GREAT DANES MAKE ECAC BASEBALL PLAYOFFS;
FIRST POST-SEASON BID IN SEVEN YEARS

ALBANY, NY - The University at Albany Great Dane baseball team (13-10 overall, 13-7
ECAC) has been selected as the third seed in the four-team Eastern College Athletic Conference
Upstate Region Playoffs. It is the first time since 1987, when Albany won the SUNY Athletic
Conference Championship in their last year in the conference, that the Danes have earned a post-
season bid. They had narrowly a post-season bid the past two seasons.

Albany will play the second seeded Hartwick College Warriors (23-11, 17-7 ECAC) in
_ Oneonta, New York on Friday, May 13, at 3:30 p.m. The other first-round game will also be Friday
afternoon between the first seed, Hobart College (27-9, 16-6 ECAC), and Brockport State (16-13,
15-7 ECAC), the fourth seed. The winners will meet at the home field of the highest remaining
seed on Saturday at 2:00 p.m., with a scheduled rain date on Sunday.

"Every year we've approached baseball without the same resources as the best
competitors in the region," said Albany head coach Ed Zaloom. "We don't have a fall program,
and | spend a lot of time coaching (football). We've worked very hard to keep up with the other
competitors, and it just feels great to finally be rewarded for our hard work after finishing one team
away the last two years. Our kids are extremely happy, but it doesn't mean anything, yet. We still
have to prepare for the first game and try to bring home the trophy."

Albany opened its ECAC season with a doubleheader sweep of Hartwick, 1-0 and 4-3.
Senior standout Leo Garcia (.426, 5 HR, 17 RBI) was the star with the game-winning hits in both
contests; a home run for the only scoring in the opener, and an RBI single in the bottom of the
seventh inning in the nightcap. Bill Jarvela (4-4, 4.78 ERA) and Roger Walters (3-2, 5.17 ERA)
each pitched complete games, allowing just five and four hits, respectively.

SEMIFINALS - Friday, May 13
#4 Brockport St. (17-9) at #1 Hobart College (27-9) - 4:00 p.m.
#3 University at Albany (13-10) at #2 Hartwick College (23-11) - 3:30 p...

FINAL - Saturday, May 14
® Winners meet at 2:00 p.m. at site of higher seed.

DANES PERFECT HOME RECORD IS GONE;
PLAY-OFF HOPES MAY BE, TOO

ALBANY, NY - The North Adams State Mohawks (11-17) swept a double-
header from the University at Albany Great Danes (13-10, 13-7 ECAC) 10-1 and
7-3, virtually eliminating any playoff hopes for the hosts. A sweep by the Danes
most likely would have landed them a spot in the Eastern College Athletic
Conference (ECAC) Upstate New York Championships, but their 13-7 ECAC
record will probably not stand up against the competition when the selection
} committee chooses the four participants this weekend. Albany also lost its
chance at a perfect record at home, finishing 10-2 at University Field.

Albany got on top in the opener when Dan Heslin led off the first inning
with a hit, extending his hitting streak to 13 games, and scored on a single by
second baseman Rich Apiscopa. But that was the only high-lite for the Danes as
North Adams plated five runners in the fourth and three more in the fifth, putting
the game out of reach. Joe Gaurino and Joe Ebert both went three for four for
the winners. Ebert drove in four runs, while Bill Robertson allowed just six hits in
posting the complete-game victory.

Albany took a 3-2 lead into the sixth inning of the night cap following a
three-run third inning, which was capped with an RBI single by Leo Garcia. But
the Mohawks managed three runs in the sixth chasing starter Keith Walsh and
two more in the seventh off of reliever Kevin Mahone, to put the game out of
reach. Seven different Great Danes got base hits, but they could not string them
together as Scott Shepherd got the victory with relief from Jim White. Gaurino
went one for three with three RBI and Fred Lahaie went three for four, scoring
two runs for the winners.

ALBANY, NY - Junior Peter White scored his third goal of the game with

seconds to defeat Hamilton College, 11-10. Albany, which won for the third
straight time, improves to 7-5, while Hamilton ends the season at 3-8.

"We didn't play very well at all," said Albany coach Steve O'Shea, "We'll
have to play much better on Friday to beat Hartwick."
