The University at Albany volleyball team claimedits second America East Confer-
enceChampionshipinthelastthreeyearslast season, andbecame the first UAlbany
program tohost.a Division NCAA Tournament event. The Great Danes became the
firstteaminconferencehistorytoclaimthreestraightregular-seasonchampionships
and earned the right to host the conference tournament for the third consecutive

season.

However, head coach Kelly Sheffield faces the prospect of having to replace four
integral seniors, all of whom left indelible marks on the UAlbany record books. Blair
Buchanan, the first player in Division | history to earn her conference's player and
setter ofthe yearhonorin three straight seasons, Shelby Goldman, athree-timeall-
conferencefirst-teammemberandthe school's career kills leader, Ashley DeNeal,an
ECAC Merit Award winner and UAlbany’s career digs leader, and Kristin Fiorillo,
whorecorded the seventh-best single season digs total, all wrapped up stellarfour-
year careers for the Great Danes.

UAlbanylosteightplayersinall, but Sheffield broughtinarecruitingclassofseven
newcomers, including fivefreshmenandtwosophomoretransfers,inanattemptto
replace the talent lost after the 2006 season.

“When youloseeight players, including five starters, there’s obviouslya learning
process thata team needs togo through,‘said Sheffield, whois entering hisseventh
seasonat the helm ofthe UAlbany program.”However, this team and program are
here to win championships. We'll be young, but we'll be talented as well”

The most experienced position will be in the middle. Returning to the court for
the Great Danes will be senior middle blocker Ashley Crenshaw, who was an all-
conference first-team member ayearago, andjuniormiddle hitter KamishaKellam,
who earned all-conference second-team accolades as a sophomore. Crenshaw,
who has the chance tobe the first playerin America East history to win fourstraight
regular-season titles, was second on the team last season with 3.02 kills per game
and 0.88 blocks per game.

“Ashley has started for us the past two years,’said Sheffield.”She stayedin
Albany this summer and worked out with our strength staff and did alot of
playing. think thatreally has helped her confidenceandIthinksheisready
to help lead this team to another big year”

Kellam, wholedtheconferencewith 1.35blockspergame,
producedthethird-best single-season blockstotalin UAI-
bany annals with 163 as a sophomore. She also finished
secondin the conference with a..290 hitting percentage
and recorded 2.13 kills per game.

“Kamishaisthe most physically dominatingnet player
in the conference,’ offered Sheffield. “She puts up a
hugeblockandisreally startingtotunintooneofthetop
blockersin the country. |fshe comesin with an aggressive mindset, consistently, of
wanting to own the other team, she could have a great season”

Also returning for the Great Danes is senior right side hitter Natasha Marquis.
Marquis, who playedher first season for UAlbany last season after transferring from
Butte College, saw limited playing timeas a junior, but Sheffield feels she could be
an influential team member on and off the court.

“Natasha probablyhadthemostimproved spring ofanyone.We'vebeen looking
for leaders to help with the young group coming in, and she’s taken the bull by the
horns and beena great example. Natashais going tobein the mixon the right side
and will give us depth in the middle, but will definitely need to be aleader that our
team can look to”

Joining the returning members will be freshman middle hitter Casey Wright, a
6-2 local product from Ballston Spa, N.Y.

“Casey just might be the best athlete on the team/'said Sheffield.”She’s raw, but
she learns very quickly and doesn’t have any fear. Someday, Ithinkshe's going to be
agreat player forthe Danes. How quickly she plays for uswill dependon her getting
stronger and her ability to learn and play a faster game”

Fournewcomerswillbecompetingforplayingtime,ledby transfersKateEckhardt
and Valerie Sourbeer. Eckhardt, a 6-0 outside/middle hitter from Ottawa, Ontario,
joinsthe Great Danesfrom Martin Methodist University, and could seeplayingtime
at several different positions.

“Kate's strength is her versatility and volleyball IQ” said Sheffield. “She has the
potential to play left, middle, right or in the backcourt for us. So many players can
onlydoonething well onthe court, soit’s going tobe great havinga player thathas
acomplete game”

Sourbeer, a6-1 outside hitter from Valley Center, Calif,, played at University of
Pacific before joining the UAlbany program.

“Valerie givesusgreatsizeand powerontheoutside.Shemadeacommitment
tocomeinearly overthe summer toworkon herstrength, and think that's really
going tohelpherout. She’sa player that’sjust goingto continue to get betterand
better as she gets stronger”

Freshmen Teresa Coppiellie, a6-1 outside hitter from Canton, Michigan, hails
from the same high school as former UAlbany great Jill Dombrowski.

“Teresa will be able to score points for us right away with her serve,’ offered
Sheffield.“Offensively she can doallot, and probably her best swing isa second
temposetin the middle of the court. We haven't hada player that can doallot of,
that effectively, so that can give usa very different lookif she is out on the court.

Classmate Amanda Cowdrey’s a 5-11 outside hitter from Brampton, Ontario.
Cowdrey brings a multitude of experience to the court for the Great Danes.

“Amanda has very solid ball controlandhas every shotin the book”said Shef-
field.“She plays indoors, outdoors, coaches and officiates - she is an absolute
volleyball junkie and will have an immediate impact for us’

UAlbany will look to replace one of the most prominentathletes in program
history at the setter position. Buchanan, the school's career assists leader anda
two-time All America honorable mention selection, wrapped up her four-year
careerlast seasonwithher third consecutive playerandsetter ofthe year honors.
Sheffieldhastwosettersontherosterthisseason,insophomorereturnerSamantha

“Samhadawholespringofworkingwiththereturninghittersandreallyshowed

emergedasoneoftheteam’stopblockerslastseason."Nobody worksharderthan
Sam and nobody is a bigger competitor”

Stanley, a 5-9 setter, joins the Great Danes after a stellar career at West Hen-
derson High School in Hendersonville, N.C.

“Brookes simply a winner’ Sheffield said. Her club and high school
teamswereusuallyalotsmallerandnotastalentedasthe teamsthatthey
were facing, butthey did an awful lot of winning. She understands what
it takes to win - and that’s what you want and need from a setter.”
On the defensive side of things, the Great Danes have
returner Laura Livergood, who saw limited action as a
freshman, and newcomer Tawny Dahmes.

Dahmesisa 5-9 libero from Chaska, Minn. and
wasamemberoftwo Minnesota State Championship
teams.

“Tawny is a stud in the backcourt, said Shef-
field.”She has played on one of the best teamsin the
nation the past twoyears. Not only does she keep balls
offthe floor, she puts up a ball that is very friendly for the setter. She will bea fan
favorite, no doubt”

Sheffield will ook to Livergood for defensive backup, as wellasleadershipon
and off the court.

“Lauradidnotgetalotofplayingtimeforustastyear, buthadaverynicespring”
offered Sheffield.”She is a great example and leader for the rest of the team of
whatitisliketo beagreat teammate. Qualities like Laura'sarehowchampionships
are built”

The Great Danes will kick off the season at the Hilton Garden Inn Invitational
at Northern Arizona University. UAlbany willalso playin tournaments at Buffalo,
Pennand Virginia Commonwealth, as wellas hosting theannual UAlbany Invita-
tional with Eastern Michigan, Northeastern and Brown.

“Our pre-conference schedule will be very challenging, and one reason will
be because ofall the travel,’said Sheffield.” This team will criss-cross the country
