1997 NECC POST-SEASON BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT COMES TO ALBANY, N.Y.
West Haven, Conn. - - On Tuesday, the New England Collegiate Conference announced the 1997
Men’s and Women’s Post-Season Basketball Tournament will be held in Albany, New York, at the Recreation
and Convocation Center (RACC) on the campus of the University at Albany, with the Men’s and Women’s
Championship Games to be held at the campus site’s of the highest-seeded team remaining.
The eight-team tournament (men and women) will begin on Sunday, February 23, 1997 with four
women’s quarterfinal games. The men will play their four quarterfinal games on Monday, February 24th, with
the Men’s and Women’s semifinals on Tuesday, February 25th. All games at the RACC would be at 1:00 p.m.,
3:00 p.m., 6:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. The final would be played on Saturday, March 1st at the highest seed’s
campus site. (Men - 3 p.m.; Women - 7 p.m.)
NECC Commissioner Bill Moore felt “The New England Collegiate Conference looks forward to the
University at Albany's hosting the quarterfinal and semifinal rounds of its men’s and women’s basketball
tournament championships . The University at Albany will do a great job with the 1997 NECC Basketball
Tournaments. Milt Richards (University at Albany, Director of Athletics) will put full effort toward running a first
class event. The Albany facility is one of the best in the East and the Capital District is Known for its support of
collegiate basketball. The conference made a good decision about site selection and the new format may well
serve as the pattern of the future.”
The Recreation and Convocation Center (RACC) opened in the spring of 1992, an $11 million state-
of-the art facility. The RACC is the home for Albany’s men’s and women’s basketball teams, and has an .11
mile indoor track. The 5,000-seat arena also serves as a major venue for community events such as rock and
pop concerts, sporting events and University activities.

case tne capital Region, an outstanding campus and an excelient athletic facility for this important basketball
tournament.”

NECC ANNOUNCES PRESEASON BASKETBALL SELECTIONS
West Haven, Conn. - - On Thursday, the New England Collegiate Conference announced their preseason
standings and All-NECC selections for the 1996-97 season.
Franklin Pierce, last season’s NECC Regular Season Champion edged out New Hampshire College
93-92 points for the men’s top spot, while Southern Connecticut finished in third place with 83 points.
On the women’s side, UMass Lowell, last season’s NECC runner-ups, finished at the top spot with 92
points, followed by Franklin Pierce with 83 points and Bridgeport, the 1996 NECC Regular Season and
Tournament Champion finished in third place with 81 points.
The 1996-97 Preseason Player of the Year, Ben Mitchell (Third Team All-America, First Team All-
NECC); (6-6, Jr., F, Brockton, Mass.) of Franklin Pierce heads the All-NECC First Team which includes,
@ Orlando Ranson (6-3, So., G, Baltimore, Md.; 1995-96 Rookie of the Year, Second Team All-NECC) and
Scott Smith (6-6, Sr., EK East Hampton, N.Y.; 1995-96 Second Team All-NECC) of New Hampshire College,
