Bethlehem, Pa. -- Liz Peck and Jen Cordes, members of the University at Albany
women's field hockey team, have been selected to the GTE District | College Division
Women's Fall/Winter At-Large Academic All-America Team.
Peck, a first-team Division II All-America midfielder, is currently enrolled in Albany's
molecular biology doctoral program. She earned her B.S. in biology last spring, and had
undergraduate 3.68 grade point average. Peck captained the Great Danes to a school-
record 17-2 campaign and the 1997 ECAC Division Il championship.
Cordes, a sophomore forward, boasts a 3.96 GPA in the pre-law program, and has a
major in sociology with a minor in history.
Both athletes move on to the national ballot, and that team will be announced on April
23.

Albany, N.Y. -- Rafaela Nikas equaled a career-best five goals, including her 19th of the
season, as Albany upended American International, 19-5, on Monday at Varsity Field.
The Great Danes, who rebounded from a last-second one-goal loss two days ago, held
a 4-2 advantage late in the first half, but then reeled off nine straight over the next 15
minutes of play.
Nikas, a senior midfielder, netted a pair of unassisted goals prior to halftime, before
teammate Karen Karpus scored twice in a seven-goal barrage to begin the final period.
Freshman Marguerite Lanuax added two goals and two assists, while goalkeeper
Terri Crispo made seven saves in her first start of the year for Albany (3-2).
Jackie Fabi and Jennifer Bissonnette each had two goals for American International
(0-1), and sophomore Mary Jo Lavoie turned aside 18 shots in the Yellow Jacket cage.

Rindge, N.H. -- Freshman Mike Kuebler has been selected as the New England Collegiate
Conference Rookie of the Week in baseball (Mar. 23-29). Kuebler, a third baseman from
Northport, N.Y., batted .600 (6-10) in four games with a 1.200 slugging percentage, three
doubles, one home run, two runs and five RBIs. He is hitting .455 on the season, and
homered and doubled in Saturday's conference doubleheader sweep at Bridgeport.
Albany is 4-5 overall, and 2-0 in NECC play.

Rindge, N.H. -- Kelly Poynton, a junior right-hander, has been chosen as the New
England Collegiate Conference Pitcher of the Week in softball (Mar. 23-29). Poynton fired
two complete-game shutouts, a three-hitter vs. Bridgeport and a five-hit blanking against
New York Tech. Poynton, of Orchard Park, N.Y., recorded 21 strikeouts in her two starts,
and fanned a career-high 15 at Bridgeport. She has a 5-1 record on the season with a
0.70 earned run average. Albany is 10-3, and 2-0 in the conference.

Teaneck, N.J. -- Paul Esposito and Steve Serafin each belted two-run homers in the
opener to lead Fairleigh Dickinson to a doubleheader sweep over Albany on Sunday
afternoon. The Knights won the first game, 8-3, and the second contest, 6-0.
Esposito's two-run shot highlighted a second inning in which Division | Fairleigh
Dickinson scored four times to erase a 2-0 deficit. Sean McLaughlin, a sophomore
outfielder, doubled and tripled for the Knights, who improved to 4-8 overall. Catcher
Dennis Cirilla went 2-for-3 with a double and one run scored for Albany (4-5). The Great
Danes had opened their New England Collegiate Conference schedule with a pair of
victories, 14-0 and 12-2, at Bridgeport on Saturday.
In the nightcap, FDU pitchers George Hinchcliff and Diego Granandos combined on a
three-hit shutout. Jeff Karpell and Robert DeFabbia had back-to-back doubles in a four-
run first inning.

© Albany, N.Y. -- Kelly Poynton tossed a five-hit shutout in the first game, as Albany split a
non-conference doubleheader with New York Tech in the Great Danes' home opener at
Albany Field. Albany won the first contest, 2-0, before the Lady Bears came back to take
the nightcap, 5-2.
Poynton, a junior right-hander, upped her record to 5-1 with her third shutout of the
season. She recorded six strikeouts and four walks, while lowering her earned run
average to 0.70 overall.
Amy McGroty (Schalmont H.S.), who went 4-for-5 at the plate with three doubles and
three RBIs in the twinbill, lined a two-run double into the left-field gap in the fourth inning.
In the second contest, centerfielder Rachel Gunther had three hits and scored twice,
while Kari Berman went 3-for-4 to lead New York Tech (10-11). Gunther put her club
ahead for good at 2-1, when she singled and scored to lead off the third.
Albany (10-3) had won 10 straight previous to the second-game loss.

and Keith Willa (Shenendehowa) added three goals and three assists to power Albany
past New Hampshire College, 17-4, on Saturday in the Penmen's season opener.
Albany (2-1) jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the first quarter behind Willa, a junior
attackman who transferred from Division | Hobart College. New Hampshire College (0-1)
pulled to within, 8-4, with 3:32 to play in third following a goal by Butch Howie.
McCarthy, a senior, answered with an extra-man goal two minutes later, before the
Great Danes opened up a 14-4 advantage early in the final period on back-to-back goals
from Tets Wakino.
Sean McConaghy (Columbia H.S.) added two goals and one assist, while three
Albany goalkeepers combined on seven saves. Sophomore Chris Devoe turned aside 17
shots for the Penmen.

Albany, N.Y. -- Cheri Drysdale hit the lower left corner on a fastbreak feed from Kristen
Pickersgill with 22 seconds remaining to lift unbeaten Lock Haven to an 8-7 victory over
Albany in the Great Danes' home opener at Varsity Field.
Albany (2-2) trailed 7-5 with less than eight minutes to play, but rallied to tie the
contest on a pair of unassisted goals by Marguerite Lanaux and Rafaela Nikas. Nikas, a
senior midfielder, scored her third goal of the game when she bounced a shot past
goalkeeper Cindy Brownell with 5:51 left to draw her team even.
Lock Haven (4-0) leaped to a 3-1 advantage in the opening 19 minutes, behind the
play of Pickersgill, who had four goals, including her 20th of the season, and three
assists on the day. The Great Danes closed within 6-6 midway through the second half
on Lanaux's free-position shot. Kristen Geissler regained the Lady Eagles’ two-goal
cushion, when she was set up on the top of the crease by Pickersgill.
Lock Haven's Brownell made 14 saves, while Allisson Pennington and Kim Martini
combined to stop seven shots for Albany.

two games with one triple, three RBIs, four runs scored and three stolen bases. Catcher
Lisa deSousa had three doubles and drove in a pair of runs on the afternoon.

Syracuse, N.Y. -- Freshman Katrina Hable scored four goals, all in the first half,
and Kristen Langenmayr added three goals and three assists as Syracuse rolled
to a 23-4 victory over Albany at the Carrier Dome on Thursday evening.
Syracuse (3-2) leaped to a 4-0 lead in the opening seven minutes, and never
looked back. Hable's fourth goal in the first half came off a pass from Kristen
Bolster with 19 seconds left, and handed the Orangewomen a commanding 12-2
advantage at the intermission.
Rafaela Nikas had two goals, including her 11th of the season, for Albany (2-
1), which won its opening two contests in South Carolina last weekend.

San Juan, Puerto Rico -- Greg Miller (Albany H.S.) and Jayson Vazquez
(Amsterdam H.S.) led the University at Albany to a first-place finish in the
men's 4x100 relay at the LAI National Relays. The Great Danes sprinted
41.88 seconds over the Sixto Escobar Stadium surface.
Miller, a freshman, and Vazquez, a junior, ran the first and third legs on
a unit whose clocking was nearly five-tenths off the school record (41.39)
set in 1995, and the fastest time ever posted in the month of March. Halim
Wise anchored the relay, while Steven Kantrowitz was second in the order.

Gaffney, S.C. -- Iggy Levelev and John Bookhamer each scored four goals to lead
Limestone past visiting Albany, 13-6, on Saturday afternoon.
The Saints, who improved to 4-2 overall, took a 3-0 lead into the second quarter,
before Albany (1-1) responded with four consecutive goals. Mike McCarthy
(Shenendehowa H.S.) netted one of his team-high three goals to draw his club even,
before Dan Small gave his club a 4-3 advantage on a pass from Trevor Lisky.
Limestone regained the lead at 5-4 with 3:58 left before halftime on Chris Campbells'
goal. The Saints pulled away with a four-goal third quarter, as Levelev scored twice in
the period.
Gary Lockwood had 13 saves for the Great Danes, which opened the season two
days ago with an 11-3 victory over Merrimack on this same field. Keith Mursch turned
aside 13 shots for Limestone.

Senior attacker Rebecca Kaiser (Guilderland H.S.) added two goals and one assist,
while Albany goalkeepers Allisson Pennington and Kim Martini combined to make 15
saves. Laurie Hogan led the Lancers with four goals, and Rachel Bunn turned side 22
shots in the Longwood cage. Albany (2-0) is ranked eighth nationally in this week's

season, as Albany swept a non-conference doubleheader from Concordia (N.Y.) College
at the Flordia Coast Spring Training Camp on Saturday. Albany (7-2) won the second
game, 6-1, and the first, 8-7.
Poynton, a junior right-hander, allowed just a fifth-inning single and an unearned run
in the sixth in improving to 3-1 overall. Erin Craig and Kara Faraone belted back-to-back
triples to start a four-run fourth frame. Kate Carnevale (Columbia) had three hits, while
Amy McGroty (Schalmont) was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and one RBI.
In the opener, Anne Bink (Colonie Central) lined a two-run double to key a third inning
in which the Great Danes scored five times. Concordia (0-2) closed within 8-7 in the sixth
on Jane Weis' RBI single. Albany reliever Jessica Hansen preserved the UA vicory by
forcing a groundout with the tying run aboard in the seventh.

Robilotti and Jeff Rossiter, who was 2-for-3 at the plate, sparked Albany's come-from-
behind triumph. Freshman hurler David Schrepper picked up the victory in relief.
Tufts pitcher Brian Symmons gained the decision on the mound, and helped himself
at the plate by scoring twice and driving in two runs. Albany had closed within 4-3 after
Tony Gregoli (LaSalle Institute) hit a solo homer in the fourth and Heath Mullen

Virginia Beach, Va. -- Norm Sweet's two-run single in the sixth inning proved to be the
game-winner as Massachusetts College rallied for a 6-4 non-conference victory over
Albany on Friday at Cox High School Field.
Albany (1-1) tied the contest at three apiece in the second, when Michael Oliva drove
in two with a base-hit and Rob Ryan (Shenendehowa) added an RBI single. Tony Gregoli
(LaSalle Institute) gave the Great Danes a 4-3 lead in third with a sacrifice fly.
Massachusetts College (2-4) regrouped with a three-run sixth to go back in front.
Chip Manuel and Jose Toledano each had two hits and one RBI to pace the Mohawk
attack.

San Juan, P.R. -- Luis Soto and Samantha Cohen posted school records in the men's
long jump and women's 3,000-meter racewalk to highlight Albany's performance at the
Carolina Invitational. Nine athletes won individual titles, while three Great Dane relay
teams were first across the line at Municipal Stadium.

(track-cont.) Soto leaped 24-feet, 2-inches to break a mark previously held by Anthony
Davenport, who went 23-11.75 in 1995. Cohen shattered her own racewalk record by
nearly 14 seconds, and covered the course in 14:09.64.
Halim Wise won the 400-dash in 48.54, and anchored the winning 4x100 and 4x400
relays. Xiomara Davila Diaz was a triple-winner in the 100-hurdles (14.34), 400-hurdles
(1:03.14) and triple jump (35-7), and ran the third leg on first-place women's 4x100 relay.
Janna Johnston (Shenendehowa) took first in both the long jump and high jump.
Her mark of 18-6.5 in the long jump was just 2.5 inches off the late Kimberly Toone's
school standard. Other Albany winners include AndregViger (Granville Central) in the
3,000, Jayson Vazquez (Amsterdam) in the 400-hurdles, Ronald Edmundson in the triple
jump, and Brendan Howell in the men's 3,000.

Fort Pierce, Fla. -- Junior infielder Nancy Nicsevic (Columbia H.S.) doubled and tripled,
and scored a pair of runs to lead Albany to a 3-1 victory over Missouri Baptist College on
Friday at the Florida Coast Spring Training Camp.
Albany pitcher Kelly Poynton allowed just two hits on the mound, while striking out
10 and walking five in improving her record to 2-1.
Nicsevic led off the third with a double, and later scored on a passed ball to give the
Great Danes a 2-1 lead. Amy McGroty (Schalmont) drove in an insurance run with a two-
out single in the fifth. Albany (5-2) plays a doubleheader against Concordia (N.Y.) on
Saturday.

Gaffney, S.C. -- Dawn DiMicco and Rafaela Nikas each scored four goals to power Albany
past Limestone College, 11-7, in the Great Danes' season-opener. Both teams are
ranked in this week's Brine/IWLCA Division II national poll.
Limestone (2-3) leaped to a 3-1 lead in the opening eleven minutes, as senior attacker
Tricia Davidson tallied three of her game-high five goals in that outburst. Albany, an 8-4
club in 1997, rallied to take a 5-4 halftime advantage on an unassisted goal by DiMicco
with 4:15 left in the period.
The Great Danes extended their margin to 7-4 early in the second half. DiMicco, a
first-team All-America selection as a freshman, rifled a shot in the upper corner, before
Jess Spadafora connected on feed from Laura Walls.
Nikas, a senior midfielder, scored three times in the final eight minutes to hold
Albany's lead in the stretch, while goalkeeper Allisson Pennington had 15 saves. Cindy
Watkins stopped 16 shots for Limestone.

Gaffney, S.C. -- Sophomore attackman Dan Small scored three times, and John
Baumann added two goals and two assists to lead Albany to an 11-3 season-
opening victory over Merrimack on Thursday afternoon at Limestone College.
Carl Gravano, who had two goals and one assist, and Baumann each found
the net twice in the first half to stake Albany to a 4-1 halftime advantage.
Senior Mike McCarthy (Shenendehowa H.S.), a preseason honorable mention
All-America attackman, and Small each added a pair of goals in the third quarter
when the Great Danes broke the contest wide open.
Gary Lockwood had 17 saves for Albany, which was ranked eighth in the
preseason Division Il national coaches poll.
Ryan Polley, a junior midfielder, had one goal and one assist for Merrimack
(1-1). Freshman Gary Ford turned aside 20 shots in the Warrior cage.

Waco, Texas -- University at Albany's Bob Ford has been elected third vice-
president of the American Football Coaches Association. Ford, the 1997 GTE
Region | and Eastern Football Conference Coach of the Year, has a 157-121-1
record in 29 years as a varsity coach.
The 1998 AFCA officers include president Roy Kidd of Eastern Kentucky
University, first vice-president Rocky Rees of Shippensburg University and
second vice-president Bobby Bowden of Florida State University.
Ford has 148 career victories in 25 seasons as Albany's head coach, and led
the Great Danes to an EFC championship last fall.

Virginia Beach, Va. -- Senior outfielder Heath Mullen (Greenwich Central H.S.)
doubled twice and drove in two runs to lead Albany past Endicott College, 11-4,
in the Great Danes' season opener on Wednesday afternoon at Virginia Wesleyan
College.
Mullen lined a two-run double into the left field gap to highlight a third inning
in which Albany plated seven runners. Steve Checksfield and Michael Oliva each
belted triples in the frame. Freshman Mike Negron went 2-for-4 at the plate in his
Club's 12-hit attack.

seventh to send the second contest to extra innings. Carnevale, a senior infielder
who had two hits with three runs scored, broke the 6-6 tie with an RBI single.
Lisa deSousa, a freshman catcher, drove in her second run of the game with a
groundout, before Craig delivered another run with a single.
In the opener, Cari Crockett hit a two-run homer in the fourth, and deSousa
added a solo blast in the third. Nancy Nicsevic (Columbia) collected two hits with
one run scored.

Louisville, Ky. -- University at Albany's Andre Duncan has been named to the
1997-98 Daktronics NCAA Division Il All-America Team in men's basketball.
Duncan, a 6-foot-6 forward, was voted to the third team by the nation's sports
information directors.
He is the fourth Albany player to earn All-America honors in the basketball
program's history. Dick Crossett (1964-65), Rich Margison (1968-69) and Jason
Graber (1993-94) were honorable-mention selections at the College Division and
Division Ill levels.
“All-America recognition is a tremendous accomplishment for Andre," said
Albany coach Scott Hicks, whose team posted a 19-8 record in his first season.
“He was recruited as a Division Ill player and became the MVP in a full-
scholarship Division Il conference. Good things happen to those who work
hard."
Duncan, a senior from Monticello, N.Y., was picked in February as the New
England Collegiate Conference Player of the Year, and led the conference in
scoring (19.3 ppg), rebounding (8.6 pg) and blocked shots (2.1 pg). Earlier this
month, Duncan was chosen first-team All-Northeast Region, All-ECAC-North, and
to the NABC All-District squad.
He ended his career ranked fifth among the Great Danes' all-time scorers with
1,453 points, and finished first in blocked shots (184) and ninth in rebounding
(696).

Fort Pierce, Fla. -- Albany pitchers Kara Faraone and Kelly Poynton picked up
their first victories of the season as the Great Danes blanked Husson College, 1-0
and 8-0, in a non-conference doubleheader on Tuesday at the Florida Coast
Spring Training Camp.
Faraone, a sophomore hurler, allowed three singles, while striking out four
and walking six through five innings in the opener. Reliever Jessica Hansen
earned a save with two no-hit innings. Nancy Nicsevic (Columbia H.S.) doubled
and scored in third, and came home on catcher Lisa deSousa's two-out double
over the left fielder's head.
In the second contest, Poynton fired a three-hitter to even her record at 1-1 on
the season. The right-hander recorded six strikeouts and three walks. deSousa,
who went 3-for-4 with three RBIs, slugged a two-run homer in the fourth. Anne
Bink (Colonie Central H.S.) added two hits and one RBI.
Albany (2-2) faces Knox College in a twinbill on Wednesday, while Husson, an
NAIA school in Maine, falls to 2-4.

University at Albany's Tom Alexander (Guilderland H.S.) has been chosen to
the College Lacrosse USA Division Il preseason All-America first-team as a
defenseman. The 6-foot-2, 220-pound senior led an Albany defense which
allowed 9.31 goals per game last season. He earned second-team USILA All-
America honors, and was a Capital District College Lacrosse League All-Star.
Mike McCarthy (Shenendehowa) and Gary Lockwood were preseason
honorable mention selections. McCarthy, a senior attackman, led the Great
Danes in scoring with 34 goals and eight assists, while Lockwood ranked fifth
among the nation's top goalkeepers in goals against average (9.90).
Albany was ranked eighth in the preseason Division II national poll by Face-Off
Magazine, and opens its schedule on Thursday (Mar. 19) against Merrimack in
Gaffney, South Carolina.
(Women's Lacrosse)
Sophomore Dawn DiMicco has been named to the College Lacrosse USA
preseason women's Division Il All-America squad. DiMicco, who was a 1997
Brine/IWLCA first-team All-American, set the school's single-season freshman
scoring record last year with 32 goals and four assists.
Albany is rated ninth in the preseason Division II IWLCA national poll, and
begins its schedule on Friday (Mar. 20) at Limestone College in South Carolina.
The Lady Saints are ranked seventh nationally.

St. Peter's to a non-conference doubleheader sweep over Albany on Sunday at
the Florida Coast Spring Training Camp. The Peahens won the first game, 8-0,
and the nightcap, 8-5.
Hanrahan allowed three singles, while striking out five and walking three. St.
Peter's (13-2) got off to a 2-0 lead in the first inning on back-to-back doubles by
Tina Johnson and Maria Anderson.
In the second contest, Albany's Nancy Nicesvic (Columbia H.S.), who tripled
and singled, and scored twice, and Kate Carnevale (Columbia), who went 2-for-4
with two RBIs, helped their team close within 6-5 after six innings. However, St.
Peter's, a 32-win club last season, padded its lead with RBI singles by Jane
Stievers and Carrie Jones in the seventh.
The Great Danes, who were opening their 1998 schedule, meet Husson
College in a twinbill on Tuesday.

University at Albany's Halim Wise finished seventh in the 400-meter
dash at the 77th IC4A Indoor Track & Field Championships at Cornell
University's Barton Hall. The Great Danes were represented by six
athletes and two relays in a meet which annually gathers the East's top
Division | competitors.
Wise, a senior from Mt. Vernon, N.Y., broke his own school record
with a time of 48.68 seconds. He had set the previous UA standard at
the Syracuse Invitational in early February.
Luis Soto, a two-event winner at this year's New England Collegiate
Conference championships, placed ninth in the long jump with a mark
of 23-feet, 3.5-inches. Freshman Ronald Edmundson was 12th in the
triple jump (47-6.50).

Championship -- Merrimack 80, St. Michael's 75
Albany, N.Y. -- Barry Spears had 19 points and eight rebounds to earn most
valuable player honors as Merrimack upset St. Michael's, 80-75, in the ECAC
Division Il championship on Saturday evening at the University at Albany's
Recreation and Convocation Center.
Merrimack, seeded fourth, also knocked off Albany, the No. 1 seed, in the
semi-final round, and finished the season with a 16-13 record.
The Warriors trailed 68-66 with 5:55 remaining, but then reeled off eight
unanswered points to go ahead for good. Spears, a 6-foot-3 junior, hit a driving
bank shot and a fastbreak layup in that stretch.
Shawn Brown, who had 10 points, seven rebounds and five assists, and was
an all-tournament choice, and Spears each canned a pair of free throws in the last
18 seconds to hold the lead.
Geoff Card led St. Michael's (16-13) with 21 points, while Mark Pater and Jay
Wandtke added 17 and 16, respectively.

Garden City, N.Y. -- Sophomore guard Megan Moran scored 10 of her 16 points in
the second half as Adelphi rallied for a 71-67 victory over Albany in the semi-final
round of the 1998 ECAC Division Il Tournament on Saturday afternoon at
Woodruff Hall. Adelphi, the tourney's top seed, meets LIU-Southampton, a 73-62
winner over West Chester (Pa.), in Sunday's championship.
Albany (14-13), the fourth seed, shot 64 percent from the field in the opening
period to grab a 38-33 halftime advantage. Sophomore Megan Buchanan netted
11 of her team-high 16 points in the stanza.
Adelphi (18-11) responded with an 8-2 run to start the second half. Molly
McHugh, who had all 12 of her points after the intermission, and added seven
assists, canned a jumper for a 41-40 lead.
The Great Danes went back in front at 47-44 with 11:26 remaining on
consecutive baskets by Buchanan and Marlana Wheelwright. But Adelphi tallied
12 of the game's next 16 points to go ahead for good. McHugh's free throw
Snapped a 49-all tie, before Lauren Pellegrino (12 points) hit a short jumper for a
56-51 advantage with 6:35 left.
Kelly Paolino (Schalmont H.S.) had 10 points and five assists for the Great
Danes, while freshman Liz Tucker was the third Albany player in double figures
with 10.

Albany, N.Y. -- Matt Gibson scored 24 points to pace five players in double figures
as Merrimack upended Albany, 92-82, in the semi-final round of the 1998 ECAC
Division Il Tournament at the Recreation and Convocation Center. The Great
Danes, who were the tourney's top seed, finish with a 19-8 record. St. Michael's,
the No. 2 seed, held off Molloy, 69-67, in Friday's first contest.
Merrimack (15-13) snapped a 25-25 deadlock in the first half with 11
consecutive points, and never trailed the rest of the way. Gibson, who canned 10
of 16 field goals, hit a jump hook to start the run. Matt Van Leeuwen (11 points)
ended the stretch with a three-pointer.
The Warriors still held an 11-point cushion at 55-44 midway through the
final period. But Albany rallied behind the play of Andre Duncan, who recorded
his 12th double-double this season with 28 points and 12 rebounds. The 6-foot-6
senior's follow shot sliced the Merrimack lead to 65-62 with 6:34 remaining.
However, the Great Danes never got any closer, as the visitors responded
with seven of the game's next eight points. Shawn Brown (13 points, 6 assists) hit
© a layup after a steal for a 72-63 cushion.
Albany's Todd Cetnar (Amsterdam H.S.) matched a season-high with 19
points, while senior Darrin Jahnel (Schalmont) finished his career with 12. Tom
McGoldrick, a 6'5" senior, added 11 points and 11 rebounds.
In the first semifinal, Jay Wandtke had 21 points as St. Michael's squeaked
by Molloy. The Purple Knights, who are 16-12 overall, will meet Merrimack in
Saturday's championship.
Molloy (13-14) battled back from an 18-point halftime deficit to close within
59-57 with 5:30 remaining. Later, Geoff Card hit a driving one-hander and John
Gonzalez (13 points) buried a three-pointer to push St. Michael's advantage to 68-
61.
Omar Kasi, who had 16 points and five assists, helped Molloy make one
more stab at the lead, when he hit two free throws and a drive from the top of the
key to get his club within 69-67 with 11 seconds left. Card missed two free throws
for St. Michael's, before the Lions' Reginald Dorsey failed to connect on 16-foot
jumper as time expired.
Molloy's Frank Wassenbergh had 15 points and 12 rebounds, and was one
of four players who scored in double digits.

ANDRE DUNCAN NAMED TO TWO ALL-STAR BASKETBALL SQUADS
University at Albany's Andre Duncan was named to two regional men's
basketball all-star teams on Wednesday. Duncan, a 6-foot-6 senior, was chosen
to the Daktronics NCAA Division II Northeast Region First Team, and voted first-
team All-ECAC-North by the region's head coaches and sports information
directors.
Duncan, the 1998 New England Collegiate Conference Player of the Year,
ranks third among the conference leaders in scoring at 18.9 points per game, and
is first in rebounding (8.5 pg) and blocked shots (2.1 pg). The UA forward has
scored 20-plus on 12 occasions this season, and posted 11 double-doubles in
points and rebounds.
He ranks fifth among Albany's all-time scorers with 1,425 points, and is first in
blocks (182) and ninth in rebounding (684).
A native of Monticello, N.Y., Duncan leads Albany (19-7) into this week's ECAC
Division Il Tournament. The Great Danes, as the top seed, host Merrimack at 7:30
p.m. on Friday, March 6 in the semi-final round. St. Michael's and Molloy battle at
5:30 in the other semifinal at the Recreation and Convocation Center. The first-
day winners meet in Saturday's championship. Tip-off is 7:30.

NORTHEAST ALL-REGION TEAM
FRIE, PA += While many regions showcased seniorily, the
Daktronics NCAA Division II Northeast All-Region First Team
featured just two seniors. The rest of the squad was comprised
of two juniors and a sophomore. The five first team members
are now candidates for the Daktronics NCAA Division Il Men’s
Basketball All-America Teams. Those teams will be announced
March 17,
Voting was conducted among Sports Information Directors in
the Northeast Region. The 1997-98 Daktronics Men’s Basket-
ball All-America Teams will be announced in conjunction with
the 1998 NCAA Division II Elite Eight in Louisville, Kentucky
on March 18-21.
The five first team members of each region are placed on the
national ballot, with all Division II Sports Information Directors
sclecting a first, second and third team All-America units.

NAMED ECAC/AMERISUITES DIVISION II NORTH PLAYER OF THE YEAR
Casey Carney of Assumption College Tabbed Rookie of the Year
CENTERVILLE, Mass. - Sophomore guard Shaun Fein of Stonchill College has been named the 1997-98 Eastern
College Athletic Conference/AmeriSuites Division II North Player of the Year. In addition, Casey Carney of
Assumption College was voted the ECAC/AmeriSuites Division II North Rookie of the Year. The ECAC Division il
North All-Star team and major awards were selected by the region’s 20 head coaches and sports information directors.
Fein has led Stonehill! College to a 21-6 record and its first NCAA Division II Tournament appearance since 1989. The
Northeast-10 Conference Player of the Year, he enters this weekend’s Northeast Regional averaging a team-high 20.1
points and 5.2 assists per game. A two-time Northeast-10 Player of the Weck selection, he recorded a pair of 45-point
performances during the year and set the school record for three-pointers in a game (9) during a loss to Bentley
College. He ranks among the Northeast-10 leaders in both three-point field goals per game (3.2) and three-point ficld
© goal percentage (.410). The Centerville, Mass. native becomes the first men’s basketball playcr from Stonehill to be
named ECAC Division I! North Player of the Year. |
Carey played in 30 of 31 games for Assumption, which claimed its first Northeast-10 Conference Tournament title
since 1992, The Greyhounds will be making their first NCAA Division II Tournament appearance since 1992 and
bring a 22-9 record into this weekend's Northeast Regional. The Northeast-10 Freshman of the Year and six-time
conference Freshman of the Week, Carney drilled a team-high 61 three-pointers and ranked third on the team in
scoring (13.7 ppg). Carney is a native of Seekonk, Mass.

ALBANY MEN & WOMEN EARN ECAC DIVISION Il TOURNEY BERTHS
Centerville, Mass. -- After posting a 19-7 regular-season record, the University at
Albany has been awarded the top seed and will host the 1998 Eastern College
Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division Il men's basketball tournament on March 6-7.
Albany's women's team also received an ECAC tournament bid, and will travel to
Adelphi on Saturday.
Albany's Recreation and Convocation Center will be the site for the four-team
men's tournament. In the semifinals on Friday, March 6th, St. Michael's (15-12)
battles Molloy (13-13) at 5:30 p.m., while Albany meets Merrimack (14-13) at 7:30.
The semi-final winners will tangle in the championship at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday,
March 7. Tickets are $5.00 for adults and $2.00 for students. The University's
ticket office is open from 10:00 a.m to 4:00 p.m. during the week.
The Great Danes are led by Andre Duncan, the New England Collegiate
Conference Player of the Year. Duncan is averaging 18.9 points and 8.5 rebounds
per game. Albany's post-season action will air on WROW Radio (590 AM),
beginning with the pre-game show 15 minutes prior to tip-off. Albany's last post-
season appearance was at the 1995 NCAA Division Ill tournament.

Albany (14-12) will be the fourth seed in the ECAC Division Il women's
tournament. Adelphi (17-11) is the top seed, and will host the Great Danes in a
semi-final contest on Saturday, March 7 at 4:00 p.m. The Panthers’ Woodruff Hall
will serve as the site for this two-day tourney.
West Chester (15-13), the No. 2 seed, meets LIU-Southampton (15-12) in the
other semifinal. The winners advance in the bracket to the championship on
Sunday, March 8 at 2:00 p.m.
Kelly Paolino (Schalmont H.S.) leads the Great Danes to their first post-
season appearance since the 1995 New York State (NYSWCAA) Division III
tournament. The second-team all-NECC guard is averaging 12.2 points, 4.0
assists and 3.2 steals.

Comments: USA Indoor Track & Field Championships
Atlanta, Ga. -- University at Albany's Samantha Cohen placed fifth in
the women's 3,000-meter racewalk at the USA Indoor Track & Field
championships.
Cohen, a junior from Croton, N.Y., walked 14:15.10 over the Georgia
Dome surface. She finished behind champion Michelle Rohl, who won
her third indoor title since 1995 with a time of 12:40.38.
Ellakisha Williamson, a three-event winner at the New England
Collegiate Conference championships on Feb. 21, failed in her attempt
to reach the 60-meter high hurdles final. Williamson, a Albany High
School graduate, did set a school record of 8.47 seconds in the
preliminary round.
Former Albany All-American Geoffrey York (Troy H.S.) missed the
men's 60-hurdles final by two-tenths of a second. York, competing for
the New York Pioneer Club, was clocked in 7.80.
In addition, 1996 Olympian Shana Williams, previously an Albany
assistant track coach, was second in the women's long jump with a
mark of 22-feet, 3.50-inches.
