HOME OF UALBANY FIELD HOCKEY
AlumniTurf Field, the home for UAlbany field hockey, was completed in the
fall of 2005. Alumni Turf Field features a surface of Sportexe Hockey Turf Elite,
aknitted nylon system that is made up of soft fibers that allows forimproved
playability, playercomfortandease of maintenanceand dependability. Thenew
home of UAlbany field hockey is adjacent to John Fallon Field, which serves as
the home of the UAlbany men’s and women's lacrosse teams. Both all-weather
fields are located just south of Indian Quad on campus.

Phil Sykes enters his fourth season as head coach of
the University at Albany field hockey program.Sykesled
the Great Danes to their best record in Division | history
ayear ago, which included a share of the America East
Conference regular-season title.
Sykes, who guided his team toa 12-7 overall record
with a4-1 finish in conference play, coached the 2006
America ast offensiveand defensive playersofthe year
inMichelleSimpsonandArletteWestdorp.Defender Jess
Lindsay and goalkeeper Ashley Rosswerealsonamedto
theall-conference first team, while midfielders Michele Polizois and Teska Koch
earnedsecond-teamhonors.Kochand Lindsay, alongwith forwardNicoleSavage,
also earned spots on the all-rookie squad.
Westdorp, who finished her careeras UAlbany'sall-time assists leader, led the
nation a year ago, averaging 1.00 assists per game.
InjusthissecondyearwiththeGreatDanes, Sykesledtheteamtoitsfirst America
EastConferencetournamentappearancesincejoiningtheleaguein2001.UAlbany
hadits best-ever showingin the conference standings, earning the third seed for
the tournament. The Great Danes also finished with a 9-9 record in 2005, their
best since the 2000 season.
Four of Sykes'12 starters earned all-conference honors in 2005. Forward Tina
Bryson, who finished her career in fourth place on UAlbany'sall-time points and
goalslist, earned first-teamaccolades for the second straightyear. Kristen Holder
and Westdorp both garnered second-team honors, while Westdorp and Ross
were also named to the all-rookie team.
Inconferenceplay, UAlbany posted three winsforthe first timesincejoiningthe
America East.On October 22, the Great Danes toppled No. 18 Boston University,
2-1, handing the Terriers their first conference loss since October 24, 2003. Sykes’
squad would go on to finish the season with an RPI of 29.
In addition to success on the field, Sykes saw several of his student-athletes
achieve recognition off the field, Led by 2005 tri-captain Shelley Gebhardt, six
Great Danes were named to the NFHCA National Academic Squad, including
returnees Ross, Westdorp, Letitia Mazzaferro and Vanessa Walter. Gebhardt
alsowashonored withthe Chancellor's Scholar-Athlete Award, which recognizes
academic excellence and outstanding athletic achievement.
‘The success came on the heels of a building yearin 2004, when Sykes guided
theGreatDanestoa7-11 overall record. UAlbany finished 2-4and tied for fourth
placein the America Eaststandings and camewithin one victory of qualifying for
the America East tournament.
Sykes coached Bryson to America East All-Conference First Team accolades.
Forward Danielle Costello was voted to the second team while Danielle Conklin
andHolderearnedall-rookiehonors.NineGreatDaneswerenamedtothe America
East Academic Honor Roll, and Amber Wade, Cheryl Varga and Gebhardt were
selected to the NFHCA National Academic Squad.
Prior to his arrival at Albany, Sykes stepped intoa roleas interim head coach
atComellin2003, Underhis tutelage, midfielder Karleigh Burnsreceivedsecond-
team All-lvy League recognition.
Sykesalsoservedas the firstassistantat Towson University. The Tigers showed
dramaticimprovement during Sykes'tenure, winning 10 games during the 2002
season. The Tigers secured victories against nationally-ranked Delaware and
Hofstra.
Sykes, 36, has a vast amount of playing experience. At age 16, Sykes repre-
sented his country ina United States vs. Canada Challenge in Calgary, Alberta.
That served as the beginning of Sykes’ experience on the US. Juniorand Senior
National Teams, which included playing in the 1989 Junior World Cup in Ipoh,
Malaysia.
Sykes competed at the 1995 Pan American Games in Argentina, where the
US. squad wona bronze medal. The highlight of Sykes’ playing career came in
the 1996 Olympics, when he played on the US. Olympic team and was able to.
represent the nation at the highest level.
Anative of Livermore, Calif,, Sykes retired from international competition to
finish his college degree. He graduated with a bachelor's degree in kinesiology
from California State University, Hayward in 1999.
Sykes, who resides in Clifton Park with his fiancee Jen, also plays competitive
tennis. He played number one singlesand doublesat Chabot Junior Collegeand
began teaching tennis in California, later earning his USPTA certification.
Katie White
AssISTANT COACH
Katie White joins the UAlbany coaching staff this
season.
White comesto Albanyafter spendingayearasan
assistant at Colgate University. White helped develop
the Patriot League's Goalkeeper of the Year and Rookie
of the Year while with the Raiders. White acted as the
recruitment coordinator for the field hockey program,
while also organizing and directing three tournaments.
Afour-year letterwinner at New Hampshire,
White was a two-time All-America East Conference
First eam and Regional All-America honoree, and was named the conference's
rookie of the year in 2003. She finished her career with the Wildcats ranked third
in goalsand fourth in points. White earned her bachelor’s degree in psychology
from New Hampshire in 2006.
White has also served as the director and head coach inthe USFHA
Futures PrograminNew York, and wasanassistant coach forthe Futures Program
in New Hampshire. She has coached field hockey camps at Boston College and
Northeastern University, and also gained experience as a coach at Mike Boyle
Strength and Conditioning in North Andover, Mass.
Andy Thornton
ASSISTANT COACH
Andy Thornton begins his fourth season as an as-
sistant coach with the University at Albany field hockey
program.
Thornton has been coaching field hockey in his
native Scotland for several years. He was named the
2004 Scottish Coach of the Year for youth boys andtook
Grove Academy High School to their first U-18 national
the head coach for the women's field hockey team at
i field hockey title in March of 2004. Thornton was also.
Duathndee University from 2002-04. In 2003 he was
named the Scottish Grass Roots Coach of the Year.
Asa player, Thornton was a member of the Menzieshill men's field hockey
club, which competes at the top indoor and outdoor level. Thornton has won
six national titles and played in five European Cups, representing Scotland. He
has played in three European’A’ division and two"B" division cups, playing
in the Czech Republic, Spain, Germany, France and Russia, winning gold and
silvermedals.Thornton’sindoorsquadwon consecutive Scottish National Indoor
League Championships.In 1999, Thomton'steam won the European Indoor gold
medal in the Czech Republic. Healso played on Scotland's U-18,U-19 and U-21
international teams.
Thomtonearedabachelorsdegreeinsportscoachinganddevelopmentfrom
the University of Abertay in 2004.

‘America East champion Albany and runner-up UMBC each advanced to the NCAA Men's Lacrosse Quarterfinals, America East and the ACC were the only conferences
inthe nation with multiple teams in the elite eight. Scott Marr of Albany was named the national Coach of the Year by the USILA. Albany's Frank Resatarits was one of five
finalists for the Tewaaraton Trophy, which annually recognizes the top playerin the nation. Resatarits also became the first America East player since 2001 to earn first-team
All-American status.
‘AmericaEastmen’sbasketball champion Albanyandregular-season championVermonteachadvancedtothe post-season. Allbanymadeitssecond-straightappearancein
the NCAA Championship while Vermont earned an NIT berth. It marked the fourth time in five years America East had placed multiple teams in the post-season.
Albany became the first America East team to advance to the regional inal of the NCAA Softball Championship. The Great Danes defeated Harvard and Hofstra before
falling to No. 7 Baylor.
Albany also hosted an NCAA Volleyball Championship match when the Great Danes were joined by eighth-ranked Minnesota, St. John’s and Siena fora regional at
University Gym. It was the first such occurrence for an America East team,
