Holiday Inn Calder Thanksgiving Classic
(Second Day)
Albany 71, St. Thomas 66

Miami Shores, Fla. -- Senior guard Darrin Jahnel (Schalmont H.S.) scored
14 of his season-high 23 points in the second half, and Albany tied a
school-record with 15 three-point field goals in a 71-66 victory over St.
Thomas on the second day of the Holiday Inn Calder Thanksgiving Classic
at Barry University's Health and Sports Center.

Albany (3-2) jumped out to a 28-19 lead midway through the first half
by connecting on eight of nine long-range jumpers. Andre Duncan, who
had 13 of his 14 points in the opening period, buried three 3-point shots in
that stretch.

St. Thomas (1-5), which plays several of its home games on Barry's
home floor, slowly worked its way back into the contest, and took a 44-42
lead with 17:40 remaining in final stanza on a K.C. Cullins' fastbreak layup.

The Great Danes later snapped a 48-all deadlock with a 10-3 run to
regain the lead for good. Jahnel, who canned 7 of 13 shots from behind
the arc, nailed a three-pointer to break the tie. Freshman Petr Burda
scored five of his eight markers in that span.

St. Thomas, who shot 50 percent from the field, closed within one
basket twice in the final five minutes. Cullins, who had 19 points and
seven rebounds, hit a foul-line jumper with 3:17 to play, and the Bobcats
trailed, 64-62. Albany's Jahnel followed with a three-point shot from the
right wing on his team's next possession.

The Great Danes still were clinging to a 69-66 advantage, when
Cullins was stripped near the free-throw line by Todd Cetnar. The

sophomore point guard was fouled, and converted a one-to-one with 7.6
seconds left to seal the victory.

“We played well enough to win," said Albany coach Scott Hicks,
whose club made 15 of 31 three-pointers, and tied a single-game record set
last January 25th at New Haven. "St. Thomas gave us problems with their
quickness and athleticism. Duncan and Jahnel came up with big games to
give us a lift."

Cetnar (Amsterdam H.S.) had 11 points and eight assists for Albany.

Sascha Rothstein and Garfield Johnson scored 14 and 10, respectively, for
the Bobcats.

Holiday Inn Calder Thankgiving Classic
(First Day)

Barry 61, Albany 59

IUPUI 79, St. Thomas 68

Miami Shores, Fla. -- Junior guard Kit Zelinski converted a fastbreak layup
at the buzzer as Barry held off Albany, 61-59, on the first day of the Holiday
Inn Calder Thanksgiving Classic at the Health and Sports Center on Friday
evening.

Albany (2-2) trailed 48-32 early in the second half, but got back in the
contest with 12 unanswered points. Darrin Jahnel (Schalmont) had five of
his 12 points in that stretch.

The Great Danes, who never led in the contest, drew even at 59
apiece, when Andre Duncan hit a turnaround on the left baseline with 2:42
remaining. Duncan, who became the 19th player in school history to reach
1,000 career points, had 19 points and 13 rebounds.

After both teams came up empty on their next possessions, a steal
by Albany's Matthew Haggarty with 37 seconds left gave his club an
opportunity for the game-winner.

However, following at timeout, Haggarty misfired on an open 20-foot
jumper with four seconds on the clock. Barry's Andre Taylor grabbed the
rebound, and threw a perfect outlet to a streaking Zelinski, who just beat
the buzzer.

“Not many things went our way in the first half," said Albany coach
Scott Hicks, “Our press helped get us back into the game. It was a wide
open look for Haggarty, and they just beat us up the right sideline at the
end."

Tom McGoldrick had 13 points and 10 rebounds for the Great Danes.
Joel Browne led Barry (4-0) with 12 points, while Andre Taylor had 11.
Albany meets St. Thomas on Saturday at 5:30 p.m.

NORTHEAST CONFERENCE TO ADD UNIVERSITY AT ALBANY
AS ASSOCIATE MEMBER IN FOOTBALL |

Piscataway, NJ - The University at Albany has accepted an mvitation to become an associate member
of the Northeast Conference in the sport of football, effective with the 1999 season, it was announced
today by NEC Commissioner John Jamarino.

“We are delighted to add a program as successful as Albany football and are pleased to be affiliated
with one of the premier collegiate institutions in New York State,” said Iamarino. “Football is an

important component of the Northeast Conference, and the addition of Albany will only serve to
strengthen our league.”

Albany will become the seventh member of the NEC in football. Current members Central
Connecticut, Monmouth, St. Francis (PA), Robert Morris and Wagner will be joined by associate
member Sacred Heart in 1998. Sacred Heart will become a full member of the NEC in 1999.

“Membership in the Northeast Conference is important to our football program, and the University’s
long-range goals in Division I athletics,” said Albany athletic director Milt Richards. “Due to

scheduling issues, it was vital that football make a smooth transition to Division I-AA with an associate
membership.”

Albany head coach Bob Ford, who just completed his 25th season with Albany, recently led the Great
Danes to the Eastern Football Conference championship and an 11-1 overall record.

“We are pleased that the football program has a home at the Division I-AA level,” said Ford.

Conference membership gives our players and coaches something to shoot for with a championship,
standings, and all-star teams.”

The NEC and Albany have agreed to an initial four-year commitment through the 2002 season,
subject to review at that time.

Albany, N.Y. 42, Southern Connecticut State 40

Albany, N.Y. -- Senior quarterback Joe Savino passed for a school-record 398
yards and two touchdowns, and scored on a pair of runs to lead Albany to a 42-40
victory over Southern Connecticut State in the Eastern Football Conference's
Atlantic Division title game on Saturday afternoon at University Field.

Albany (10-1, EFC 8-0), which set a season standard for victories, goes on
to face American International in the EFC championship in Springfield,
Massachusetts on November 22. AIC captured the Bay State Division with a
perfect 8-0 conference mark, and is 8-2 overall.

A field which was covered by an 8-inch snowfall the previous day did not
seem to limit the two team's offenses, which combined for 1,166 yards in the
contest. Southern Connecticut State (7-4, EFC 6-2) took a 21-14 lead in the
second quarter on a one-yard run by sophomore tailback Rashaan Dumas, who
rushed 37 times for 231 yards and four touchdowns.

Albany tailback Greg Garrett, who had 22 carries for 91 yards, scored his
second ID of the game on a two-yard option run to draw his team even with 1:15
left before halftime. Savino, who connected on 19 of 36 passes, gave the Great
Danes a 28-21 advantage late in the third quarter with an 80-yard TD strike to
flanker Greg Butryn.

Early in the fourth quarter, Dumas dashed 21 yards to paydirt, but Frank
Biancamano's extra-point try went wide right. Albany, clinging to the one-point
lead, return the ensuing kickoff to the SCSU 44. Savino, on the next play, pulled
back on a fake option, and fired a touchdown to split end Dan Gmelin, who caught
11 passes, and set another record with 215 receiving yards.

The Great Danes increased their lead to 42-27 with 6:45 remaining on a 10-
play drive. Savino scored on a two-yard option to his left in a third-and-goal
situation.

Freshman quarterback Kevin Dickinson, who completed 20 of 40 passes
for a career-high 366 yards, led SCSU to scores on its last two possessions. He
directed a six-play march, before Dumas swept around left end on a 13-yard TD
run. A two-point pass failed, and the Owls trailed 42-33.

Dickinson went to work again with less than three minutes to play. He hit
Matt Hitchcock for 50 yards down the middle of the Albany defense, and then
flipped a four-yard scoring pass to the tight end with 1:32 left. Hitchcock finished
with six receptions for 115 yards.

Biancamano, who converted the PAT, then tried to recover his own on-side
kick. Albany's Luke Byrnes fell on the ball in a wild scramble, and the Great
Danes were able to run out the clock.

SCSU's Jim White and Raheem Duncan each totaled more than 100
receiving yards. White, a freshman, caught six passes for 113, while Duncan
added five catches for 104. Albany's Butryn was the fifth receiver in the game to
reach the century mark, as he caught five balls for 127.

scholastic standout Bryan Galuski, a senior guard from Shaker High.
Galuski, who connected on 7-of-16 shooting, had a game-high 19 points.
Roger Leff, a 6-foot-5 forward, added 17 for the Tritons, who dropped a 62-
61 decision to West Chester in the first round.

Georgia Southwestern 78, Albany 68

West Chester, Pa. -- Ernest Scott scored 29 points and Dwayne Myles
added 20 as Georgia Southwestern rallied in the second half for a 78-68
victory over Albany in the opening round of the WCU Tip-Off Classic at
Hollinger Field House.

Albany (0-1), which shot 69 percent in the first half, built a 53-40
advantage behind the play of senior forward Andre Duncan, who had 22
points and 13 rebounds.

Georgia Southwestern (2-1), ranked 15th nationally in the NAIA's
preseason poll, responded with 27 of the game's next 34 points by using a
full-court press. Tony Bryan's dunk gave the Hurricanes a 61-60 lead with
6:53 remaining.

Tim Adams' jumper in the lane extended Georgia Southwestern's
advantage to 67-60. A fastbreak layup by Albany's Darrin Jahnel sliced the
lead to 69-66 with 1:48 left, but Marelle Harris hit a jumper and Myles
canned a three-pointer to end the threat.

“It was a tale of two halves," said Albany coach Scott Hicks, who is in
his first season. "We played as well as we could in the first half, and as
poorly in the second. We were careless with the ball, and 23 turnovers
makes it difficult to win."
