UNIVERSITY AT ALBANY ANNOUNCES FOOTBALL STAFF CHANGES
ALBANY, N.Y. -- In a continuing effort to upgrade the University at Albany football program, head coach Bob
Ford announced today that John Reagan, a graduate assistant coach for the Great Danes, has been
elevated to offensive line coach.
Reagan, a three-year starter at center for Syracuse University, worked with Albany's offensive line in
his graduate assistant's role during the 1995 season. Prior to his arrival on campus, he was a graduate
assistant academic adviser at his alma mater. A first team ECAC all-star, he led the Orangemen to the 1992
Hall of Fame Bowl and 1993 Fiesta Bowl championships. His senior class at Syracuse combined for a 34-12-
2 record over a four-year period. Reagan later had a brief professional career with the Arena Football
League's Miami Hooters.
_ A native of Delmar, N.Y., Reagan, 24, attended Bethlehem Central High School, where he was
selected to the Class A all-state team as an offensive guard/defensive tackle. He twice was awarded all-
Section II and first team all-Suburban Council Conference honors. Reagan, a two-time GTE District |
Academic All-America, earned his undergraduate degree in psychology and exercise science, and is
expected to receive his M.A. in educational admininistration from Albany in May 1996.
Reagan replaces Ed Zaloom, who served on Ford's staff as both an offensive coordinator and line
coach for the past 12 years, and will be reassigned to other duties within the Department of Physical
Education, Recreation and Athletics. Coach Ford will become the program's offensive coordinator.
Zaloom, 42, served as an assistant football coach at Appalachian State University previous to
becoming an offensive assistant at Albany, where he was also the head baseball coach for 10 seasons
through 1994. In addition, Zaloom coached football on the scholastic level at both Fulton and Port Byron high
schools in central New York.
The Great Danes finished with a 3-7 record in their first NCAA Division II campaign last fall.

Albany Makes Move
to NCAA Division Il
The University at Albany, as announced
in May 1994, upgraded its intercollegiate
athletics program for men and women to
NCAA Division II status from Division III with
the start of the 1995-96 academic year.
Albany also became a member of the
New England Collegiate Conference
(NECC). Several Great Dane teams, includ-
ing men's and women's basketball, will com-
pete for NECC championships. Football is
a member of the ECAC Intercollegiate Con-
ference.
NECC members are the University of
Bridgeport, Franklin Pierce College, Keene
State College, LeMoyne College, University
of Massachusettts-Lowell, New Hampshire
College, University of New Haven, Sacred
Heart University, Southern Connecticut
State University, and University at Stony
Brook.
"Athletics is a rallying point for alumni,
students, faculty, friends, and the commu-
nity," said Director of Athletics Dr. Milton
E. Richards, who is working to make
Albany's athletics as good as its renowned
academic programs. "An enhanced athlet-
ics program affords us an opportunity to
contribute substantially to campus life and
community interaction."
University Inducts Class of '95
into Athletic Hall of Fame
The University enshrined five former ath-
letes into its Athletic Hall of Fame on No-
vember 11 at the 12th annual HOF Brunch
and Induction Ceremony. The event was
held in the Recreation & Convocation Cen-
ter (RACC) on campus. WTEN-TV Sports
Director Dan Murphy '82 served as master
of ceremonies.
The inductees and their sports include,
Carlos Arango ‘78, soccer; Winsome
Foderingham-Herard '88, track & field;
Johnny Rolando '77, soccer; Karen Smiley
'90, softball; George Webb '69, baseball.
Foderingham-Herard is the only woman
in the history of Albany's track & field pro-
gram to win an individual NCAA champion-
ship. A 13-time Division Ill All-America ath-
lete, she won the 200-meter dash in 1986
and 1988, and captured the 100-meter title
in 1987.
Arango and Rolando each had a hand
in Albany reaching the NCAA men's soccer
tournament on three occasions during the
1970s. Rolando, a midfielder, was a three-
time first team all-New York state selection,
while Arango, a forward, was chosen all-
state in 1977 and 1978.
Smiley, a record-setting pitcher, led the
Albany softball team to two state champi-
onships in 1988 and 1989. She was twice
named to the NYSWCAA all-star team, and
Jeff Emerson was one of three Albany football
players to be named as an ECAC-IFC All-Star.
posted a 20-5 record as a senior.
A three-year varsity pitcher on the UA
baseball team, Webb tied a single-season
record with five victories on the mound in
1969. In addition, he won two team most
valuable player awards.
With this year's class, there are now 65
former athletes, coaches and administrators
who have been inducted into the University's
Athletic Hall of Fame.

of experts from the National Football Foun-
dation and College Hall of Fame, Inc., and
Burger King Corporation. The University's
general scholarship fund will receive a

Supports Athletics
Nearly 700 alumni and friends are con-
tributors to the Great Dane Athletic Fund.
However, three donors recently made ma-
jor gifts to the Campaign for Albany in sup-
port of athletics.
Bruce Dey ‘80, '82 and Steve Dey ‘82
made a joint gift commitment to endow an
athletic scholarship which will generate a
$1,000 per year award for well-rounded stu-
dent-athletes.
The Class of '95 made a gift to install
the fence enclosing Varsity Field, the
University's soccer and lacrosse field. The

(Men’s Basketball)
MANCHESTER, N.H. -- Junior guard Shawon Moncrief scored 14 of his 19 points in the
second half to lead New Hampshire College past Albany, 87-66, in a New England
Collegiate Conference game on Sunday afternoon at NHC Field House.
NHC led 12-11 with 14:45 remaining in the first half when a fire alarm sounded, and
the gym was cleared. Following a 15-minute delay, Scott Smith’s four points sparked an
11-3 run capped by Orlando Ranson’s 10-footer for a 23-14 NHC advantage. New
Hampshire (7-1, NECC 3-0) increased their lead to 45-31 at the half, after 7-of-12 three-
point shooting in the period.
“The fire alarm kind of took the edge off,” said UA head coach Richard “Doc” Sauers.
“They took it to us after that. Their two best players (Ranson, Smith) didn’t particularly
hurt us, but we didn’t do a good job of defending their three-point shooters.”
The Penmen canned 12-of-17 three-point attempts, shot 57.9 percent (33-57) overall
in the game, and placed all five starters in double figures.
Albany (4-2, NECC 2-2) pulled to within eight, 60-52, on Charles Paul’s dunk with
11:30 to play. But NHC, ranked 18th in Division II during the pre-season, used a 15-6
spurt to take control.
Darrin Jahnel (Schalmont H.S.) sank a school-record eight three-pointers in scoring a
career- and game-high 25 points. The sophomore guard was 8-of-11 from the floor, all
three-point attempts, and added five assists and three steals. The previous UA record
was six three-point goals, held by Andrew Goodemote, now an assistant coach at
Albany. Andre Duncan chipped in with 13 points, and tied a personal-best with five
blocked shots.
