in the
third with a RBI single.
Davidson (5-5) closed within 5-4 in the seventh on a pair of run-scoring doubles
by James Marino and Billy Ryan. The Wildcats, who have won four of their last five
starts, scored four times in the eighth. Frend tripled to right center to give his club the
lead. Third baseman Michael Muniz added a two-run double in the same frame.
Albany's Tony Vallone (Greenwich Central) went 4-for-4 at the plate with two
doubles and two runs scored. Grasso finished with two singles and two stolen bases.

MEN — Stony Brook 48, Albany 47
Albany, N.Y. — Mike Konopka made two free throws with no time remaining to lift Stony
Brook to a 48-47 America East Conference victory over Albany on Sunday afternoon in
the regular-season finale for both teams at the Recreation and Convocation Center.
Albany's Will Brand bumped Konopka after he pumped fake a shot 30 feet from
the basket following an in-bounds play. He made both attempts to complete a string of
seven straight points that reversed a 47-41 deficit with 1:33 remaining.
D.J. Munir, who scored 19 points, sliced the gap to 47-46 with 45.4 seconds
remaining as he buried one of his four 3-point field goals. After Albany’s Earv Opong
missed two free throws, Stony Brook (6-21, AE 5-11) set up for the last shot. Konopka
misfired on a bank shot from right of the lane, and the Great Danes’ Joe Vukovic
grabbed the rebound. However, Vukovic tossed the ball up the floor into the hands of
Munir, who called timeout with less than one second to play.
Albany (8-19, AE 5-11) trailed by as much as 10 points in the opening period, but
closed within 28-25 at halftime. The Great Danes went ahead 34-30 with 15:39
remaining on back-to-back fastbreak layups by junior guard Antione Johnson, who led
all scorers with 20 points.
Munir, a 6-foot-3 sophomore who had three assists and three steals, hit a driving
layup to get the Seawolves within 42-41 with 5:03 left. But Brand converted a pair of
free throws and Johnson canned a three-pointer from the top of the arc to build Albany’s
lead to six points.
Stony Brook’s Jairus McCollum had 11 points and nine rebounds off the bench.
Zone defenses by both teams forced each squad to struggle from the perimeter. The
Seawolves made 35.7 percent from the field, while Albany was limited to 34.1-percent
shooting.

Richmond, Va. — Sophomore right-hander Tim Stauffer (Saratoga Springs H.S.)
scattered six hits in posting his second victory of the season, as unbeaten Richmond
upended Albany, 5-1, in the Great Danes’ season opener on Saturday afternoon at Pitt
Field.
Albany took a 1-0 lead in the third, when Tony Vallone (Greenwich Central)
scored on a throwing error following Eddie Scott’s double into the left-field gap.
Richmond, off to its best start since 1995 with a 5-0 record, tied the contest in the bottom
of the frame on Vito Chiaravalloti’s RBI single.
The Spiders, who play in the Atlantic-10 Conference, went ahead in the sixth when
Bryan Pritz doubled home Adam Tidball. Richmond scored three times in the eighth to
take control. Tidball, a sophomore catcher, had a RBI double, while third baseman
David Reaver, who went 3-for-4 at the plate, scored another run with an infield single.
Stauffer, a 6-foot-2, 200-pound pitcher, went all nine innings on the mound, and
allowed one unearned run with four strikeouts and no walks. Will Haskell (Saratoga
Springs) made his start for the Great Danes after transferring from Massachusetts. The
6-foot-5S left-hander gave up four hits and struck out four in 5.2 innings.

Jersey City, N.J.—UAlbany junior Violeta Petijevic posted wins at first singles and
doubles as the Great Danes dropped a 5-2 decision to St. Peter’s on Saturday afternoon
in the second round of the St. Peter’s Invitational.

2-0 in both singles and doubles play this spring.
On Friday night, juniors Rachel Berenbaum and Leslie Harvey each won in
singles and teamed for a doubles victory to lead Long Island to an abbreviated 5-0 win
over Albany.
Berenbaum defeated UAlbany freshman Marisa Berley in Flight II singles, 6-0
and 6-1. Harvey won at third singles, taking a 6-0, 6-1 decision over Krista Babiarz.

Petijevic led her first singles match against Anixa Almeyda, 6-1, and Alex

Albany, N.Y. — Antione Johnson scored 14 points and made a three-point field goal with one
second remaining, as Albany rallied for a 51-48 America East Conference victory over Hartford
on Friday evening at the Recreation and Convocation Center.
Johnson, who did all of his scoring in the second half, buried a 22-foot, game-winning
jumper over the out-stretched hand of guard Ryan Stys from the top of the arc. Hartford (13-16,
AE 10-5) was unable to get a shot off at the end.
Albany (8-18, AE 5-10) tied the contest at 48 apiece, when Johnson canned a pair of free
throws. Hartford's Pierre Johnson, who had eight points and seven rebounds, missed in the
lane with 11 seconds remaining. Joe Vukovic, who had four points and 11 rebounds off the
bench, grabbed the errant shot to set up the game-winning possession.
The Hawks, who had won four of their last five starts, built a 40-31 lead midway through
the second half on a three-pointer by Mantas Storpirstis, who led his team with 12 points.
Albany then tallied 12 of the game’s next 16 points to get back into the contest. Rhasheed
Peterson hit a long-range jumper during that run, before Johnson made both ends of a one-
and-one opportunity to close the gap to 44-43 with 4:06 remaining.
Stys, a sophomore guard, made just one of three free throws after being fouled on a
three-point attempt for a 48-46 lead three minutes later. Johnson drew his team even when he
was hit from behind in the backcourt by Junior Amous.
‘We wanted to run a high screen for Earv (Opong) or Rhasheed (Peterson),” said Albany
coach Will Brown, whose team has won four straight at home. “When they came out in a 1-3-1
zone instead of man, it was up to Antione to handle the ball and possibly get into one of the
gaps. This gives us a lot of confidence heading into the conference touranament.”
In the first half, the game went back and forth with seven lead changes and four ties.
Earv Opong had 14 of his 16 points in the period, and the Great Danes took a narrow 23-22
lead to the locker room.
Deon Saunders and Amous each had nine points for the Hawks, who posted a 62-
o1victory over Albany in the first meeting two weeks ago. The two teams will likely be paired
again when the America East Tournament begins on March 2 in Boston.

WOMEN - Hartford 71, Albany 36
West Hartford, Conn.—Senior forward Janika Lopp scored 17 points as Hartford posted
a 71-36 America East Conference victory over Albany on Friday evening at the Chase
Family Arena.
© Albany (4-20, AE 0-13) held an early 6-3 lead after Kathryn Hemlock hit a foul
line jumper. Hartford (12-13, AE 8-6), winners in five of its last six games, would explode
for a 41-8 run over the final 17 minutes of the half. The Hawks had 10 different players
reach the scoring column in the outburst.
Lopp, a preseason all-conference selection, tallied 11 first-half points as
Hartford held a commanding 44-14 advantage at halftime. The Great Danes, who
managed just 5-of-25 shooting in the period, totaled two field goals over a ten-minute
stretch.
After trailing at the intermission, Albany could only close within 46-24 at the
17:42 mark. Hartford, who moved into a fourth-place tie with Maine in the conference
standings, shot 46 percent and out-rebounded Albany, 49-31. The Great Danes tallied
their lowest-scoring output of the season in losing their 13th consecutive game.
“Our team came out rattled in the first half,” said Albany coach Mari Warner,
whose team shot a season-low 20 percent from the field. “I thought we played them
even the rest of the way. If we had made some free throws in the final period, the score
would have been a lot closer.”
“We should be disappointed with this loss,” said Jess McGinlay, who finished
with seven points. “I thought we didn’t come to play. This team has three games left
and we need to show some pride.”
Danielle Hutcheson was Albany’s leading scorer with nine points. LaQuanda
@ Brickhouse had 10 off the bench for Hartford.

KARIM OUATTARA WILL MISS THE REMAINDER OF THE REGULAR SEASON
Albany, N.Y. — Karim Ouattara, a starter on the University at Albany’s men’s basketball
@ee". will miss the remainder of the regular season, as announced today by head
coach Will Brown. Ouattara will be eligible to play in the America East Conference’s
postseason tournament, which begins on March 2 in Boston, Mass.
OQuattara, a senior from Paris France, was withheld from last Saturday’s game
against Boston University, while his amateur status was reviewed by the National
Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA).
The NCAA forwarded a ruling on Ouattara’s status to the UAlbany athletic
department on Friday at 5:00 p.m. ET. The decision states that Ouattara violated
amateurism legislation when, as a member of a French club team in the late 1990s, he
played in a league that promotes itself as a professional league.
Ouattara, who is averaging 3.1 points and 4.0 rebounds, will not play this
weekend against Hartford (Feb. 22) and Stony Brook (Feb. 24). A 6-foot-7, 224-pound
center/forward, Ouattara has appeared in 24 games this season.

University at Albany Baseball Names 2002 Team Captains
Albany, N.Y. — University at Albany head baseball coach Jon Mueller named Eddie
Scott (Kingston/Kingston, N.Y.), Shawn Walsh (St. Francis Prep/Maspeth, N.Y.), Mike
Grasso (Bishop Maginn/Albany, N.Y.), and Will Haskell (Saratoga Springs/Queensbury,
N.Y.) team captains for the 2002 season.
Scott, a senior center fielder, owns a career .324 batting average with 49 RBI and
3/7 stolen bases. He has started 92 games during his career, playing at second base
one year ago. Scott led the New York State Baseball Conference in stolen bases (22)
last season.
Walsh, a senior pitcher, begins his fourth season with the Great Danes and has
made 18 career starts. He owns 36 strikeouts in 78.1 innings pitched and will be part of
this year’s starting rotation.
Grasso, a junior who will make the transition from shortstop to second base this
spring, ranked 13th nationally in triples per game in 2001. He has a career .262 batting
average with 47 RBI. Grasso led the Great Danes in triples (6) and tied for the team
lead in runs scored (42).
Haskell, a transfer from the University of Massachusetts, is a 6-foot-5 junior
pitcher. Haskell earned a spot in the starting rotation during preseason drills.
Albany travels to the University of Richmond for its season opener on Saturday,
February 23. The Great Danes then voyage to North Carolina where they face 12th-
ranked Wake Forest, UNC-Greensboro, Davidson, and High Point before returning to
Virginia to meet James Madison. The squad will finish its trip with a two-game weekend
series at Drexel on March 2-3.
UAlbany enters its inaugural season in the America East Conference. The Great
Danes’ home opener is April 2 versus Canisius. Conference play begins at Northeastern
on April 6.

UNIVERSITY AT ALBANY ADDS FOUR TO ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT STAFF
ALBANY, N.Y. — University at Albany Director of Athletics and Recreation Lee McElroy announced
today the hiring of William Schut as assistant athletics director for compliance and student
services, John Svec and Brian Vanderlofske as men’s lacrosse assistant coaches, and
Catherine Leahy as assistant women’s lacrosse coach.
Schut, who spent the previous three years as coordinator for academic compliance at the
University of Nevada-Las Vegas, will administer UAlbany’s NCAA compliance and rules education
program. As an assistant athletics director, he also oversees the academic student services and
sports medicine areas.
schut, 33, managed Nevada-Las Vegas’ compliance assistance software, coordinated the
national letter of intent program and student-athlete admissions, and was a liaison to UNLV’s
offices of admissions, registrar and student financial services. He first came to the school as an
assistant director for academic services in May 1997, and moved to the role of compliance
assistant one year later.
© A native of Bala Cynwyd, Pa., Schut earned a B.S. in recreation from UNLV, and is
expected to receive his master’s degree in education this August.
Svec, 22, joins Scott Marr’s lacrosse staff as an assistant coach. He played at Loyola
College in Maryland from 1997-2001, where he was a four-year letterman. Svec, a 6-foot-4, 220-
pound defenseman, played on the team’s man-down unit as a junior and senior. The Greyhounds
posted a 10-4 record and reached the NCAA Tournament’s quarterfinal round last year.
Svec, who hails from Arnold, Md., earned his B.A. in elementary education. He worked last
summer as a technology representative for deBeer Lacrosse, and was responsible for introducing
new equipment to campers in the Mid-Atlantic Region.
Vanderlofske, a two-time UAlbany captain, earned three varsity letters as a member of the
lacrosse program from 1998-2000. A long-stick defenseman, he started all 36 games as a
collegian, and totaled five goals and four assists and 116 ground balls during his career. He was
named team MVP as a junior. A native of Stony Brook, N.Y., Vanderlofske, 24, received an
undergraduate degree in history and psychology.
Leahy will serve as the women’s lacrosse program’s recruiting coordinator, and will be in
charge of fundraising and camps. As an assistant on first-year head coach Dennis Short’s staff,
Leahy will work with the team’s defenders.
A native of Columbus, Ohio, she started three years on Ohio University’s defense following
the program’s elevation to varsity status in 1999. Leahy, a team captain for two seasons, also
played for the school’s club lacrosse team for two years. She participated in the 2001 U.S.
Lacrosse Women’s Division National Tournament.
Leahy, 24, earned her bachelor’s degree in exercise physiology from Ohio University in
© 2000. She graduated with a master’s degree in athletic administration the following year. In
addition, she served as a student assistant in Ohio U.’s athletic department, working with the
decors of compliance, development and external affairs.

Boston, Mass.—Dustin Wilson won two events in the 55-meter high hurdles and 200-meter
dash to lead the University at Albany to a second-place finish in the men’s standings at the
America East Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships on Saturday at the Boston
Armory.
Northeastern won its third consecutive conference crown with 142 points. UAlbany
scored 127, and was followed by Boston U. with 79.
Wilson, a sophomore who’s also a tailback on the Albany football team, ran a season-
best 7.65 seconds in the high hurdles, and came from behind in the 200 to edge Northeastern’s
Andy Alsup. Wilson sprinted 22.25 seconds and outleaned Alsup at the finish line.
The Great Danes had four other individual champions. Alix Rodriques won the 55-
meter dash with |C4A-qualifying and season-best 6.43 seconds. Freshman Kristof Molnar
captured the 800 in 1:52.65. Naron Stewart won the high jump (6-09.75), while Rob Harrison
(Shaker) took the triple jump (44-07.25). Szabolcs Molnar was second in the 1,000, but set a
school record with a time of 2:26.94.
‘lam excited, because | can’t ask for any more from this team,” Albany coach Roberto
Vives said. “They performed as a team despite being predominantly sophomores and
freshmen. We established today that we are the future of this conference.”
Albany was eighth in the women’s competition. Dinnah Decatus was third in the 800,
and broke her own school standard with a time of 2:15.97. Cherice’ Vanderhall broke another
record in the 20-pound weight throw, and was fourth with a mark of 48-06.75.

University to a 68-56 America East Conference victory over Albany on Saturday at
Case Gymnasium.
Boston U. (17-9, AE 11-3) raced to a 17-5 lead to open the contest. Carr
had seven points in that outburst. The Terriers, who have won 10 of their last 12
games, stretched their margin to 15 points when Jason Grochowalski scored on
a follow-shot in the lane.
Albany (7-18, AE 4-10) trailed by ten at halftime, but closed within 33-29
on Antione Johnson’s jumper. Rhasheed Peterson, who led all scorers with a
career-high 26 points, canned one of his six 3-point field goals in that run.
The Terriers, who used a zone press defense throughout the afternoon to
force 16 Albany turnovers, still led 46-41 with 9:08 remaining, but then reeled off
eight-straight points to take control. Billy Collins, a 6-foot-7 junior who had nine
points and nine rebounds, ignited that decisive run with a 3-pointer from the left
side. Kevin Fitzgerald would later hit a fast-break layup for a 54-41 lead.
“We turned the ball over and couldn't put the ball in the hole in the first
half,” Albany coach Will Brown said. “I’ve said before Boston U. is the favorite to
win the conference tournament. They can play at a fast or slow tempo and can
win at home or on the road.”
Rashad Bell had 13 points for the Terriers, who kept solid their second-
place standing in the conference. Will Brand had 10 points for the Great Danes,
who dropped their fourth straight on the road.

added 11 rebounds as Boston U. shot 55 percent in earning an 80-61 America East Conference
victory over Albany on Saturday afternoon at the Recreation and Convocation Center.
Boston U. (15-9, AE 8-5), winners in seven of its last nine, used an 11-2 spurt early in the
second stanza and extended its lead to 45-31 on pull-up jumper at the 16:52 mark by Larissa
Parr, who finished with 19 points, two shy of a career-high. Parr had 14 of her markers in the
final period. The Terriers, who shot 65.5 percent in the half, would increase the margin to 59-39
seven minutes later as Annie Tomasini drained a three-pointer on the top right side of the arc.
Albany (4-19, AE 0-12), who tied the program’s single-season record for consecutive losses with
12, trailed by as many as 26 points late in the contest.
In the first half, the Terriers jumped out to a 19-10 advantage as Terhune, the league’s

KARIM OUATTARA WILL NOT PLAY AGAINST BOSTON UNIVERSITY
Albany, N.Y.—University at Albany’s Karim Ouattara, a starter on the men’s basketball
team, will not play against Boston University on Saturday, Feb. 16, as his amateur status
is being reviewed by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA).
Quattara, a senior from Paris, France, will be withheld from competition during the
process. The NCAA inquired about Ouattara’s status based on its national review of
international student-athletes.
“The University is working closely with the NCAA,” Director of Athletics Dr. Lee
McElroy said. “We have spoken with Karim and he understands that his eligibility review
is part of increasing concerns across the nation about international student-athletes. We
expect to bring closure to this matter soon.”
Ouattara, at 6-foot-7 and 224 pounds, has played in all 24 games for the Great
Danes this season and is averaging 3.1 points and 4.0 rebounds. He has been a starter
in the UAlbany lineup in 14 of the last 15 games.

WOMEN -— Maine 59, Albany 53
Albany, N.Y. — Heather Ernest had 13 points and 11 rebounds, as Maine won its third
straight with a 59-53 America East Conference victory over Albany on Thursday evening
at the Recreation and Convocation Center.
Maine (14-9, AE 7-5) reversed a 44-40 deficit with nine unanswered points. Missy
Traversi canned a three-point field goal from the left corner to give her team the lead for
good. Eva Moldre scored on a follow shot, before Kim Corbitt hit a jumper in transition
to finish off the run.
The Black Bears, who recorded a 30-point win in the first meeting between the
teams on Jan. 12, increased their lead to 53-46 on a pair of free throws by Monica
Peterson, who finished with 10 points and seven rebounds.
Albany (4-18, AE 0-11) would close within one basket twice in the final three
minutes. Marie Connors made two foul shots to get her club within 55-53 with 1:28 left.
Following a shot-clock violation, the Great Danes had a chance to go in front, but
Connors’ three-point attempt rattled out. Corbitt and Traversi each canned two free
throws in the stretch to keep Maine ahead.
“We knocked down our free throws and that was the game right there,” said Maine
coach Sharon Versyp, whose team made 20 of 22 from the charity stripe. “Albany is
much better than their record. They play great defense and are tough to shoot against.”
In the first half, the Black Bears tallied six straight markers to take a 26-21 lead.
Albany would draw even at the intermission, as Jess McGinlay buried a 3-pointer and
Chris Gray hit two free throws.
‘It's the little things, plus missed free throws and layups,” Albany coach Mari
Warner said. “We're a much better team that we were one month ago, but we need to
put it all together to get that win.”
McGinlay, who made 4 of 7 from three-point range, led all scorers with 16 points,
while freshman guard Becky Ayers added 11. Ernest, a 6-foot-1 sophomore, added
four assists and four steals for the Black Bears, who moved into a tie for third place in

UALBANY WILL COMPETE FOR FIRST TIME AT AMERICA EAST CONFERENCE
INDOOR TRACK & FIELD CHAMPIONSHIPS
Albany, N.Y. — The America East Conference Men’s and Women’s Indoor Track and
Field Championships will be held on Saturday, February 16 at the Boston Armory on the
Boston University campus. The University at Albany will compete for the first time in the
championship meet.
Field events begin at 9:00 a.m. with the men’s long jump, while track events are
scheduled to start at 10:30 a.m. Northeastern has won two consecutive America East
men’s championships, while Vermont captured last year’s women’s title.
UAlbany’s Jamie Rodriguez (Christian Brothers Academy) is entered in both the
men’s 3,000- and 5,000-meter events. Rodriguez has already qualified for the IC4A
championships in the 5,000, when he ran 14:35.50 at the Terrier Classic in January.
Freshman Kristof Molnar, who established a school record with a time of 1:52.62
in the 800-meter run this season, will compete in the 800 and anchor the 4x800-meter
relay. His brother, Szabolcs Molnar, is also a relay member, and is slated to run in the
1,000.
Dustin Wilson, who qualified for the |C4A meet with a personal-best 22.17
seconds in the 200-meter dash at last weekend’s Collegiate Invitational, will compete in
the 55-meter high hurdles and 200. Naron Stewart and Paul Roche (Niskayuna) are a
pair of IC4A qualifiers in the high jump, while Alix Rodriques will be one of the favorites
in the 55-meter dash.
In the women’s championship, Tammy Freeman and Dinnah Decatus will lead
the 4x800 relay, a squad that posted a season-best time of 9:25.41 in finishing second at
the Terrier Classic. Decatus is also entered in the 800, a race where she set a school
record of 2:16.27 at the State University Centers Meet this winter. Freeman, a senior
captain, will be one of the top competitors in the 500-meter event.

Boston, Mass.—Sophomore forward Jesse Dunn had 22 points to pace four players in
double-figures, as Northeastern posted a 79-59 America East Conference victory over
Albany on Tuesday at Solomon Court.
The Huskies, who had lost seven of their previous eight games, including three
one-point decisions, moved into a tie for seventh place with Albany in the conference
Standings.
Northeastern (6-18, 4-9) reversed a 22-21 deficit with nine unanswered points to
end the first half. Jermaine Hancock, who had 10 points, gave his team the lead with a
three-point field goal from the left corner. Ricky Cranford, a 6-foot-5 senior playing in
his final home game, scored in the lane and hit two free throws in that stretch.
The Huskies, who shot 51-percent from the field, made six of their first seven
three-point attempts in the second half to break the game open. Dunn, who scored 20-
plus for the third time in his last four starts, canned three long-range jumpers in that
span. His fourth 3-pointer of the game gave his club a 52-39 advantage with 12:17
remaining.
“Northeastern shot lights out from the perimeter against our zone,” Albany coach
Will Brown said. “They forced us to go man-to-man the last eight to ten minutes. Dunn
has a nice release and gets the ball off quick. For us, it’s a case of the road blues. We
have to be a half-court team and slow down the tempo.”
Albany (7-17, 4-9) trailed 16-11 in the opening period but then ran off seven
straight to go ahead. Joe Vukovic, who had a season-high 14 points and added eight
rebounds off the bench, put his team ahead. However, the Great Danes could manage
just 9 of 29 shooting in the stanza, and fell behind at the intermission.

WOMEN - Hartford 74, Albany 68
Albany, N.Y. — Kenitra Johnson had 19 points and 10 rebounds as Hartford posted its
third straight win with a 74-68 come-from-behind victory over Albany in an America East
Conference game on Monday evening at the Recreation and Convocation Center.
Hartford (10-12, AE 6-5) reversed a 39-35 halftime deficit with 14 consecutive
points to open the final stanza. Janeka Lopp, who had nine of her 12 points in the
second half, hit a layup after a steal and buried a three-point field goal from left of the
circle to give her team the lead for good.
Johnson, a 6-foot-3 senior, followed with two baskets in the outburst, before
Dorcas Miller converted a three-point play as she was fouled on a driving shot for a 48-
39 advantage. Meanwhile, Albany (4-17, AE 0-10) committed five turnovers in the
opening four minutes of the period to aid the visitors’ decisive run.
The Great Danes, who were held to 5-of-17 shooting after the intermission, would
later close within 54-50 on a pair of free throws by Kathryn Hemlock, who finished with
14 points. However, Hartford came back with six straight points, as Lopp made two foul
shots and connected on a back-door layup.
“They out-rebounded us and we can’t afford to give up those kind of points,” said
Albany coach Mari Warner, whose team lost the battle on the boards, 39-28. “Hartford
played an aggressive defense in the second half. We were not aggressive the ball, and
had trouble making entry passes.”
The first half produced eight lead changes and five ties. Jess McGinlay, who led
her team with 18 points, converted a conventional three-point play and then drilled a 3-
pointer to give her team the lead at 33-28. The Great Danes, who shot 50 percent from
the field in the period, took a four-point margin to the locker room.
Albany's Becky Ayers, a freshman guard, had 17 points, while teammate Cara
Caffell, a 6-foot-3 center, added 10 points and seven rebounds. Miller was the third
Hartford player in double figures with 11.

Albany, N.Y. — Antione Johnson equaled a season-high with 23 points in leading
Albany to a 61-45 America East Conference victory over Vermont on Sunday at the
Recreation and Convocation Center on Big Purple Growl Weekend.
The Great Danes, who knocked off the conference's first-place team, avenged a
28-point loss in the first meeting this season on Dec. 31. Vermont (17-6, AE 10-2) had
won 15 of its last 17 games entering the contest.
Albany (7-16, AE 4-8) led 39-34 in the second half, but then ran off 16 of the
game's next 20 points to pull away. Johnson, who scored 17 of his total in the final
period, ignited that decisive run with a three-point field goal and an 18-foot jumper from
the top of the key.
Karim Ouattara, who did not start due to a sore back, added all six of his points in
that stretch, including two baskets in the lane off drives from junior point guard Earv
Opong. Johnson, a 6-foot-1 junior, canned a 14-foot jumper for a 55-38 advantage with
9:38 remaining.
The Catamounts, who were held to their lowest point total of the season, struggled
from the field throughout the afternoon. Vermont shot 30.5 percent from the field,
including 4-of-28 from the three-point arc.
“They have three great players and we wanted the other people to beat us,” said
Albany coach Will Brown, whose team won for the fourth time in its last six starts. “We
needed to make them stand on the perimeter and limit (T.J.) Sorrentine’s touches.”
In the first half, Albany’s Will Brand scored in the lane to give his team the lead
for good at 17-15. The Great Danes, who led by as much as six points in the stanza,
settled for a 29-24 halftime lead as Opong buried a baseline jumper with three seconds
left. Opong, a 5-foot-7 junior, finished with 11 points, and posted career-highs with
seven rebounds and seven assists.

New York, N.Y.— Aggrey Morris led the University at Albany’s men’s 4x400-
meter relay team to a fifth-place finish in the university division section at the
second annual Collegiate Invitational on Saturday afternoon at the New York City
Armory Track & Field Center.
The Great Danes qualified for the IC4A championships in March with a time
of 2:30.82, as Morris, a sophomore, ran 49.2 seconds on the leadoff leg. Ike
Cherry, Rich Villanueva and Noel Campbell were the relay’s other members.
Dustin Wilson sprinted a personal-best 8.29 in the championship section of
the 60-meter high hurdles to finish fourth overall. His performance was the
second-fastest time in school history. Wilson advanced to the championship with
a time of 8.42 in the preliminary round.
Freshman Kristof Molnar took first in his section of the 800-meter run. He
was clocked in 1:52.66, just fourth-hundredths of a second off of his school-record
time. His brother, Szabolcs Molnar, also placed first in his section of the 800.
Szabolcs was timed in 1:56.44.
In the women’s competition, Diane Matthews ran a personal-best 2:18.87 to
take the top spot in her section of the university division 800-meter run. Dinnah
Decatus went 2:17.80 in her section of the event. Meghan Howell ran her best
one-mile time as a collegian, finishing the event in 5:16.71.

Albany, N.Y. — Libby Smith had 16 points and scored the go-ahead basket with 3:45
remaining, as Vermont rallied for a 69-65 America East Conference victory over Albany

Smith, a senior guard who had 12 second-half points, buried a 19-foot jumper to
break a 59-59 tie, before Morgan Hall canned a three-point field goal from the left
corner. Vermont (14-7, AE 8-2) increased its margin to 68-61 when Hall made two free
throws with 1:29 to play.
Albany (4-16, AE 0-9) closed within 68-65 when Danielle Hutcheson hit a follow
shot and Kathryn Hemlock canned a jumper. Following a steal, the Great Danes were
unable to convert on the offensive end, and UVM’s Dawn Cressman split a pair of foul
shots with five seconds left to seal the outcome.
The Catamounts shot 71.4 percent from the field in the second half on 15-of-21
attempts to reverse a 36-26 halftime deficit. Smith gave her team its first lead in the
period, at 45-44, when she made a reverse layup.
Vermont, who holds down second place in the America East standings, built its
advantage to 53-47, as Katie McNamara converted a three-point play when she was
fouled while scoring on the right baseline. However, the Great Danes regrouped with six
Straight points. Hutcheson, who had 16 points and 12 rebounds, drew her team even
with a put-back basket in the lane.
‘| thought we played a complete game,” Albany coach Mari Warner said. “They
attacked us right from the start in the second half, but we fought back and made it a
great finish. | thought we had a couple of good looks on that last possession.”
Aaron Yantzi scored 14, while Hall and McNamara added 11 points apiece for the
Catamounts, who posted their sixth straight victory. Albany’s Becky Ayers and

held off Albany, 62-51, on Friday evening in an America East Conference game at Chase

Hartford (11-14, AE 8-4) raced to a 9-0 lead at the start by holding the visitors scoreless
over the opening five-plus minutes. Storpirstis, who has 12 first-half points, canned one of his
four three-point field goals in that span.
The Hawks, who won for the seventh time in their last nine starts, would build its margin
to 19 points in the period. Hartford settled for a 34-20 halftime lead by limiting Albany (6-16, AE
3-8) to 35-percent shooting and 13 turnovers with a combination of full-court pressure and half-
court traps.
In the second half, the Great Danes rallied behind the play of junior guard Earv Opong,
who had 12 of his game-high 21 points in the stanza. The Great Danes sliced the deficit to five
points on two occasions, including 50-45 with 4:10 remaining on a pair of free throws by
Antione Johnson. However, Storpirstis drilled a 3-pointer from the left corner on his team’s
next possession and the Hawks stayed ahead in the stretch.
“We put ourselves in a position to win,” said Albany coach Will Brown, whose top two
scorers Will Brand and Johnson combined for 3-of-18 shooting. “It's tough when your leading
scorers struggle on the same night. We kept fighting, but we also did a good job of beating
Ourselves.”
Deon Saunders added 11 points and eight rebounds for Hartford, who remained in third
place in the conference standings. Opong, who made five of nine three-point shots, added four
rebounds, two assists and four steals to his scoring total.

meter high hurdles at the 2° Annual Armory Collegiate Invitational on Friday
evening at New York City’s Armory Track & Field Center.
Wilson sprinted to a personal-best time of 22.16 seconds in the 200-meter
dash, the second-fastest time in school history. He finished third in his section
and qualified for the IC4A championships in March. Wilson advanced to
tomorrow's championship in the 60-meter high hurdles as he finished second in
his section with a time of 8.41 seconds.
Albany native Jamie Rodriguez (Christian Brothers Academy) finished 12"
in the university section of the 3,000-meter run. The senior finished in 8:30.3
seconds, while teammate Andy Allstadt hit the tape in a personal-best time of
8:37.73.
Also in the men’s competition, Naron Stewart took first in the university
division high jump, clearing a height of 6-feet, 9-inches. Aggrey Morris finished
just nine hundredths of a second off the |C4A-qualifying standard in the 400-meter
dash. He was second in his section with a time of 49.24.
On the women’s side, Rebecca Habernig posted one of the best
performances in school history in the high jump. The freshman cleared 5-feet, 3-
inches.

FIFTH ANNUAL BIG PURPLE GROWL SCHEDULED FOR FEBRUARY 9-10
Albany, N.Y. — The University at Albany’s fifth annual Big Purple Growl is scheduled for
this weekend, Saturday, Feb. 9 and Sunday, Feb. 10. The women’s basketball team
faces Vermont on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. In the America East TV Game of the Week, the
UAlbany men also meet Vermont on Sunday at 12 noon.
The University’s winter homecoming also features Sunday's Ferocious Flapjack
Feast in the Recreation and Convocation Center's Hall of Fame Room from 10:30 a.m.
to 12 noon. The menu includes flapjacks, bacon and eggs and Belgian Waffles.
In addition, there will be carnival-like games, free entertainment for children in the
Puppy Pound on the court level and give-aways, including T-shirts on both days. Some
of the contests include a shoot for tuition, a $250.00 cash prize for best spirit, and a raffle
for an autographed jersey signed by the New York Giants’ Jason Sehorn.
A Big Purple Growl and Ferocious Flapjack Feast package includes admission to
the breakfast and the men’s basketball game. Tickets are $15 for adults, $11 for

WOMEN - Binghamton 63, Albany 54
Vestal, N.Y. — Sarah Cartmill had 17 points and seven rebounds, as Binghamton
extended its home winning streak to 15 straight with a 63-54 America East Conference
victory over Albany on Wednesday evening at West Gymnasium.
Binghamton (17-4, AE 8-2) led 12-10 midway through the first half, but then
scored 10 of the game’s next 12 markers. Leala Wegworth, a 6-foot sophomore,
scored six of her 10 points in that stretch. She hit back-to-back baskets and added a
pair of free throws for a 24-14 advantage.
The Bearcats, who defeated Albany, 60-54, just six days ago at the Recreation
and Convocation Center, held an eight-point halftime cushion. Cartmill, the conference’s
second-leading scorer, then helped her team stretch its advantage at the start of the final
period. Cartmill, a senior center, converted consecutive baskets for a 34-19 lead with
15:45 remaining.
Binghamton, the conference’s top defensive club, held the visitors to two field
goals in the opening eight minutes of the final stanza. The Bearcats built their margin to
as much as 55-29 in the second half, before Albany (4-15, AE 0-8) made a late run.
Freshman guard Becky Ayers had 11 of her 15 points in an outburst that closed the
Great Danes within seven in the final minute.
“Their guards crowded the paint because they knew our inside play is the key,”
said Ayers, whose team was held to 32-percent shooting in the first half. “We need to
get over any fears we have. There is nothing to be afraid of. We just need to pick it up
and get it done.”
“There’s no question our players need to have more confidence in their abilities,”

Binghamton 75, Albany 56
Vestal, N.Y.—Andrew Hannan and Jeffrey St. Fort each had 19 points as
Binghamton snapped a four-game losing streak with a 75-56 America East
Conference victory over Albany on Tuesday evening at West Gymnasium.
Binghamton (8-15, AE 5-7) used an 18-4 run to breakaway in the first half.
Hannan ignited the outburst with back-to-back three-point field goals. Anthony
Green added seven of his eleven points in that spurt.
The Bearcats, who shot 52.2 percent from the field, led by as much as 17
points in the opening period before settling for a 35-23 margin at the intermission.
Albany (6-15, AE 3-7) closed within seven points on two occasions in the
second half. Rhasheed Peterson, who had a team-high 15 points off the bench,
canned a 3-pointer from the top of the arc to get his club within 48-41.
However, the Bearcats responded with nine unanswered points to pull away
for good. St. Fort, a 6-foot-6 forward who became the 16" 1,000-point scorer in
school history, capped that stretch when he converted a three-point play as he
was fouled on a slam dunk in transition.
“They played extremely hard and took the game away from us,” said Albany
coach Will Brown, whose team shot 33.9 percent from the floor. “They were
physical and made us work for every shot. We just didn’t respond and we were
unable to do the things that we’ve done the last three games.”
Junior guard Antione Johnson had 13 points for the Great Danes, who saw
their three-game win streak come to an end. Binghamton’s Mike Wright was his
team’s fourth player in double figures with 13.

UALBANY’S CHRIS WYATT NAMED AMERICA EAST CO-ROOKIE OF THE WEEK
Boston, Mass. — University at Albany's Chris Wyatt has been chosen as the America
East Conference’s Spalding Co-Rookie of the Week, as announced today by the
conference office. Wyatt, a freshman from Horsham, Pa., shared the weekly award with
Vermont’s Taylor Coppenrath.
Wyatt, a 6-foot-6 forward, averaged 13.5 points, 8.5 rebounds and 2.0 steals in
two America East victories last week. He posted season-highs in points (16) and
rebounds (9) in last Saturday's 65-54 victory at Stony Brook, as the Great Danes won on
the road in conference play for the first time. Wyatt turned in an 11-point, 8-rebound
performance in a 74-57 win over New Hampshire on Jan. 30.
Wyatt is averaging 7.0 points and 3.7 rebounds in nine games since entering the
Great Danes’ starting lineup. Albany (6-14, AE 3-6) has a three-game winning streak for
the first time in two years, and has moved up to seventh place in the conference
standings.
SUNDAY’S ALBANY-VERMONT GAME ON AMERICA EAST TV NETWORK
Boston, Mass. — The America East TV Network will produce the UAlbany-Vermont men’s
basketball game on Sunday, Feb. 10. The contest will air live at 12 noon on Empire
Sports Network (Albany), Adelphia Channel (statewide in Vermont) and the ABC affiliate
in Bangor, Maine. It is also part of the ESPN Full Court package.
New England Sports Network (NESN) will show the game on a tape-delay basis
on Sunday evening at 7:00. Mike Corey handles the play-by-play. Rob Kennedy adds
color commentary.
The television broadcast will be the first at the UAlbany’s Recreation and
© Convocation Center. The 5,000-seat arena opened on Dec. 2, 1992.

WOMEN - Stony Brook 55, Albany 46
Albany, N.Y. — Danielle DeGiorgio had 17 points and Sherry Jordan added 16 in
leading Stony Brook to a 55-46 America East Conference victory over Albany on Sunday
afternoon at the Recreation and Convocation Center.
Stony Brook (12-7, AE 5-3) led 47-43 with 4:11 remaining, when Jordan converted
@ a three-point play as she was fouled on an 8-foot jumper in the lane. Jordan, who had
11 second-half points, would make a steal on Albany’s next possession. Erika Shipley,
who scored 10, later hit a fastbreak layup for a 52-43 advantage.
In the opening period, the Seawolves, who have won nine of their last 12 contests,
ran off nine straight points to break an early tie. DeGiorgio, a 6-foot sophomore, tallied
seven markers in that spurt. Her follow shot in the lane gave Stony Brook a 14-5 lead.
Albany (4-14, AE 0-7) would close within 20-19, when Danielle Hutcheson put
back a missed shot. Hutcheson, a 6-foot-4 center, recorded her sixth double-double of
the season with 11 points and 15 rebounds.
DeGiorgio, who grabbed eight rebounds, helped Stony Brook score nine of the
period's final 13 points to take a 29-23 lead at the intermission. She canned a left
baseline jumper to start the run, and finished the stretch with a follow shot at the buzzer.
The Seawolves, who held their opponent to 31-percent shooting and forced 25
turnovers, led by as much as nine points in the final stanza.
“(Sherry) Jordan is an awesome player,” said Albany guard Chris Gray, who had
seven points, four rebounds and two steals off the bench. “They didn’t show any fatigue
in the stretch. They knew they could win. | am mad right now; | want to win. We get too
excited or nervous and worry about mistakes. We need to keep our heads in the game.”
Junior guard Jess McGinlay had 11 points for the Great Danes, whose losing
streak was extended to seven straight games. Stony Brook’s Jordan added seven

UALBANY MEN SECOND AT COLGATE’S CLASS OF ’32 INVITATIONAL
Hamilton, N.Y. — University at Albany's Dustin Wilson won the 55-meter high
hurdles and placed fourth in the 200-meter dash to lead his team to a second-
place at Colgate University’s Class of ’32 Invitational on Saturday at Charles H.
Sanford Field House.
The Great Danes, who scored 102 points, finished second in the men’s
standings behind Buffalo (158) in the 11-team competition. Lehigh was third with
87.5 points, and was followed by Binghamton (86.5) and Colgate (73).
Wilson, a sophomore tailback on the UAlbany football team, sprinted 7.75
seconds to win the 55-hurdles, and was fourth in the 200-dash in 23.05. Shaun
Empie (Scotia-Glenville) cleared 14-feet, 6.75-inches to capture the pole vault
event, while Joe Pienta (Ichabod Crane) was first in the 3,000-meter run with a
time of 8:41.74.
Paul Roche (Niskayuna) placed second in the high jump with a leap of 6-
feet, 9-inches, and qualified for the |C4A championships in March. Rob Harrison
(Shaker) was second in the triple jump (46-0).
In the women's meet, UAlbany’s Zerlinda Martinez raced to a second-place
finish in the 1,000-meter run with a time of 3:09.21. Kristen O’Brien tied for fifth
in the pole vault (9-4.25), while Nicole Susser (Colonie Central) was sixth in the
3,000 (11:09.75).

Stony Brook, N.Y. — Antione Johnson and Chris Wyatt each had 16 points, as Albany won its
third straight with a 65-54 America East Conference victory over Stony Brook on Saturday at the
SBU Sports Complex.
Albany (6-14, AE 3-6) reversed a 39-38 deficit with ten unanswered points. The Great
Danes, who held their opponent scoreless for more than eight minutes, took the lead for good
on Wyatt's jumper with 10:42 remaining. Wyatt, a 6-foot-6 freshman, scored a season-high total
and added a season-best nine rebounds. Will Brand had two baskets in that decisive outburst,
and Karim Ouattara hit a slam dunk for a 48-39 lead with 5:08 to play.
The Great Danes, who won for the first time on the road in conference play, extended its
lead to 53-41 when Earv Opong drove into the lane and dished off to Brand for a layup. Stony
Brook (3-18, AE 2-8) never got closer than seven points in the stretch, as Albany made 12 of 14
free throws in the final two minutes.
In the first half, the Seawolves shot 52 percent from the field en route to a 32-31 halftime
advantage. D.J. Munir, who had 21 of his game-high 28 points in the opening period, made a
jumper at the buzzer to send his club to the locker room with a lead. Munir, a sophomore guard,
added six rebounds, four assists and two steals.
“We didn't play that well, but we put ourselves in a position to win,” said Albany coach
Will Brown, whose team owns its longest winning streak since the 1999-2000 season. “We
made plays down the stretch and stayed aggressive. Our seniors want to leave on a positive
note. We are learning to create our own energy and making progress on the floor.”
Brand finished with 14 points, while Joe Vukovic added five points and a career-high 13
rebounds off the bench. Stony Brook’s Mike Orfini was the only other player on his team in
double figures with 12. The Seawolves, who have lost six of their last seven outings, swept the
season series between both schools last year.

New York, N.Y.— Aggrey Morris anchored the University at Albany’s men’s 4x400-meter relay
to a second-place finish out of six teams at the 95" running of the Verizon Millrose Games on
Friday evening at Madison Square Garden. The Great Danes were fourth in the women’s 4x400
event and finished seventh in the men’s 4x800 relay.
UAlbany was timed in 3:30.13 in the men’s 4x400 race, finishing 1.26 seconds behind
winner Montclair State. Morris finished with a split of 50.9 seconds, and was joined on the relay
by Noel Campbell, Ike Cherry and Rich Villanueva.
Long Island took the women’s 4x400 title in 3:58.22, just two hundredths of a second
better than Wheaton. The Great Danes were timed in 4:06.41 to take third place, as Monmouth
edged Albany at the finish.
In the men’s 4x800 event, UAlbany finished seventh with a time of 8:02.75. The
Syracuse Chargers Track Club took the title, followed closely by the New York Athletic Club.

Albany, N.Y.—Sophomore Lindsay Suffredini won at both third singles and first
doubles to lead Colgate to a 7-0 non-conference win over Albany on Friday
afternoon. The Great Danes’ spring season-opener was held at the Schenectady
Racquet Club.
UAlbany’s tandem of Alex Berley (Shenendehowa) and Krista Babiarz
dropped their match at first doubles, 8-5, to Suffredini and Emily Wenink. The
Great Danes’ second-doubles team of Marisa Berley (Shenendehowa) and Stacy
Kaminski also fell by an 8-5 margin.
Marisa Berley, a freshman, played at No. 1 singles for the first time. She
dropped a 6-0, 6-1 decision to Marissa Alikpala. Alex Berley fell to Lauren
