CORTLAND STATE BASEBALL vs. ALBANY
April 10, 1994; Cortland, NY
Game 1: Cortland 11, Albany 2
Game 2: Cortland 8, Albany 1
Records after game: Cortland: 18-2 (ranked 5th nationally in Div. til
Albany: 3-6
The Cortland Red Dragon baseball team ran its winning streak to six games with a doublheader sweep
over the University at Albany Sunday afternoon in Cortland. The Red Dragons knocked off the Great |
Danes 11-2 In the opening game before claiming an 8-1 decision in the nightcap.
Cortland, winners in 16 of Its last 17 outings, broke through for eight runs in the first two innings off of
Albany starter and loser Bill Jarvela (Wappingers Falls/Roy C. Ketcham). The Red Dragons scored
four runs In each of the first two frames, slamming three homers during that stretch. After a leadoff
single by shortstop Mark Duncan (Massena/Norwood-Norfolk) in the first, junior centerfielder Steve
Strife (Utica/Utica Senior Academy) tagged a two-run home run over the right field fence to give
Cortland a 2-0 lead. The Red Dragons finished off the inning when sophomore designated hitter Steve
Will (Livingston Manor/Livingston Manor) hit a two-run blast over the fence in left-center.
Strife’s RBI single scored Cortland’s first run of the second inning, with another run coming home on an
error by Albany’s centerfielder. Two batters later, junior first baseman Brian LaLonde
(Lansing/Lansing) ripped a two-run homer to give the Red Dragons an 8-0 lead.
Slighty overshadowed by Cortiand’s early offensive outburst was the pitching of senior Brian Rose
(Potsdam/Norwood-Norfolk). Rose, who improved to 6-0 on the spring, took a no-hitter two outs into
the sixth inning before Albany's William Rosenzwieg (Congers/Clarkstown) singled sharply to left field.
The Great Danes did touch Rose for an unearned run in the second. Leo Garcia (North
Tarrytown/Sleepy Hollow) reached on an error by the third baseman to start the inning, then advanced
to third when Rose’s pickoff attempt sailed by the first baseman. Garcia then scored on a Rose wild
pitch. Matt Washburn (New City/Clarkstown-North) pitched the seventh for Cortland, allowing a one-
out solo homer to Albany's senior designated hitter David Sottile (Hyde Park/Lady of Lourdes).
Duncan, Strife and LaLonde all finished the game with two hits, as did junior outfielder Len Raucci
(Schenectady/Linton), who was 2-for-3 with a pair of singles. Freshman second baseman Doug
Premo (Rome/Rome Free Academy) singled in his final at-bat to extend his hitting streak to 12 games.
Premo, however, was held hitless in the second contest to snap the streak.
In the second game, Cortland jumped out to a 2-0 first inning lead off of Albany pitcher Roger Walters
(Aubum/Auburn). Duncan and Strife led off with singles, with rightfielder Heath Falzarano
(Hornell/Hornell) singling home Duncan for the game's first run. After a lineout by LaLonde, desiganted
hitter Alba Robinson (Mohawk/Ilion) singled to drive in Cortland’s second run.

CORTLAND BASEBALL vs. ALBANY
April 10, 1994
Albany threatened in the fourth but came up empty. Garcia led off the inning with a single and stole
second. After a Great Dane flyout, Sottle walked to put runners on first and second. Cortland escaped
‘any harm when catcher Greg Marro (Mariboro/Mariboro) strucx out and Garcia, running on the play,
was thrown out at third to end the inning.
Cortland put the game away in the bottom of the fourth with a six-run, five-hit frame. Singles by
Robinson and leftfielder Mark Loria (East Rochester/East Rochester) started the inning. Third
baseman Jason Rucker (East Rochester/East Rochester) reached safely when his sacrifice bunt
attempt was thrown away by Walters, allowing Robinson to score. Loria then scored on a Walters wild
pitch to give Cortland a 4-0 lead. Catcher John Sheible’s (Thornwood/Westlake) RBI single extended
the Red Dragon advantage to 5-0, then one out later Duncan doubled home Sheible to make It 6-0.
Three batters later, LaLonde wrapped up the scoring with a two-run triple to the base of the fence in
right-center field.
Albany averted the shutout with a run in the top of the sixth. Sophomore outfielder Dan Heslin
(Wantagh/Wantagh) started the inning with a single, his third hit of the game, then advanced to second
when first baseman Howle Rosenkrantz (Orangeburg/Pearl River) reached on a Cortland error. Two
batters later, sophomore second baseman Rich Apiscopa (Pond Ridge/John Jay) laced an RBI single
@ to right field to score Heslin.
Freshman pitcher Brian Dyring (North Hornell/Hornell) pitched five shutout innings to earn the victory,
his fourth against no defeats. Sophomore Andrew Bisagna (Pleasantville/Pleasantville) pitched the
sixth inning, allowing Albany's lone run, while sophomore Tom Neubert (Ithaca/Lansing) tossed a
hitless seventh inning, walking one.

JARVELA PITCHES ANOTHER GEM;
DANES WIN, 8-1
ALBANY, NY - The University at Albany Great Danes defeated the Williams
College Ephs, 8-1, behind sophomore Bill Jarvela's complete-game, rain-shortened
victory. Jarvela recorded his third complete-game of the season, improving his record to
2-2, and the Danes' record to 4-6. Williams falls to 5-8.
Albany scored in six of the seven frames played, bouncing back from a weekend in
which they dropped three out of four, including both halves of a double-header against the
fifth ranked team in the nation, Cortland, by scores of 11-2 and 8-1. "When the smoke
Clears and settles we're going to have a good team," said Albany head coach Ed Zaloom.
"I was glad to see Billy [Jarvela] coming back after losing to Cortland. I'm glad he's back
and confident." Jarvela (Wappinger's Falls/R.C. Ketchum), a transfer from Division I
Georgia, gave up eight runs in two innings to the Red Dragons on =— after throwing
a two-hitter and a five-hit shutout in his two previous starts.
After the scoring drought at Cortland, the Danes had all nine starters s reach base,
six players cross the plate, and four players drive in runs against Williams. Sophomore
Dan Heslin (Wantagh/Wantagh) got the game-winning RBI with a sacrifice fly in the
second, while senior Howie Rosencrantz (Orangeburg/Pearl River) provided the big blow
with a three-run homer to right-center field in the fourth, putting Albany up 6-0. Jarvela
held off Williams’ offense with five strikeouts, allowing no walks. The only run allowed
was unearned in the last inning before rain forced the game to end prematurely.
Albany's next contest will be a double-header at Binghamton on Saturday.

INNING GAME
SCHEDULED
GAME NOTES:
- Albany has won eight straight, and is 11-3 versus
ECAC opponents.
- Coaches quotes " I thought they played a complete
game," said Albany coach Ed Zalooom. "We made a
lot of key plays at the beginning of the game that
allowed us to get back in it. Westfield could have
broken the game open if not for those plays when
they were up 3-0."
