WOMEN’S LACROSSE
Staten Island, N.Y. — Senior midfielder Krissie Fischer had four goals and one
assists and Kelly McVeigh added three goals and two assists to lead Wagner to a
13-9 victory over Albany in the season finale for both teams on Monday afternoon
at Wagner College Stadium.
Wagner (9-6) leaped to a 3-0 lead, when Julie Rudderow found the net on
a feed from Jackie Losquadro with 24:46 left in the period. McVeigh scored three
times in first half to help stake her club to a 9-4 halftime advantage.
Albany (5-10) closed within 11-9 with 13:13 remaining on Maria Ferrucci’s
fourth goal of the game. Jill Pyzik scored unassisted four minutes later, before
Fischer sealed the outcome with her 33rd goal this season.
Albany’s Andrea Esposito (Saratoga Springs H.S.) had three goals and
three assists. Dawn DiMicco, the school’s career scoring leader with 182 points,
added a pair of goals.

WOMEN’S SOFTBALL
© Niagara University, N.Y. — Left fielder Stacy Pino had six hits, including two
doubles, and drove in four runs to lead Niagara to a doubleheader sweep over
Albany on Monday afternoon at Niagara Field. The Purple Eagles won the
twinbill, 7-4 and 3-2.
Niagara (10-16) scored three times in the fourth inning of the opener to build
a 6-1 lead. Jodie Bowers lined a two-run double down the left-field line, before
Randi Lawton added a RBI single. Lawton went 4-for-4 at the plate in the
contest, and scored a pair of runs.
In the nightcap, reliever Tegan Bennett picked up her second save this
spring when she worked out of a jam in the seventh. Albany (20-23) had the tying
and winning runs aboard, before Bennett induced a pair of groundouts to the end
the game. The Purple Eagles had taken a 3-1 lead in the second, when Pino
delivered a RBI single.
Albany's Lynnette Bohannon had three hits, including two doubles, and
four RBI on the day. Shortstop Valerie Terry totaled three hits and two stolen
bases.

J.T. HERFURTH AND MARIAH MARTIN AWARDED ECAC MERIT MEDALS
Great Dane Awards Scheduled for Saturday, May 5
ALBANY, N.Y. — Director of Athletics and Recreation Lee McElroy announced today that J.T. Herfurth and
Mariah Martin have been chosen to receive Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Merit Medals.
The awards are annually given to the school’s top senior male and female student-athletes who have shown
excellence in the classroom and as competitive athletes during the current academic year.
Herfurth and Martin will be honored at the first-ever Great Dane Awards on Saturday, May 5. The
all-sports awards banquet will recognize the most valuable players on each of UAlbany’s 19 varsity teams
for men and women. In addition, the 2000-01 Presidential Scholar-Athlete Award recipients will be
announced. The event will be held at the Recreation and Convocation Center on campus at 6:00 p.m.
Martin, a captain on the women’s field hockey team, posted a 3.94 cumulative grade point average
in business administration with a minor in economics. She was chosen to the 2001 Verizon District | At-
Large Academic All-America squad, and is a three-time member of the National Field Hockey Coaches
Association’s national academic team. Martin scored four goals and six assists in leading Albany to a 10-8
record in 2000. A native of Riverhead, N.Y., she interned with the Albany County Bar Association, and
served on the University’s Intercollegiate Athletics Advisory Board (IAAB). Her community service projects
include work with American Heart Walk, American Red Cross, United Way and Cystic Fibrosis.
Herfurth, a first-team All-America offensive tackle in football, has a 3.89 GPA in sociology with a
minor in psychology. He became the first UAlbany athlete to be selected to the Verizon University Division
Academic All-America national first team, and was voted the Northeast Conference’s Fall Scholar-Athlete.
Herfurth, of East Northport, N.Y., was chosen to the Associated Press, American Football Coaches
Association and Football Gazette Division I-AA All-America teams. Football Gazette also picked him as the
Division I-AA Mid-Major Offensive Lineman of the Year. A first-team all-conference selection, Herfurth
played in the 2001 Hula Bowl All-Star Classic.

BASEBALL
Binghamton, N.Y. — Left fielder Jake Toms doubled, singled twice and scored
three runs to lead Albany to a 12-4 non-conference victory over Binghamton on
Sunday afternoon at West Gym Fields.
Binghamton (15-22-1) took a 4-3 lead in the sixth inning on a RBI single by
Tom Cummings, who had three hits on the day. Albany (13-27) rallied with a six-
run seventh. Third baseman Mike Kuebler lined a two-run double down the left-
field line to put his team ahead. Mike Grasso (Bishop Maginn) followed with a
run-scoring single, before Toms smacked another single to drive in two more runs.
Albany's Michael Tecklenburg belted a three-run homer, his seventh of the
season, for insurance in the ninth. Sophomore right-hander Ryan Pitt allowed
three earned runs in 7.1 innings on the mound to record his second victory of the
spring.

TRACK & FIELD
Philadelphia, Pa. — University at Albany’s Marlon Monroe finished second in the eastern
triple jump on Saturday afternoon at the 107th Penn Relays.
Monroe leaped a season-best 48-feet, 5.25-inches to place just behind champion
& Jeka Luhahi, of Western Michigan. Luhahi posted a mark of 48-08. Monroe, who was
fifth in Friday’s eastern high jump, qualified for the |C4A championships in Princeton,
New Jersey on May 17-20.
In addition, the Great Danes were 18th in the women’s 4x800 relay with a time of
9:13.40 over the Franklin Field surface. Jessica Walton (Fonda-Fultonville) and
Jessica Burger (Granville Central) ran the first and fourth legs.
BASEBALL
Binghamton, N.Y. — First baseman Jamie Boyer had five hits, including a homer, and
drove in four runs to lead Binghamton to a New York State Baseball Conference
doubleheader sweep over Albany on Saturday afternoon at West Gym Fields. The
Bearcats came from behind in both games, 6-3 and 7-5.
In the opener, Binghamton (15-21-1, NYSBC 3-5) broke a 3-3 tie with a three-run
eighth inning. Tyler McGonigal and Kyle Loucks each had RBI singles. Albany (12-
27, NYSBC 3-5) held a 3-0 lead heading into the middle innings, but Martin Cadieux’s
RBI single in the sixth drew his team even.
The Great Danes took a 5-4 lead in the nightcap on Michael Oliva’s fourth-inning
sacrifice fly. But Binghamton went in front by scoring twice in the sixth, when Boyer
reached home plate on a passed ball and Cadieux singled in the go-ahead run.
Albany's Michael Tecklenburg had three hits, including a double, and scored a
pair of runs on the day.

WOMEN’S LACROSSE
Albany, N.Y. — Sophomore midfielder Emily Lilyea scored three goals, including the
game-winner with 21 seconds remaining, as St. Bonventure posted a 14-13 victory over
Albany on Saturday afternoon in the Great Danes’ final home game at Varsity Field.
Albany (5-9) rallied from a 13-9 deficit by scoring four times over an eight-minute
period. Dawn DiMicco, who had four goals and two assists, and Alexis DiDomenico
each found the net twice in that stretch. DiMicco, the school’s career scoring leader who
was making her final home appearance, tied the contest on a free-position shot inside
the far post with 1:44 left.
Lilyea answered on the Bonnies’ next possession, when she took Colleen
Crane’s pass from behind and deposited her 36th goal of the season into the cage.
Freshman Laura Spaulding led all scorers with six goals and one assist, and helped St.
Bonaventure (6-10) build a 12-7 advantage midway through the final period.
Goalkeeper Katy Jensen made 21 saves for the Bonnies, who had lost five of
their last six starts. Albany’s DiDomenico finished with four goals, while Andrea
Esposito added one goal and three assists.

Colgate (3-9) used a five-goal first quarter to take control early. Dobbins, who
scored three times in the opening period, sent a shot inside the far post just 18 seconds
into the contest. Obie Bate, a sophomore attack, added three first-half goals to stake
the Red Raiders to a 9-2 halftime lead.

Philadelphia, Pa. - Marlon Monroe finished fifth in the men’s eastern high jump to
highlight the University at Albany’s performances on Friday at the 107th Penn Relays.
Monroe, a sophomore, leaped a season-best 6-feet, 9-inches, and qualified for the
@ IC4A championships in Princeton, New Jersey on May 17-20. UAlbany’s John Morris
was 11th in the competition with a mark of 6-07.50.
The Great Danes also placed fifth in the men’s CTC 4x400-meter relay. The

single keyed the at-bat. Terry, who stole her 39th base of the season in the contest,
singled and scored in both the first and third. Sarah Maida improved to 10-12 on the
mound by scattering six hits and recording 10 strikeouts.
In the second game, Kara Massey fired a one-hit shutout to post her third victory
this spring. Massey, a freshman right-hander, struck out five and walked one, and
allowed just a fourth-inning single by Lynnette Bohannon. Amanda Surgen had a RBI!
single in the first for the Catamounts, who upped their record to 10-23.
The Great Danes, who reached the 20-win mark for the fifth straight year, play

UALBANY’S RODRIGUEZ WINS 5,000 METERS AT 107th PENN RELAYS
Philadelphia, Pa. — University at Albany’s Jamie Rodriguez (Christian Brothers
Academy) became the first athlete in school history to win an individual event at
© Penn Relays, when he finished first in the college section 5,000-meter run on
Thursday evening at Franklin Field.
Rodriguez, who took the lead with one lap remaining, ran a personal-best
14:29.55 to edge Boston College’s Justin Burdon by 24-hundredths of a second.
Bucknell’s Greg Costello was third in 14:32.85. Rodriguez’s time ranks second
on Albany's all-time performance chart behind school record-holder William
Vanos, and qualifies him for the IC4A championships in Princeton, New Jersey on
May 17-20.
“| expected the pace to be much faster,” said Rodriguez, whose previous
best effort was 14:34.60 at North Carolina State’s Raleigh Relays in March.
“There were 10 or 12 runners near the lead with one mile to go. | was not tired
and still felt strong. It was the kind of race where you have take the situation
given, and | went for the lead with a half mile left and didn’t look back.”

Vestal, N.Y. — Third base Jen Richardson drove in the winning run with a single in the
10" inning of the opener, and Binghamton went on to sweep a doubleheader from
Albany on Thursday afternoon at Bearcat Complex. Binghamton won the first game, 3-

innings. Shortstop Valerie Terry (South Glens Falls) tripled into the right-field gap to
score Valerie Brown (Mechanicville). Richardson’s RBI single in tenth decided the
outcome.
Michelle Weeks fired a three-hitter in the second game to improve to 6-9 on the
mound. Weeks recorded 10 strikeouts and did not walk a batter. Binghamton (12-22)
reversed a 1-0 deficit with a three-run fifth. Richardson, who had three hits in the
twinbill, tied the game with a RBI single, before Kim Gruber scored the go-ahead runs
with a base-hit to centerfield.

Philadelphia, Pa. - Tammy Freeman sprinted 58.1 seconds on the second leg to lead
the University at Albany to a first-place finish in the women’s CTC 4x400-meter relay on
Thursday afternoon at the 107th Penn Relays.
The Great Danes covered the Franklin Field surface in 3:56.69, and were 38-
hundredths of a second better than runner-up Southern Connecticut State. Jessica
Burger (Granville Central) went 59.6 seconds on UAlbany’s first leg, while Dinnah
Decatus and Diane Matthews were the other members of the relay.
Freeman, a junior captain, will also run the 200-meter leg as part of Albany’s sprint
medley relay on Friday.

Albany, N.Y. — The University at Albany will send 23 men’s and women’s track and field
athletes to this week's 107th Penn Relays Carnival in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
“This is the equivalent of the Super Bowl or World Series for track athletes,” said
© Albany coach Roberto Vives, who is his 16th season at the helm. “Besides the
Olympics and World Championships, Penn Relays draws the biggest crowds. It is
certainly an exciting atmosphere and a focal point for athletes in the Northeast,
especially with 45,000 people in attendance on the weekend.”
Fifteen men and eight women will compete in individual events and relays. Jamie
Rodriguez (Christian Brothers Academy) is entered in the 5,000-meter run, while
Ronald Edmundson and Marlon Monroe are in the eastern triple jump field. Naron
Stewart, John Morris and Monroe will also compete in the high jump.
The women’s 4x800-meter relay has already set a school record this season with
a time of 9:09.40 at North Carolina State’s Raleigh Relays. UAlbany relay members
Jessica Walton (Fonda-Fultonville), Jessica Burger (Granville Central), Dinnah
Decatus and Diane Matthews are scheduled to run on Saturday afternoon. Burger is
also a 4x400-relay participant.
The men’s 4x100 relay, which posted an IC4A-qualifying time of 42.40 seconds
last Saturday, includes Alix Rodriques, football wide receiver Jonathan Garrick,
Edmundson and Morris. Paul Roche (Niskayuna) is a member of Albany’s shuttle
hurdles relay.
The Great Danes are also entered in men’s 4x400 relay, and men’s and women’s
sprint medley relays.

sacrifice fly. However, reliever Mike Jorgensen earned his first save, as Mike Volkmar
hit a fly ball to centerfield to end the game.
In the nightcap, the Dolphins jumped out to a 5-0 lead. Steven Suarez lined a
run-scoring single in the first inning. Kyle Brown, who had three hits and drove in three
runs on the day, had a RBI single in a four-run second. Shortstop Anthony Aquilino
singled three times and scored twice in the contest.
Albany's Michael Oliva totaled four hits, including his 12th double of the season,
and raised his batting average to .457 overall. Oliva also had two RBI for the Great
Danes, who beat Le Moyne for the first time in eight meetings.

Worcester, Mass. — Freshman midfielder Katie Britt scored four of her season-
high five goals in the first half to lead Holy Cross to a 16-10 victory over Albany on
Tuesday evening at Hart Center Astroturf Field.
® Holy Cross (12-6) led 5-4 midway through the opening period, but then
reeled off four unanswered goals to take control. Sophomore attack Erin Rowse,
who had three goals and two assists, scored twice in that stretch. She set up
Beth Dale for a two-goal lead with 15:57 left in the period, and then scored
unassisted 24 seconds later. Katie Grant, who had two goals and two assists,
converted a free-position shot to complete the decisive run.

Burlington, Vt. — Junior Jeff Tarigo belted a pinch-hit three-run homer in the
eighth inning to lift Vermont past Albany, 7-4, in a non-conference game on
Tuesday afternoon at Centennial Field.
Tarigo cleared the right-field fence with his fourth home run of the season to
break a 4-4 deadlock. Vermont (19-13) had taken a 4-3 lead in the fifth, when
shortstop Scott Bourhill singled and later stole home.
Albany (10-23) drew even at four apiece in the sixth on Steve Checksfield’s
RBI single. Checksfield, a senior right fielder, finished with three hits, including his
11th double of the season. Michael Oliva, the nation’s eighth-leading hitter with a

In the opener, Greene lined a RBI double off the left-field fence to break a 2-2
deadlock in the sixth inning. He later scored on a wild pitch to give Albany (10-21) a two-
run lead. Left-hander Mike Burke improved to 3-1 by scattering five hits in a complete-
game effort. Steve Checksfield smacked a solo home run, his 200th career hit, in the
first.
In the second game, Eddie Scott belted his second home run, a solo blast down
the left-field line, to put the Great Danes on top, 4-3, in the second. Albany scored four

In the first contest, Terry singled to center field in the seventh inning to score Nikki

MEN’S LACROSSE
Staten Island, N.Y. — Freshman attack Michael Solazzo had four goals and three
assists, and Albany used a six-goal fourth quarter to post a 16-9 victory over Wagner on
Saturday afternoon at Wagner College Lower Field.
Albany (3-7) led 10-7 heading into the final period, but then scored six consecutive
times over the next seven minutes to take control. Sean Donnellan, who had four
goals, and Solazzo each scored twice in that stretch.
Wagner (1-11) took a 2-0 lead in the opening six minutes of play, but the Great
Danes rallied with five unanswered goals to go ahead. Junior attack Jim Lindsay, who
totaled three goals and five assists, led the comeback.
The Seahawks’ James Servidio had three goals, including his 23rd of the season,
and three assists. Bryan Gallagher added three goals and two assists. Sal Massa had
two goals and three assists for the Great Danes, who recorded back-to-back victories for
the first time this season.

Syracuse, N.Y. — University at Albany’s Adam Rice and Naron Stewart won the 1,500-
meter run and high jump, respectively, and Marlon Monroe qualified for the IC4A
championships in the triple jump at Syracuse University’s Leslie & Judith Vielbig
Invitational on Saturday afternoon. Six colleges and three track clubs were represented
at the non-scoring meet.
Rice was first in the 1,500 with a time of 3:58.36, while Stewart went 6-feet, 4-
inches in the high jump. Monroe finished second in the triple jump with a mark of 47-
07.25. He qualified for the IC4A meet on May 17-20 in Princeton, New Jersey. Two
UAlbany football players, Jonathan Garrick and Chad Plaines, helped the 4x100 relay
qualify for |C4As. Garrick and Plaines teamed with Alix Rodriques and John Morris to
post a second-place time of 42.40 seconds.
Sophomore Paul Roche (Niskayuna H.S.) was second in the 110-meter high
© hurdles (15.41) and third in the long jump (21-11.00). Dane Winget took second in the
400-hurdles (56.92) and third in the 110-hurdles (15.99). Max DeSieno (Guilderland)
and Joe Pienta (Ichabod Crane) posted third-place finishes in the javelin and 3,000-
meter steeplechase.
In the women’s competition, Tammy Freeman led Albany’s 4x400 relay to victory
with a time of 4:03.11. Freeman also placed third in the 400-meter dash (1:00.21).
Stacy Kupcheni (Shenendehowa) won the javelin with a toss of 113-0, and was just
seven inches off the school record. Freshman Jessica Walton (Fonda-Fultonville) took
third in the 800 with a time of 2:16.62.
The Great Danes will compete in next week’s 107th Penn Relays in Philadelphia.

In the nightcap, St. Rose (5-20) held an early 1-0 lead on Kori-Ann Taylor’s
RBI single. However, the Great Danes scored five times in the second, when
shortstop Valerie Terry lined a three-run triple into the left-field corner. Terry
totaled three hits, two runs, two stolen bases and four RBI in the two-game set.

Amherst, Mass. — Sophomore attack Leslie Pollock had four goals and two
assists to power Massachusetts to a 19-2 victory over Albany on Thursday
afternoon at Ruth J. Totman Field. The Minutewomen posted their highest scoring
total of the season.
Massachusetts (4-8) recorded back-to-back wins for the first time this year
by jumping out to a 6-1 lead in the opening 10 minutes of play. Jada Emery, who
had four goals overall, and Pollock each scored twice in that stretch.
Rachel Ingraffea netted four goals, while goalkeepers Jen Nardi and
Cyndi Doyle combined to make 10 saves. Sophomore attack Andrea Esposito

America East Adds Binghamton University
BOSTON— The America East Conference will add Binghamton University to its membership effective July 1, 2001, it was
announced today by commissioner Chris Monasch. The addition of Binghamton brings the America East membership to nine
institutions for the 2001-02 academic year.
The expansion is the second for the conference in less than three months. The University at Albany and Stony Brook Univer-
sity were added to membership on January 31, 2001.
“The America East Conference is very excited about the addition of Binghamton University," said Monasch. "The institution is
a natural fit for the conference with an academic and athletics mission similar to our current members. Combined with the
recent additions of Albany and Stony Brook the conference is now positioned to move forward as a significant mid-major
conference in this part of the country."

Albany, N.Y. — Junior attack Jim Lindsay scored the go-ahead goal midway
through the fourth quarter, as Albany snapped a five-game losing streak with an 8-
6 victory over Hartford on Wednesday afternoon at Varsity Field.
@ Lindsay, who had missed the last three games with a shoulder injury,
snapped a 6-6 deadlock with 6:12 remaining, when he beat goalkeeper Rorke
Greene from the top of the crease. Bobby Gabriel added his second fourth-
period goal two minutes later for insurance.
Hartford (5-5) drew even at six apiece with 9:45 left, when Brian LaMastro,
the nation’s eighth-leading scorer, hit the net off Tom Fallica’s winning faceoff.
LaMastro finished with two goals and two assists. The contest went back and
forth, as neither club held more than a one-goal lead through three quarters.
Hartford's Kevin Garvey had two goals and one assist, while Greene made
20 saves. Freshman Michael Solazzo led Albany (2-7) with two goals and one
assist.

Buffalo, N.Y. — Center fielder Ishmael Cox doubled, tripled and drove in five runs
to lead Canisius to a doubleheader sweep over Albany on Wednesday afternoon
at Demske Sports Complex. The Golden Griffins won the twinbill, 9-1 and 12-6.
Canisius (10-14) used a six-run third inning to take control in the opener.
Cox cleared the bases with a triple into the right-field gap during the uprising.

EARV OPONG SIGNS TO PLAY MEN’S BASKETBALL IN 2001-02
Albany, N.Y. — University at Albany men’s basketball coach Scott Beeten
announced today that Earv Opong has signed a national letter of intent to play for
the Great Danes in 2001-02.
Opong, a 5-foot-7, 135-pound point guard from Bronx, N.Y. (Christopher
Columbus H.S.), averaged 12.8 points, 8.6 assists and 3.4 steals this past season
at Sullivan County Community College in Loch Sheldrake, New York. He earned
All-Region XV, All-District V and All-Mid-Hudson Conference recognition.
Sullivan County C.C. posted a 30-2 record, and reached the National Junior
College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II] Tournament championship final
in March. He contributed 10 points and 10 assists per game for the Generals in
his first season with program in 1999-2000.
“He has a chance to be a real good point guard,” said Beeten, whose
UAlbany program moves to the America East Conference next year. “Earv is
experienced mentally with terrific quickness and great ball skills. He Knows how to
win as evidenced by Sullivan’s regional junior college championship. You cannot
put a price on the experience he will bring to the program.”
UAlbany previously signed Dustin Brown, a 6-foot-7, 215-pound forward
from San Rafael, Calif. (San Rafael H.S.) last fall, and Michael Clarke, a 6-foot-5,
210-pound forward from Brooklyn, N.Y. (William Grady H.S.) during the current
spring period.

Fairfield, Conn. — Sophomore midfielder Michelle Bruckner scored a season-high

Albany, N.Y.— Steve Checksfield belted a three-run homer in the eighth to put his team
ahead in the opener, as Albany split a New York State Baseball Conference
doubleheader with Pace on Saturday afternoon in the Great Danes’ home opener at
Varsity Field. Albany (7-19, NYSBC 3-3) won the first game, 17-16, but dropped the
second, 12-11.
In the opener, Pace (10-19, NYSBC 3-3) drew even in the eighth at 14 apiece on
Doug Hehner’s RBI single. Checksfield broke the tie in the bottom of the frame with his
fifth home run of the season over the left-field fence. The Setters closed within 17-16 in
the ninth on Frank Siano’s run-scoring single. Siano finished with seven hits, including
a home run and a double, in the two games. Albany reliever Craig Straus struck out
Marc DeLuca to end the contest.
Pace rallied from an 11-8 deficit in the nightcap. First baseman Keith Bohlander,
who drove in five runs on the day, hit a two-run homer in the fourth, and plated the
winning run with a single in the fifth.
Albany's Michael Oliva slugged a three-run homer in both ends of the twinbill,

Knoxville, Tenn. — University at Albany’s Jessica Walton (Fonda-Fultonville H.S.)
qualified for the USA Junior National Championships in the 1,500-meter run at the 35th
Sea Ray Relays on Saturday afternoon at the University of Tennessee's Tom Black
Track.
Walton ran a season-best 4:40.96 to finish eighth in her section and 30th overall.
The UAlbany freshman’s time places her in the 1,500 field at junior nationals, for ages 19
and under, on June 16-17 in Richmond, Virginia.
Walton was also a member of Albany’s 4x800-meter relay that placed third in its
section and 11th overall with a time 9:29.09. Jessica Burger (Granville Central),
Megan Roeder and Diane Matthews joined Walton on the unit.
Albany’s 4x800 relay was 14th in the men’s competition. The squad of Ike
Cherry, Ed Fotiades, Adam Rice and Noel Campbell finished eighth in its section, and
was timed in 7:56.74.
MEN’S LACROSSE
Stony Brook, N.Y. — Junior midfielder Kevin Pall scored three of his four goals in the
third quarter, as Stony Brook broke open a tight game and went on to post an 18-8 non-
conference victory over Albany on Saturday afternoon at Seawolves Field.
Stony Brook (4-6) reeled off seven unanswered goals to break a 4-4 deadlock in
third period. Pall, wno has 34 goals on the season, took a pass from Dennis Nafte off a
face-off to begin the barrage, and later scored two more times in that decisive run. Matt
Campolettano added a pair of goals in that stretch.
Junior attack Jon Tompkins had three goals and one assist for the Seawolves,
who faced Albany (1-7) for the first time since 1990.
The Great Danes, who played without injured leading-scorer Jim Lindsay for the
third straight game, drew even at four apiece right after halftime on an unassisted goal
by Alan Beach. Jon Smith led the UAlbany attack with two goals, while goalkeeper

MICHAEL CLARKE SIGNS TO PLAY MEN’S BASKETBALL IN 2001-02
Albany, N.Y. — University at Albany men’s basketball coach Scott Beeten announced
today that Michael Clarke has signed a national letter of intent to play for the Great
Danes in 2001-02.
Clarke, a 6-foot-5, 210-pound forward from Brooklyn, N.Y. (William Grady H.S.),
averaged 16.5 points and nine rebounds. He led his team to the Public Schools Athletic
League (PSAL) championship, as he earned MVP honors with an 18-point, 11-rebound
effort in the title game against Paul Robeson. The Falcons finished 26-4 overall and
reached the New York State Federation Class A semifinals. Clarke was ranked among
Brooklyn I-A Division’s top-10 scorers and rebounders.
“He’s an undersized inside power guy, who plays extremely hard,’ said Beeten,
whose UAlbany squad will compete for the first time in the America East Conference
next year. “Michael is tough, and proves that size is not needed to be successful. He
comes from programs, both at the high school and AAU level, that are experienced in
winning.”
Albany inked Dustin Brown, a 6-foot-7, 215-pound forward from San Rafael,

TRACK & FIELD
Knoxville, Tenn. — University at Albany's Adam Rice placed 19th in the 3,000-meter
steeplechase, while Jamie Rodriguez (Christian Brothers Academy) was 23rd in the
10,000-meter run at the 35th Sea Ray Relays on Friday at the University of Tennessee's
Tom Black Track.
Rice ran a season-best time of 9:34.79 in the steeplechase, and was seventh in
his section. Rodriguez, who was competing in the 10,000 for the first time this spring,
finished in 33:05.11.
UAlbany assistant track coach Jeffrey York (Troy H.S.) captured third place in

WOMEN’S LACROSSE
Albany, N.Y. — Senior midfielder Dawn DiMicco had five goals and four assists, and
became the school's all-time scoring leader, as Albany posted a 23-12 victory over Le
Moyne on Thursday afternoon at Varsity Field.
Albany (5-5) led 13-10 at halftime, but then pulled away with seven unanswered
goals to begin the final period. Freshman Alexis DiDomenico, who totaled a season-
high seven goals with one assist, scored once and assisted on another goal in that
stretch. Colleen Maresca netted two of her three goals during that decisive run, as the
Great Danes registered their highest scoring total since 1995.
DiMicco, who totaled four goals and three assists in the first half, surpassed
Debbie August (1993-96) as Albany’s career scoring leader. DiMicco has 170 points on
112 goals and 58 assists.
Sophomore Amanda Daniels led Le Moyne (4-5) with five goals and one assist,
while Colleen Sperry added three goals and one assist.

MAREE JONES SIGNS TO PLAY WOMEN’S BASKETBALL IN 2001-02
Albany, N.Y. — University at Albany women’s basketball coach Mari Warner announced
today that Maree Jones has signed a national letter of intent to play for the Great Danes
in 2001-02.
Jones, a 6-foot-1 forward/center from Albany, N.Y. (Albany H.S.), averaged 18.4
points as a senior. She ranked seventh among Section II's top scorers, and led the
Falcons to a share of third place in the Big Ten conference standings.
“lam pleased we were able to attract a local player,” said Warner, who recently
completed her 19th season as head coach, and will lead UAlbany into America East
Conference play next year. “Maree’s potential is enormous, and she will help our
program will her athleticism. She is a versatile and instinctive player, who can face the
basket and is a tremendous offensive rebounder.”
Albany inked three players last November. Becky Ayers, a 5'10” forward from
Canandaigua, N.Y. (Canandaigua Academy), Danielle Hutcheson, a 6’3” center from
Phoenix, Ariz. (Greenway H.S.) and Alicia Learn, a 6’2” forward from Watkins Glen,
N.Y. (Watkins Glen H.S.) signed during the early period.
WOMEN’S SOFTBALL
Albany, N.Y. — Chelsey LaRue drove in the winning run in both games to lead Albany to
a non-conference doubleheader sweep over Niagara on Thursday afternoon in the Great
Danes’ home opener at Albany Field. Albany won the twinbill, 6-5 and 6-5.
In the opener, Albany (11-14) trailed 5-4 in the sixth, but pinch-hitter Amy Hawk
tied the contest with a RBI single to centerfield. LaRue singled past the third-base bag in
the eighth to chase home Liz Wieboldt with the go-ahead run.
In the second game, the Great Danes used a four-run fifth inning to reverse a 3-2
deficit. Wieboldt’s two-run double put her team on top, before LaRue plated what proved
to be the winning runs with a single.
Niagara (3-11) closed within 6-5 in the seventh, as second base Jodie Bowers
belted a two-run homer over the right-field fence. Bowers finished with three hits and
four RBI. Albany reliever Sarah Maida retired all three batters she faced to earn her
third save.
Freshman Jessica Kostenblatt went 5-for-6 at the plate with a double and a triple
for the Great Danes.

BASEBALL
Brookline, Mass. — Ben Beck doubled twice and drove in a pair of runs as
Northeastern posted back-to-back wins for the first time this season with a 9-6
victory over Albany on Wednesday afternoon at Friedman Diamond.
Northeastern (6-15) led 3-2 in the fifth, but then broke the game open with a
five-run inning. Beck plated two runners with a double down the left-field line in
the uprising. Corley O’Donnell and Mike Wysong added solo homers in the third
and eighth, respectively, for the Huskies.
Albany (6-18) brought the tying run to the plate in the ninth, but reliever
John Burns earned his first save as first baseman Jeff Rossiter flied out to right
field to end the game. Michael Tecklenburg went 4-for-5 at the plate, including
his second home run of the season, a solo blast, in the sixth. Steve Checksfield
and Eddie Scott each had two hits for the Great Danes.

to lead Boston College to a non-conference doubleheader sweep over Albany on

games to lead St. John’s to a doubleheader sweep over Albany on Tuesday
afternoon at Mitchel Field. The Red Storm won the first game, 4-2, and the
second, 1-0 in extra innings.
Houghton singled to left field in the nightcap’s ninth inning to score shortstop
Tiffany Howerton with the game's lone run. Pitcher Courtney Fitzgerald fired a
one-hit shutout with eight strikouts and two walks, and upped her record on the
mound to 11-10. Albany's Nikki Carella singled in the third.
In the opener, St. John’s (21-22) was led by second base Alesha Aregeras
who singled twice and drove in a pair of runs. Albany (9-14) tied the contest at
two apiece in the fourth, as Lynnette Bohannon and Chelsey LaRue each
singled and scored. Houghton drilled a two-run double into the left-field gap to
break the tie in the bottom of the inning.

Brookville, N.Y. — Steve Checksfield singled in the go-ahead run in the ninth
inning of the first game, as Albany swept a New York State Baseball Conference
doubleheader from C.W. Post on Sunday afternoon at Pioneer Field. The Great
Danes won the opener, 4-2, and the second game, 1 7-2.
Checksfield broke a 2-2 tie when his single drove in shortstop Mike Grasso
(Bishop Maginn) who had reached on an error. Michael Tecklenburg added an
insurance run with a sacrifice fly. Junior left-hander Mike Burke threw a
complete-game by scattering eight hits.
In the nightcap, center fielder Michael Oliva totaled three hits and four RBI.
Oliva plated two runs with a single in the third, as Albany (6-15, NYSBC 2-2)
scored eight times in the inning. Grasso, a sophomore shortstop, also drove in
three runs. Freshman Adam Kroft (Shenendehowa) allowed one run on three

Albany, N.Y. — Jonathan Garrick and Alix Rodriques won the long jump and 100-
meter dash, respectively, plus were members of the winning 4x100-meter relay to lead
Albany to victory in a quadrangular meet with Williams, Holy Cross and Hartford on
Saturday afternoon at University Field. The Great Danes were second in the women’s
competition.
Garrick posted a mark of 21-feet, 11.75-inches in the long jump, while Rodriguez
sprinted 100 meters in 11.38 seconds. The Albany duo helped the 4x100 relay reach
the finish line in 43.23.
Other individual winners for the Great Danes were Marlon Monroe (triple jump),
Adam Rice (1,500), Josh Merlis (3,000 steeplechase), Charles Young (400 hurdles)
and Teiko Aryee (high jump).
In the women’s meet, Albany’s Seidah Abu-Bakir was a double winner in the
200-meter dash and high jump. Freshman Jessica Walton (Fonda-Fultonville) won the
1,500 in 4:46.92, while Jessica Burger (Granville Central) took the 400-dash in 59.63.
Walton and Burger also ran the second and fourth legs on the winning 4x400 relay.
Scotia-Glenville graduate Andrea Sweet (400 hurdles), Tammy Freeman (100),
Dinnah Decatus (800) and Nierria Jones (triple jump) also posted first-place finishes.
Williams was first in the women’s team standings, as Rita Forte and Diane Williams

WOMEN’S LACROSSE
Albany, N.Y. — Andrea Esposito (Saratoga Springs) and Dawn DiMicco each
had three goals, and Albany held off a late rally to post a 13-11 victory over
Vermont on Wednesday afternoon at Albany Field.
Albany (3-4) built a 9-1 halftime lead, as Esposito did all of her scoring in the
period and DiMicco added a pair of goals. The Great Danes held an eight-goal
advantage early in the final period, when Vermont (1-5) started its comeback
attempt.
Freshman midfielder Sarah Booker scored two of her three goals two
minutes and 23 seconds apart to pull her team within 12-10 with 10:20 remaining.
However, Erin Pemrick (Saratoga Springs) tallied one of her two goals off a free-
position opportunity moments later, and the Great Danes hung on to a two-goal
lead over the final seven minutes.
Vermont's Blair Griffin and Courtney Keefe each netted two goals, while
goalkeeper Kate McBride made 21 saves. Albany’s Maria Ferrucci also had two
goals.

BASEBALL
© Syracuse, N.Y. — Sophomore Mike Pecchia had four hits, including his first home
run of the season, and drove in five runs to lead Le Moyne to a non-conference
doubleheader sweep over Albany on Wednesday afternoon at Dick Rockwell
Field. The Dolphins won the twinbill, 8-O and 7-1.
In the opener, Le Moyne (9-7) took a 3-0 lead in the first inning, when first
baseman Sam Parkins belted a three-run homer. Pecchia, who also scored four
runs on the day, added another three-run blast in the fifth. Four pitchers
combined to shut out Albany (4-15) on two hits.
In the second game, the Dolphins leaped to a 5-0 lead in their first at-bat.
Freshman infielder Tom Warner homered, a three-run shot with two outs, to key
the inning. Starting pitcher Chris Marsh allowed three hits in four innings of work
to pick up his second victory.
Albany’s Mike Kuebler and Jake Toms each collected two hits in the
doubleheader.

BASEBALL
West Point, N.Y. — Shortstop Buddy Gengler had three hits and Army used a five-run
sixth inning to beat Albany, 8-5, on Tuesday afternoon at Doubleday Field.
Albany (4-13) tied the contest at three apiece in the fifth, wnen Mike Kuebler
homered and Mike Grasso (Bishop Maginn) delivered an RBI triple. Army (7-12-1)
rallied with five runs in the sixth. Brad Scioletti started the inning with a solo homer
over the left-field fence. Pinch-hitter Brandon Boyce later added a two-run double.
Third baseman Dominic Trippodo belted a two-run homer in the first inning for
the Black Knights, who won last year’s Patriot League title. Albany's Grasso, a
sophomore shortstop, finished with three hits and two RBI, while Steve Checksfield hit
his fourth home run of the year, a solo blast in the eighth.

SOFTBALL
New York, N.Y. — Shortstop Valerie Terry (South Glens Falls) had three hits, including a
solo home run, in the first game, as Albany split a doubleheader with Columbia on
Tuesday afternoon. The Great Danes won the opener, 5-3, but dropped the nightcap, 2-
1.
Terry led off the first game with her second homer of the season, and then singled
and scored in the third to hand Albany (9-12) a 3-0 lead. Columbia (9-11) closed the gap
to 3-2, when April Jarvis singled and came across on an error and Mary Ebner lined a
RBI single. The Great Danes pulled away, as Amy Hawk scored on a passed ball in the
fourth and Lynnette Bohannon hit a solo blast in the fifth.

In the second contest, the Lions snapped a four-game losing streak behind pitcher
Laura Grant, who struck out eight and scattered six hits en route to her second victory
of the season. Albany took a 1-0 lead in the first on Liz Wieboldt’s RBI double, before
Columbia plated two runs in the fifth. Jarvis drew her team even with a run-scoring
single, before Danielle Capece scored the winning run on a throwing error.

MEN’S LACROSSE
Schenectady, N.Y. — Garett Rosecrans and Chris Aitkin each scored twice in a five-
goal fourth quarter to lead Butler to an 11-7 victory over Albany on Tuesday afternoon at
Union's Frank Bailey Field.
Butler (4-4) held a 6-4 lead after three periods, but then reeled off four consecutive
goals to begin the final stanza. Rosecrans, who totaled four goals and two assists, hit
the net from the right side to start that run. Aitkin, a junior attackman, scored two of his
three goals in that stretch.
Albany (1-4) stayed close through three quarters by converting its extra-man
opportunities. Jim Lindsay rifled a shot inside the post with two minutes left in the third
period, as his team tallied four man-up goals on the day.
Brendan Winkler made 18 saves in the Butler cage, while Ryan Ward added two
goals and two assists. Junior midfielder Sal Massa led the Great Danes with three goals
and one assist.

TRACK & FIELD
West Point, N.Y. — University at Albany’s Cherice’ Vanderhall set a school record
in the women’s shot put to highlight her team’s performance at the West Point
Invitational. The non-scoring meet, held at Army’s Shea Stadium, featured
@ athletes from 45 schools.
Vanderhall finished fourth in the shot put, and broke her own school
standard with a mark of 41-feet, 0.50-inches. Sarah Best (Granville Central) tied
for sixth in pole vault, while Andrea Sweet took sixth in the long jump.
Rosemarie Samuels went 34-0 in the triple jump to place eighth. Stacey
Kupcheni (Shenendehowa) was ninth in the hammer throw with a toss of 118-11.
In the men’s competition, Jeffrey Brooks (Guilderland) and Robby
Harrison (Shaker) were third in the 5,000 meters and triple jump, respectively.
Brooks ran 15:15.24, and finished just ahead of teammate Joe Pienta (Ichabod
Crane). Harrison, a sophomore, leaped 44-03.50.
Teiko Aryee tied for fourth in the high jump (6-5). Dustin Wilson (23.07)
and Brandon Howlett (131-4.50) garnered a pair of eighth-place finishes in the
200-meter dash and discus.
WOMEN’S LACROSSE
Schenectady, N.Y. — Freshman attack Christine Anneberg had a career-high
four goals and one assist to power New Hampshire past Albany, 18-6, on Sunday
afternoon at Union College’s Frank Bailey Field.
New Hampshire (5-2) jumped out to a 7-0 lead in opening 10 minutes of
©} play, as Anneberg scored a pair of unassisted goals to begin the outburst.
Defender Sue Yund, who tallied three first-half goals, helped stake the Wildcats to
a 14-3 halftime cushion.
