ALUMNI TURF FIELD

HOME OF UALBANY FIELD HOCKEY

Alumni Turf Field, the home for UAlbany field hockey, was completed in the fall of 2005.
Alumni Turf Field features a surface of Sportexe Hockey Turf Elite, a knitted nylon system
that is made up of soft fibers that allows for improved playability, player comfort and ease
of maintenance and dependability. The new home of UAlbany field hockey is adjacent to John
Fallon Field, which serves as the home of the UAlbany men's and women's lacrosse teams.
Both all-weather fields are located just south of Indian Quad on campus.

a Heap Coach

Phil Sykes enters his sixth season as head coach of the Univer-
sity at Albany field hockey program. Sykes quided the Great Danes
"E Melis their first-ever America East Conference Championship title and
NCAA Tournament berth last season. UAlbany pasted a 12-10 record
n 2008, going 4-lin conference play. Sykes earned the America East
coach ofthe year title after mentoring the league's midfielder of the

year in Michelle Simpson and defensive player ofthe year, Michele Polizais

duniar Nicole Savage alsa earned all-conference first team accolades, while senior Ashley
Carr was an all-conference second team defender. Senior goalkeeper Ashley Ross earned
her fourth straight all-conference honor, while freshman Christina Patrick represented the
Great Danes on the all-rankie squad.

Sykes led the Great Danes to thei best recard in Division | history in 2007, which included
a share ofthe America East Conference regular-season title. UAlbany. which was nationally
ranked for nine weeks and finished the season at #19, advanced to is irst-ever conference
championship game, falling to Boston University in the ttle match

The Great Danes recorded a 15-5 recard in two years ago, with a 4-1 mark in America
East play forthe second consecutive season. Sykes coached seven all-conference players,
including first-team members Ross and Simpson, both making their second straight irst-
team appearances. Kristen Halder and Savage earned second-team accolades, while Suzy
Clephane, Sam Daly and Anouk Vandenberg were named ta the all-raokie team. Simpson was
later named an NFHCA second-team All-American,

Ross, wha finished the season ranked sivth nationally with a 114 goals against average,
led a group of eight Great Danes named to the NFHCA Division | National Academic Team.

Sykes coached the 2006 America East offensive and defensive players of the year in
Simpson and Arlette Westdorp, respectively. Defender Jess Lindsay and Ross were also
named ta the all-conference first team, while midfielders Polizais and Teska Koch earned
second-team honors. Kach, Lindsay and Savage alsa earned spats on the all-raokie squad.

In just his second year with the Great Danes, Sykes led the team to its fist America
East Conference tournament appearance since joining the league in 2001. UAlbany had its
best-ever showing in the conference standings, earning the third seed forthe tournament
The Great Danes alsa finished with a 9-9 record in 2005, their best effort in Five years.

Four of Sykes' I2 starters earned all-conference honors in 2008. Farward Tina Bryson,
who finished her career in fourth place on UAlbanys al-time points and goals lst. earned
First-team accolades for the second straight year. Holder and Westdarp bath garnered
second-team honors, while Westdorp and Ross were also named tothe all-rookie team.

In conference play, Udlbany posted three wins forthe first time since jaining the America
East. On Ootober 22. the Great Danes toppled No. 8 Boston University 21, handing the Ter-
riers their first conference oss since Dctober 24, 2003. Sykes’ squad would go onto finish
the season with an RPI of 29.

In addition ta success onthe field, Sykes saw several his student-athletes achieve rec-
gnition off the field. Led by 2005 tri-captain Shelley Gebhardt, six Great Danes were named
tothe NFHCA National Academic Squad. including returnees Ross, Westdorp Letitia Mazzaferra
and Vanessa Walter. Gebhardt alsa was honored withthe Chancellar's Scholar-Athlete Award,
which recognizes academic excellence and outstanding athletic achievement

The success came on the heels ofa building year in 2004, when Sykes guided the Great
Danes toa 7-leverall record. UAlbany fnished 2-4 and tied for fourth place in the America
East standings and came within one victory of qualifying for the America East tournament.

Sykes coached Bryson to America East all-conference first-team accolades. Forward
Danielle Costella was voted to the second team while Danielle Conklin and Holder earned
all-raokie honors. Nine Great Danes were named ta the America East Academic Hanor Roll,
and Amber Wade, Cheryl Varga and Gebhardt were selected tothe NFHCA Natianal Academic
Squad

Prior to his arrival at UAlbany, Sykes stepped into aroleas interim head coach at Cornel
in 2003. Under his tutelage, midfielder Karleigh Burns received second-team All-ly League
recognition.

Sykes also served as the first assistant at Towson University. The Tigers showed dramatic
improvement during Sykes' tenure, winning [0 games during the 2002 season, The Tigers
secured victories against nationally-ranked Delaware and Hofstra.

Sykes has a vast amount of playing experience. At age I6, Sykes represented his country
ina United States vs. Canada Challenge in Calgary Alberta. That served as the beginning of
Sykes’ experience on the U.S. Juniar and Senior National Teams, which included playing in
the 1989 Junior World Cup in Ipoh, Malaysia,

Sykes competed at the [995 Pan American Games in Argentina, where the U.S. squad wan
a bronze medal. The highlight of Sykes’ playing career came in the 1996 Olympics, when he
played on the U.S. lympic team and was able ta represent the nation atthe highest level,

Annative of Livermore, Calf, Sykes retired from international competition to fnish his
college degree. He graduated with a bachelor's degree in kinesiology from Califarnia State
University, Hayward in 999

Sykes, who resides in Clifton Park with his wife Jen, alsa plays competitive tennis. He
played number one singles and daubles at Chabot Juniar College, earning a scholarship to
the University of Texas-Pan American, and began teaching tennis in California later earning

his USPTA certification,

Katie White

Assistant Coach

Katie White enters her third year with the UAlbany
coaching staff this season.

White came to UAlbany after spending a year as an as-
sistant at Colgate University, where she helped develop the Patriot
League's goalkeeper of the year and rookie of the year. White acted
as the recruitment coordinator for the field hockey program, while also organizing and
directing three tournaments.

A four-year letterwinner at New Hampshire, White was a two-time All-America East
Conference First Team and Regional All-America honoree, and was named the confer-
ence's rookie of the year in 2003. She finished her career with the Wildcats ranked third
in goals and fourth in points. White earned her bachelor's degree in psychology from
New Hampshire in 2006.

White, a native of Glens Falls, N.Y., has also served as the director and head coach
in the USFHA Futures Program in New York, and was an assistant coach for the Futures
Program in New Hampshire. She has coached field hockey camps at Boston College and
Northeastern University, and also gained experience as a coach at Mike Boyle Strength
and Conditioning in North Andover, Mass.

Andy Thornton

Assistant Coat

Andy Thornton begins his sixth season as an assistant
coach with the University at Albany field hockey program.
Thornton, who was named an assistant coach for the U.S.

Women’s Indoor Field Hockey squad last spring, has been coaching

field hockey in his native Scotland for several years. Thornton led
the U.S. Women's Team to a silver medal at the Pan American Games last November. The
team will compete for qualification to the World Cup in 2010. He was named the 2004
Scottish Coach of the Year for youth boys and took Grave Academy High School to their
first U-18 national field hockey title in March of 2004. Thornton was also the head coach
for the women’s field hockey team at Dundee University from 2002-04. In 2008 he was
named the Scottish Grass Roots Coach of the Year.

Asa player, Thornton was a member of the Menzieshill men’s field hockey club, which
competes at the tap indoor and outdoor level. Thornton has won eight national titles and
played in eight European Cups, representing Scotland. He has played in five European
“AY division and three “B" division cups, playing in the Czech Republic, Spain, Germany,
France and Russia, winning gold and silver medals. He has played on the Scottish outdoor
and indoor senior teams, including a match against reigning World and Dlympic Champion
Germany in March 2008. In December 2008, Thornton captained Scotland in a tri-nations
tournament against England and Australia. In 1999, Thornton's team won the European
Indoor gold medal in the Czech Republic. He also played on Scotland's U-I8, U-19 and U-21
international teams.

Thornton earned a bachelor's degree in sports coaching and development from the

University of Abertay in 2004.
Simpson, a two-time All-American, was named the America East
Conference Midfielder of the Year last season after scoring (0 goals
and recording (2 assists. Simpson, who was named Albany's Female Athlete of the Year
for 2008-09, finished her career ranked second all-time in career points (ID!) as well
as fourth in goals (37) and assists (27). She was a three-time all-conference first team
selection and was named the offensive player of the year in 2006.

Simpson became the first UAlbany player in the Division | era to earn All-America
status, garnering the accolade in 2007 and 2008. She was also a three-time NFHCA All-
Northeast Region selection and ECAC Division | All-Star. Simpson was invited to play in
the North-South Senior All-Star game last season after leading the Great Danes to the
program's first-ever America East Championship and NCAA Tournament berth

Athletic Success... EAST

‘America East enters its 2Ist year of all-sports championship competition on the heels of one of the most successful seasons in history
as five of its 10 team sport champions won at least one game in the NCAA Championship and two other teams received at-large tournament
bids. In addition, one student-athlete won a national championship and 20 others garnered All-America recognition.
Boston University advanced to the quarterfinal round of the NCAA Field Hockey Championship with a |-0 win over lowa in the first
round. The Terrier's Pam Spuehler was one of four finalists for the Honda Broderick Award, given to the nation's top player. She was joined by four others as NFHCA All-America selections.
Albany defeated Cleveland State, 3-0, in the NCAA Women's Volleyball Championship to become the first America East team to win a match in the tournament. Stony Brook's Jackie Ahlers,
a unanimous choice as America East Player of the Year, earned AVCA All-America accolades.

Academic Success...

‘America East institutions boasted a pair of Academic All-Americans in 2007-08 while another {9 were tabbed All-District selections. A total of 18 America East teams received Public
Recognition Awards by the NCAA under the Division | Academic Progress Rate (APR). The APR provides a real-time snapshot of a team’s academic success and the academic pragress of student-
athletes.

More than 2,250 of America East's 8,200 student-athletes were named to the Academic Honor Roll after receiving grade-point averages of 3.0 or better. Included in that total were 1,016
student-athletes who earned a 8.6 or better and were named to the Commissioner's Honor Roll

UAlbany has placed 42 players on the National Field Hockey
Coaches Association National Academic Squad since 1995, for a
total of 64 appearances. Players must have a grade point aver-
age of 8.20 or higher during the fall season, and be a starter
or key reserve in order to qualify. The 2006 UAlbany squad
earned the NFHCA National Team Award, received by teams that
maintained a 3.00 GPA or better.

Seven members of the 2008 squad were named to the
America East Academic Honor Roll (minimum 3.0 GPA), with
three qualifying for the Commissioner's Honor Roll (min. 3.6).

The latest rankings of graduate programs by U.S. News and
World Report place 10 programs in the nation’s top 30. The
School of Criminal Justice is ranked No. 2. Programs in
Rockefeller College of Public Affairs and Policy are ranked
\ in the nation’s top 10. The School of Social Welfare is
ranked 12th. The College of Nanoscale Science and
Engineering, located in the most advanced research com-
plex of its kind, is ranked first in the world by Small Times
magazine as the leading college for nanotechnology and
microtechnology.

Both the UAlbany campus and the region are bustling with
extracurricular opportunities, Students participate in more
than 150 student clubs, honor societies, and other campus-relat-
ed groups, and choose from a busy calendar of campus events,
including spirited Division | athletic competition in 19 sports and
a rich array of cultural activities.

Since its founding in 1844, the University has graduated genera-
tions of leaders in all fields. Today, more than two-thirds of under-
graduates go on for advanced degrees, and acceptances to law
and medical schools are above the national average.

UAlbany plays a major role in the economic development of the
Capital Region and New York State, particularly through its pro-
