AARNIO
Head Coach
10th Season
San Diego State ‘78
Johan Aarnio begins his 10th season as the head coach of the University at Albany men’s soccer program. He has led the Great Danes to the America
East Conference tournament four times in the past five seasons. Under his tutelage, the Great Danes have posted 72 victories and their first-ever America
East regular-season crown in 2004. In addition to producing the school's first Division | All-American this past fall, twenty-one of his players have combined
to earn 18 all-conference and eight all-rookie honors by America East, including a program-record six honorees in 2008.
Aarnio, who also has over 20 years of professional coaching experience in all pro leagues in the United States and Canada, guided the Great Danes
toa 12-4-2 record in 2004 and the program's first-ever America East regular-season title. He matched that mark in 2008, as the Great Danes’ nine-win im-
provement was tied for third in the nation. Furthermore, UAlbany's seven-game unbeaten streak, before suffering a 1-0 double overtime loss to Binghamton
in the semifinal round of the conference tournament, was a program standard in the club's Division | history.
Aarnio has coached two players who have been drafted or signed by Major League Soccer clubs. Steward Ceus, the program's first All-America recipi-
ent at any level since 1991, became the first Great Dane to be drafted by an MLS franchise when he was selected 37th overall by the Colorado Rapids. In
2006, Bouna Coundoul became UAlbany’s first soccer player to play professionally, and was a regular starter for the Colorado Rapids for three seasons. In
the winter of 2007, he was selected to play as a member of the Senegal national team in the African Cup of Nations hosted by Ghana. Ceus and Coundoul
combined to win the conference's goalkeeper of the year honor three times.
In the professional ranks, Aarnio was the head coach and director of team operations for the Milwaukee Wave of the National Professional Soccer
League (NPSL) from 1990-92. Aarnio also served as head coach of the NPSL’s Montreal Impact in 1997. In addition, he was a part of six professional
championships as an assistant coach with the San Diego Sockers of the NASL and MISL during the 1980s.
Aarnio also served as the head coach of the men’s and women’s soccer teams at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute from 1992-97. He led the men's
program to a pair of NCAA Division II! Tournament appearances. His 1996 team posted a 14-3 record and won the Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association
championship. As women's head coach, the Red Hawks were a combined 32-12-3 over a three-year period and captured the 1996 ECAC Mid-Atlantic title
with a 16-1 record. He also coached the Olympic Development Program (ODP) in Region 1
Aarnio earned a bachelor’s degree in marketing from San Diego State University in 1978, where he was a two-year varsity midfielder for the Aztecs. A
native of Rancagua, Chile, Aarnio is conversational in Spanish, Italian, French and English.

Erik DiLorenzo
Assistant Coach
Erik DiLorenzo, a four-year starter and two-time
captain of the UAlbany program from 2005-08,
returns to his alma mater to begin his first season
as an assistant coach.
DiLorenzo anchored the Great Dane defense
throughout his career and helped the program
make three appearances in the America East
Conference championship while blanking 24 op-
ponents. Offensively, he registered four goals and 10 assists for 18 points.
In addition to being a catalyst for UAlbany's nine-win improvement last fall,
a mark which tied for third nationally, DiLorenzo was named to the National
Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) All-Northeast Region Third
‘Team. Furthermore, he was the first defender since George Friedman in 2004
to garner a spot on America East's all-conference second team. The captain
was a two-time member of the league's all-championship squad and was an
all-rookie team selection as a freshman in 2005.
DiLorenzo, a native of Bolton, Ontario, has actively been working as a
coach at youth soccer camps run by the Bolton Wanderers, Ottawa Fury and
Toronto Lynx over the past six summers for kids ranging between the ages
of five and 15 years old. Last year, he ran training sessions for the Bolton
Wanderers’ under-17 boys’ team.
A four-year member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee who was
also a member of the America East Commissioner's Academic Honor Roll,
DiLorenzo graduated with a bachelor's degree in accounting in 2009.
Jason Ramundo
Volunteer Assistant Coach
Jason Ramundo begins his first season at UAI-
bany where he oversees the training and develop-
ment of the Great Dane goalkeepers.
A three-year varsity starter from nearby Colonie
High School, Ramundo played collegiate soccer
at SUNY Cobleskill. He later advanced to the
professional ranks for five years with the Albany
Alleycats and New York Capital District Shockers
of the USISL and PDL, respectively.
Ramundo is currently ranked as one of the top indoor goalkeepers in
the Premier Arena Soccer League (PASL), where he has led the New York
Shockers to nationals five times. In addition, Ramundo has earned gold and
silver medals playing for Adirondack at the New York Empire State Games.
The volunteer assistant also served as a player/assistant coach for the
Albany Admirals of the Premier Development League (PDL) where he was
responsible for conducting team practices, developing game day lineups
and scouting opponents. Furthermore, he played six matches for the squad
in goal.
Ramundo has been on staff with the Eastern New York Olympic Develop-
ment Program (ODP) since 2005 where he serves as the goalkeeping coach.
Additionally, he currently coaches with the Albany Alleycats Premier club and

2009 SEASON OUTLOOK
The University at Albany men's soccer program finished second in the America East Conference standings last year
before its season ended abruptly with a heartbreaking 1-0 double overtime loss to Binghamton in the semifinal round
of the league tournament. Head coach Johan Aarnio, who enters his 10th season, hopes the Great Danes can take
another leap forward in 2009.
“Our goals have always been to be competitive, finish in the top third of the conference, make the playoffs and
instrumentally always reach for the next step,” Aarnio explained. “That would mean making the NCAA Tournament by
winning the conference or earning an at-large bid.”
UAlbany posted a 12-4-2 overall record last year, which matched a Division | program record set in 2004, despite
being picked to finish eighth among nine teams in the preseason coaches poll. The team’s nine-win improvement tied
for third in the nation with Fairleigh Dickinson, only trailing Maryland (13) and St. John’s (10). In addition, the Great
Danes’ seven-game unbeaten streak before falling to Binghamton at home in the conference tournament was a pro-
gram standard in the club’s Division | history.
“We showed last year that we can play with anybody,” Aario added. “We were able to score goals, which was a
major difficulty for us in 2007.”
UAlbany almost quadrupled its scoring output last season and finished fifth nationally in goals per game. The squad
was able to do this in a league which featured the sixth-best RPI in the country among the 23 conferences. Only the
Atlantic Coast, Big East, Big 10, Big West and Ivy League were better. However, Aarnio realizes there will be holes to
fill with the graduation of four all-conference selections, two all-region picks and an All-American.
“Our biggest challenge will be to rebuild our defense with the graduation (and departure) of several veterans,” Aa-_ Claudio Dantas was the America
mio explained. “We have recruited to do so in our incoming class of nine student-athletes of which five can play in the East striker of the year in 2008.
back. We hope to add punch to our front as well and have others step up to contribute along with the lethal force we already have in Claudio Dantas, Shaun
Kane and Bozidar Jelovac.”
To prepare for America East play, Aario and the other seven America East coaches have assembled demanding schedules abound with opponents that
reached last year's NCAA Tournament or finished with a winning season. UAlbany's schedule features four NCAA Tournament teams and not a single non-
conference match against a club that ended the fall with a losing record.
“Itis a conference standard to schedule strong so we have the opportunity to send multiple teams to the NCAAs,” stated Aarnio, recalling the mutual goal
was attained in 2007 when Boston University punched an at-large ticket. “I have seen this conference go from as low as 17th or 18th to sixth in the country
among 23 leagues in the RPI rankings. To be up there as the sixth conference in the country is a combination of proper scheduling and getting results. We
have a strong schedule, and hopefully we will get the outcomes we need to help us make the national tournament for the first time.”
FORWARDS
“Your goalkeeper is arguably 50 percent of your team, but you always need to have scoring if you want to be successful. You've got to have depth with qual-
ity up front, and | think we do with Claudio Dantas, Shaun Kane and Bozidar Jelovac. Claudio and Shaun have proven themselves, and Bozidar is going to
be tremendous," Aarnio said.
UAlbany, which had the best one-two scoring punch in America East and averaged a league-best 2.17 goals per game in 2008, more than tripled its
scoring and ranked fifth nationally in the category. The squad will have even more firepower on its front line this fall.
Dantas, a two-time junior college All-American, was the first player in program history to be named the America East striker of the year in 2008. He paced
the offense with nine goals and 10 assists. His 28 points led America East and were a Division I single-season program record. The nine goals matched the
Division | single-season standard, and his 10 assists equaled the single-season standard for all divisions.
Kane, who has three years of eligibility remaining, finished with eight goals and three assists for 19 points in 15 appearances. He was second in the
conference in goals per game and third in points per game. Kane also netted a team-best three game-winning goals, and added a hat trick in the 3-0 win
over Siena. The sophomore should be a strong candidate for the all-conference first team.
Jelovac, who has two years of eligibility, will look to make an immediate impact as another scoring threat. Standing 6-foot-3, the member of Serbia &
Montenegro's under-17 and under-19 national teams practiced with the Great Danes over the past two seasons. He is extremely strong, fast and mobile
according to Aarnio.
Veteran Joe Hogan, along with newcomer David Hawksworth, will also be relied on to contribute this fall.
MIDFIELDERS
“Although we have a number of guys who we know can get the job done up front, it is going to be about our chemistry
through the midfield and how we play in this area that will be a major part of our success. We will have good depth in
our midfield,” Aarnio said.
The midfield has been depleted with the losses of Gaby Seguin-Gauthier and Don Johnson, both second-team all-
conference selections, to graduation. However, Aarnio is still optimistic about the depth he has to work with in an area
which has always been solid.
Returning players lan Peach and Milos Jankovic are expected to lead the way at this position. Peach, an all-rookie
selection in 2007, registered two goals and four assists for eight points last season after netting just one goal and two
points as a freshman. Jankovic, who is more defensive-minded, has been a two-year starter. Prior to joining the Great
Danes, Jankovic played on the Serbian U-17 and U-19 national squads with Jelovac.
Aarnio is also expecting to get strong efforts from Sander Anker, voted the team's most improved player in 2008, as
well as Anthony DeSalvo, an athlete who has rapidly developed particularly this past spring. Returners Darko Knezevic
and Andrew Fojanesi along with newcomers Eric Chernyakhovsky and Adi Radoncic will also see time.
Konner McNamara, an all-rookie
selection last year, will be relied
upon to lead a young defense.
ie 2009 UALBANY | 5 | MEN’S SOCCER %¢@
DEFENDERS
“We have recruited good defenders, and we have recruited speed. The incoming players have the quality and the speed we need, but it remains to be seen
how they fit in and how it will all work out. Dylan Clements and Vojisiav Petkovic can all play there, but there are also players returning that are up for the task
and we expect big things out of due to their development,” Aarnio said.
Erik DiLorenzo, currently an assistant coach, anchored UAlbany's defense for four years. Mikael McNamara, who made 53 starts, graduated, and an-
other starter will not return. With all-rookie squad selection Konner McNamara the only returning starter on this year's roster, Aarnio’s staff recruited heavily
to fill the voids.
‘Aarnio is keeping a close eye on junior David Burke, one of the Capital Region's premier defenders when he played at Shenendehowa, who has sig-
nificantly improved over his two years with the squad. Dylan Clements, a transfer from SUNY Cobleskill, and Voji Petkovic will all contend for starting spots
among the newcomers. lan Berger, Rikkert Pilaar, Jordan Zaprowski, David Pinto, Sean Traverso and Connor Walsh will also fight for time.
GOALKEEPERS
“Adrian Foncette is an excellent goalkeeper with a very good understanding of all the little details of the game. He has proven and shown that he will be our
starter this year. Christian Mejia will be a good backup for Adrian and understands his role. If something were to happen to Adrian, Christian will be very
capable to step in,” Aarnio said.
Adrian Foncette will have some big shoes to fill this fall with the departure of Steward Ceus, an All-American and four-year starter who was chosen with
the 37th pick in the 2009 Major League Soccer Draft by the Colorado Rapids. Even though he made just a few starts as a freshman, Aarnio believes the
sophomore is up to the challenge.
Last season, Foncette started four matches and eared three shutouts. He never surrendered a goal when the Great Danes were at even strength. San
Diego State was the only team to get anything by Foncette in his freshman campaign, and all of the goals came when the Great Danes were playing a man
down since a red card was issued to a defender in the opening minute of play. He ended the year with a .769 save percentage and a 1.50 goals against
average. Christian Mejia, a transfer from Dominican (N.Y.) with three years of eligibility, will be ready to take over when needed.
SCHEDULE
“Every conference match is a battle and very competitive. It is a rivalry with everyone. The key for us will be to prepare well and stay healthy so we can use
the depth we have,” Aarnio said.
UAlbany will arguably play its most grueling schedule since upgrading to Division | in 1999. The 16-match slate includes four teams that advanced to last
year’s NCAA Tournament. The Great Danes’ nine non-conference matches to begin the 2009 campaign features six teams that advanced to their conference
championship match and three that won a league title to clinch an NCAA automatic berth last year. In addition, each of the nine squads posted a winning
percentage of .500 or better in 2008.
The Great Danes open the fall at home against Northeastern on Tuesday, Sept. 1 at 4 p.m. The Huskies posted a record of 7-5-9 last year, falling to
George Mason, 1-0, in the Colonial Athletic Association championship match.
The following weekend, UAlbany will compete in a tournament hosted by Coastal Carolina along with Virginia Commonwealth. The Great Danes will face
VCU on Sept. 4 and Coastal Carolina, the runner-up team in the Big South Conference after suffering a double-overtime defeat in the league title match, on
Sept. 6.
The Great Danes will return home for a pair of games against two squads that competed in the 2008 NCAA Tournament. UAlbany will host Colgate of the
Patriot League on Friday, Sept. 11 and Fairfield of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference on Sunday, Sept. 13. Both matches are slated to kick off at 4 p.m.

Year, became the first Great Dane to compete
professionally when he signed with the Colo-
rado Rapids of Major League Soccer. He made
his debut on May 13, 2006 and recorded a shut-
out a week later in his first career start. A native
of Senegal, he has also competed with his na-
tional team at the 2007 African Cup of Nations.
Entering the 2009 MLS season, his 1.16 goals
against average was ranked as the second-best
in MLS history, while his 73.5 percent save per-
centage was fifth all-time. Coundoul, who has
used, “It's Bouna time!” as a personal motto to
excite fans, most recently signed a contract with
the New York Red Bulls on June 24, 2009.
