Returning team champion Potsdam greets a new coach, Jim
Kelly. All-American swimmers lost through graduation are Dan
Wall, Steve Auburn and Tom Carvotta. This season’s strengths
are Mark Leger (free) and Mike Spencer (fly, free and IM).
Spencer was last season’s 100 fly champion and runner-up in the
200 fly. Kelly has hopes for freshmen Chris Root (IM), Mike
McCormick (free) and Jason Anderson (breast) but predicts a
third-place finish.
Geneseo’s Dune Hinckley has lost All-Americans Scott
Holzschuh and Kick Daggett, along with Neil Lynch, Steve
Maxwell, Dan Magruder, Paul Dewey, Rick Wylie and Brian
Tanner. With two All-Americans returning—Dave Pesch (free
distance) and Jim DeWitt (free sprints)—and the addition of
freshmen in key spots, Geneseo should be strong. John O’Brien
(free sprints) and Bill Wilson (breast) are recruits who will fill
the gaps left by Lynch and Maxwell. Freshmen recruits are Tom
Sanderson (IM), Joel Stenzil (diving) and Bill Adair (back).
Cortland was runner-up to Potsdam last year under Coach of
the Year Peter Cahill. Cortland’s strength is in the backstroke,
with Jeff Maxwell and new team member Doug Arthur giving a
ote two punch. Paul Cain and Kevin Markwardt will assume

Joe shore; and freestyle, with Mitch Cohen, Mike Dwyer, Bill
Stockwell and Dave Rubin. On the boards are freshmen Bill
Dyerkasch, Paul O'Brian and Dave Fasoli. Twelve freshmen are
out for the team. Mitch Rubin and Paul Marshman are the major
losses from last year’s 7-4 team. Backstroke is again the only
questionable weakness.
Fredoma’s Jim Wolfgang is happy with the enrollment of
three freshmen divers—Bob Furlong, Jay Perrone, and Steve
jenben—alter his team was not represented in that event last
year. Newcomers Bruce Peterson (free sprints) and Dave
McNeil (distance) add to the team depth. Major losses through
yraduation are John Owens (distance) and Jeff Lennox (fly). A
tough schedule will make it difficult to improve upon a winning
record,
ldave Robertson of Plattsburgh lost just one swimmer—Dan
Smith—thru graduation. Frank Collins (IM and fly), Blake Ford
‘free sprints) and Neil Wilson (back) are key returnees.
l'reshman Bob Moore (free) wiil be an asset but depth is needed.
Binghamton has veterans Steve Rofsky (free) and Charlie
Jacobs returning. Coach David Thomas is on sabbatical and Rick
Amira is serving as his replacement.
Another David Thomas is the new coach at Oswego. Major
loss is Peter Rosenkranz, who was a runner-up in the 200 fly in
division III. Coach Thomas feels that will be a building season
with freshmen Rob DeRocker (distance), Luke Hannon and Tom
Wileox in the IM. Don Dowd (breast) is returning.

Mark Spitz is probably the most famous competitor in
swimming history due to his electrifying dominance of his sport at
the 1972 Olympics. His seven Gold medals and seven world
records at Munich are regarded collectively as one of sport's most
astonishing performances of all time. Incredibly his record in
the 100 Butterfly stood until August 1977.
In all Spitz won nine Olympic gold medals «ind five
Pan American gold medals in his 13-year career that ended after
Munich. He broke or equalled 26 individual world records and
contributed to seven relay world records during his prime from 1967
thru 1972.
The Indiana University graduate
was named World Swimmer of the
Year in 1969, 1971 and 1972, and was
the Sullivan Award winner for 1971.
