Capital Key Classic - Second Round Albany 89, Edinboro 86 (OT)

Albany, N.Y. -- Kelly Paolino scored a season-high 19 points, including five in
overtime, to lift Albany past Edinboro, 89-86, in the second round of the Capital
Key Classic on Tuesday afternoon at the Recreation and Convocation Center.

Albany (5-5) plays in the tournament's championship at Pepsi Arena on
Wednesday at 6:00 p.m. Edinboro, ranked 19" nationally in the latest USA
Today/WBCA Division Il poll, falls to 10-2.

The Great Danes, who won their fourth straight, built a 13-point lead in the
first half on a driving layup by Liz Tucker, who had a season-best 16 points and
added nine rebounds. Albany, which shot 53 percent in the opening period,
increased its advantage to 63-46 with 13:49 remaining.

Edinboro, a 75-74 winner over Assumption in the first round, rallied in the
stretch. After Paolino's two free throws gave Albany a 75-69 lead with 35.2
seconds left, Meghan Miller canned a three-point field goal and Jessica Rowe
sank three foul shots after being fouled on a 3-point attempt. Paolino misfired at
the buzzer, and the contest went to overtime.

In the extra period, the Fighting Scots took an 83-82 lead on a pair of free
throws by Marin Hightower, who had 27 points and 12 rebounds. Tucker hit a
follow shot in the lane, and Paolino converted a layup off her steal to give Albany
the lead for good at 86-83 with 1:04 to play.

Paolino, a 5-foot-5 guard who added three assists and four steals, made
two free throws to ice the verdict with 9.4 seconds remaining.

“It's nice to Know we can win a game where the team comes together at
crunch time," Albany coach Mari Warner said. "We pulled it out despite some
mental lapses and missed opportunities. Their resolve in the overtime makes you
start believing in your team as a coach."

Albany's Megan Buchanan scored in double figures for the seventh straight
game with 14 points. Miller had 16 points for Edinboro, while Dana Polakowski
came off the bench to add 14 points and 17 rebounds.

WOMEN
Albany 52, Southern Connecticut State 35

New Haven, Conn. -- Junior forward Megan Buchanan scored 18 points and Melissa

rd Schoonover added 11 points and nine rebounds, as Albany ended a five-game losing
streak, and cruised to a 52-35 New England Collegiate Conference victory over Southern
Connecticut State Saturday afternoon at Moore Fieldhouse.

Albany (2-5, NECC 1-1) led 18-17 with four minutes left in the first period and reeled
off the last 10 points of the half. Liz Tucker scored all five of her points in that run.
Albany's stifling defense held SCSU to 23-percent shooting (12-for-52) in the game,
including 3-for-16 from three-point range.

"We played exceptional on defense," said Albany coach Mari Warner. "We got
consistency for 40 minutes and are now sticking to a basic package that is simple".

The Great Danes, with a 37-27 advantage in the second half, held SCSU scoreless
for seven minutes. During that time, Buchanan scored nine straight points, including a 3-
pointer with 4:52 left for a 47-27 lead.

SCSU (5-1, NECC 1-1) recorded the lowest point total by an opponent since Albany
defeated Eastern Connecticut 54-33 on Dec. 3, 1994.

Kim Bowen led the Owls with eight points, while leading-scorer Kristen Breen, who
entered the contest with a 16.8 points per game average, was held to just seven.

MEN
Albany 73, Southern Connecticut State 69

New Haven, Conn. -- Todd Cetnar scored a career-high 26 points and Albany tied a
school-record with 15 three-point field goals to rally in the second half for a 73-69 New
England Collegiate Conference victory over Southern Connecticut State on Saturday at
Moore Fieldhouse.

**E O re***

Albany Sports 2-2-2

Albany (3-5, NECC 1-1) won for the first time in four trips to Moore
Fieldhouse since becoming a member of the NECC in 1994.

SCSU (2-4, NECC 1-1) led 29-16 in the first half after a baseline jumper by Eric
Moore, who had 12 of his team-high 20 points in the period. The Owls still led 40-31 early
in the final period when Albany went on a 9-2 run to get back into the contest. Mike
Everett's 3-pointer closed the gap to 42-40 and eventually the Great Danes would take
their first lead at 51-50 with 9:27 left on Dave Schloss' follow shot in the lane. SCSU went
back on top 56-54 on a jumper by David Grenade, who had 12 points. But then Albany
responded with eight straight points to take the lead for good.

“Early on they killed us on the boards, but we did a good job of battling back,"
Cetnar said. "Our big guys didn't give them second shots and boxed out in the second
half."

Still leading 70-65, the Owls made it a one possession game as Moore hit a jumper
and T.J. Trimboli converted a lay-up off his steal in the last minute. Centar slammed the
door with 11.6 seconds remaining when he canned his seventh 3-pointer of the game
from the right wing. The six-foot guard from Amsterdam added four rebounds, three
assists, and three steals in the contest.

Cetnar added, "| had a good feel throughout the whole game. It's important that
Coach has confidence in me and gives me the green light."

Trimboli had 15 for SCSU, while Grenade added 12.

Franklin Pierce 68, Albany 55

Albany, N.Y. -- Alfonso Payne scored 16 of his 18 points in the second half to lead
Franklin Pierce past Albany, 68-55, in the New England Collegiate Conference
opener for both teams on Wednesday at the Recreation and Convocation Center.

Franklin Pierce (4-2, NECC 1-0), last year's conference regular-season
champion, used a 12-2 run in the first half to move out to a 23-10 advantage.
Zvonko llic, a 6-foot-5 forward, and Kwam Rocker each buried three-point field
goals in that stretch. Meanwhile, the Great Danes shot a season-worst 26 percent
from the field in the first half, and were just 5-of-33 from 3-point range on the
night.

Albany (2-5, NECC 0-1) eventually trailed 33-23 at halftime, but then closed
within 53-49 with 4:29 remaining. Freshman Will Brand, who had 10 of his 14
points in the final period, hit a turnaround from left of the lane to close the gap.

Payne, who canned 3-of-5 long-range jumpers, sank a 21-footer on his
team's next possession, and then made a driving left-hander with 2:47 left to help
the Ravens move out to a nine-point cushion. The 6-foot-2 sophomore also
converted five free throws down the stretch.

Sophomore center Donald Edge had 14 points and six rebounds for
Franklin Pierce. Todd Cetnar (Amsterdam H.S.) scored 14 for the Great Danes,
while freshman Dave Schloss added 10.
