UNIVERSITY AT ALBANY'S RICH TALLARICO SELECTED
BURGER KING SCHOLAR-ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

ALBANY, N.Y. -- University at Albany's Rich Tallarico, a senior offensive guard on the football team,
has been selected as the Division I] Burger King Scholar-Athlete of the Week, for the week ending
December 2, in recognition of his accomplishments both on the field and in the classroom.

Tallarico's selection was made by a blue-ribbon panel of experts from the National Football
Foundation and College Hall of Fame, Inc., and Burger King Corporation. The University will receive a
$25,000 grant, which will go to the general scholarship fund, from Burger King in Tallarico's name. Rich
will be recognized on ABC's December 2 college football telecasts at 12:00 (Army-Navy) and 7:30 p.m.
(Florida-Arkansas). The halftime segment, hosted by John Saunders, will also announce Nebraska's
Aaron Graham (Div. I-A), Western Kentucky's Brian Bixler (Div. I-AA) and St. Norbert's Jim Madden

(Div. Ill) as this week's other winners.

Tallarico, a 5'8", 255-pound lineman from Wantagh, N.Y., was a starter at both left and right
guard on an Albany offense which averaged 364 yards in total offense. A starter in 30 consecutive
games over the last three seasons, Tallarico helped Albany make the transition from Division Ill to
Division Il in 1995. Last year, the Great Danes had upstate New York's top-rated offensive unit, setting
18 individual and team records.

Off the playing field, Tallarico is a pre-med student in biology with a 3.93 cumulative grade point
average. He was recently voted to the GTE/CoSIDA Academic All-America District | Team for the
second straight year, and was a national second-team selection in 1994. A national finalist for an
NCAA post-graduate scholarship, Tallarico is a member of several honor societies, including Phi Beta
Kappa and Golden Key. A member of the Dean's List in all six semesters of his college career, he
serves as president of Pi Kappa Phi fraternity and works with Push America, an organization which aids
the disabled. Tallarico plans to continue his studies in medical school pending graduation in May.

"Rich Tallarico is an outstanding scholar-athlete who has made important contributions to the
University community, and will no doubt make even greater contributions to society when he completes

his medical education,” said Dr. Karen R. Hitchcock, the University's interim president. "We offer our
heartfelt thanks to Burger King for its contribution to college football and its commitment to higher
education."

Burger King Corporation -- which has committed a total of $25 million this season to college
football in an ambitious corporate marketing campaign -- has pledged $1.3 million of these funds to the
13-week scholar-athlete program representing all four football divisions of NCAA member institutions.

ALBANY ANNOUNCES EARLY COMMITMENTS BY THREE SCHOLASTIC ATHLETES
Women's Basketball Signs Two Players, while Men's CC/Track Inks Local Standout

ALBANY, N.Y. -- The University at Albany has received commitments from two women's
basketball players and one men's cross country/track athlete during the early signing period (Nov. 8-
15). Mary Harrison, a 6'0" swing player from Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y., and Melissa Schoonover, a
6'1" forward-center from Painted Post, N.Y., were awarded scholarships in basketball. Benjamin
Wright, of nearby Averill Park High School, will be a member of the Albany cross country/track & field
program in 1996-97.

Harrison was a Class C all-New York state and all-Long Island selection as a junior, when she
averaged 21.0 points, 15.0 rebounds, 5.5 blocks and 4.5 steals per game. She led Cold Spring Harbor
High School to the Long Island small schools championship, and set school records in scoring,
rebounding and blocks.

Schoonover averaged 9.7 points, 8.9 rebounds and 3.9 blocks as a junior for Corning-Painted
Post West High School, which won the 1995 Section IV, Class B championship and posted a 24-1
record. She was chosen second team all-area by the Corning Leader and second team all-Sullivan
Trail Conference. Schoonover played in the 1995 Empire State Games for the Western Region girls'
scholastic team.

“Harrison brings both size and a good work ethic to the swing position," Albany head coach Mari
Warner commented. "She has versatility in that she is excellent at both facing the basket and playing
in the post. Schoonover comes from a successful program which is a consistent force in the state
playoffs. We look for her to play center when she gets to the collegiate level."

Wright, who will run cross country and the 5,000- and 10,000-meter events during track season
at Albany, was ninth in the recent New York State cross country championships. A Colonial Council all-
star, he won the Section II, Class B title with a three-mile time of 15:37.83 at Saratoga Spa State Park.

Wright, who set four course records this fall, was 14th at the state meet as a junior, and became the
first freshman at Averill Park to qualify for state competition in 1992. Last spring, he finished 10th in the
one-mile run at the state track championships, and established school records in the 4x400 and
distance medley relays.

"We expect (Benjamin) Wright to play a significant role in the rebuilding of our distance
program,” said Roberto Vives, who is in his 11th season as Albany's head track & field coach. "He
@ should step right in as a competitor in cross country."
