UALBANY FOOTBALL DROPS 35-14 DECISION TO #2 MONTANA

Missoula, Mont. — Cole Bergquist passed for two touchdowns and ran for another score in leading Montana,
the nation's second-ranked team, to a 35-14 victory over UAlbany before 23,097 fans on Saturday afternoon at
Washington-Grizzly Stadium.

Bergquist, who passed for 283 yards and ran for 89 more, broke open a tight game in the third quarter
when he scored on a 55-yard option run over left tackle for a 21-7 lead. He then engineered a 76-yard march
in the fourth quarter, including a 24-yard middle screen pass into UAlbany territory. Lex Hilliard, who rushed
for 136 yards and two TDs, later rumbled 26 yards to paydirt with 9:53 to play.

UAlbany (1-3) closed the gap by answering with a 10-play scoring drive. Vinny Esposito, who
completed 20 of 40 passes for 273 yards, the sixth-best total in school history, fired a 23-yard touchdown strike
to Jason Smith. The Great Danes, who playing before the largest crowd in the program's history, then
recovered an on-side kick. But cornerback Jeremy Pate intercepted Esposito's pass to the sideline at the
Grizzlies’ 16 to end the threat. Bergquist added a 30-yard touchdown throw with 1:51 remaining to complete
the scoring. Montana (3-0) could move to the top of the rankings as Appalachian State was beaten earlier in
the day.

“They are an excellent team,” said UAlbany head coach Bob Ford, whose team lost All-America
linebacker Colin Disch to a knee sprain on the second play of the game. “They are very hard to defend
because they can run inside and outside and spread the ball with that quarterback to a multitude of receivers.
We tried to do some (different) things as the underdog, but they gradually wore us down. We played as hard

@ we could and their fans appreciated the effort with an ovation as we left the field."

UAlbany came to play in the first quarter against the nationally-ranked Grizzlies. Esposito hooked up
with Daniel Bocanegra on a 46-yard flea-flicker on the Great Danes' second offensive play, but Jason Fralicker
missed a 31-yard field goal to the left of the upright.

Montana took a 7-0 lead on its third series, when Bergquist led a three-play, 58-yard drive. Berguaist, a
6-foot-2 junior, connected with wide receiver Eric Allen on a 38-yard play down the middle of the defense. He
fired a 12-yard scoring pass to Ryan Bagley with 4:35 left in the period.

“They have great athletic talent, especially (Kroy) Biermann coming off the edge,” said Esposito. “They
really play together, come after you wave after wave, and swarm to the football. It came down to situations
where they made the big play."

The Great Danes stopped punter Tyson Johnson on a fourth-down run off a fake at midfield to set up
their touchdown midway through the second quarter. The scoring march was kept alive when Montana's
Severin Campbell was called for a roughing-the-punter penalty. Esposito then flipped a 22-yard pass to Colin
Simmons in the left flat to set up first-and- goal at the Grizzlies 2. Omar Johnson would score from one yard
out over left tackle on fourth down.

After Bergquist threw an interception inside the UAlbany 5-yard line, the Montana signal-caller led his
team on a short six-play drive that put his team ahead 14-7 with 1:49 left before halftime. Hilliard reached the
end zone on a one-yard blast over the right side.

"As a senior, | really looked forward to playing in this game,” said Wall, who recovered the on-side kick
and also had a 64-yard quick kick on special teams. “The non-league games are just as important, but this first

part (of the schedule) has helped us find our identity. We kept playing today no matter what happened. | have
confidence in our team."

#19 Hofstra 28, Albany 13

Albany, N.Y. — Quarterback Bryan Savage ran for two touchdowns and passed for another in
leading Hofstra, the nation’s 19th-ranked team, to a 28-13 victory over UAlbany in the Great
Danes’ home opener at University Field.

UAlbany (1-2) grabbed a 3-0 lead on its opening possession with a well-executed 18-
play, 64-yard drive. Vinny Esposito, a junior quarterback, mixed the run and pass in a sequence
that led to Jason Fralicker’s 31-yard field goal. Esposito, wno completed 15 of 29 passes for
131 yards, converted three third-down plays with two passes and a run to the Hofstra 6-yard
line.

The Pride, who were coming off a season-opening win against No. 9 Furman, then took
the lead on the following kickoff when Kareem Huggins broke through the middle and sprinted
98 yards to the end zone. Hofstra (2-0) then marched 84 yards to paydirt on its next offensive
possession. Savage rifled a 25-yard completion to wide receiver Charles Sullivan deep into
UAlbany territory, before scoring on a 20-yard option run around right end for a 14-3 lead.

Savage, a transfer from Coffeyville Community College in Kansas who was making his
second career start, guided his team on a 55-yard touchdown drive to end the second quarter.
He hit tight end Phil Riley with a 21-yard pass in the middle of the defense. Savage would then
sneak over from one-yard out with 16 seconds left before the break three plays later.

In the third quarter, the two teams produced points on three consecutive possessions.
Fralicker made a 41-yard field goal to end a short drive that was set up by Dieuseul Joseph’s
39-yard kickoff return to begin the period. The Pride, who have won 11 of 13 meetings in this
series that began in 1974, followed with Savage’s 43-yard touchdown pass to Sullivan. The
junior signal-caller rolled to his right from pressure and hit Sullivan, who fought off free safety
Dave Casale for the ball at the goal line.

The Great Danes regrouped with a seven-play drive to close the gap to 28-13 with 5:23
left in the period. Esposito started the march with a 22-yard scamper and finished off the march
with a 9-yard scoring run on delay through the middle.

Both defenses stiffened the rest of the way as Hofstra came up with two fourth-quarter
interceptions to preserve the lead. Esposito was picked off by middle linebacker Stanley
Gutierrez at the Pride 36 with 8:07 remaining. Free safety David Darby sealed the verdict with
an interception at this own 20-yard line with less than three minutes left.

“They have a good defense, but we had our chances in the second half,” said UAlbany
coach Bob Ford, whose team was hosting the highest-ranked opponent in the program’s
Football Championship Subdivision (formerly I-AA) history. “The kickoff return deflated us and it
took us about the next eight minutes to get back into the game. While we have closed the gap
with these teams, you still have to play well on every down to have an opportunity to win it.”

Savage connected on 19 of 28 passes for 262 yards, while Huggins ran for 73 yards on
26 carries. Sullivan had six receptions for 125 yards for the Pride, who are ranked in the Top 25
for the first time in nearly two years. David McCarty was UAlbany’s leading ball carrier with 47
yards on 16 attempts.

“The return did take the wind out of our sails,” Esposito admitted. “But we had good field
position in the second half and were very close to making some big plays. While we gained
some confidence that we can match up with teams of their caliber, we could have scored more
points. Since | have been here we have had to totally rely on the defense, and now | think we
(the offense) are starting to even things out.”

Youngstown, Ohio — Freshman striker Teresa Boring scored a pair of goals, one in each half, to lead
UAlbany to a 2-1 victory over Youngstown State in the first round of the Penguin Classic on Friday
evening at Stambaugh Stadium. The Great Danes, who evened their record at 2-2-2, are off to their
best start since 1995.

UAlbany took a 1-0 lead in the opening period when Boring converted a penalty kick at the
34:59 mark. Adrienne Heady and Boring put more pressure on Penguin goalkeeper Caitlin
Bodzioney with two shots on goal over the next four minutes. But the sophomore netminder came up
with two of her 12 saves.

Following an extended halftime due to a lightning delay, Boring went to work again by scoring
unassisted 57 seconds into the half. The first-year collegian, who had 111 career goals on the
scholastic level when she was a three-time all-section player in the state of Illinois, tallied her third of
the season for a 2-0 advantage.

Youngstown State (0-5) sliced the deficit in half at 68:36 when junior midfielder Carrie Wack
sent a shot into the net off a feed from Lauren Brennan. But the Great Danes stayed ahead by
stepping up the pace on the offensive end. Bodzioney was forced to turn aside three more scoring
chances, including Danielle Ethier’s attempt with two minutes and 53 seconds remaining.

Maria Liguori made two saves for the Great Danes, who will meet Indiana State on Sunday at

@' 1:00 a.m. in the tournament’s second round. The Sycamores upended Howard, 4-1, in their first-

UALBANY FOOTBALL DEFEATS FORDHAM, 23-20

Bronx, N.Y. -- Jason Fralicker made a 20-yard field goal early in the fourth quarter and Dave Casale recovered
a fumble with less two minutes remaining in leading UAlbany to a 23-20 victory over Fordham on Saturday
evening at Jack Coffey Field.

In a tense battle, UAlbany's Emerson Kinsey recovered a fumble after tailback Jonte Coven was
stripped in a pile at the line of scrimmage which led to Fralicker's third field goal of the game. Fordham (1-1)
would have four more offensive possessions. Mark Sheehan's sack ended a drive to midfield with less than
four minutes left. Trevor DuPont then forced wide receiver Richard Rayborn to fumble, following a completed
pass, and Casale gathered in the loose ball to preserve the victory.

"That was a solid team effort,” said UAlbany head coach Bob Ford. “We played well in all three phases
of the game. Good teams figure out how to win the fourth quarter, and we made less errors than we did the
first week."

UAlbany (1-1) took a 20-13 lead in the third period with a 12-play, 95-yard drive. The Great Danes,
who rushed for 337 yards and accounted for 510 total, mixed the run and pass. Fullback Dan Beigel scored on
a 1-yard run, slanting over the right side.

The Rams, who were coming off an impressive 27-23 win over Rhode Island in their opener, followed
with an 11-play march to draw even. Quarterback John Skelton, who completed 20 of 43 passes for 294
yards, tossed a 6-yard TD to Coven with 5:21 left in the quarter.

David McCarty, a sophomore tailback, led UAlbany's rushing attack with 143 yards on 26 carries.

o... Esposito, who making his second career start, threw for 173 yards by hitting on 17 of 26 attempts.
Meanwhile, linebacker Colin Disch became the school's all-time tackles leader with 356, moving past Josh
Bazan (1999-2002).

"Our offensive line felt they were embarrassed last week,” said Esposito. “They completely wanted to
establish themselves. We came together as a team and gained confidence as we moved the ball."

The two teams played to a 13-13 halftime tie when Fordham went the length of the field in 26 seconds
at the end of the second quarter. John Skelton beat the UAlbany secondary with a 51-yard bomb. He then
fired a 15-yard TD strike to split end David Moore. The contest stayed even when linebacker Colin Dish broke
through the middle to block Adam Danko's point-after attempt.

The Great Danes jumped out to a 10-0 lead after one quarter. Jason Fralicker booted a 35-yard field
goal to cap a 13-play drive. UAlbany then marched 86 yards in 14 plays to the end zone. Omar Johnson's
fourth-down run kept the sequence alive. Quarterback Vinny Esposito, rolling to his right, flipped a 10-yard
touchdown pass to tight end Marcus Miles with 59 seconds left.

Fordham closed the gap to 10-7 early in the second stanza when Skelton connected with Jason
Caldwell over the middle on a 52-yard scoring pass. Caldwell broke a tackle and raced up the right sideline.
Fralicker would drill his second field goal, a 37-yarder, with 28 seconds left before intermission.

"We just stuck with what we do (after the first half), we didn't tackle well,” offered Trevor DuPont. “We
buckled down in the second half, rose to the occasion, and came up with some key plays."

UALBANY FOOTBALL OPENS 2007 SEASON WITH A 13-11 LOSS AT COLGATE

Hamilton, N.Y. — Tailback Jordan Scott rushed 44 times for 180 yards and one touchdown and Mike
Buck kicked the go-ahead field goal in the third quarter in leading Colgate to a 13-11 non-conference
victory over UAlbany in the season opener for both teams on Saturday afternoon at Andy Kerr
Stadium.

The Raiders, who snapped a three-game skid in season lid-lifters, reversed an 11-10 halftime
deficit when Buck nailed a 19-yard field goal with 11:15 remaining in the third quarter. The scoring
play was set up when a low punt snap was covered by UAlbany’s Chris Lynch at his own 15-yard line.

Both teams had scoring opportunities in the final two periods, but could not convert in this
expected defensive struggle. UAlbany quarterback Vinny Esposito, who threw for 154 yards and
rushed for 39 more in his first collegiate start, moved his team into field goal position twice. But
Jason Fralicker missed right from 23 yards in the third period and misfired from 41 yards in the fourth.

With their backs against the goal line and 4:27 to play, the Raiders put together a game-
clinching, non-scoring drive of 77 yards. Reserve quarterback Alex Relph found Pat Simonds down
the sideline for 33 yards in a third-and-13 situation to keep the march alive. Scott, a first-team All-
Patriot League running back who ran for 121 of his total in the second half, then went to work. His
key run came when he kept his balance on a first-down run to the UAlbany 28 that helped run out the

clock.

© In a first half where the special teams were involved in all of the scoring, Colgate jumped out to
a 10-0 lead in the opening five minutes. Cody Williams broke out of a pack and broke down the left
sideline 87 yards with the kickoff. Scott scored on a 4-yard run over the right side on his team’s first
offensive play. UAlbany’s Lynch shanked a punt that led to Buck’s 37-yard field goal with 11:44 left in
the first quarter.

“We spotted them 10 points before the national anthem was over,” said UAlbany coach Bob
Ford, whose team edged Lehigh, 17-16, in last year’s opener. “We had some breakdowns on special
teams and had a couple of opportunities to take control of the game on offense.”

The Great Danes rebounded in that first half when a snap went through Colgate punter Jacob
Stein’s hands that resulted in a safety. UAlbany used the subsequent free kick to march deep into
Raider territory. Fralicker booted a 37-yard field goal to slice the deficit to 10-5. The senior
placekicker added field goals of 41 and 45 yards in the second quarter to put his team ahead. The
second tied the school’s single-game record and equaled the seventh-longest kick in the program’s
history.

“The positive is that we can play with anyone,” said UAlbany defensive end Mark Sheehan,
who had career-highs with nine tackles and three sacks. “It’s a team game and each side of the
football needs to help each other out. We need to get these things fixed to have a big season.”

Fullback Dan Beigel offered, “Vinny Esposito had a heckuva day. He is someone who lead our
team as the season goes along. But we made too many mistakes and were not aligned properly at
times on offense. Our defense played extremely well.”
