MEN’S LACROSSE UPSETS #17 MASSACHUSETTS, 11-10, ON THE ROAD
Amherst, Mass.- Sophomore attack Chris Martocchia scored twice in the fourth quarter,
including the go-ahead goal with six minutes and 15 seconds remaining, as Albany upset 1 7th-
ranked Massachusetts, 11-10, on Tuesday afternoon at Garber Field.
Albany (2-2) rallied from a 9-7 deficit midway through the final period with four
consecutive goals. Luke Daquino, who had one goal and two assists, drove from behind the
cage to tie the contest at nine apiece with 7:59 left. Martocchia followed with the go-ahead goal,
when he fired a low shot from 12 yards away past goalkeeper Bill Schell.
Martocchia gave his team an 11-9 lead with 3:22 to play, as he netted his sixth goal of
the season by rifling a shot between the goalkeeper’s legs. Massachusetts (2-3) tried to rally in
the final two minutes. Sean Morris scored from the left side off a pass from Kevin Glenz with
© 1:25 remaining. Following an Albany penalty, the Minutemen had an opportunity to draw even.
But UMass was unable to convert a pair of shots on the extra-man advantage.
The Great Danes, who defeated a top-20 team for the first time in the program’s history,
trailed 5-3 at halftime, and by as much as three goals in the third quarter. Freshman Merrick
Thomson (Albany Academy), who led all scorers with five goals and one assist, scored twice in
the third period that closed the gap to 8-7.
“This has to be the program’s biggest win when you consider UMass has reached the
NCAA quarterfinals the last three years,” said Albany coach Scott Marr, whose goalkeeper
Kevin Rae made 17 saves, including five in the final quarter. “We didn’t make the same
turnovers in the second half that we did in the first. We played cleaner and capitalized on our
offensive opportunities.”
UMass’ Neil Lundberg had two goals and two assists, including an unassisted tally that
gave his team an 8-6 advantage after three periods. Gene and Matt Tundo each added two
goals and one assist. Albany’s Frank Resetarits and Martocchia each had a pair of goals to go
with one assist.
“| found myself with a short stick defender on me on both of my goals,” Martocchia said.
“When the slide didn’t come | was able to shoot low at the goalkeeper. Even though we were
behind we tried to stay positive in order to have a chance.”

with two seconds left before intermission.
The Great Danes, who were held to 25.9-percent shooting in the opening stanza,

@ and our seniors were a big part of those accomplishments.”

ALBANY SPORTS 2-2-2
Schrader finished with nine points and six rebounds for the Black Bears, who will
attempt to avenge last year’s 69-65 loss to Boston U. in the championship final.
Albany’s Danielle Hutcheson posted her 11th double-double of the season with 12

into the lead,” said Albany captain Sarah Sweetland, whose team established the most
single-season victories in the program's Division | history after not winning any
conference games two years ago. “We had some jitters in the first half and rushed
things. Our confidence peaked at the end of the season. We always had the talent, but
Coach Patterson brought it out of us.”

baseline shot and a foul-line jumper in that span. Becky Ayers canned another jumper off an in-
bounds play for a 36-27 lead with 15:05 remaining.
Hartford (18-12) would close the gap to two points on two occasions over the next eight
minutes. Freshman guard Ikea Witt, who had 11 points and seven rebounds, converted two
free throws to slice the deficit to 43-41 with 6:49 remaining.
The Great Danes, who were playing in their first postseason tournament game since
1999, regrouped with a pair of baskets. Maree Jones, who scored 10 points, used an inside
move to score in the lane, before Jen Schumacher made a driving layup.
The Hawks were able to make one more move at the lead. Liz Stitch, a 5-foot-9 junior
who had 14 points and a career-best 11 rebounds, buried one of her three 3-pointers to get her
team within 49-46 with 2:49 left. After Hartford came up empty twice on offense, Schumacher
and Jones each split two foul shots in the final 17 seconds to keep it a two-possession game.
Stitch nailed a meaningless three-pointer at the end that produced the final score.
“We played with a lot of character with (Danielle) Hutcheson in foul trouble and Ayers not
feeling well,” said Albany coach Trina Patterson, whose team held Hartford to 25.5-percent
shooting. “Sharon (Majors) and Lyndsay (Clark) gave us great minutes off the bench. Alicia
Learn stepped up her game, and we played with a sense of passion.”
Schumacher finished with eight points and four assists off the bench. Hutcheson, a first-
team all-conference center, fouled out with 4:56 remaining, and had just three points and four
rebounds. Ayers, who was averaging 13.0 points coming into the contest, played just 11
minutes due to flu-like symptoms.
“It feels great because we really wanted to win tonight and we played together as a
team, Learn said. “I really had to take my game to another level with our top scorers out of the
lineup.”

WOMEN - Boston U. 73, Albany 46
Boston, Mass. — Senior guard Katie Terhune had 22 points to lead three players in
double figures, as Boston University posted a 73-46 America East Conference victory
over Albany on Tuesday evening at Case Gymnasium.
Boston U. (16-10, AE 11-6) used a 13-3 run midway through the second half to
pull away for good. Terhune, who shot 8-of-14 from the field, and added six assists and
four steals, made two three-point field goals in that stretch. Becky Bonner, a 6-foot-2
junior who transferred from Stanford, hit another long-range jumper from the right wing to
give her team 51-33 lead with 8:28 remaining.
The Terriers, who employed full-court pressure and a trapping defense, got off a
quick start. Boston U. leaped to a 17-6 lead in the opening nine minutes. Bonner, who
had 13 points, hit consecutive layups during the outburst. Terhune converted two
baskets off steals, the second became a conventional three-point play when she was
fouled, and made a 15-foot jumper.
Albany (11-15, AE 8-9) trailed 29-19 at halftime. But the Great Danes, who are in
fifth place in the conference standings, were still within striking distance with 12:34 left
when Maree Jones was fouled as she scored in the lane. Jones’ free throw closed the
gap to 38-30. Terhune, the school’s all-time scorer with 1,915 points, ignited the
decisive run with a 3-pointer on her team’s next possession.
“We did not play with a lot of energy today,” said Albany coach Trina Patterson,
whose squad committed a season-high 30 turnovers after winning three of their last four
outings. “We weren’t very smart and had a lot of mental mistakes which resulted in
Sloppy play. We just want to take this loss and put it behind us.”
Danielle Hutcheson, a 6-foot-4 center, led the Great Danes with 14 points and 15
rebounds, her 10th double-double of the season. Alicia Learn added 10 points, five
rebounds, four assists and three steals.
“We played exceptionally well on the defensive end,” commented Boston U. coach
Margaret McKeon, whose team has won all seven meetings in this series. “We dida
great job of forcing turnovers, getting steals and turning it into offense.”
Adrienne Norris, a 6-foot-1 junior, had 15 points and eight rebounds for the
Terriers, who held the visitors to 38.6-percent shooting and totaled 17 steals. Boston U.
@ inched closer to Binghamton in the America East standings, and trails the second-place
Bearcats by one game in the loss column.
