Baltimore, Md. — Sophomore guard Jon lati had 20 of his career-high 29 points in the first half
in leading UAlbany to a 76-61 America East Conference victory over UMBC on Sunday
afternoon at Retriever Athletic Center. The Great Danes clinched their first-ever America East
regular season title and will be the top seed for next week’s postseason tournament.
UAlbany (18-10, AE 13-3) reversed an early 5-4 deficit with 10 of the game’s next 12 points.
lati made the first of a career-best six 3-point field goals to put his team ahead and finished off
that run with a steal and layup. He canned four long-range jumpers in the opening period, as
his team took a 35-26 margin to the locker room.
The Great Danes, who have won eight of their last 10 contests, still led 44-37 early in the
second half but then pulled away with a 12-5 scoring run. Lucious Jordan, who had all 13 of
his points after halftime, sank a three-pointer from the top of the arc to begin that outburst.
Kirsten Zoellner, a 7-foot-1 senior, added a pair of baskets before Brent Wilson’s three-pointer
gave his club a 56-42 advantage with 9:39 remaining.
@.\. talked about winning the regular season all week,” commented Jordan, who added seven
rebounds. “This is a great accomplishment for our team, but now we need to move on to the
next goal. This definitely gives us momentum and confidence. We just need to continue to do
the little things in practice this week.”
John Zito, one of two seniors playing in his final home game, led UMBC (9-18, AE 5-11) with
16 points and six rebounds. Jarrell Dinkins and Chris Pugh each had 10 points for the
Retrievers, who came into the game with an 8-3 home record.
“| just had one of those days where everything is dropping,” said lati, who made 8-of-12 from
the field and 7-of-8 from the line in reaching twin figures for the first time since Dec. 28. “I felt
comfortable playing out there and when Coach (Brown) put me in early, that showed he had
confidence in me.”
Wilson and Zoellner each scored in double figures for the Great Danes with 11 points apiece.
Jamar Wilson finished with nine points and five assists. The Great Danes, as the top seed,
will play in the America East quarterfinal round on Saturday, March 4 at 6 p.m.

Spartanburg, S.C. — J.D. Melton hit a solo home run with the game tied at eight in the bottom
of the seventh inning as Wofford defeated UAlbany, 9-8, in game two of a doubleheader on
Saturday afternoon at Russell C. King Field. The Terriers also took game one, 7-3.
In the nightcap, Wofford (7-5) built a 6-2 lead entering the top of the fifth. UAlbany (2-4) got
three in the fifth, keyed by Steve Sayre’s (East Greenbush) two-run double. The Great Danes
added three more in the sixth to tie the game at eight. But with two out in the seventh, Melton,
who also threw two innings of no-hit relief to earn his first collegiate victory, took an
Alexander Beaulieu pitch and hit it over the left-field fence.
In the first game, Wofford got on top early, scoring three in the first. Brandon Waring and
John Brandt had RBI singles for the Terriers, who scored all their runs with two outs in the
inning. UAlbany’s Nate Olson, a transfer from Long Island, got his squad on the board in the
fourth with a two-run home run. Brandt, who went 3-3 with four RBI, hit a two-run homer in the
fifth to give his squad a five-run advantage. Lance Player and Melton combined to pitch a
scoreless seventh for Wofford.
Rashad Barksdale (Hudson) went 4-5 with three runs scored on the day for the Great

Baltimore, Md. — Kevin Huntley and Paul Rabil each scored three goals as Johns Hopkins,
the nation's top-ranked team, held off No. 18 UAlbany, 10-8, in the season opener for both
teams on Saturday afternoon at Homewood Field.
Johns Hopkins, the defending national champions, scored three times in the opening
four minutes of play. Huntley netted a pair of goals in that span, including a shot from the
right side for a 3-0 advantage. Huntley, who also had two assists, tied a career-high with five
points.
A sophomore attackman, Huntley gave his team a 4-1 lead in the first quarter on a
bounce shot. The Blue Jays, who tied the all-time Division | record with 37 straight home
wins, led 5-1 after one period, and following a scoreless second quarter took that margin to
the locker room.
The Great Danes, who have captured three straight America East Conference
championships, would slice the deficit to two goals twice early in the fourth quarter. Frank
Resetarits, who added three assists, converted a 10-yard shot after gaining a loose ball to
close the gap to 8-6 with 6:38 remaining.
® The Blue Jays, who won for the 17th consecutive time, regrouped with a pair of goals
12 seconds apart. All-America attack Jake Byrne tallied his second goal of the game by rifling
a shot into the net from the left side. Rabil, a sophomore midfielder, scored off the following
face-off when he switched to his left hand and deposited the ball from in front of the cage.
UAlbany's Merrick Thomson, who had three goals and one assist, and Derek Dale each found
the net in the late stages of the contest.
“We proved that we could play at high level," said UAlbany coach Scott Marr, who has
led the program to three straight NCAA appearances. "We can only get better from here.
Their three-goal blitz helped them at the start. We did not do a good job of clearing the ball or
handling their pressure."
UAlbany goalkeeper Brett Queener, who was playing in his first game after transferring
from Herkimer County Community College, was impressive in his UAlbany debut as he made
14 saves. But Queener's third-period goal, the first by a Great Dane goalie at the Division |
level, might have been the game's most dramatic play as he carried the ball from the
defensive end and hit the net to get his squad within 6-3. Johns Hopkins' Rabil connected on
an extra-man opportunity that provided his club with a four-goal margin after three periods.
“L wish | had seen the first three shots or it might have been a different game," said
Queener, who led HCCC to last year's junior college national title. "Coach Marr allows me to
travel with the ball up the field and it adds another dimension to my game. Our team gave an
awesome effort and played hard for the entire 60 minutes."

NEW HAMPSHIRE EDGES UALBANY MEN’S BASKETBALL IN OVERTIME, 78-71
Durham, N.H. — Jermaine Anderson and Mike Christensen combined for 11 points in
overtime as New Hampshire swept the regular-season series from UAlbany with a 78-71
America East Conference victory on Thursday evening at Lundholm Gymnasium.
UAlbany (17-10, AE 12-3) rallied from a 61-54 deficit to force the extra period. Brent Wilson
hit a three-pointer from the top of the arc and Brian Lillis converted a driving bank shot to cut
the lead to two. Following Christensen’s offensive foul, Wilson made a 12-foot jumper from
left of the lane to draw his team even at 61 apiece. Jamar Wilson had his shot blocked in the
lane by UNH's Jamaal Caterina with two seconds remaining.
New Hampshire (11-16, AE 8-8) led all the way in overtime as Christensen, who had 15
points off the bench, canned a three-point field goal from the right wing on his team’s first
possession of the period. The Wildcats, who also defeated the visitors in overtime in the first
meeting on Jan. 22, pulled away when Caterina tipped in his own missed shot for a 70-67
lead. Anderson, who had 15 points, 10 rebounds and six assists, then sank a pair of free
e.
“This was the same as the last game,” said UAlbany coach Will Brown, whose team had its
seven-game winning streak in conference play halted. “We weren't disciplined on defense.
They are a tough matchup because they spread the floor. We didn’t help ourselves in the first
half on either end of the floor.”
New Hampshire led by as much as 10 points in the opening period before settling for a 31-25
halftime margin. The Great Danes kept within striking distance and drew even at 52 all on an
inside basket by Kirsten Zoellner, who had 12 points. The Wildcats answered when Blagoj
Janev, who had 13 points, buried a three-pointer from the left corner. Later freshman Tyrece
Gibbs, who had 14 points, sank a 23-footer that beat the shot clock for a 61-54 advantage
with 2:25 left.
UAlbany’s Lucious Jordan led four players in double figures with 17 points and eight
rebounds. Jamar Wilson and Levi Levine added 13 and 11 points, respectively.
“They hit all of our pressure points in the two games,” Levine commented. “We thought we
had the momentum going into overtime, but we didn’t do the right things to get the win. Now
we need to take one day at a time as we prepare for our next game.”

Women’s Basketball —- New Hampshire 70, Albany 55
Durham, N.H. — Danielle Clark tallied a double-double with 20 points and 11 rebounds as
New Hampshire defeated UAlbany, 70-55, in America East Conference women’s basketball
action on Wednesday evening at Lundholm Gymnasium.
New Hampshire (14-11, AE 5-8) used a 16-2 run bridging the first and second halves to
open a 38-26 advantage with 16:36 remaining in the contest. Ray Williams, who also notched
a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds, hit a pair of layups to cap the run.
UAlbany (6-18, AE 2-11) bounced back scoring 15 of the game’s next 20 points over the
following 6:31. Devran Tanacan had all six of her points during that stretch and Sarah Hayes
(Rensselaer) hit two free throws to cut the lead to 43-41 with 10:05 remaining. A pair of three
pointers by Emily Hardy and Ebony Woods stopped UAlbany’s spurt and kickstarted a 12-2
Wildcat run as they regained their double-digit advantage.
Amanda Ward, who scored a career-high 23 points in the loss, hit consecutive buckets to
bring the Great Danes within eight and Gia Sanders hit a jumper in the lane to cut the gap to
55-49 with 4:36 to go. But Clark, who scored in double figures for the 20th time this season,
and Ray combined to score 10 points down stretch to seal the victory for UNH.
"Ray Williams really hurt us when she kept getting those offensive rebounds," said
Quaibany coach Trina Patterson, whose team gave up eight offensive caroms to Williams.
“Their (New Hampshire’s) defense also put a lot of pressure on our guards and we weren't
ready for that."
UAlbany, which scored the game’s first eight points, jumped out to a 13-2 lead early in the
first half. The Great Danes led 24-21 with 4:22 left in the opening stanza, but the Wildcats,
who snapped a three-game losing streak with the victory, closed the period on a 7-0 run to
take a 29-24 halftime advantage.
Ward, who scored in twin figures for the fifth straight game, was the only Great Dane in
double digits. Jen Schumacher added nine points on three first half 3-pointers.

Men’s Basketball — UAlbany 76, Vermont 64
Albany, N.Y. — Jamar Wilson scored 15 of his 21 points in the second half as UAlbany
clinched a share of the America East Conference regular-season title with a 76-64 victory
over Vermont before 4,011 fans on Monday evening at the Recreation and Convocation
Center. The Great Danes also earned the top seed for next week’s conference postseason
tournament.
UAlbany (17-9, AE 12-2) led 54-45 with 6:55 remaining, but then broke things open with
nine of the game’s next 10 points. Brent Wilson, who had 18 points on 8-of-10 shooting, and
grabbed six rebounds, canned a pair of three-point field goals in that decisive run. Kirsten
Zoellner, one of four seniors who were making their final home appearance, made two free
throws for a 63-46 advantage.
Jamar Wilson, a 6-foot-1 junior who scored 20-plus for the fifth time in his last six
games and added seven assists, then pushed the lead to 70-50 when he made a three-point
play after being fouled on a driving layup. The Great Danes, who held the visitors to 35./-
percent shooting in the final period, avenged a 12-point loss to Vermont in this season’s first
meeting on Jan. 18.
“We exchanged baskets for quite a while in the second half, but we really turned it up
Quit eight minutes to go, especially on defense,” commented UAlbany coach Will Brown,
whose team also secured a NIT berth with its regular-season crown. “We had a lot of energy
early in the first half, but then we got into foul trouble and that set us back.”
The Great Danes, who have won seven of their last eight contests, got off to a quick
start by leaping to a 14-5 lead. Lucious Jordan, the third UAlbany player in double figures
with 11 points, converted a driving layup before Brian Lillis drilled a 3-pointer. UAlbany led by
as much as 15 in the period, but then settled for a 35-27 halftime margin.
Vermont (11-14, AE 7-7) was still trailing by eight points with 13:34 to play when Martin
Klimes, who scored a team-high 13, converted in the lane off a feed from Josh Duell. The
Catamounts, who had won eight straight times in this series since the 2002-03 season, never
got any closer. Freshman guard Mike Trimboli added 12 points and six assists. UAlbany’s
Levi Levine had seven points and five assists off the bench.
“This is very rewarding,” offered Levine, a tri-captain whho played on a team with a 5-
23 record just two seasons ago. “We are still greedy because we want to get to the NCAAs,
but this was nice to share with the people who have been with us through the tough times.
Everybody has matured and this year it has come together.”

fourth in the long jump.
The Great Danes were followed by UMBC, which scored 148 to finish second. UAlbany’s win
margin of 45 points is the most by a men’s indoor America East champion since 1991. New
Hampshire (127.5), Boston U. (100) and Binghamton (86.5) followed to round out the top five.

Burlington, Vt. - Sophomore guard Sherri Mikus netted a career-high 23 points, including 18 in the
second half, to lead UAlbany past Vermont, 65-62, in America East Conference women’s basketball
action on Saturday afternoon at Patrick Gymnasium. The Great Danes defeated Vermont for the first
time in the teams’ 10 meetings.
UAlbany (6-17, AE 2-10) extended a 29-27 halftime lead with a 12-0 run early in the second stanza to
take the 47-33 advantage with 11:49 remaining in the game. Vermont (8-14, AE 4-9) answered back
with 17 of the game’s next 22 points as Ashleigh Cuncic hit two from beyond the arc, including one
to cap the run and cut the lead to 52-50 with 4:32 left to play.
Jen Schumacher, who finished with seven points for the Great Danes, made a driving layup and
Mikus made both ends of a one-and-one to rebuild the lead to 57-52 at the 1:19 mark. UAlbany
pushed out to a 63-57 advantage with 53.6 seconds to go, after Mikus hit two free throws and
Schumacher and Amanda Ward added one apiece.
The Catamounts came within three after Chrissy Battram sank one at the line, but the Great Danes
grabbed the rebound and Mikus converted her final two free throws to seal the victory, the team’s first
e. eight contests.
“In the first half, | just let my defense be my offense,” commented Mikus, who made all six of her free
throws in the final 1:19 of the game. “I had no idea how many points | was scoring. | concentrated on
making the free throws at the end of the game to ice it.”
Alexis Castro notched her second double-double against UAlbany this season, finishing with 20
points and 10 rebounds for Vermont. Cuncic added 14 points and six steals, but the Catamounts
could not mount a successful comeback and have now dropped seven of their last eight games.
“I'm ecstatic,” said UAlbany coach Trina Patterson, whose team shot a season-high 53.2 percent from
the floor. “After Vermont blew us out the last time we played, we were determined not to let that
happen again. Sherri is the leader,” Patterson added of Mikus, who grabbed a career-high seven
rebounds while adding six steals and five assists. “She put this team on her back and handled the
tough run in the second half.”
Ward tied her season-high with 18 points, plus added six rebounds and four assists. She owns a four-
game, double-digit scoring streak, the longest of any Great Dane this season. Freshman Kirsten
Peterson finished with five points and a season-high five blocks in strong defensive play down the
stretch.

with 1:16 remaining in leading Virginia Commonwealth to a 70-67 victory over UAlbany in the
fourth annual BracketBusters on Friday evening at Alltel Pavilion.
Virginia Commonwealth (17-8) went ahead 66-64 when Maynor converted a back door
layup off a high-post pass from George. UAlbany (16-9) closed to within one when Jamar
Wilson split a pair of free throws. UAlbany later closed within one when Lucious Jordan
scored on a follow shot in the lane with 9.0 seconds left. Maynor, who had nine points off the
bench, then sank two free throws for a 70-67 before Jamar Wilson’s three-point attempt was
blocked by B.A. Walker with three seconds to play.
The Great Danes, who had their six game winning streak halted, traded baskets with
VCU for almost the entire second half. Wilson, who had 21 of his game-high 28 points in the
final period, kept his team in the hunt throughout the period. Kirsten Zoellner gave UAlbany its
last lead at 61-60 with 3:09 left when he hit a layup in the lane.

points in the final stanza, then tied the contest for the ninth time at 64 apiece by drilling a
three pointer from the right wing.
“We hurt ourselves with all the turnovers,” said UAlbany coach Will Brown, whose team
made a season-high 20 miscues. They put pressure on us throughout the game and it
bothered us at times. Give them credit they made some tough shots down the stretch. This
was a great atmosphere to play in and we competed at a high level.”
Both teams got off to a slow start to begin the game. The Rams would eventually build
an eight-point lead on two occasions in the period including 24-16 on Jamal Schuler’s layup
with 2:36 remaining. However the Great Danes closed the gap to 24-22 by the intermission as
Jamar Wilson converted a layup and Levi Levine sank two free throws to end the period. ]
“They put pressure on us for the entire 40 minutes,” commented Jamar Wilson, whose
squad had won 14 of its previous 16 contest. “We eventually calmed down and came together
as a team. We knew at that point we had a chance to win the game.”
VCU's Alexander Harper was the only other player in double figures with 11 points.

ABBY SCHRADER REGISTERS DOUBLE-DOUBLE TO LEAD MAINE PAST UALBANY
Albany, N.Y. — Senior Abby Schrader scored 19 points and added a career-high 15
rebounds in leading Maine to a 61-52 win over UAlbany in America East Conference
basketball action on Sunday afternoon at the Recreation and Convocation Center.
After trailing 35-29 at halftime, UAlbany (5-17, AE 1-10) rallied to take a 50-46 advantage with
7:35 to go in the second half. Amanda Ward, who finished with 13 points for her third straight
game in double figures, scored on a drive in the lane and Gia Sanders converted a baseline
jumper.
Maine (7-14, AE 3-7) regrouped and scored the game’s next 11 points to pull away for a 57-
50 lead. Colleen Kilmurray started the spurt with a pair of free throws, then Bracey Barker
added a bucket in the lane to pull the Black Bears even at 50-50. Schrader, who recorded her
league-leading ninth double-double, added two more at the charity stripe before Margaret
Elderton scored five straight points, including 3-of-4 at the line. During the run, Maine held
the Great Danes scoreless, as they missed their next 11 attempts.
@ ou players got a little tentative at the end of the game, and started to second guess their
shots, said UAlbany coach Trina Patterson, whose team shot 41 percent (23-of-56) from the
floor. “The two things we pride ourselves on are rebounding and defense. We did a good job
holding them to 34-percent shooting, but our rebounding was not where it needed to be.”
Maine owned a 43-29 edge on the glass and took advantage at the line, making 22-of-27
attempts, compared to 6-of-9 for UAlbany. The Great Danes also struggled from three-point
range, misfiring on 15 long-range shots.
Barker and Elderton each finished with 13 points for the Black Bears, who won on the road for
the first time in eight games. Sherri Mikus paced UAlbany with a career-high 18 points on 8-
of-13 shooting, and added four assists and four steals.

WILSON AND ZOELLNER LEAD UALBANY BASKETBALL TO SIXTH STRAIGHT WIN
Orono, Maine — Jamar Wilson had a season-high 30 points and Kirsten Zoellner added a
career-high 17 in leading UAlbany to its sixth straight win in an 87-73 America East
Conference victory over Maine on Saturday evening at Alfond Arena.
Maine (9-14, AE 4-8) trailed by as much as 11 points on two occasions in the opening period,
but regrouped to take a 60-59 lead with 7:59 remaining. Chris Bruff, who had 13 points off
the bench, converted a shot in the lane to put his team ahead.
UAlbany (16-8, AE 11-2) responded with 10 unanswered points. Levi Levine, who had 12
points, five rebounds and five assists, hit a turn-around in the lane to put the Great Danes
ahead for good. Zoellner, a 7-foot-1 senior, later converted a three-point play when he hit a
jump hook off the glass. Jason Siggers, who reached double figures for the fifth time in his
last six games with 13 points, made another three-point play as he was fouled on a fast-break
layup for a 69-60 advantage.
Wilson, who had 20 second-half points, buried a three-pointer from the top of the arc to give
his team a commanding 74-62 lead with 4:19 left. The Great Danes, who have won 14 of their
last 16 contests, held their margin in the stretch as Wilson sank a pair of free throws and
Brian Lillis made three more from the line.
“We did a good job of moving the ball,” offered Wilson, who added six assists and five
rebounds in reaching the 30-point mark for the fifth time in his career. “Kirsten (Zoellner) is
our X-factor. He takes up space and is the reason we have been successful. He helped open
up their Zone with strong moves and tough plays.”
Ernest Turner led four Maine players in double figures with 16 points. Jon Sheets and
Freddy Petkus each had 15 for the Black Bears, who dropped their third straight.
“We didn't settle for jump shots,” said UAlbany coach Will Brown, whose team shot better
than 50 percent from the field for the third time in its last four outings. “We knew we would see
a zone and we were able to make plays with dribble penetration. Every conference game at
this time of the year is going to be a war and we were able to survive.”

Women’s Basketball — Hartford 70, Albany 53
Hartford, Conn. — Erika Messam scored a team-high 16 points as Hartford upended UAlbany,
70-53, in America East Conference women’s basketball action on Thursday evening at Chase
Arena.
Hartford (18-2, AE 10-0), which set a program-record with its 12th straight victory, got out toa
24-11 advantage when Messam hit a driving layup with 6:20 left in the first half. The Great
Danes cut the deficit to 10 before halftime as Sherri Mikus canned a long-range three pointer
as time expired in the period. The Hawks, who shot 14-of-28 from the floor in the first stanza,
led 32-22 at intermission.
UAlbany (5-16, AE 1-9) trailed 44-30 with 15:35 left in the contest, but Hartford ran off 12 of
the game’s next 16 points to open up a 56-34 lead with 12:31 remaining. Messam had five
points in that stretch, including a conventional three-point play. UAlbany cut the gap to 13
when Jen Schumacher hit one of her season-high five 3-pointers with 8:31 to go. The Great
Danes would not get any closer as Hartford held on for its 24th win in its last 25 home games.
Q@we did not take advantage of our opportunities,” said UAlbany head coach Trina Patterson,
whose team was 2-of-11 from the free-throw line. “We did a good job of getting to the basket
but didn't make our free throws. I’m so proud of our effort. We made a good run in the second
half but just needed more time.”
Schumacher was one of two Great Danes in double-figures finishing with a game-high 17
points on 6-of-10 shooting, including 5-of-6 from three-point land. Amanda Ward, a 5-foot-9

UALBANY PICKED THIRD IN AMERICA EAST PRESEASON MEN’S LACROSSE POLL
Boston, Mass. — University at Albany has been picked to finish third in the America East
Conference Men’s Lacrosse Preseason Coaches’ Poll, as announced today by the
conference office. UMBC is the preseason favorite with 32 points and three first-place votes,
while Stony Brook (28) and UAlbany (26) follow in order. The Great Danes received two first-
place votes.
The America East Championship will be held on May 5 and 7. The semifinals and
championship will be played at the No. 1 seed’s home field. The Great Danes have captured
three consecutive conference titles.
UAlbany earned its third straight NCAA appearance with a 10-6 record in 2005. Head
coach Scott Marr will face a different challenge this season as just three starters return. “Our
team will be thrown to the wolves right away with three of our opening four opponents having
made the NCAAs,” commented Marr, whose team begins the spring against defending
national champion Johns Hopkins on Feb. 25. “We have a new starter at every defensive
position. We will have to get comfortable with each other very quickly.”
The Great Danes should be potent on offense with three of last year’s top four scorers
ack. Merrick Thomson (Albany Academy), a preseason honorable mention All-American,
ranked first nationally in goals (54) and second in points (74) last season. Frank Resetarits
was among the America East leaders with 29 goals and 21 assists. Chris Martocchia totaled
35 goals and 11 assists.
Sophomores Jordan Levine, who led the conference with 70 ground balls, and Steve
Ammann, who along with Levine made the America East All-Rookie Team, lead the midfield.
Freshman Dan McKeon, a first-team All-Central New York selection on the high school level,
and Brett Queener, who led Herkimer County Community College to the 2005 national
crown, are battling for the starting goalkeeper position.
UAlbany was recently ranked No. 15 by Lax.com and No. 18 by Inside Lacrosse and
Face-Off Yearbook in the preseason national polls.

Men’s Basketball — UAlbany 65, Hartford 63
West Hartford, Conn. — Jamar Wilson had 13 points and Jason Siggers added 12 off the
bench as UAlbany held off Hartford, 65-63, in America East Conference play for their fifth
Straight victory on Wednesday evening at Chase Arena.
UAlbany (15-8, AE 10-2) led 51-41 with 13:12 remaining after Siggers drilled a three-
pointer from the right corner. Hartford (9-13, AE 5-6) wiped out that deficit with 11
unanswered points while holding the visitors scoreless for five-plus minutes.
Paris Carter, who had 11 of his 18 points in the final period, keyed that outburst.
Carter, a 6’4” freshman, made a three-pointer and later sank two free throws that gave his
team a 52-51 lead with 8:19 to play. The Great Danes went back ahead 54-53 on a layup by
Levi Levine and pushed out to a 59-55 advantage when the 6’6” senior sank a pair of foul
shots.
The Hawks, who won back-to-back conference road games in their last two outings,
drew even at 59 apiece on a scoop shot in the lane by Aaron Cook, who had 17 points.
UAlbany’s Wilson put his team back on top for good with a one-handed bank shot in the lane.
The junior guard converted another drive for a 64-61 margin with 1:23 remaining.
© Hartford's Kenny Adeleke, who had 21 points and 11 rebounds, hit a jump hook in the
lane to close the gap to one. After UAlbany’s Kirsten Zoellner made the second of two free
throw attempts, Rich Baker missed a three-pointer from the left corner with seven seconds
left. Hartford had one more chance on the last play of the game when Carter stole an inbound
pass and fired a 30-foot shot that hit off the front rim as the horn sounded.
“We found a win to get it done and just gutted it out,” said UAlbany coach Will Brown,
who lost second-leading scorer Brent Wilson to a concussion at the end of the opening
period. “We were stagnant against their 1-3-1 zone and made careless turnovers. It’s the kind
of defense that makes you passive and not aggressive. But this is what conference play is all
about, where you have to win your home games and steal one on the road.”
Zoellner, a 7’1” senior, finished with 10 points, seven rebounds and two blocks for the
Great Danes, who made eight 3-point field goals in the first period to take a 39-34 halftime
lead. Levine added eight points and four rebounds, as his team has won 13 of its last 15
contests.
“As coach says, if you live by the 3, then you die by the 3,” commented Jamar Wilson,
who added five assists and five rebounds in 40 minutes played. “We didn’t play great
defense. But it goes down as a win. We saw each other against their zone in the second half,
but we just didn’t get the ball there.”
