SHCREE LEWIS CHOSEN CONFERENCE DEF. PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Waltham, Mass. -- University at Albany's Shcree Lewis has been selected as the
Eastern Football Conference Defensive Player of the Week. He earned the
ECAC's Division Il award on Sunday.
Lewis, a junior linebacker, posted a team-high nine tackles, recovered
three fumbles, and scored on a 12-yard fumble return in the first quarter in
Saturday's 44-7 victory at C.W. Post.
Greg Green, a sophomore roverback from Auburn, N.Y., made the
conference's weekly honor roll. He had his best day in a UA jersey with eight
tackles, including two sacks, two forced fumbles and one recovery.
ALBANY RANKED IN LAMBERT CUP POLL
East Rutherford, N.J. -- Albany (3-1, Eastern 2-0) is ranked 10th in this week's
Lambert/Meadowlands Division II Football Poll as announced today. New Haven
is in the top spot with a 3-0 record, while Slippery Rock (3-1) is second. The
Great Danes are home against Merrimack on Saturday at 6:00 p.m.

Centerville, Mass. -- University at Albany's Shcree Lewis has been selected
as the ECAC Division II North Defensive Player of the Week for his
performance in Saturday's 44-7 upset victory over C.W. Post in an Eastern
Football Conference contest.
Lewis, a junior linebacker from Queens, N.Y., posted a team-high nine
tackles, recovered three fumbles, and scored on a 12-yard fumble return in
the first quarter. Albany (3-1, Eastern 2-0), with Lewis leading the defense,
caused six turnovers, recorded seven sacks, and held the Pioneers to 34
net rushing yards.
A graduate of Hudson Valley Community College, Lewis is in his first
season with the Albany program, and leads the Great Danes in tackles with
29 (18 solo).

Hamden, Conn. -- Julie Bliss (Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) and Jennifer Hahn
(Bethlehem Central) teamed to win the Flight A consolation doubles final,
while Erinn Langford (Bishop Maginn) and Linsday Colman lost in the Flight
C doubles championship at the Quinnipiac Invitational.

Bliss and Hahn defeated Sacred Heart's Lauren McPhee and Melissa
@ Bretten, 8-2, in a pro-set final. Albany's Langford-Colman duo dropped a 6-
2, 6-1 decision to Christine Abundo and Kim Smith from Quinnipiac in the
Flight C title match.
In other action, Lauren Hargett (Guilderland Central) and Kate
McCarthy captured the Flight B doubles consolation. Hargett, a freshman,
was beaten in the Flight C singles semi-final round in three sets by
Quinnipiac's Smith, 2-6, 6-0, 6-1. Bliss, Albany's No. 1 player, went three
sets in the Flight A singles semifinal, before she was dismissed by Rhode
Island's Marla Pasquale, 1-6, 6-3, 6-0.

Albany, N.Y. -- Pauliina Miettinen, the national scoring champion in Division II last
year as a sophomore, netted two goals, including a header on a centering pass
with six minutes and 26 seconds elapsed in the first half, leading Franklin Pierce
to a 4-0 victory over Albany.
Junion Katie Dempsey, also scored two goals in the first half, while the
Ravens defense allowed Albany just two shots the entire match. Freshman
Genevieve Holdridge had seven saves for the Great Danes, who fall to 2-6 overall
and 1-2 in the conference.
Franklin Pierce, ranked No. 1 in the latest national poll, improved to 7-0
overall and 1-0 in the conference.

Albany N.Y. -- Senior Rafeala Nikas tallied 20 kills and 28 digs from her outside
hitter position, but was not enough to stop Stonehill from winning a 3-1 decision
in the championship match of the Great Dane Invitational.
The Great Danes swept Saint Anselm in three straight games. Tashi
Campbell-Tulloch, a junior outside hitter, paved the way with 11 kills and 15 digs.
The Great Danes took second place in the two-day tournnament.
Three Albany players made the all-tournament team, Lisa Greiner, Rafaela
Nikas, and Julie Arbitman. The champion Stonehill squad also had three players
selected to the all-tournament team, Jessica Batcha, Pam Kelly, and Lisa
Carvalho.

University Park, Pa. -- Sophomore Ben Wright (Averill Park H.S.) finished 16th in
the men's 5.2-mile run to lead Albany to a fifth-place standing at the 1997 Spiked
Shoe Invitational.
Wright ran 27:06.49 over the circuit at Pennsylvania State University, while
teammate Shawn Higgins (Shaker H.S.) was 35th in 27:34.29. Matt Kodak led
Bucknell University to the team title by capturing first in 26:25.23.
The Albany women's cross country team took fifth place in the 5,000-meter
run. The Great Danes were led by Andrea Viger (Granville Central H.S.) who
finished in ninth in 18:44.54, while her teammate Kari Casey (Columbia H.S.) took
36th in 19.52.38. Erin Davis helped Penn State capture the team title by winning
the event in 17:57.53.

Albany, N.Y. -- Freshman Julie Arbitman had 16 kills and Lisa Greiner added
42 assists from her setter position to lead Albany to a 15-6, 15-6, 15-12
victory over Saint Anselm in the preliminary round of the Great Dane
Invitational on Friday evening at University Gym.
Earlier, Rafaela Nikas had 12 kills and 16 digs in a 15-2, 15-8, 15-17,
15-2 triumph over Merrimack. Albany (6-0) and Stonehill each posted two
victories on the first day of competition.
The two-day tournament continues on Saturday with matches at 10:00
a.m., 12 noon and 2:00 p.m.

Binghamton, N.Y. -- Tom Mason had two goals and one assist, all in the
second half, in leading Albany to its fourth straight win with a 4-0 victory
over Binghamton on Wednesday. Kevin Koscielniak (Saratoga Springs
H.S.) added one goal and one assist.
Mason, a junior midfielder, broke a scoreless tie with 33 minutes
remaining in the contest, when he hit the top right corner on a 20-yard
blast. He added his sixth goal of the season with a tap-in at the far post at
the 72:01 mark. Koscielniak redirected a shot past Binghamton goalkeeper
Brett Rosenthal for his fourth of the year, before freshman Bryan Grabon
closed out the scoring with 8:19 left.
Mike Cooper and Dave Welch combined to make two saves for the
Great Danes, who improve to 5-1 overall and host Division II's ninth-ranked
team in Franklin Pierce on Saturday at 1:00. Rosenthal and Phil Conte

Phelan netted her first goal off a pass to the far post by Michelle

padded the Lady Knights’ margin at 71:28 with a 6-yard chip over
goalkeeper Genevieve Holdridge's head.

Albany, N.Y. -- Nancy Nicsevic (Columbia H.S.) scored two second-half
goals as Albany upended Rensselaer, 2-0, in a battle of undefeated teams
on Tuesday at Albany Field. The Great Danes are off to their best start in
school history with an 8-0 record.
Chrissy Bradt (Shenendehowa) intercepted a pass in the Rensselaer
defensive zone, and fed Nicsevic right in front with five minutes and 23
seconds elapsed in the final period. Nicsevic, a junior, scored her fifth goal
of the season off a rebound with 5:04 remaining.
Leia Shick had two saves in posting her fourth shutout this season,
and the Great Danes outshot the visitors, 22-2. Rensselaer (5-1), which had
allowed just one goal entering the contest, got 14 saves from junior Kristen
McKenna.

Rindge, N.H. -- Freshman Julie Arbitman has been selected as the New
England Collegiate Conference Rookie of the Week (Sept. 15-21) in
women's volleyball as the conference office announced today.
Arbitman, a 5-foot-9 outside hitter, earned the award for the second
straight week. She averaged 3.29 kills and 3.57 digs in victories over
Queens College and Sacred Heart. Arbitman registered 19 kills and 19 digs
in a come-from-behind 3-2 triumph over Queens last Friday.

Holdridge Named NECC Defensive Player of the Week in Soccer
Rindge, N.H. -- University at Albany's Genevieve Holdridge has been
selected as the New England Collegiate Conference Defensive Player
of the Week (Sept. 15-21) in women's soccer.
Holdridge, a freshman goalkeeper from Mahopac, N.Y., had nine
saves in Albany's 1-0 conference victory at Southern Connecticut State
on Sept. 17, and posted a season-high 18 saves in a 1-0 overtime loss
at Bridgeport last Saturday.
Holdridge has a 1.99 goals against average, 55 saves, and two
shutouts in five starting assignments for Albany (2-4 overall, NECC 1-
1).

Bridgeport, Conn. -- Bryan Grabon netted the game-winner off a header in
the first half to lift Albany to a 2-1 victory over Bridgeport in the New
England Collegiate Conference opener for both teams.
Defender Russell Di Benedetto found Grabon on the far post after a
throw-in, and the freshman headed the ball past goalkeeper Walter
Carmona to break a 1-1 deadlock. Albany (4-1, NECC 1-0) got four saves
from junior Mike Cooper, while Carmona had two saves for Bridgeport, who
beat C.W. Post, in their 1997 debut last weekend.

Stony Brook, N.Y. -- Sophomore Ben Wright (Averill Park) captured fifth in
35:58.40 at Sunken Meadow State Park to lead Albany to a second-place
finish at the Stony Brook Invitational. Andrea Viger (Granville Central) was
third, as the Great Danes were fifth in the women's event.
Manhattan's Jeff Howard won the men's 10K race in a course-record
35:25.00, and was 33 seconds ahead of Wright and field of 167 runners.
Albany's Brendan Howell was 11th, while Rob Naughter (Guilderland) and
Shawn Higgins (Shaker) were 21st and 27th, respectively. Shippenburg
won the team title with 40 points, while the Great Danes were second with
89 in the 17-team event.
In the women's 5K competition, Viger raced 19:49.3 for her third-place
standing. Freshman Kari Casey (Columbia) ended up in 31st with a time of
21:18.7, while teammate Jen Dott (Colonie) was 36th.

Albany, N.Y. -- Chrissy Bradt (Shenendehowa H.S.) scored two goals as
Albany won an early-season battle of unbeatens with a 3-0 victory over
Quinnipiac at Albany Field.
Freshman Katie Cunningham scored her first collegiate goal off a
crossing pass from Tovah Atwell with 24 minutes and 22 seconds left in the
opening period. Bradt found the cage twice within a 43-second span in the
second half. The sophomore forward's 18-yard drive into the far corner
gave the Great Danes a three-goal advantage, and was her fourth goal of
the season.
Leia Shick and Cathi Burek combined on the shutout for Albany,
which improved to 6-0, and is the lone remaining NCAA Division II team with
an undefeated record. Melissa Beaulieu had seven saves for the Quinnipiac
(3-1).

State in the New England Collegiate Conference opener for both teams.
Barry converted a direct kick with four minutes and 53 seconds left in
the opening period for her third goal of the season. Freshman Genevieve
Holdridge had nine saves for Albany (2-3, NECC 1-0).
Southern Connecticut State (3-1, NECC 0-1) outshot the Great Danes,
15-11, and goalkeeper Regina Sullivan made six saves.

ARBITMAN NAMED NECC ROOKIE OF THE WEEK
Rindge, N.H. -- University at Albany's Julie Arbitman has been selected as
the New England Collegiate Conference Rookie of the Week in women's
volleyball for the week ending, Sept. 14.
Arbitman, a freshman from Nanuet, N.Y., averaged 4.71 kills and 4.0
digs per game in two victories over C.W. Post and Concordia College last
Saturday. The 5-foot-9 outside hitter recorded 26 kills and 13 digs in her
first collegiate match, a 3-1 decision at C.W. Post.
The Great Danes are 2-0 with home matches on Friday (Queens, 7:00)
and Saturday (Sacred Heart, 4:00) at University Gym.

ENSHRINES THREE INTO ATHLETIC HALL OF FAME

ALBANY, N.Y. -- The University at Albany will en-
shrine three former athletes into its Athletic Hall of Fame
on Saturday, September 20 at the 14th annual HOF
Brunch and Induction Ceremony. The event will be held
at 10:30 a.m. inthe Recreation and Convocation Center
(RACC) Hall of Fame Room on campus. Albany's
football game with St. Lawrence follows at 1:00 p.m.
The new inductees and their sports: Glenn Carlin
'88, football: Jeff O'Donnell '74, football and lacrosse;
and John Quattrocchi '73, basketball.
With this year's class, there are 74 former athletes,
coaches and adminstrators who have been inducted into
the University's Hall of Fame.
Glenn Carlin (1984-88) -- One of the top wide
receivers in Albany history, Carlinwas a member of the
1985 ECAC North Division II| championshipteam which
rallied from a 21-point halftime deficit against Plymouth
State in the final, and finished with a 9-2 record.
Carlin currently ranks second in career receiving
yardage (1,392), and is third in receptions (86) and
touchdown catches (12). Hewon three varsity letters and
was voted the team's offensive back award in 1987.
As asenior, Carlin caught 47 passes for 755 yards
and seven touchdowns, and accounted for 882 all-
purpose yards. He was selected to the Football News
Preseason Division III All-America squad. Carlin grabbed
25 passes for 434 yards and two TDs asa junior, and had
14 receptions for 203 and three scores in his sophomore
campaign.
Anative of Oceanside, N.Y. (Oceanside H.S.), Carlin
earned aB.A. in psychology, and was chosen tothe GTE
Academic All-America District | football team on two
occasions. He graduated cum laude, and was a dean's
list student. Carlin later received a B.S. in physical
therapy from Upstate Medical, a SUNY Health Science
Center in Syracuse.
Carlin and his wife, Lisa, reside in East Meadow,
N.Y., where is a partner and physical therapist with
Garden City Physical Therapy, a private sports medicine
practice. They have one daughter, Amanda.
Jeff O'Donnell (1970-74) -- An all-around athlete in
the early 1970s, O'Donnell played four years of lacrosse,
competed forthree years in football, and was a member
of the soccer team for two seasons.

crosse, O'Donnell graduated as the school's all-time
scorer with 40 goals and 34 assists for 74 points. He was
selected to the All-Northern New York Division team by
the United State Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association
(USILA) three times as a midfielder, and led the Great
Danes to a share of the championship in 1971. Albany
finished with an 8-2 record, and followed with a 7-2
season in 1972.
O'Donnell, who attended JohnH. Glenn High School
in Huntington, N.Y., never played organized football until
college. He became the starting safety during the ‘71
season when the program was a Club team, and was a
member ofthe first varsity squad in 1973. O'Donnell was
two-time recipient of the team's top defensive back
award, and a Capital District College All-Star. He lettered
twice in soccer as a sophomore and freshman.
A resident of Lansdale, Pa., O'Donnell is Attorney,
Assistant General Counsel for Unisys Corporation. He
received his undergraduate degree in history with a minor
in geography and earned the Adna Risley Award. In
1983, O'Donnell graduated with honors from the St.
John's University School of Law, and is presently admit-
ted to practice in five states. He is a member of the
Pennsylvania Bar Association.
He and his wife, Barbara Ann, have three children,
Matthew, Thomas and Brian.
John Quattrocchi (1970-73) -- AnAll-SUNY Athletic
Conference and All-East guard, Quattrocchi was a three-
year starter for head coach Richard "Doc" Sauers.
During that time, the Great Danes posted a combined 51-
19 record, which included three consecutive 17-win
campaigns, and an ECAC College Division tournament
appearance in 1973.
Quattrocchi attended Fort Edward (N.Y.) High School,
and began his college career at the University of
Connecticut before transferring to Albany. In70 games,
he finished as the school's career free throw leader with
an 85.8 percentage, and canned 301 of 351 attempts.
Quattrocchi currently stands 20th in scoring (969 points)
and 17th in scoring average (13.8 per game) on the all-
time charts.
A two-time captain, Quattrocchi earned all-SUNY
Athletic Conference honors in 1972 and 1973, and was
MVP of the Capital District Tournament as a junior.
Quattrocchi received his B.A. in math and education,
and went on to earn a master's degree in educational

week's ECAC Division Il Honor Roll. Savino, a senior quarterback, completed 13
of 18 passes for 153 yards and two touchdowns, and ran for another score in
Saturday's 42-0 victory over Sacred Heart. Savino, the school's all-time passer,
toppled the 5,000-mark in career passing yards, and has 5,103 with 38 passing

Albany, N.Y. -- Senior quarterback Joe Savino passed for two touchdowns
and ran for another to lead Albany to a 42-0 victory over Sacred Heart in the
Eastern Football Conference opener for both teams on Saturday evening at
University Field.
Savino, who completed 13 of 18 passes for 153 yards in less than
three quarters, scored on a one-yard sneak to cap a 63-yard march, and
then fired a 32-yard touchdown strike to split end Dan Gmelin for a 14-0
lead with 3:20 left in the first quarter.
Albany (1-1) scored on a pair of short drives in the second quarter
for a 28-0 halftime advantage. Sophomore tailback Greg Garrett, who
carried 11 times for 64 yards, scored on a five-yard option pitch with 13:40
left in the period, and then powered over left tackle for another 5-yard TD
run on his team's next possession.
Savino, who suffered through a four-interception day in last week's
opener, scrambled after rolling out to his right, and found tight end Seth
Thomas in the right end zone with a 7-yard scoring pass early in the third
stanza. Freshman fullback Ben Kelcey reached paydirt on a 12-yard
scamper to complete the scoring with 8:22 left in the quarter.
“You could not ask for anything more from your opening game at
home," said Savino, who has 5,309 career yards in total offense and needs
90 more to become the school's leader. "We came out and put the ball in
the end zone, and the defense shut them down."
The Great Danes, who committed six miscues in their first game,
turned the ball over just once, and accounted for 384 yards in total offense.
Thomas caught six passes for 59 yards, while Gmelin had four receptions
for 65. °
Albany's defense recorded its first shutout since Nov. 11, 1995, a 50-
0 victory over King's, Pa., and held Sacred Heart (0-1) to 167 total yards,
including 28 through the air. Fullback Terrence Washington was the
leading ball carrier for the Pioneers with 59 yards on 13 attempts.

Bronx, N.Y. -- Sophomore Ben Wright (Averill Park H.S.) finished seventh in
the men's five-mile competition to lead Albany to a fifth-place standing at
the Fordham Invitational.
Wright ran 26:22 over the Van Cortlandt Park circuit, while teammate
Brendan Howell was 10th in 26:28. Brown's Kay Woodman led the Bruins
to the the team title by capturing first in 26:28. St. Joseph's, Harvard and
Delaware were ahead of the Great Danes in the final standings. UA's Todd
Weiss, a sophomore from Shaker H.S., was 53rd in 27:57.
Albany took eighth place in the women's meet, which was also won
by Brown. Andrea Viger, a sophomore from Granville H.S., raced 3.1 miles
in 19:44 to finish 20th. Three other UA runners, from area high schools,
were in the top 100. Erica Viger (Granville) was 63rd in 21:00, while Jen
Dott (Colonie) and Kari Casey (Columbia) were 66th and 84th, respectively.

Peck, a second-team All-America choice one year ago, dodged four
defenders and fired a nine-yard shot to the right of goalkeeper Virginia
Capicchioni with 28 minutes and 56 seconds remaining to break a 1-1 tie.
Senior attack Deidre Hynes had drawn Sacred Heart even in the
opening period, when she scored from the top of the circle with 14:23 left.
Peck gave Albany (4-0) an early advantage by placing a shot in the lower left
corner with two minutes elapsed in the contest.
Leia Shick had three saves for the Great Danes, who play at Southern
Connecticut State on Saturday. Capicchioni and Dina Whalen combined to
stop five shots in the Pioneer cage.

Springfield, Mass. -- Wendi Lawson and Kim Jorge each scored two goals
to lead American International to an 8-1 non-conference victory over visiting
Albany at AIC Park.
Lawson and Mary Kulpa gave the Yellow Jackets a 2-0 lead in the
opening three minutes and 24 seconds, before Albany's Carolyn Giaquinto
(Broadalbin-Perth H.S.) cut the deficit in half.
American International (2-0) broke the contest open later in period
with three goals in a nine-minute-and-15-second stretch. Lawson, who
added one assist, ignited the scoring spree with her second goal of the
match.
Freshman Genevieve Holdridge had 21 saves for Albany (0-3), while
three AIC goalkeepers combined to stop 10 shots.

Albany, N.Y. -- Sophomore Tovah Atwell scored the game-winner with six
minutes and 23 seconds gone in overtime to lift unbeaten Albany past Lock
Haven, 1-0, on Sunday afternoon at Albany Field.
Atwell found the lower right corner of the cage on a rebound off
goalkeeper Kristen Geissler's leg pad to break the scoreless deadlock.
Leia Shick made six saves in recording her second shutout in three
days for Albany, which improved to 3-0 on the season.
Geissler turned aside 14 shots for the Lady Eagles, who have won
three of the last five NCAA Division II national championships.

twice in the second half to lead Albany to a 3-0 victory over Bentley ina
non-conference game at Albany Field.
Bradt broke a scoreless deadlock with six minutes and three seconds
elapsed in the final period, when she fired a shot into the lower left corner
past goalkeeper Carolyn Cahill.
Bradt gave the Great Danes a 2-0 advantage with 10:15 remaining,
before forward Jen Cordes added a late goal.
Leia Shick had two saves in picking up her first shutout this season
for Albany (2-0). Cahill had 12 saves for Bentley, which opened its schedule
with a 3-2 loss at Division | Holy Cross on Wednesday.

Albany-Central Conn. Game on Time Warner Cable (Channel 9)
Albany, N.Y. -- The University at Albany's season opener in football at
Central Connecticut State on Saturday, Sept. 6 will be seen locally on
Time Warner Cable (Channel 9) at 12 noon as Director of Athletics Milt
Richards announced today.
The contest will be televised live by New England Sports Network
(NESN) as the ECAC Game of the Week. Empire Sports Network and
Time Warner Cable in Albany are airing NESN's live feed. Tom Larson
(play-by-play) and Bob Norton (commentator) are the on-air talent.
“We are pleased to be able to bring this college football
broadcast to Capital Region viewers," Albany Division President for
Time Warner Cable Jeffrey M. King said. "This kind of sports event is
in keeping with our commitment to community programming."
The Great Danes begin their third NCAA Division II season with
33 returning letterwinners off last year's 7-3 team. Central Connecticut
State plays at the Division I-AA level, and is a member of the Northeast
Conference.

Rindge, N.H. -- University at Albany's Kevin Koscielniak (Saratoga
Springs H.S.) has been selected as the New England Collegiate
Conference Player of the Week in men's soccer for the week ending,
Sept. 1.
Koscielniak, a senior forward, scored two goals and three assists
in two matches at the inaugural Albany Soccer Classic last weekend.
He had two goals and two assists in a first-round contest with Mercy,
and added one assist in the championship against C.W. Post.
A 6-foot-3, 200-pound athlete, Koscielniak upped his career totals
to 14 goals and 10 assists. Albany (1-1) is home on Saturday against
Concordia at 2:00 p.m.
