ECAC DIVISION IT MEN'S AND WOMEN'S INDOOR TRACK & FIELD
CHAMPIONSHIPS HOSTED BY KUTZTOWN
CENTERVILLE, Mass. ---The 1997 Eastern College Athletic Conference Division I] Men's
and Women's Indoor Track & Field Championship will be hosted by Kutztown University Saturday
(March 1) and Sunday (March 2). The Pentathlon will be held in the Keystone Field House on the
Kutztown campus and the Championship will take place on the Lehigh University campus in the
Rauch Field House.
The Shippensburg University men's team and the Southern Connecticut State College
women's team retum to defend their titles. Other top five finishers from last year competing for the
men are University at Albany, Kutztown and Millersville University. For the women. Albany, East
Stroudsburg University, University of Massachusetts at Lowell and Kutztown strive to finish in the
top five again.
The women's pentathlon event, which consists of hurdles, high jump, shot put, long jump and
800, takes place at Kutztown Saturday at 6:00 p.m., while the Men’s Pentathlon (hurdles, long jump,
shot put, high jump and 1000) takes place at Kutztown at 6:15 p.m. The Championship begins on
Sunday at Lehigh with the track events beginning at 10:00 am and the field events Starung at 9:30)
am. In both the track and field events, the women are followed by the men.

ALBANY MEETS MASSACHUSETTS-LOWELL FOR NECC WOMEN'S CHAMPIONSHIP
WROW 590 AM Radio Will Air Saturday's Basketball Title Game
ALBANY, N.Y. -- The University at Albany will play for the New England Collegiate Conference
women's basketball championship and a berth in the NCAA Division II tournament field on
Saturday, March 1 at 7:00 p.m. The Great Danes travel to top-seed Massachusetts-Lowell for the
conference title game. The contest will air on WROW Radio (590 AM) and campus-station WCDB
(90.9 FM). Rodger Wyland and Charlie Voelker will handle WROW's broadcast from Costello
Gymasium, beginning with the pre-game at 6:45 p.m.
Albany (19-8), the tournament's No. 3 seed, upended No. 2 Franklin Pierce, 66-53, in the
semi-final round, and rallied for a 52-50 overtime decision against New Haven in the quarterfinals.
Massachusetts-Lowell (23-5) beat Bridgeport, 72-70, in its last game to reach the NECC
championship for the sixth consecutive year. The River Hawks have captured three conference
crowns in the 1990s.
Massachusetts-Lowell has won four of five meetings with Albany over the last two seasons.
The River Hawks took a /0-46 verdict at home on Feb. 12 to sweep the regular-season series,
and won the first encounter, 66-63, at UA's Recreation and Convocation Center on Dec. 4.
The Great Danes, who are making their first appearance in the NECC final, are led by a
pair of seniors in Michele Davis, a second-team all-conference selectlon, and Samantha
Ginsberg. Davis leads the team in scoring at 13.0 points per game, and is the school's all-time
leader with 117 three-point field goals. Ginsberg, a 5-foot-8 guard, averages 12.0 points and 4.6
assists. Kelly Paolino (Schalmont H.S.), who contributes 5.1 points and 2.9 assists per game,
scored 11 points against both New Haven and Franklin Pierce in conference tournament play.
Diane DiRoma, the '97 NECC Player of the Year, averages 12.6 points for the River
Hawks, and hit the game-winner on a driving 5-footer in the lane with 2.3 seconds left in the
semifinals against Bridgeport. Sheila Knower leads the team in scoring (13.2 ppg), while Debbie
Henderson, a 6-foot-2 center, adds 10.4 points and 9.9 rebounds per game.
Albany reached the NECC semifinals last year in its inaugural Division Il campaign, but was
eliminated by Massachusetts-Lowell, 75-43, in Bridgeport, Connecticut.

Albany's Duncan and Davis selected to NECC all-conference teams
Lowell, Mass. -- University at Albany's Andre Duncan and Michele Davis have
been chosen All-New England Collegiate Conference in men's and women's
basketball, respectively, for the 1996-97 season as voted by the conference's
head coaches. Both players were second-team all-NECC selections.
Duncan, a 6-foot-6 junior, led the Great Danes in scoring (14.3 ppg),
rebounding (6.4 pg) and blocked shots (1.3 pg). He scored in double figures on
20 occasions, including a career-high 27. Duncan is set to become the 19th
1,000-point scorer in school history early next season, and has 933 for his career.
Albany finished with a 17-10 record in its second Division Il season, and
rebounded from last year's 12-15 campaign.
Davis, a senior swing player, has been Albany's top scorer at 13.0 points
per game, and has averaged 4.7 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.9 steals. Davis, who
transferred from Herkimer County Community College, has 729 points in just two
seasons with the UA program, and is the all-time leader in three-point field goals
made with 117. She became the sixth Great Dane to score 30+ in a single game at
Franklin Pierce in January.
Davis will lead Albany (19-8) into Saturday's NECC women's championship
game at top-seed Massachusetts-Lowell. Tip-off is 7:00 p.m. The winner
receives an automatic berth in the NCAA Division Il tournament field.

Bud Light Daredevils Perform at Albany's Recreation and Convocation Center
Albany, N.Y. -- The Bud Light Daredevils, the world's most exhiliarating slam dunk act,
will perform at the University at Albany's Recreation and Convocation Center on
Thursday evening during a men's and women's basketball doubleheader against
Southern Connecticut State.
The Daredevils’ routine is packed with high-velocity trampoline dunks, breath-
taking flips, amazing acrobatics and comedy antics. This year's show will feature a
double mini-trampoline that will allow team members to execute the "Three-Point Slam"
from the top of the key. The Bud Light Daredevils have a 17-year touring history which
has entertained audiences at more than 385 colleges across the United States.
Albany Men Clinch No. 5 Seed for NECC Tournament
Albany, N.Y. -- Albany clinched the No. 5 seed for next week's New England Collegiate
Conference men's basketball tournament with Tuesday's 77-60 victory at Stony Brook.
The Great Danes will meet Massachusetts-Lowell, the fourth seed, in quarter-final
play on Monday, Feb. 24. Tip-off is 6:00 p.m. Albany's Recreation and Convocation
Center is the host site for the NECC tournament's men's and women's quarterfinals and
semifinals. Official pairings will be announced this Friday.
Albany is 17-8 overall (10-7 NECC) and plays its last regular-season contest
against Southern Connecticut State, the nation's No. 18 team in Division Il, on Thursday
at 7:30 p.m.
The Albany women can secure the No. 3 seed for the upcoming NECC tournament
with a victory over Southern Connecticut State. The Great Danes are 16-8 overall, and
11-6 in the conference.

Stony Brook, N.Y. -- Darrin Jahnel (Schalmont H.S.) scored 11 points and Kris Zeisler
came off the bench to add 10 as Albany routed Stony Brook 77-60 in a New England
Collegiate Conference contest at the USB Sports Complex.
Albany which has won six of its last seven starts improves to 17-8 overall and 10-
7 in the conference. Stony Brook falls to 10-14, and 6-11.
The Great Danes rolled to a 30-10 lead by hitting six of 12 three-point field goals.
Jahnel and Matthew Haggarty each scored eight points in that opening outburst.
The Seawolves, which trailed by as much as 26 in the second half, were led by
junior guard Larry Gibson who had 15 points and center Neil Edwards who scored 14.
Albany featured a balanced attack, and had five players with nine points each
including Todd Cetnar (Amsterdam H.S.) and Haggarty.

Albany 59, Stony Brook 54
Stony Brook, N.Y. -- Freshman Mary Harrison scored 15 of her 19 points in the second
half, and hit the go-ahead three-point field goal with 1:53 remaining in leading Albany to
a 59-54 NECC victory over Stony Brook at the USB Sports Complex on Tuesday
evening.
Stony Brook (9-16, NECC 5-12) built a 37-27 advantage early in the second half
behind the play of freshman guard Jackie Byrne, who led her team with 14 points.
Albany (16-8, 11-6) still trailed 51-44 with 9:24 left, but then scored seven straight
points. Megan Buchanan buried a three-point shot to draw her team even at 51 apiece.
The teams were still tied at 54-all when Harrison canned a three-pointer from just
right of the key. The 6-foot center, who played in high school on Long Island at Cold
Spring Harbor, than scored on the inside on her club's next possession.
Michele Davis had 19 points for the Great Danes, and reached double figures for
the first time since Jan. 22. Donna Fennessey had 11 points for the Seawolves, while
Amy DeMasi added 10.

Matthew Haggarty Earns NECC Rookie of the Week in Basketball
Lowell, Mass. -- University at Albany's Matthew Haggarty has been selected as the New
England Collegiate Conference Rookie of the Week (Feb. 9-15) in men's basketball.
Haggarty scored 11 points, and added three rebounds and two assists in 16
minutes off the bench in Saturday's 88-78 upset victory over Franklin Pierce. The 6'2"
freshman guard canned 4 of 7 field-goal attempts, including 3 of 4 from the three-point
arc.
Haggarty, who has scored in double figures three times this season, is averaging
9.1 points, 1.1 rebounds and 1.3 assists in 24 appearances. He is shooting 42.5 percent
(31 of 73) from 3-point range. Haggarty has helped Albany (16-8, NECC 9-7) win five of its
last six starts.
In addition, Tom McGoldrick was named to this week's ECAC Division II Honor
Roll. He had 18 points and seven rebounds against Franklin Pierce.
Roberto Vives Chosen NECC Track Coach of the Year
New Haven, Conn. -- Albany's Roberto Vives has been voted both the men's and women's
New England Collegiate Conference Indoor Track Coach of the Year. Vives guided the
Great Danes to the men's and women's titles at the NECC championships last Saturday.
Ellakisha Williamson (Albany H.S.) was named Female Athlete of the Meet at
NECCs. Williamson was a triple-winner in the 55-meter dash, 55-hurdles and 200.
Albany athletes captured Rookie of the Meet honors in both the men's and
women's championships. Freshman Benjamin Wright (Averill Park) earned the award by
winning the one-mile run (4:22.73), while Andrea Viger (Granville Central) was first in the
women's 5,000-event (19:22.43).

New Haven, Conn. -- Freshman Ellakisha Williamson (Albany H.S.) won three
events to lead Albany to a women's team title at the New England Collegiate
Conference Indoor Track Championships on Saturday afternoon at James W.
Moore Fieldhouse on the campus of Southern Connecticut State University. The
Great Danes also won the men's team championship.
Williamson captured the 55-meter hurdles in 7.10 seconds, the 55-meter
hurdles in 8.10 seconds and the 200-meter dash (25.21).
Tonya Dodge (Granville Central H.S.) and Xiomara Davila each were double
winners. Dodge cruised to victory in the 1-Mile Run in 5:14.44 and the 3,000 in
10:17.30, while Davila took the 400 (57.51) and the triple jump (36'03.75").
Other first-place finishers included Andrea Viger (Granville Central H.S.) in
the 5,000 (19:22.43) and Janna Johnston (Shenendehowa H.S.) in the long jump
(17'11.00").
The men's team were led by freshman Ben Wright (Averill Park H.S.) who

NEW HAVEN, Conn -- SUNY at Albany raced to a win at the NECC Men's Indoor Track Cham-
pionships Saturday, despite only having two first-place winners. Benjamin Wright won the one-mile
run in 4:22.73 and Jayson Vazsquez tookthe 55-meter hurdles in 7.74 for Albany. UMass Lowell
swept the three relays to place second for the meet.
Frank Biancamano won both the triple jump and the long jump to help Southern Connecticut to
a third place finish.

Massachusetts-Lowell 70, Albany 46
Lowell, Mass. -- Diane DiRoma scored 16 points to lead four players in
double figures, as Massachusetts-Lowell pulled away early in the second
half for a 70-46 victory over Albany in a New England Collegiate Conference
game at Costello Gymnasium.
Albany (14-8, NECC 9-6) has dropped four straight, and fell to fourth
place in the conference standings. Massachusetts-Lowell (18-5, 13-2),
which defeated the Great Danes, 66-63, in the first meeting this season, is
alone in first place.
Melissa Schoonover was fouled on a drive in the lane, and converted
the three-point play to give Albany a 31-26 advantage with 1:35 remaining in
the opening stanza. But DiRoma, who did all of her scoring before halftime,
buried a three-pointer to start a 7-0 run to end the period.
The River Hawks, which led 33-31 at the intermission, then reeled off
27 of the game's next 34 points to blow the contest wide open. Marsha
Blaylock scored all 11 of her points in that outburst, and connected on 3 of
4 three-point field goals.
UML's Jessica Bruce added 11 points and 11 rebounds, while Debbie
Henderson scored 10.
Freshman Mary Harrison's 12 points led the Great Danes, who shot
just 27 percent from the floor. -30-

Albany's Deborah Fiore Selected National Coach of the Year
Albany, N.Y. -- University at Albany's Deborah Fiore has been selected as
the 1996 Division II National Coach of the Year by the National Field Hockey
Coaches Association (NFHCA). She previously was voted the North
Region's top coaching award.
Fiore, a native of Oneida, N.Y., led Albany to a 14-3 record, and a No. 3
ranking in the final North Region poll. The Great Danes allowed nine goals
on defense and blanked 11 opponents in just its third intercollegiate varsity
season.
Fiore led Albany to an 11-3-1 record in her first year as head coach in
the fall of 1995. Prior to her present position, she guided Oneonta State to
two NCAA Division III tournament berths and the '91 ECAC championship.
Last summer, Fiore, who also serves as Albany's assistant women's
lacrosse coach, directed the Adirondack Region field hockey team to a
silver medal at the Empire State Games.

UNIVERSITY AT ALBANY HOSTS 1997 NECC BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT
Men's and Women's Pairings Will Be Announced on Friday, Feburary 21
ALBANY, N.Y. -- The New England Collegiate Conference men's and women's basketball
tournaments will be held at the University at Albany's Recreation and Convocation Center on
February 23-25. Albany will host the quarterfinals and semifinals, while the championship games
will move to the highest remaining seed's home arena on Saturday, March 1. Both the NECC
men's and women's champions receive automatic berths in the 48-team NCAA Division II
tournament field.
The NECC's eight-team tournament begins on Sunday, February 23 with four women's
quarterfinal games, while the men take the floor for their quarter-final round on Monday, February
24. All opening-round games will be played at 1:00 and 3:00 in the afternoon, and 6:00 and 8:00
in the evening.
Tuesday, February 25 is semi-final day for both the men and women. Sunday's women's
winners will play at 1:00 and 3:00 in the afternoon. Monday's men's winners are paired up in the
semifinals at 6:00 and 8:00. The finals for both tournaments are scheduled for Saturday, March 1
at the highest remaining seed's arena.
The NECC's regular schedule concludes on Thursday, February 20, so the pairings for the
men's and women's field will be announced the following day. Albany will play in the evening
session despite its seeding in the bracket. The Great Danes are scheduled for the 6:00 p.m.
contest in the men's and women's quarter-final round.
Several local high school standouts will be featured at the NECC tournament. Darrin
Jahnel (Schalmont) and Todd Cetnar (Amsterdam) are prominent in the Albany backcourt, while
Shenendehowa High graduates Ryan McDermott and Steve Treffiletti play at Stony Brook and
Keene State, respectively. In the women's field, Kelly Paolino (Schalmont) and Kerry Ochal
(Amsterdam) are regulars in the Albany lineup. New Haven's Becky Snow (Columbia) and New
Hampshire College's Chris Padula (Shenendehowa) are both starters, while Bridgeport's Lauren
O'Brien (Averill Park) and Stony Brook's Jill Henches (Shenendehowa) see time off the bench.

Hamilton, N.Y. -- Ellakisha Williamson (Albany H.S.) and Xiomara Davila each won two
events to lead Albany to a women's team title at Colgate's Class of '32 Invitational on
Saturday. The Great Danes also captured the men's team championship.
Davila won the triple jump and the 400-meters in 57.60 seconds which set a
school record and also provisionally qualified her for the NCAA Division II Indoor
Championships. Williamson, a freshman, won her titles in the 200-meters (26.20) and
the 55-meter hurdles (8.00).
Senior Tonya Dodge (Granville Central H.S.) also set a new school standard and
provisionally qualified for the NCAA's in the one-mile run (4:59.40). Janna Johnston
(Shenendehowa H.S.) took the long jump and Tara Bialy was first in the 55-meter (7.20).
Three local men led a group of five Albany athletes who won individual titles.
Rob Naughter (Guilderland) ran 1:56.50 to win the 800-meter run, while Jayson Vasquez
(Amsterdam) won the 55-meter hurdles (7.60) and Ben Wright (Averill Park) took the
one-mile run (4:18.33). Other winners included Jason Gurwitz (500) and Richard O'Riley
(triple jump).
The men's 4x400 relay team of Halim Wise, Courtney Currie, Corey Hudson and
Gurwitz ran 3:21.00 to finish first. And the quartet of Naughter, Marc Pflieger, Wright
and Doug Carl in the 4x800 relay won also (8:03.10).

ALBANY BASKETBALL COACH RICHARD "DOC" SAUERS
APPROACHES 700 CAREER VICTORIES
ALBANY, N.Y. -- University at Albany's Richard "Doc" Sauers is one victory from becoming the 10th
head coach in the history of college basketball to reach the 700-career win mark. Sauers, who is in his
41st season as the Albany mentor, has a 699-328 record. The Great Danes are home on Saturday,
February 8 at 7:00 p.m. against Bridgeport.
Sauers, at 66 years old, would stand alongside such legendary coaches as Kentucky's Adolph
Rupp, North Carolina's Dean Smith, DePaul's Ray Meyer and F.C. "Phog" Allen of Kansas. Rupp holds
the record for victories with 876 over a 41-year career.
Sauers, who is the fourth winningest active college head coach, became the 15th person to
coach his 1,000th game at the collegiate level in February 1996. He has suffered just one losing
season during his career. The Great Danes went 12-15 in their inaugural Division || campaign last year,
but have already clinched a winning record this season with a current 14-8 overall mark.
Sauers, who became Albany's coach in 1955 when the school was known as the New York
State College for Teachers, and Mount St. Mary's Jim Phelan are the only active coaches with 40 or
more seasons at the same school. Sauers' son, Stephen, played for his father in the late 1980s, and is
presently an assistant at Division | Marist College.

Albany, N.Y. -- University at Albany's Dennis King and three relay teams
have been invited to compete in Friday's Millrose Games at Madison Square
Garden in New York City.
King, a senior, will be one of seven runners in the college mile, and
the only Division II athlete in the field. He provisionally qualified for the
NCAA indoor championships with a time of 4:12.90 at the Greater Boston
Track Club Invitational in January.
Four local athletes wil compete on Albany relay teams. Ellakisha
Williamson (Albany H.S.) and Janna Johnston (Shenendehowa) are
members of the women's 1,600-meter relay. Ben Wright, a freshman from
Averill Park H.S., and Rob Naughter (Guilderland) will run on the men's
3,200-relay. The Great Danes are also entered in the men's 1,600-relay
event.

Manchester, N.H. -- Scott Smith recorded 19 points and 15 rebounds and Orlando
Ranson scored 16 to pace five players in double figures as New Hampshire College
rolled to an 84-61 New England Collegiate Conference victory over Albany on Tuesday
evening at NHC Fieldhouse.
New Hampshire College (18-2, NECC 11-1), the nation's ninth-ranked team in
Division Il, folded into a tie for first-place in the conference standings following
Southern Connecticut State's loss to Franklin Pierce. The Penmen jumped out to a 27-7
lead behind the play of Ranson, who had 12 first-half points, and never looked back.
Shawon Moncrief, who had 10 of his 15 points before the intermission, helped his club
cruise to a 41-20 halftime advantage. NHC shot 50% percent from the field in the period
on 16-of-32 shooting.
Albany (14-8, 7-7) was led by Darrin Jahnel (Schalmont H.S.) who had 14 points,
while Andre Duncan added 12.

Manchester, N.H. -- Senior forward Kristin Croteau scored 11 of her 14 points in the
second half, and hit the go-ahead basket with 34.6 seconds remaining to lift New
Hampshire College to a 62-59 victory over Albany in a New England Collegiate
Conference contest on Tuesday evening.
Albany (14-6, NECC 9-4) led 51-45 with 8:33 remaining, but the Penwomen
responded with nine unanswered points to go in front. Senior guard Jen Ryan, who had
14 points, buried a three-point field goal from the top of the arc for a 54-51 advantage.
Albany's Samantha Ginsberg hit a three-pointer on her team's next possession to
tie the score, and the game seesawed in the stretch. Katie Zeglis, who scored a
season-high 16 points, gave the Great Danes their last lead at 58-56 on a turnaround
shot on the baseline. After a Miki Hall free throw, Croteau scored on a follow shot in the
lane to give her team the lead at 59-58.
New Hampshire College improves to 6-13 overall, and 4-8 in the conference.
Croteau also added 10 rebounds.

Tom McGoldrick Selected NECC Player of the Week
Lowell, Mass. -- University at Albany's Tom McGoldrick has been chosen as the
New England Collegiate Conference Player of the Week (Jan. 27-Feb. 2) in men's
basketball.
McGoldrick, a junior, averaged 17.5 points, 4.5 rebounds and 3.0 assists
and shot 50 percent from the floot in a 2-0 week for the Great Danes. The 6-foot-5
forward has scored in double figures in nine of his last 10 starts.
McGoldrick is averaging 14.5 points and 5.9 rebounds, and ranks 10th in
the conference in field goal percentage (.509).
Albany (14-7, NECC 7-6) travels to nationally-ranked New Hampshire
College (17-2, 10-1) on Tuesday.
Mary Harrison Chosen as NECC Rookie of the Week
Lowell, Mass. -- University at Albany's Mary Harrison has been selected as the
New England Collegiate Conference Rookie of the Week (Jan. 27-Feb. 2) in
women's basketball for the second time this season.
Harrison, a 6-foot freshman, averaged 16.5 points and 7.5 rebounds in two
games last week. In addition, she made 57.1 percent of her field-goal attempts.
Harrison recorded her second double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds
against Stony Brook last Wednesday.
Harrison is averaging 9.2 points per game, and leads the Great Danes in
rebounding (6.6 pg).

Syracuse, N.Y. -- Ellakisha Williamson (Albany H.S.) and Xiomara Davila each claimed
individual titles at the Syracuse Invitational on Saturday afternoon at Manley Field
House.
Williamson captured the 55-meter hurdles by setting a new school standard in
7.97 seconds while automatically qualifiyng for the NCAA Division II Indoor
Championships. Davila came in second place (8.13) which also qualified her for the
NCAA's.
In the 55-meter dash Davila claimed victory in 7.19 seconds followed by
Williamson (7.25). Both times provisionally qualified them for the NCAA's.
Senior Tonya Dodge (Granville Central H.S.) won her heat in the 800-meters
(2:17.71) and set a school record which provisionally qualified her for the NCAA
Championships in March.

Albany 78, Sacred Heart 72
Fairfield, Conn. -- Freshman guard Todd Cetnar (Amsterdam H.S.) scored 18 points
while Tom McGoldrick added 17 in leading Albany to a 78-72 New England Collegiate
Conference victory over Sacred Heart University on Saturday afternoon at SHU
Gymnasium.
With the score tied at 60 apiece, Cetnar, who had 13 first half points, was fouled
while making a three-point shot from the top of the arc. The 6-foot guard buried the
subsequent free throw for a four-point play and a 64-60 lead with 4:54 remaining.
Another free throw by Cetnar gave Albany (14-7, NECC 7-6) a 67-60 advantage two
minutes l/ater.
Sacred Heart (7-12, 5-6) staged a late rally and closed within 74-72 on a three-
point field goal by Rod Toppin. Darrin Jahnel (Schalmont H.S.) made four free throws in
the final 19 seconds to seal the verdict.
"In the second half we got the ball inside to (Andre) Duncan, and that's what we
wanted to do," said Albany coach Richard Sauers, who earned his 699th career victory
with the decision. "Cetnar had a great first half, and while he showed inexperience at
times he hit some big shots."

Joseph Doyle led all scorers with 26 points for Sacred Heart, while Louis Frye and
Bryon Chong each scored 12. Duncan was the third Great Dane in double figures with
14 points and also added nine rebounds.
"That was a good spurt for us," said Cetnar, referring to his team's decisive run
in the second half. "| had a good shooting night, but when | don't | know | still have to
play solid defense."
Albany had lost its previous three meetings with Sacred Heart and like this one,
came down to the wire. Albany had lost 83-77 earlier this season at home, and 2 two-
point decisions last year.
Women's Basketball
Sacred Heart 73, Albany 68
Fairfield, Conn. -- Maureen Delaney hit the go ahead free throw with 43 seconds
remaining in leading Sacred Heart University to a 73-68 NECC victory over Albany on
Saturday afternoon.
Albany (14-5, NECC 9-3) scored 12 unanswered points to take a 57-50 lead with
8:36 remaining behind the play of Samantha Ginsberg, who had 17 points. Sacred Heart
(10-9, 6-5) rallied to go in front 62-61 four minutes later, when Heather Yablonski, who
had 15 points, converted a three-point play when she was fouled on a shot on an inside
basket.
The contest see-sawed in the stretch, before the Great Danes took their last lead
at 68-67 on a turnaround shot in the lane by Kerry Ochal (Amsterdam H.S.)
Delaney, who had all nine of her points in the final period, was than fouled on a
three-point attempt, and made two of three free throws to put the Pioneers ahead.
Delaney and Jessica Bresnahan each canned two foul shots in the final 18 seconds to
secure the win.
Chrissie Perkins led Sacred Heart with 14 of her 18 points in the first half, while
Bresnahan added 11. Freshman Mary Harrison had 15 points for the Great Danes.
