Comments: Statements made today by University at Albany
administrators with regard to State Supreme Court Judge Lawrence E.
Kahn's ruling concerning the University's varsity sports sponsorship...
James P. Doellefeld, Vice President for Student Affairs -- "We are very
pleased, and appreciate both of Justice Kahn's decisions. We believe they
were appropriate, consistent with the arguments as presented by our
attorney, Assistant Attorney General Ellen Messina, and with our previously-
Stated position regarding the right of a University President to make
University policy. We thank Judge Kahn, Assistant Attorney General
Messina, and SUNY Counsel Marti Anne Ellerman."
Dr. Milton E. Richards, Director of Athletics -- "From the beginning, the
University's goal has been to achieve gender equity and sponsor an
outstanding intercollegiate athletics program, while operating within a
restrictive financial environment. Judge Kahn has affirmed that we have
done this.
It is now time for us to move forward. We regret having been involved
in a legal action that involved University at Albany students. We look
forward to a future of cooperation with student government, and stand ready
to do whatever we can to help students who competed in the affected sports
to continue to participate at the club level, if they so choose."

ALBANY, N.Y. - Andrew Goodemote, recently the men's junior varsity head basketball coach at the
University at Albany, has been selected as interim varsity assistant coach for the 1995-96 season as head
coach Richard Sauers announced today. His duties include recruiting, game and practice preparation,
and supervising the conditioning program.
Goodemote, a native of Gloversville, N.Y., has been a part-time member of Albany's coaching staff

Goodemote, 29, was a standout guard on Albany's 1990 NCAA Tournament team, when he averaged
11.4 points, 2.9 rebounds and 2.6 assists as a senior. He also played on the 1987 squad, which reached
the ECAC championship final. Goodemote, who had a brief stint as a professional basketball player for
the Great Western Oil Plymouth Raiders in England, earned a bachelor's degree in English with a minor in
education.
An all-state player at Gloversville High School, Goodemote averaged 27.6 points as a senior to lead
all scorers in Section Il, and was a member of the Adirondack team at the Empire State Games. He
replaces James Jones, who was recently named as an assistant coach at Yale University.

1995 SEASON OUTLOOK
The 1995 Albany football team
moves to the NCAA Division II level
for the first time this season. There
are nine returning starters on offense
and defense, but there are also nine
new opponents on the schedule.
The Great Danes are on the road
the opening three weeks of the
season, and face Division |-AA
programs in Dayton and Central
Connecticut during that stretch.
"| am cautiously optimistic,” says
veteran coach Bob Ford, who has 38
lettermen returning. "There is
enough personnel in the program
that we have a fighting chance."
The Albany offense, which was
No. 1 among Upstate New York
Division Ill teams at nearly 390 yards
per game last season, is experi-
enced at most positions.
"It's a veteran group that we have
to feel fairly pleased with," Ford says.
The offensive line, tight end, fullback,
tailback and quarterback all have
starting and game experience. Our
biggest concern will be at flanker and
split end."
Albany's defense is also bol-
stered by seasoned personnel, but
Coach Ford wants more consistency
from this group.
"If you looked at last year, we
showed an inability to stop the run
and at times were vulnerable to the
big play," offers Ford, who has 137
career victories in 26 seasons as a
head coach. "Defense is certainly a
unit activity, and we need to play well
as a unit."
The kicking game was a deciding
factor in three games a year ago. A
three-man competition at both punter
and place-kicker in the preseason
has the coaching staff feeling better
about the rigors of the program's first
Division Il schedule.
ALBANY BY POSITIONS
QUARTERBACKS: Thefreeze-
option attack is in good hands with
sophomore Joe Savino, the 1994
ECAC Upstate New York Rookie of
the Year. The 5'9', 170-pound
quarterback is an effective thrower
and has good running ability.
Savino, who accounted for 1,801
yards in total offense and set four
single-season records, was the top-
rated signal-caller in the region with
a 130.6 efficiency rating. He completed
114 of 222 passes for 1,742 yards and
12 touchdowns.
"At this point in his career, he is far in
advance of any quarterback we have had
in the program," Ford states. "He
provides the type of leadership that you
need to be effective in the college game,
and does some things that go far beyond
coaching."
Sophomores Tommy Starr (5-11,
170) and Luke Byrnes (6-0, 185) will
battle three freshman recruits behind
Savino. Starr completed all seven of his
pass attempts in limited action last fall.
RUNNING BACKS: The Great Danes
are blessed with a trio of runners who ran
for 1,913 yards and 17 touchdowns last
season as a group.
Senior tailback Otis Bellamy (5-9,
205), considered the best athlete on the
team, should expect to see the ball more
often. He rushed for 719 yards, caught
15 passes for 107 yards, and averaged
24.4 yards per kickoff return. Bellamy's
1,338 all-purpose yards is the second
highest total in school history.
"Otis is a franchise player with his
breakaway speed, excellent hands, and
tremendous desire to excel," Ford says.
"We probably did not get the ball in his
hands as many times as we should last
year, and we may even use him at times
as a defensive back with his athleticism."
Victor Freeman (5-9, 210) and
Jeremy Kachejian (5-7, 180) area
contrast in fullbacks, but will share the
load for the second straight season.
Kachejian ran for 642 yards and six TDs,
While Freeman gained 552 yards and
scored seven times.
"Victor is a power-type back, and a
fairly decent blocker," Ford says. "Jeremy
is smaller, but deceivingly good for a guy
who does not have size or speed."
Also look for talented sophomore
Frank Coluccio (5-9, 195), who sat out
last season after transferring from
Springfield College.
RECEIVERS: The receiving corps is a
concern for the coaches. The school's
all-time leading receiver Andy Shein was
the team's "go-to player" in 1994, and has
graduated.
Senior split end Ed Richard (6-0, 185)
is the top returnee, after hauling in 13
receptions for 218 yards and two touch-
downs. He has big-play capabilities, and
averaged 20.4 yards per kickoff return.
Co-Captain Nick Cremona (78), a GTE
Academic All-Amenca candidate, is a
three-year starter at center.
Behind Richard is a group of
unproven freshmen and transfers.
A three-way battle at flanker is
expected. Sophomores Dan Gmelin
(5-11, 180) and Heath Mullen (6-3,
200) will get an opportunity to
present their wares. Brian Cafalone
(6-1, 190) has the experience of
playing two years at Hudson Valley
Community College.
TIGHT ENDS: Albany's present
and future at this position are
represented in junior Bob Thorne (6-
3, 215) and sophomore Seth
Thomas (6-4, 230).
"We have two kids who can step
on the field, and both are excellent
receivers," Ford states. "Thorne
became an integral part of our
offense, and is capable of moving to
wideout. Although he may have been
flustered in his first year, Seth
showed he has great hands."
UA's top returning receiver,
Thorne caught 24 passes for 312
yards, while Thomas added seven
receptions for 101 yards.
OFFENSIVE LINE: Desite two-
time All-America Scott Turrin's
departure, the Great Danes have five
offensive linemen returning with
starting experience.
Senior guard Rich Tallarico (5-8,
255) and senior center Nick
Cremona (6-0, 260) will play together
for the third consecutive year.
Tallarico, a national second team
GTE Academic All-America, is skillful
as a pulling, trapping guard, and is
