UALBANY RECORDS SEVENTH WIN IN 16-11 NON-LEAGUE TRIUMPH OVER LONGWOOD
Albany, N.Y. — Kayla Best (Guilderland) and Tee Ladouceur (Bethlehem Central) each had four goals in
leading UAlbany to a 16-11 non-league victory over Longwood on Sunday afternoon at John Fallon Field. The
Great Danes, who improved to 7-3 overall, have won five of their last six games.
UAlbany led 9-6 at halftime, but then ran off four unanswered during the opening 10 minutes of the final
period. Ladouceur converted a free-position attempt to begin that stretch. Freshman Nikki Branchini
(Guilderland), who had a career-high three goals, later drove around a defender in the middle of the zone.
Brittany Scott sent a free-position shot into the lower left corner, before Ladouceur drove to the cage and
switched to her right hand for a seven-goal cushion with 20:07 to play. The freshman midfielder had a team-
leading 29 goals.
Longwood (4-9) held a 2-1 advantage early in the first half after Liz Sellmayer cut to the top of the
crease to finish off Christine Comeau’s feed. The Great Danes answered by scoring four consecutive times
over the next five minutes. Jodi Battaglia drew her team even with a free-position goal and then set up Best on
a right-to-left crossing pass with 23:11 left in the stanza. Scott, a senior midfielder, completed a fastbreak,
before Ladouceur was credited with a goal after a Lancer defender misplayed a loose ball into her own net.
UAlbany was still on top, 8-4, after Jane Bush scored from the top of the crease, but the Lancers cut
that lead in half with a pair of unassisted goals. Sellmayer netted her second of the game when she rotated
inside two defenders from left of the cage. Carlie Nethken then found the net on a rebound after UAlbany
goalkeeper Katie Neer stopped Sellmayer’s initial shot. The Great Danes took a three-goal margin to the
@::: when Best, a sophomore midfielder, scored in transition by spinning to her left shoulder with 2:43
emaining.
“We made good adjustments against their defense and caused some turnovers by riding well,” said
UAlbany coach Lindsey Hart, whose team is off to its best start since the 1998 campaign will host fifth-ranked
Syracuse on Wednesday. “We didn’t execute the way we wanted for the full sixty minutes. We got away from
a disciplined style at times and didn’t finish every play.”
Sophomore midfielder Paige Farmer totaled three goals and one assist for the Lancers, who are in their
second season at the NCAA Division | level. Goalkeeper Eliza Coughter made 10 saves. UAlbany’s Neer and
Emily Miller combined stop 13 shots in the cage.

TOWSON RALLIES FOR SWEEP OF UALBANY IN NON-CONFERENCE BASEBALL DOUBLEHEADER
Towson, Md. — Kevin Collins tripled with two outs in the sixth inning to give Towson a sweep of a baseball
doubleheader over UAlbany on Saturday, March 29 at Schuerholz Park. The Tigers took the first game, 8-7,
and claimed the nightcap, 4-2.
In game one, Towson took a 1-0 lead in the opening inning. After reaching base on a fielder’s choice
with two outs and stealing second, Brian Conley scored on a single up the middle by Matt Collins.
The Great Danes evened the score at one in the top of the second and went up 4-1 in the third with
three runs on four hits. Mike Konstanty opened the second with a single through the left side. Following a hit
batsman and a sacrifice bunt by junior third baseman Zac Halloran, Konstanty crossed the plate on a
groundout by junior center fielder Gary Pitcheralle. Sophomore second baseman Ralph Rizzo and senior Tom
Zink lined consecutive doubles down the left field line to lead off the third inning. After a groundout, sophomore
left fielder Brendan Rowland singled through the left side to knock in Zink and later came around to score ona
base hit by Konstanty.
Towson (11-14) answered back with three runs in each of the third and fourth innings. Nick Natoli led
off the third with a homer over the left-field fence. Following two outs, Matt Collins drove a homer to left to pull
the Tigers within one. Steve Rice drew a bases-loaded walk to plate Steve Yarsinsky and tie the game. Gary
Helmick gave Towson the lead in the fourth inning with a sacrifice fly to right field to drive in Natoli, who led off
the frame by reaching third on a single and two-base error. The Tigers went up 7-4 on a pair of unearned runs
as Matt Collins reached on a throwing error that allowed Conley to score and came around on a groundout by
Yarsinsky.
} UAlbany (4-19-1) got to within 7-5 in the sixth as Pitcheralle singled to right to score Pete Eichner. The
Tigers produced the eventual game-winning run an inning later as Austin Harclerode doubled in Yarsinsky from
second.
After a strikeout and groundout to start the ninth inning, junior shortstop Sean Donovan reached on a
fielding error to keep the inning alive. Rowland followed by drilling a full-count pitch over the fence in left.
Konstanty followed with a walk, but reliever Nate Curd nailed down the game with a groundout. Rowland went
4-for-9 in the doubleheader to extend his consecutive games hit streak to 11.
Junior Cory Warrings took the loss for the Great Danes, allowing seven runs (five earned) on nine hits
over four innings, striking out three. Chris Ott yielded one run on two hits in 2.1 innings and Marco Rivera

left field. Junior designated hitter Ryan Gugel followed by giving the Great Danes a 2-1 lead by blasting a shot
to left field for his third homer of the season. Towson rallied for three runs with two outs in the home half of the
inning. Matt Collins drew a pinch-hit walk to start the uprising. Aaron Gabrielian knotted the score at two apiece
by doubling down the right field line to plate Collins. UAlbany then intentionally walked Yarsinsky to set up a
force at any base. Kevin Collins followed with a triple to center to knock in Yarsinsky and pinch runner Terry
Gallo.

UALBANY BEGINS AMERICA EAST CONFERENCE PLAY WITH 8-2 WIN OVER BINGHAMTON
Albany, N.Y. — Corey Small had two goals and two assists in leading UAlbany to an 8-2 victory over
Binghamton in the America East Conference opener for both teams on Saturday afternoon at John Fallon
Field. The temperature at face-off was below 30 degrees while a stiff northwest wind blew across the field.
UAlbany (2-5, AE 1-0) led 2-1 midway through the second quarter, but rattled off three goals in a two-
minute-and-16-second span. Steve Ammann converted a bounce shot off a drive from the left side to start that
run. After goalkeeper Brett Queener cleared the ball following one of his six saves, Small finished off John
Alpizar’s crossing pass to complete a perfectly executed fastbreak. Mark Cometti drilled an underhanded shot
from the left side after being set up by Small for a four-goal lead with 3:26 left in the period.
The teams exchanged man-up goals early in the third quarter. UAlbany’s Nate Sullivan sent a blast
into the top right corner. The Bearcats’ Steven Carlson rifled a shot into the net off a pass from behind the
cage by teammate Stephen Smith. The Great Danes put the contest away with a pair of unassisted goals.
Freshman midfielder Kyle Crotty scored his second of the game by driving from the right point past a defender.
Small tallied his 14th of the season when he scooped up a ground ball in the middle of the zone, moved to his
left, and netted a behind-the-head shot past Binghamton goalkeeper Larry Kline.
“It’s always important to win your first conference game,” said UAlbany coach Scott Marr, whose team
was coming off an eight-day layoff since defeating 11th-ranked Princeton. “We were sloppy offensively and
didn’t execute. | was disappointed we didn’t put more points on the board. Binghamton’s goalkeeper made
some good saves. They play a controlled style and we were patient on defense and forced them into
turnovers.”
© The Great Danes held the visitors to the lowest goal total by a conference opponent since April 6, 2002.
Binghamton (2-4, AE 0-1) had just 17 shots on the cage and was forced into 26 miscues. UAlbany held a 2-0
lead after the opening period on goals by Brian Grodotske and Crotty. Binghamton’s Drew Wichmann cut that
deficit in half when he cut to the top of the crease to finish off Chris Mulheron’s feed shortly after a UAlbany
offside penalty had expired.
Kline, who is third among the national leaders in save percentage, stopped eight shots for the Bearcats,
who posted a 9-8 win on their home field in last year’s matchup between these teams. UAlbany has won 27 of
their 34 regular-season game against America East opponents.

DEFENDING NEC CHAMPION UALBANY BEGINS SPRING FOOTBALL PRACTICE ON MARCH 30
Albany, N.Y. — Head coach Bob Ford and the University at Albany football team will begin defense of their
2007 Northeast Conference championship when spring practice begins on Sunday, March 30. The Great
Danes will conduct 15 NCAA-allowed spring workouts and will use both Alumni Turf Field (artificial) and Mara-
Tisch Field (natural) as practice sites. The scheduled dates are: March 30 and 31 and April, 2, 4, 5, 7, 9, 11,
14, 16, 18, 21, 23, 25 and 26.
2008 Spring Preview
UAlbany won its third Northeast Conference title in 2007 by becoming the fifth team in league history to go
undefeated in conference play. The Great Danes will have to work even harder to repeat with a challenging
non-league schedule and the addition of Duquesne as an NEC member.
Head coach Bob Ford has 48 letterwinners, including 12 starters, returning from a squad that finished with
an 8-4 record. Spring practice will once again give the coaching staff an opportunity to work on all three
phases of the game and evaluate personnel.
"On defense, we have to improve in the red zone," offers Ford, who has a 225-162-1 career record in 39
varsity seasons at the collegiate level. "It's a matter of tightening things up and being more aggressive in our
approach. These practices will also allow us to identify the pass rushers and swing people on the defensive
line."
Ford continues, "Certain elements of our run offense need to be established, and we have to become
Ce. in the three-step pass game. We want to review our punt returners and long snappers on special
eams."
OFFENSE: Tailback David McCarty (LaSalle Institute) leads an offensive unit that ranked 20th nationally in
rushing at nearly 209 yards per game. McCarty, who was named to the Sports Network All-America squad,
ran for 1,503 yards, the third-highest single-season total in team history. McCarty grinded out eight 100-yard
efforts, including a career-best 247 yards in a championship-clinching win against Central Connecticut State.
Justin Gannon and Colin Simmons, a pair of juniors, rushed for 250-plus yards last season.
Quarterback Vinny Esposito, like McCarthy, made the most of his first season as a starter. He recorded
the second-best single-season passing total in school annals with 1,810 yards. He threw 12 scoring passes
and accounted for 1,946 yards in total offense. Frank Blasinsky, Dan Di Lella and Mike Tracy will also get
plenty of work during spring drills.
The Great Danes can build around three all-conference offensive linemen, but will have to replace both
starting guards. Raphael Nguti (6-6, 330) earned first-team AIl-NEC recognition at right tackle. Center Kevin
Richards (6-2, 280, Shenendehowa) and left tackle Justin Tougas (6-6, 308, Queensbury) were named to the
all-league second team.
UAlbany’'s starting receivers were seniors, but the rotation allowed for several players to be involved one
year ago. Daniel Bocanegra, a converted quarterback, hauled in 26 passes for 316 yards. Tim Bush
(Saratoga Springs) had 17 receptions for 225 yards and two TDs. In addition, the Great Danes have two tight
ends in Dan Archer (7 catches) and Marcus Miles (10 catches) who have the ability to both block and
become factors in the passing attack.
DEFENSE: The Great Danes featured a talented senior class on the defensive line. The unit helped the
defense rank 17th in points allowed among the NCAA leaders. In fact, all three starters were members of the
ll-conference first or second teams.
The good news centers around defensive tackle Tom Pandolf (6-0, 260), a first-team AIl-NEC standout.
Pandolf had his most productive campaign with 37 tackles and 3.0 sacks. Sophomore Trevor Anderson (6-2
265, Cobleskill-Richmondville) also emerged as the season progressed and finished with 28 tackles, including
seven for aloss. Mike Kelly and Tony Sparano, who had 10 tackles apiece, rotated at the defensive end
positions.

Albany, N.Y. — Sophomore pitcher Leah Mcintosh struck out nine Siena batters in game one, while Marissa
Powell and Brittany Rose (Schenectady) combined in the circle for a victory in the nightcap to lead UAlbany
softball to a softball doubleheader sweep of the Saints at Albany Field on Thursday afternoon. The Great
Danes won the first game by a score of 2-1 and held off a late rally to take game two, 3-2.
Siena (6-14) struck first in the early game, breaking a scoreless tie that lasted until the sixth inning.
Catcher Andrea Piela led off the top of the | ening with a triple to right field, and scored on an RBI single by
Jennifer Granato two batters later.
UAlbany (9-9) answered in the bottom of the frame, as senior left fielder Amber Maisonet led off with a
bunt single and advanced to second on the throw. Center fielder Nicole Kothe followed with a walk, and the
baserunners advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Michelle Connors (Shenendehowa). Bailey Van Deest hit a
ground out to second that allowed Maisonet to score and tie the game. Right fielder Meagan Butsch put the
Great Danes ahead with a triple to right centerfield, scoring Kothe. Siena pitcher Jamie Piela induced a pop-up
by Gina Mason to end the inning.
The Saints attempted to rally in the top half of the seventh, loading the bases on two singles and a
batter that was hit by a pitch. Renee Clavette pinch-hit for Siena, and McIntosh struck her out swinging to get
out of the jam and seal the win in her eighth complete-game performance.
UAlbany got on the scoreboard early in the nightcap, scoring single runs in each of the first two innings.
Maisonet drew a lead-off walk and stole second, advancing to third on a wild pitch and scoring on a groundout
y Connors. In the second frame, the Great Danes loaded the bases, led by Butsch with a single to left. Gina
ason was walked by Siena’s Lauren Shaheen and catcher Kat Smith was hit by a pitch. Freshman shortstop

by the first baseman. UAlbany added another run in the bottom half of the inning, as Connors drove an RBI
single into left centerfield to score Walraven, who led off the inning with a walk.
The Saints loaded the bases in the top of the sixth against Rose, who entered the game for Powell to
start the inning, and walked her first two batters faced. Jamie Piela recorded a bunt single to make the bags full
with no outs. UAlbany recorded the first out, gunning down Jenny McNulty at home, but Lauren Weingart
reached on a fielder’s choice to keep the bases loaded for Siena. Granato, who induced a walk from Rose
earlier in the inning, scored on a fielder’s choice, as Piela was out at third. Stacey Landini tapped a ground ball
back to Rose to end the inning.
Rose sealed the win for UAlbany in the top of the seventh, fanning three of four batters faced to earn
her first career save. Powell and Rose each finished with three strikeouts while allowing just one hit apiece.

UALBANY NAMES MJ ENGSTROM INTERIM HEAD WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL COACH
Albany, N.Y. — University at Albany Vice President and Director of Athletics Lee McElroy announced today that
MJ Engstrom has been appointed interim head women’s volleyball coach. Engstrom, who has previously been
a head coach at the collegiate level, was elevated from her role as a UAlbany assistant. Kelly Sheffield, a two-
time America East Conference Coach of the Year, left the position to become the head coach at the University
of Dayton.
“We are very appreciative of Kelly Sheffield’s contributions in building the UAlbany volleyball program to
a championship level,” McElroy said. “His team performed at a high level on the court, in the classroom, and
as members of the community. MJ Engstrom will do an excellent job as interim coach. She understands our
program and has the support of the student-athletes and administration.”
Engstrom completed her third season as the top assistant last fall. She helped guide UAlbany to its
third conference championship in the last four seasons and produced the program’s first NCAA Tournament
victory. UAlbany finished 24-10 overall and reached the NCAA’s second round for the first time in team history.
Engstrom, who has served as recruiting coordinator for the last three seasons, has been instrumental in the
Great Danes’ success by bringing in one of the top classes one year ago.
Freshman Amanda Cowdrey was named the 2007 America East rookie of the year and earned all-
conference second-team accolades. She was also joined on the all-rookie squad by classmates Brooke
Stanley and Tawny Dahmes, who hails from Engstrom’s home state of Minnesota.
Engstrom came to UAlbany after five seasons as the head coach of Nicholls State University in
Louisiana. She led the Colonials to the 2003 Southland Conference Tournament championship and the first
CAA Tournament berth in program history. Engstrom also spent two years at the helm of the Villanova
volleyball program, guiding the Wildcats to their first NCAA appearance in 1997. The tournament berth was the
first at-large bid for a Big East Conference program.
Along with her head coaching experience, Engstrom served as an assistant coach at the University of
Washington from 1998-99 and the University of North Dakota from 1990-93. She has also worked with the
USA Men’s and Women’s National Volleyball teams and has run her own volleyball camp in conjunction with
Coastal Virginia’s volleyball club since 1997.
Engstrom, a native of St. Paul, Minn., is on the editorial board for the International Journal for Volleyball
Research and is a member of the USA Volleyball Sports Medicine and Performance Commission. She was a
student-athlete at the University of Minnesota and graduated with an undergraduate degree in psychology.

COREY SMALL SCORES FOUR GOALS IN UALBANY’S 10-2 WIN OVER NO. 11 PRINCETON
Albany, N.Y. — Corey Small scored four goals, including two in each half, as UAlbany picked up its first win of
the season with a 10-2 upset of 11th-ranked Princeton on Friday afternoon at John Fallon Field.
UAlbany (1-5) ended a stretch of four consecutive one-goal losses by limiting Princeton to 10 of its 28
shots through the opening three quarters in a game played in freezing temperatures and wind gusts in excess
of 30 miles per hour. Senior goalkeeper Brett Queener made 10 saves, including six in the final period, as the
Great Danes held an opponent to its lowest goal total in nearly five years.
The Great Danes, who were edged by No. 14 Drexel just six days ago at home, snapped a 1-1 tie late
in the first quarter when Small and freshman Kyle Crotty connected 28 seconds apart. Small scored from the
right side off a pass from Steve Ammann after the Tigers were whistled for an offside call. Queener’s save of a
Mark Kovler shot led to Crotty’s goal in transition. Small gave his club a 4-1 halftime lead midway through the
second quarter when he fired an underhanded blast from the middle of the zone after freshman Brian Caufield
drove from the left corner.
Small, whose goal count was one off his career-high, and Levine stretched the lead with goals in the
final four minutes of the third quarter. Princeton goalkeeper Alex Hewitt stopped Brian Grodotske’s initial shot,
but Small recovered the rebound and found the back of the net. Levine carried the ball from the right side,
hesitated, and then spun back to his right shoulder for his fifth goal of the season with 2:44 left in the stanza.
The Great Danes, who were hosting their highest-ranked opponent since last year’s NCAA first-round
game with Loyola, scored four unanswered in the final stanza. Chris Schongar, a long-stick midfielder, helped

BEST’S LATE GOAL LEADS UALBANY PAST ST. BONAVENTURE, 11-10, AT JOHN FALLON FIELD
Albany, N.Y. — Kayla Best scored the game-winning goal with three minutes and 51 seconds remaining to lift
UAlbany past St. Bonaventure, 11-10, in non-conference women’s lacrosse play on Sunday afternoon at John
Fallon Field. The game moved to the Capital Region due to poor field conditions in western New York.
UAlbany (5-2) tied the contest at 10 apiece when Christine Grueniger faked a shot from the left and
went low around a defender with 5:23 left. Best, wno had two goals and one assist, put her team ahead as she
drove into the middle and sent a blast inside the left post. St. Bonaventure (1-3) had an opportunity to draw
even with 12 seconds on the clock, but goalkeeper Katie Neer stopped Brenna Houghton’s shot from right of
the crease at point-blank range.
“| tried to hold my position and stay patient,” explained Neer when describing Houghton’s last-second
shot. “I knew that they would be driving (to the net) in the last 20 seconds. My team has come through for me
when | didn’t play as well, so | certainly wanted to pull through for them. This is both thrilling and intense and |
didn’t want to lose.”
The Bonnies rallied from an 8-6 halftime deficit with three goals during a four-minute span of the final
period. Houghton scored her second goal of the game off a rebound, before Stephanie Jordan got the
equalizer 28 seconds later with a bounce shot from right of the crease. Kimberly Ross, a first-team All-Atlantic
10 Conference midfielder, then drove to the cage after a restart to give her team the lead with 13:02 remaining.
Freshman Tee Ladouceur tallied her third goal to the game at nine-all when she moved from left to right
and fired a shot inside the right post. The Great Danes appeared to go ahead with 6:32 to play when Jane
Bush converted a feed from Rory Redmond, but the goal was disallowed due to an illegal stick. The Bonnies
@..: advantage by scoring 23 seconds later when junior midfielder Keri Vito connected from the right side off a
pass from Catie Greene.
In the opening period, UAlbany led by as much as three on two separate occasions, including 7-4 after
freshman Jodi Battaglia netted a pair of unassisted goals. But St. Bonaventure’s Ashley Fischer converted a
free-position shot and Houghton found the cage following a turnover. UAlbany’s Bush scored in transition with
less than three minutes left in the half to stake her team to a two-goal lead at the intermission.
Neer, a first-year starter in the cage, finished with a career-high 18 saves, including several key stops
when her team went scoreless for 18-plus minutes to begin the final stanza. St. Bonaventure’s Vito had two
goals and one assist, while goalkeeper Eboni Preston turned aside 11 shots.

REGULAR-SEASON CHAMPION HARTFORD UPENDS UALBANY IN AMERICA EAST SEMIFINALS
West Hartford, Conn. — Danielle Hood totaled 18 points and nine rebounds in leading Hartford to a 60-40
victory over UAlbany in the America East Conference Tournament’s semifinal round on Saturday evening at
Chase Arena. The Hawks, the regular-season champion and top seed, moved on to the championship game
for the fourth consecutive year. The conference tournament champion receives an automatic NCAA berth.
Hartford (26-5) used a stifling defense that limited its opponent to just 24-percent shooting on 6-of-24
attempts after halftime. The Hawks led 38-33, but then held UAlbany (13-18) scoreless for the next five
minutes. During that period, Diana Delva, a 6-foot-2 sophomore, scored in transition and MaryLynne Schaefer
converted a back cut off a high-low exchange from Hood. |
The Hawks, who have captured three America East titles since 2002, still led 47-38 with 9:03
remaining, but once again kept the UAlbany offense in check as the Great Danes were kept off the scoreboard
for nearly seven minutes. Hartford ran off 11 unanswered during that span in running their winning streak to
eight straight. Erica Beverly, who missed most of last season with an injury, had nine of her 15 points in that
stretch. She finished off a fastbreak layup following Lisa Etienne’s steal and later scored a pair of offensive-
rebound baskets in providing her club with a 20-point margin. Etienne, a junior guard, accounted for 10 points,
a career-high nine assists and four steals.
“The intensity of their defense definitely got us rattled,” said UAlbany coach Trina Patterson, whose
team was held to a season-low point total and 30 percent from the field. “We had good team play at times, but
not for the full forty minutes. | am proud of this team and their effort. Hartford has very talented and athletic
@>: players. They just started to pound us in the second half.”
The Great Danes, who rallied to beat Binghamton, 64-57, in Friday’s quarterfinals, led 15-10 after
sophomore guard Britney McGee (9 points) canned a three-point field goal from the top of the arc midway
through the opening period. UAlbany used a couple of conventional three-point plays to grab the lead. TaNika
Thrower's steal led to Janea Aiken being fouled on a fastbreak layup. Freshman guard Amira Ford put her
team in front when Hartford’s Courtney Gomez was called for a blocking foul on a layup in transition.
The Hawks, who are receiving votes for the Associated Press Top 25 Poll, ran off nine straight markers
to go back ahead. Etienne nailed a 3-pointer from right of the key, before Hood sank an 18-foot jumper. After
UAlbany’s Gia Sanders made a steal and three-point play to close the gap to 19-18, Hartford scored seven
Straight points. Etienne drilled a three-point shot from the right corner. Delva then connected on a lob over the
top of the defense and scored after grabbing an offensive rebound for a 26-18 advantage.
Sanders, a 6-foot senior, had 11 of her 13 points in the opening half. Aiken, a freshman guard, scored
in double figures for the second straight game with 12. The Great Danes, who had won nine of 12 entering the
contest, were making their second-ever appearance in an America East semifinal.
“We lost because of the things we didn’t do, not just because of what Hartford did to us,” explained
Sanders, who added seven rebounds and three steals in her final game as a collegian. “They played a great
game and really pressured us with their defense. They would be in a zone and then switch to man-to-man and
throw us off.”

Caufield could not get off an attempt at the cage when he mishandled Jordan Levine’s pass from the midfield.
The Great Danes, who dropped their fourth straight one-goal decision, reversed a 3-2 deficit in the
second quarter to take a halftime lead. Steve Ammann, who had two goals and one assist, connected on a
drive from the left when his shot went off the goalkeeper’s stick. Caufield, a freshman, put his team ahead with
27.6 seconds left in the quarter by finishing off a fastbreak that originated on a save by Brett Queener in the
defensive half of the field.
The Dragons, whose lone loss came in the opener against Virginia, regained the lead with a pair of
goals 23 seconds apart in the third stanza. Colin Ambler, who scored twice, cut to the top of the crease to
convert a feed from Jon Van Houten in an extra-man situation. After winning the face-off, Kevin Dart bounced
©}. low shot into the left corner for a 5-4 advantage. UAlbany midfielder Kyle Crotty tied the contest with 5:41 left
in the stanza on an extra-man goal.
“We had opportunities but that’s the way it has been going to this point,” said UAlbany coach Scott
Marr, whose team hit the crossbar after winning the opening face-off in the first quarter. “We have lost to five
very good teams. Even though we could be sharper, | can’t fault our effort. Our movement on offense has not
translated from the practice field to the game.”
Drexel goalkeeper Bruce Bickford made eight of his nine saves in the opening half, while Queener
stopped seven shots. Caufield finished with one goal and two assists for the Great Danes, who had won their
home debut in each of the previous six seasons.

UALBANY RALLIES IN SECOND HALF IN A-EAST QUARTERFINAL WIN OVER BINGHAMTON
For Immediate Release For Further Information
March 14, 2008 Brian DePasquale / 518-442-3072
West Hartford, Conn. — Charity lromuanya recorded his first career double-double with 10 points and 10
rebounds, as UAlbany rallied in the second half for a 64-57 victory over Binghamton in the America East
Conference Championship’s quarterfinal round on Friday evening at the University of Hartford’s Chase Arena.
The Great Danes will meet top-seed and regular-season champion Hartford in the semifinals on Saturday at
5:00 p.m.
UAlbany (13-17) trailed by nine at the intermission and erased that hole with 12 consecutive points to
begin the second half. lromuanya ignited that run with a baseline drive, a steal that led to a fastbreak layup
and two free throws. Freshman guard Janea Aiken, who led her team with 14 points, hit a driving layup and
sank a pair of three throws for a 37-36 lead.
Binghamton’s Laura Sario, who had 16 points and seven rebounds, later drew her team even at 39
apiece with a three-point field goal from the left corner. But the Great Danes answered with 11 of the game’s
next 12 points. Iromuanya, who added four steals and two assists to her career-high rebound total, made a
three-pointer from the left wing to put her team ahead for good. Gia Sanders then scored in the lane off a
baseline feed from Kristin Higy. Sanders, a 6-foot senior who had 10 points, later made a foul-line jumper and
converted in the lane for a 50-40 lead midway through the period.
The Bearcats, the tournament's fifth seed who lost both regular-season meetings to UAlbany, would
eventually closed the gap to three on two occasions, including 56-53 with 3:27 left when Brianna Thompson, a
6'1” senior, made a turnaround bank shot. UAlbany’s Britney McGee answered that surge when she hit a 15-
@- jumper and finished off a fastbreak on consecutive possessions. Despite missing the front end of three
one-and-one free throw opportunities in the final minute, the Great Danes hung on to advance to the semifinal
round for the first time since 2004.
“lam so proud of the heart of this team,” said UAlbany coach Trina Patterson, whose squad has
reached the America East semifinals for just the second time since joining the conference in 2001-02. “There
was no rhyme or reason to how we won the game. We were on another level intensity-wise. We didn’t want to
go home. If we can keep the intensity this high or higher, we can be very dangerous this weekend.”
Binghamton (11-19) wiped out a nine-point deficit in the opening half with 12 unanswered. Erica Carter
drilled three consecutive 3-point shots, including a long-range jumper from the right wing, to tie the contest at
25 apiece. Sario, who had 10 first-half points, then nailed a three-pointer from the left wing to put her team
ahead. The Bearcats, who closed the period on a monster 20-2 run, held the tournament's fourth seed without
a field goal over the final six minutes of the stanza. Sario used the glass to can a pair of shots from left of the
lane before making one of two free throws for a 36-27 lead at the break. UAlbany held a nine-point cushion
twice in the first stanza despite shooting just 28.6 percent. Higy and TaNika Thrower made back-to-tack 3-
pointers for a 25-16 advantage.
“We know that if we lose one we’re done,” said lromuanya, a sophomore guard who did all of her
scoring after halftime and helped her team force 27 turnovers. “We have a great bunch of seniors that push
us. Defense wins games. Everyone committed (to that) in the first five minutes of the second half ... stay on
your man and help each other out.”
The Bearcats’ Laine Kurpniece, a first-team all-conference center, had 14 points anda career-high 15
rebounds, while Carter had 12 of her 14 points in the opening half. McGee finished with 11 points for the Great
Danes, who have won nine of their last 12 outings.

UALBANY’S TRINA PATTERSON NAMED AMERICA EAST CONFERENCE COACH OF THE YEAR
Gia Sanders & Kristin Higy Named to All-Conference Basketball Team
Springfield, Mass. — University at Albany head coach Trina Patterson has been named the 2008 America East
Conference Coach of the Year, as announced by the league office at the annual postseason tournament banquet held on
Thursday morning at the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. Senior forwards Gia Sanders and Kristin Higy, along
with freshman guard Janea Aiken, also earned all-conference accolades.
Patterson earned her first coach of the year award after guiding UAlbany to a 10-6 record in conference play, the
most wins in league competition for the Great Danes since joining the America East in 2001-02. After posting a 2-11
record in non-conference play, UAlbany started off regular-season league competition with two wins for the first time in
program history. Patterson, who changed her team’s style of play to include an up-tempo, speedy offense and a tenacious
pressure defense, led the Great Danes to five straight conference triumphs, including the program’s first-ever triumph at
Maine. UAlbany also posted wins at UMBC, Stony Brook and Binghamton and registered five league home victories.
“Coach Patterson is very deserving of this award,” UAlbany Vice President and Director of Athletics Lee McElroy
said. “Her staff and student-athletes have faced adversity and obstacles, including a tough non-conference schedule and
several close defeats. But her dedication and commitment as a coach helped meet these challenges and allowed the
program to set a conference record for wins and gain the highest seed ever for the championship tournament.”
Sanders, a 6-foot native of Bowie, Md., made her first appearance on the all-conference unit as a second-team
selection. She repeated as a member of the all-defensive team in a unanimous vote. Sanders is the first player since
Danielle Hutcheson in 2003-04 to be named to an all-conference team. Despite missing two games with an injury during
conference play, Sanders averaged 9.0 points per game and led the team in rebounding, averaging 6.9 caroms per
contest. Sanders, who became the program’s all-time blocks leader this season, also led the team with 1.92 steals and
1.52 blocks per game. Sanders, who has 150 career blocks, also stands seventh on UAlbany’s career rebounds chart with
16. She earned the first player of the week honor of her career on Feb. 11. Sanders also earned a spot on the all-
academic team after achieving a 3.19 cumulative grade point average in sociology.
Higy, who hails from Akron, Ohio, earned all-conference third-team recognition after leading the Great Danes for
the majority of the season, averaging 10.9 points per game. Higy, who is in her second season with UAlbany after
transferring from George Mason, also averaged 5.3 rebounds and led the team by shooting 43.4 percent from the floor.
Higy also led the conference in three-point percentage, hitting 38.4% of her shots from beyond the arc.
Aiken earned all-rookie team honors after averaging 8.0 points per game this season. Aiken, a 5-foot-9 guard
from St. Albans, N.Y., started the first two games of the season before becoming a key contributor off the bench. Aiken
recently made a return to the starting lineup, and scored 17 points in the Great Danes’ road win Binghamton. She
recorded a 40.7-percent shooting percentage and grabbed 1.8 rebounds per contest. Aiken, who becomes the first Great
Dane to earn all-rookie team honors, was named the conference’s rookie of the week on Feb. 11.
UAlbany (12-17, AE 10-6) will play fifth-seeded Binghamton (11-18, AE 9-7) in the quarterfinal round of the
America East Conference Championship on Friday, March 14 at 8:00 p.m.

Albany, N.Y. — Sophomore Kayla Best (Guilderland) tied a career-high with four goals, including three in the
first half, in leading UAlbany to a 12-9 non-conference victory over Colgate on Tuesday evening at John Fallon
Field.

Freshman Tee Ladouceur (Bethlehem Central), wno scored twice and had one assist, put her team ahead by
cutting to the top of the crease and placing Jane Bush’s pass from behind into the net. Best tallied back-to-
back goals 15 seconds apart. The all-conference midfielder sent a blast inside the left post while driving in the
middle of the zone. After Ladouceur won the following draw control, Best went to the cage and sent a low shot
past Colgate goalkeeper Sara Drexler. Jodi Battaglia capped that outburst by converting a free-position
attempt.

who had three goals, including her 16th of the season, sent a free-position opportunity into the lower left
corner. Colleen Bubnack then worked her way in from the right side and fired a low shot into the cage.

MASSACHUSETTS HOLDS OFF UALBANY, 9-8, IN MEN’S LACROSSE ACTION AT GARBER FIELD
Amherst, Mass. — Junior attack Tim Balise had three goals and one assist as Massachusetts held off UAlbany,
9-8, in non-league play on Tuesday afternoon at Garber Field. The two lacrosse teams battled to a one-goal
decision for the fifth consecutive year.
UMass (2-2) controlled the action for most of the way by winning 14 of 20 face-offs. The Minutemen,
who led 5-3 at halftime, opened up a four-goal lead in the third period. Senior defenseman Brian Danvers
scored her first career goal with the long pole after a defensive double-team led to a turnover by UAlbany’s
Jordan Levine. Belise gave his team a 7-3 advantage by driving from the left corner and placing a shot over
goalkeeper Brett Queener’s shoulder with 7:41 left in the quarter.
The Minutemen, who have made 17 NCAA appearances in their history and reached the national
championship game in 2006, kept its four-goal cushion midway through the final stanza when Fred Federico
connected on a blast in an extra-man situation.
UAlbany (0-4) rallied in the late stages by scoring three times in a one-minute-and-12 second span.
Derek Dale scored back-to-back goals, the first after Queener caused a turnover and the second after Levine
won the subsequent face-off. The Great Danes, who lost in triple-overtime to nationally-ranked Delaware three
days ago, closed the gap to 9-8 with 1:12 remaining. Corey Small converted after UMass’ Kevin Wright was
stripped of the ball by defender Mark Kelly as his team doubled the ball.
The Great Danes had two chances to draw even in the final minute but could get the equalizer. After
winning the draw following Small’s goal, Dale threw a pass that resulted in a turnover. Mike Ammann, a senior
midfielder, then intercepted UMass’ clearing attempt, but his twin brother Steve sent a shot high over the net
oii. 21 seconds on the clock.
Doc Schneider, an All-ECAC goalkeeper, made 16 saves for the Minutemen, who avenged last year’s
10-9 overtime loss at John Fallon Field. Freshman Zach Rogers added one goal and two assists. UAlbany’s
Levine totaled two goals and two assists as his team has opened the season with four consecutive losses for
the first time as a Division | program.

UALBANY RALLIES IN SECOND HALF FOR 10-7 NON-LEAGUE VICTORY OVER LE MOYNE
Albany, N.Y. — Stacey Brown and Christine Grueniger each had three goals and one assist as UAlbany rallied
in the final period for a 10-7 non-league win over Le Moyne on Sunday afternoon at John Fallon Field.
Le Moyne (2-3) constructed a 7-2 halftime advantage behind the play of Whitney Vecchio and Kylie
Rosette, who combined for five goals in the opening thirty minutes. Vecchio, an All-Metro Atlantic Athletic
Conference attacker, gave her team a 5-2 lead with 11:07 remaining before the intermission when she came
from behind to catch Lisa McCarthy’s feed and score from the left side. Rebekah Elmer and Vecchio later
found the net one minute and 15 seconds apart in building a five-goal margin. Elmer and Vecchio each
converted free-position opportunities.
In the second half, Grueniger tallied back-to-back goals to begin her team’s run of eight unanswered.
The sophomore attack scored from the top of crease off Brown’s pass from the left and then hit an empty net in
a free-position situation. Freshman Tee Ladouceur (Bethlehem Central), who did all of her scoring in the final
stanza with three goals, tied the contest at seven apiece with 10:44 remaining. She converted a drive by
switching to her left hand and shooting across her body.
Kayla Best (Guilderland) gave UAlbany (3-2) its first lead one minute and eight seconds later when she
hauled in Grueniger’s right-to-left crossing pass and netted her ninth goal of the season. Ladouceur gave the
Great Danes a 9-7 cushion when she cut to the top of left crease to deposit Jane Bush’s pass from behind the
cage. Brown, who posted career-highs in goals and points, added an insurance tally with 4:36 to play.
“We were very flat and tentative and played not to make a mistake in the first half,” said UAlbany coach
Lindsey Hart, who saw both teams battle 20-plus mile-per-hour winds and a temperature that hovered in the
6: 30's. “We were able to dominate the draw, make shorter passes and shoot better in the second half. Le
Moyne played with a lot of heart and we needed to raise our level.”
Rosette, a senior attack, finished with two goals and one assist for the Dolphins, who won last year’s
MAAC title and earned an NCAA berth. Goalkeeper Samantha Falcone made 11 saves. UAlbany’s Katie
Neer stopped eight shots, including six in the final stanza.

BOSTON U. RECORDS OVERTIME WIN OVER UALBANY IN AMERICA EAST QUARTERFINAL
Vestal, N.Y. — Carlos Strong had 17 points off the bench and John Holland added 16 in leading Boston
University to a 68-64 victory over UAlbany in the quarterfinal round of the America East Conference on
Saturday evening at Binghamton University’s Events Center. The Terriers, wno have won nine of their last 11
contests, will meet No. 2 seed Hartford in the semifinals.
Boston U. (14-16) led 52-47 with 3:10 left in the regulation when Strong beat the shot clock with a
three-point field goal from right of the key. UAlbany (15-15) sliced the deficit to 54-53 on two free throws by
Brian Lillis, a 6-foot-5 senior who led all scorers with 24 points. After BU’s Corey Lowe split a pair of foul shots,
the Great Danes’ Jon lati tied the contest at 56 apiece on a 3-pointer from the top of the arc with 9.9 seconds
to play. The Terriers failed to get off a shot in the closing seconds.
In the extra period, Boston U. took a quick 60-56 advantage when Lowe tipped in his own miss and
converted a driving bank shot. The Great Danes, who won both regular-season meetings between the teams,
later got within 66-64 on Lillis’ two foul shots. But Tyler Morris and Holland each made one of two from the line
in the final 13 seconds to preserve the lead.
“l’m extremely proud of the toughness that our kids showed in this game,” said BU coach Dennis Wolff,
whose squad was eliminated by UAlbany in last year’s semifinal round. “That team has been extremely tough,
and we have not been able to match that in the recent games with them.”
UAlbany used a 10-3 run to take a 19-10 lead midway through the first half. lati, who 16 points, canned
a three-point field goal from the left corner off an in-bounds pass to complete that stretch. The Great Danes
moved out to a 29-19 margin when Lillis converted a baseline drive and made a pair of free throws. However,
@": Terriers, the tournament’s sixth seed, turned up their defensive effort holding the third seed without a field
goal over the final seven-plus minutes of the period. Meanwhile, Strong, who had 12 first half points, drilled
two three-pointers during that span. His long-range shot from the left corner beat the buzzer to end the half
and close the gap to 30-29.
“| really thought the winner of this game could win this whole thing,” said UAlbany coach Will Brown,

UALBANY UPENDS BOSTON UNIVERSITY, 76-64, INREGULAR-SEASON FINALE AT SEFCU ARENA
Albany, N.Y. — Freshman guard Josh Martin had 13 points off the bench to pace four players in double figures
in leading UAlbany to a 76-64 America East Conference victory over Boston University in the regular-season
finale for both teams on Sunday afternoon at SEFCU Arena. The Great Danes finished in a tie for second
place in the conference standings heading into next weekend’s postseason tournament.
Boston U. (13-16, AE 9-7) tied the contest at 48 apiece midway through the second half on John
Holland’s turnaround from left of the lane. UAlbany (15-14, AE 10-6) responded with 12 of the game’s next 14
points to go ahead for good. Martin canned one of his three 3-point field goals from the left wing, before
freshman center Al Turley scored on a spinning shot in the lane. Martin, who tied a career-high with six
assists, added a three-pointer and a driving layup following an offensive rebound during the decisive run. Jon
lati gave his team a 60-50 advantage with a 16-foot jumper off a screen.
The Great Danes, who also won the first meeting of the season between these teams on Jan. 16, still
led 62-54 with less then five minutes remaining, but ran off seven unanswered to seal the outcome. Brent
Wilson, one of three seniors playing in his final home game, nailed a three-pointer from left of the key. Martin,
who also grabbed five rebounds, fed Brett Gifford and added a pair of free throws for a 15-point cushion.
“We found a way to get it down with (Brian) Lillis on the bench,” said UAlbany coach Will Brown, whose
top scorer was plagued by foul trouble and played just 14 minutes. “Josh Martin had a great day, especially
when you consider he had no turnovers. It’s no secret we have not played well at home; we’ve been like the
(New York) Giants where we only play well on the road.”
iped out a 16-11 deficit with 12 consecutive points. Turley, who scored a career-best 11 on 4-of-5 shooting,
made a conventional three-point play when he was fouled on a high-low exchange from Wilson for a 23-16
lead. The Terriers, who had won eight of their last nine entering the contest, fought back to tie the contest at
30-all when Carlos Strong canned a 3-point shot from the top of the arc.
In the second half, UAlbany opened up a 42-37 cushion as Tim Ambrose converted a drive on the left
baseline. The Terriers drew even when Holland buried a 3-pointer from the left corner off a skip pass and then
tied the count again at 46 apiece on Corey Lowe’s long-range jumper. Lowe, the conference’s second-leading
scorer, finished with 23 points and made four 3-pointers.
Strong was the only other BU player in double figures with 13 points, while Holland, a 6-foot-5
freshman, had nine points and six rebounds. Brian Connelly and lati each had 10 points for the Great Danes,
who have won four of their last five league games.
“We had two good wins at the end of the year,” said lati, a fifth-year senior who was honored in pre-
game ceremony. “With Lillis in foul trouble, the bench gave us a lift and played within the rotation. The young
guys were trying to get a win for the seniors.”
e. The game featured seven lead changes and five ties through the opening thirty minutes. UAlbany

KAYLA BEST SCORES FOUR GOALS AS UALBANY DEFEATS OVER MARIST IN HOME OPENER
Albany, N.Y. — Kayla Best had four goals and Jodi Battaglia and Tee Ladouceur (Bethlehem) scored three
times in leading UAlbany to a 15-6 victory over Marist in the Great Danes’ home opener on Saturday evening
at John Fallon Field. The non-league game was originally scheduled to be played in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., but
was moved due to poor field conditions.
Marist (0-1) took a 3-2 lead midway through the first half when Kate Noftsaker found an empty net after
UAlbany goalkeeper Katie Neer dropped the ball on a clearing attempt. The Great Danes, who fell to
nationally-ranked North Carolina in its 2008 debut one week ago, rattled off five unanswered over the next 10
minutes. Best, a sophomore midfielder, tied the contest on a second-chance opportunity from the right side,
before Nikki Branchini (Guilderland) found the lower corner 34 seconds later to put her team ahead.
UAlbany (1-1) added three more goals in the run. Ladouceur finished off a pass from behind the cage
by Jane Bush. Christine Grueninger tallied the first of her two goals when she split three defenders on a drive.
Stacey Brown found the net after cutting to the top of the crease following a restart for a 7-3 advantage.
The Great Danes, who have won six of nine home openers as a Division | program, pulled away by
scoring three times in a three-minute span early in the second half. Battaglia, who netted a pair in the final
period, placed a shot inside the left post, before Grueniger one-timed Brown’s pass from the left side. Rory
Redmond provided her team with a six-goal lead when Battaglia caused a turnover in Marist’s defensive end of
the field.
After Marist closed within 10-6 with 15:53 remaining, Battaglia and Ladouceur ended the threat by
connecting on back-to-back goals. Battaglia, an All-America selection on the high school level last year, cut to
he top of crease to take in Bush’s feed. Ladouceur, a freshman, fired a free-position shot through the
goalkeeper’s legs.
“| thought we got off to a slow start,” said Best, who tied a career-high in goals and extended her
scoring streak to 15 consecutive games. “We started working together and handled the ball much better. Our
quickness and ability to dominate the draw controls have been strengths for us to this point.”
Ali Carnabuci had one goal and one assist for the Red Foxes, who were voted to capture the Metro
Atlantic Athletic Conference title in the coaches’ preseason poll after posting a 10-6 record last season.
Goalkeeper Liz Burkhard made 13 saves. UAlbany’s Neer turned aside 10 shots.

a play from in close on the right side after taking a Derek Dale’s pass from behind the cage. Small, who had
three goals, tied the contest with 50 seconds left. Steve Ammann drove to the midfield of the field before
feeding Small who sent a blast into the net.

his backhand in beating goalkeeper Brett Queener to the left side. UAlbany’s Jordan Levine had his last-
second attempt deflected in an effort to send the game to an extra period.
