Albany, N.Y. — Freshman midfielder Maria Ferrucci set a single-game scoring record
with six goals and three assists to lead Albany to a 20-4 victory over Siena on Friday at
Varsity Field.
Albany (3-2) held a 3-2 lead midway through the first half, before Ferrucci scored
three consecutive times. Jess Spadafora, who had four goals, converted a spinning
shot from in front of the cage to give her club an 8-2 advantage with 6:18 left in the
period.
The Great Danes, who led 9-3 at halftime, opened the final stanza with seven
unanswered goals. Ferrucci, whose nine points was one more than the previous school
mark held by Debbie August (1996) and Dawn DiMicco (1998), scored twice and
assisted on two other goals in that stretch.
DiMicco, a junior midfielder, tied another Albany single-game standard with six
assists, while freshman goalkeeper Michelle Romanofski (Guilderland H.S.) had seven
saves in her first start. Cynthia Gutierrez had two goals and two assists for Siena (0-4).

The Great Danes jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the nightcap, as Checksfield hit his
sixth homer of the season, a two-run blast in the third inning. First baseman Jeff
Rossiter, who had an RBI double, Mike Kuebler, and Rob Ryan (Shenendehowa H.S.)
each had two hits. Mark Zacharczyk improved his record to 3-1, allowing four runs on
seven hits.
Stony Brook (13-5) had won five of its previous six starts, and was led by catcher
Craig Ansman, who finished 4-for-7 with two home runs on the day.

West Point, N.Y. —- Brooke Rubin won at first single and first doubles to lead Providence
to an 8-1 victory over Albany on Saturday at Army’s Lichtenberg Tennis Center.
Rubin defeated Samantha Kramer in straight sets at No. 1 singles, and teamed
with Alison Carton for a pro-set triumph in doubles play. Albany's Jennifer Hahn
(Bethlehem Central H.S.) and Emily Gonzales posted an 8-6 pro-set win at third
doubles. Providence is 15-2, while Albany stands at 10-8.

Raleigh, N.C. — University at Albany’s Luis Soto finished 10" in the men’s long
jump at the Adidas Raleigh Relays on Friday at North Carolina State’s Paul H.
© Derr Track. More than 2,000 athletes representing 100 teams are competing in
this two-day meet.
Soto went 23-feet, 4-inches in his first outdoor competition of the year.
Jamorya Funderburk, of UNA-Sports Capital, won the event with a leap of 25-04,
while UNC-Charlotte’s Rephel Martin was second in 25-02.50.
Ronald Edmundson, who is entered in Saturday’s triple jump, placed sixth
in his 100-meter dash heat with a time of 11.37 seconds.

Albany, N.Y. — Sophomore Sarah Maida fired a one-hitter in the opener and shortstop
Valerie Terry (South Glens Falls H.S.) drove in the winning run in both games to lead
Albany to a doubleheader sweep over Stony Brook on Friday at Albany Field. The Great
Danes won the first game, 2-1, and the nightcap, 3-2.
Maida allowed just a third-inning single by Lauren Ruane and an unearned run in
the fourth, as she improved to 6-3 this season. Terry broke a 1-1 deadlock in the fifth
with an infield single that brought home lead-off hitter Kara Faraone.
In the second game, Albany (13-4) trailed 2-0, but rallied with a three-run frame.
Terry, who is hitting .312 this season, lined a two-run double into the left-field gap to put
her team ahead. Senior pitcher Jessica Hansen, who upped her record to 6-1,
scattered six hits to post her 40" career victory.
Second base Corrine Vish had three hits in the twinbill for Stony Brook, who fell
to 1-13 overall.

the Division | Independent Pitcher of the Week in women’s softball (March 20-26).
Hansen, a senior from Westtown, N.Y., allowed only six hits and struck out six
batters in a 3-2 win over Bucknell on March 26.
she has a 5-1 record this season with a 1.50 earned run average and 36
strikeouts. The Bucknell win also marked Hansen’s 39" career victory. Albany is
off to an 11-4 start in its first season as a NCAA Division | member and is home
against Stony Brook on Friday at 2:30.

SPRING FOOTBALL PRACTICE BEGINS ON SUNDAY, APRIL 2
Albany, N.Y. — The University at Albany football program begins spring practice on
Sunday, April 2. The first workout is slated for 9:00 a.m. The 15-session schedule
continues through Saturday, May 6, when the Great Danes hold an intrasquad
scrimmage at University Field.
Head coach Bob Ford has 35 letterwinners returning, including five starters on
offense and four on defense, from a team which posted a 7-2 record in its inaugural
NCAA Division I-AA campaign, and finished second in the Northeast Conference.
Albany was 17" nationally in scoring offense at 37.0 points per game.
“We have three primary objectives this spring,’ said Ford, who has a 165-102
record in 27 seasons with the Albany program. “We need to find a quarterback, identify
who will be in the rotation on both the offensive and defensive lines, and take a look at
the younger players in the secondary.”
Eric Williams and Michael Oliva combined for 1,995 passing yards and 22
touchdown throws in a two-quarterback system last year, but both players were seniors.
Ryan Roeder, Marcus Rotondi (Shenendehowa H.S.) and Ryan Diamond will get an
opportunity to show their skills during the spring.
All-NEC split end Chris Phillis (Saratoga Springs H.S.) led the Great Danes with
33 receptions for 635 yards and six touchdowns, and was also the team’s top punt
returner. Ben Kelcey, who rushed for 278 yards and two TDs, and caught 10 passes for
124 yards and two scores, was a nine-game starter at fullback. Left tackle J.T.
Herfurth, an all-conference choice, anchors the UA offensive line.
Albany loses seven starters on defense, including Mike Grever, the Football
Gazette Linebacker of the Year and NEC Defensive Player of the Year. Fortunately, the
Great Danes can still build around two All-NEC defensive backs in free safety Samson
Brown and cornerback Jelani Dandles (Bishop Maginn H.S.). Brown made 62 tackles
as a red-shirt freshman, while Dandles had 32 tackles and two interceptions. Davon
Jones (Albany H.S.), who had 20 tackles last year, is expected to start at defensive end.

Albany, N.Y. — Meghan McCarthy scored the go-ahead goal with one minute and 28
seconds remaining, as Marist rallied in the second half for a 12-10 victory over Albany on
Wednesday at Albany Field.
Trailing 10-8 with less than eight minutes left, Marist (1-4) drew even on a pair of
goals off free-position shots by Molly Hanley and Pamela Brown. McCarthy later
scored the game-winner on a pass from behind the cage by Meghan Prendergast.
McCarthy added her third goal of the afternoon with 43 seconds to play for insurance.
Albany (2-2) built an 8-2 lead with 7:26 remaining in the first half, as freshman
Maria Ferrucci scored twice in that stretch. However, Brown, who led all scorers with
four goals and two assists, directed the Red Foxes’ comeback. Brown's unassisted goal
brought her team within, 9-8, with 10:12 left in the contest.
Marist goalkeeper Christy Uellendahl had 13 saves, while Hanley, a freshman
midfielder, contributed two goals and one assist. Albany’s Andrea Esposito (Saratoga
Springs H.S.) had one goal and two assists.

Albany, N.Y. — Sophomore second base Audrey White doubled and scored in the sixth
inning of the nightcap, as Albany split a doubleheader with Bucknell on Sunday in the
Great Danes’ home opener at Albany Field. Albany won the second game, 3-2, but lost
the opener, 5-3 in 10 innings.
In the second contest, Bucknell (7-8) reversed a 2-0 deficit in the sixth with a RBI
double by Kristina Tan and Kelly Dugan’s run-scoring single. White led off the bottom
of the inning with a double to left field, and came across with the winning run on Stacy
Kowal’s groundout. Albany’s Jessica Hansen improved to 5-1 on the mound by
allowing six hits and recording six strikeouts.
In the first game, Albany (11-4) drew even at three apiece in the fifth on a RBI
single by Kara Faraone, who went 4-for-8 at the plate with two runs on the day. The
Bison broke the deadlock in extra innings with a two-run tenth. Charity Ford and
Stephanie Morgan each delivered RBI singles.

times to lead Albany to a doubleheader sweep over C.W. Post on Saturday at Varsity

Field.
Gibson scored twice in the first quarter, as Colgate (1-5) leaped to a 6-0 lead at
the start. Cihon, a junior midfielder, tallied his first goal of the afternoon midway through
the second period in leading the Red Raiders to a 8-1 halftime advantage.
Colgate’s Danny Grady added one goal and three assists. Mike Shelli and Mike
Arnone combined on 28 saves for the Great Danes, who fell to 0-3 this season.

Albany, N.Y. — Freshman midfielder Maria Ferrucci tied a season-high with four goals
and Jess Spadafora added three goals and three assists to lead Albany past Central
Connecticut State, 17-8, on Saturday at Varsity Field.
Albany (2-1) jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the opening 10 minutes, as Ferrucci and
Spadafora each scored twice. Junior midfielder Dawn DiMicco, who had one goal and
three assists, did all of her scoring in that outburst. Ferrucci later found the net on a
rebound off the goalkeeper’s initial save with four seconds remaining in the period for a
10-1 halftime advantage.
Sarah Creek led Central Connecticut State (0-3) with three goals, while Sue
Barraza scored twice. Goalkeeper Marcy Quackenbush recorded a season-best 19
saves.
Freshman attack Andrea Esposito (Saratoga Springs H.S.) handed out three
assists for the Great Danes, who had eleven players in the scoring column.

Albany, N.Y. — Senior Rob Ryan (Shenendehowa H.S.) blasted a three-run home
run, capping off a six-run sixth inning as Albany defeated Canisius 9-1 Friday
afternoon at Varsity Field.
Albany (2-8-1) trailed 1-0 midway through the game, but responded in the
sixth with six runs on four hits. Mike Steinberg led off the inning with a solo home
run, the first of his career. After a Jim Lovett (Colonie H.S.) triple, Steve
Checksfield belted a two-run double to give Albany a 3-1 lead. Ryan then
stepped to the plate three batters later and hit his homer to right center field.
Canisius (2-9) had a chance to get back into the game, but stranded the
bases loaded in the seventh inning.
Eddie Scott and Michael Tecklenberg each added home runs for the
Great Danes. Tecklenberg, who hit his first career home run in only his seventh
career at bat, connected on a two-run shot in the eighth. Albany starter Mark
Zacharczyk pitched a complete game, allowing one run on eight hits with seven
strikeouts.

CENTER FIELDER MICHAEL OLIVA OUT FOR THE SEASON
Albany, N.Y. — Senior center fielder Michael Oliva will miss the remainder of the season
with a facial injury as head baseball coach Jon Mueller announced today. Oliva was
struck by a fastball in last Sunday’s nightcap of a doubleheader at New York Tech. He
suffered fractures to the orbital area and cheekbone.
Oliva, a .351 career hitter, was a starter in all nine games this spring, and had a
.353 batting average with nine runs, nine RBI, three stolen bases and four doubles. In
© addition, he shared the starting quarterback duties in leading Albany to a 7-2 record in its
inaugural Division I-AA football campaign last fall.

Albany, N.Y. — Laura Walls and Jess Spadafora each scored in overtime, as Albany
rallied for a 17-15 victory over Holy Cross in the Great Danes’ home opener on Tuesday
afternoon at Albany Field.
Holy Cross (1-4) broke a 12-12 deadlock with three consecutive goals. Carrie
Phelan scored back-to-back goals to break the tie, before Ginny Halloran gave her club
a 15-12 lead with 7:44 remaining.
Albany (1-1) scored twice in the final two minutes to force an extra period.
Amanda Heller found the net on a free-position shot, and then Spadafora tallied from
the right side on a crossing pass from Dawn DiMicco with 50 seconds to play.
Walls, who had four goals put the Great Danes ahead with one minute and 15
seconds elapsed into overtime off a free-position play. Spadafora scored her fourth goal
of the day for insurance.
The Crusaders’ Jen Amendola led all scorers with six goals, while Beth Woelfel
added three goals and one assist. Albany goalkeeper Kim Martini made 20 saves,
including five in the overtime session, and midfielder Maria Ferrucci had a career-high
four goals.

New York Tech (2-3) snapped a 2-2 tie in the second game with a six-run third

Columbia, S.C. — University at Albany’s Ronald Edmundson and Luis Soto won the
men's long jump and triple jump, respectively, at South Carolina’s Weems Baskin Sprint
Classic on Saturday.
Edmundson, competing in his first outdoor meet this season, went 47-feet, 5.75-
inches to edge Corey Simpson for the triple jump title. Simpson was second with a leap
of 47-3.75. Soto posted a mark of 23-6 en route to a first-place finish in the long jump.
Albany assistant track coach Geoffrey York, a Troy High School graduate, won
the 110-meter high hurdles in 13.88 seconds.

Springfield, Mass. — Senior midfielder Tracey Kelusky had three goals and one assist to
lead unbeaten Hartford to a 14-11 victory over Albany on Saturday afternoon at
Springfield College’s Benedum Field. The Hawks improved to 3-0 this season, while
Albany is 0-2.
Kelusky, who did all of his scoring in opening two quarters, staked the Hawks to
an 11-7 halftime advantage. Brian LaMastro, who had two goals and two assists, and
Damian Cliffe each scored twice in the first half.
Sean McConaghy (Columbia H.S.) tied a career-high with four goals and added
two assists for the Great Danes. McConaghy, a senior midfielder, has 57 career goals.
Sal Massa scored three times to go with one assist, while goalkeepers Mike Shelli
(Shenendehowa H.S.) and Mike Arnone combined to stop 19 shots.

Troy, N.Y. — Connor Price and Schuyler Minert each had three goals and one assist to
lead Dartmouth past Albany, 15-10, in the Great Danes’ season opener on Wednesday
afternoon at Rensselaer’s Harkness Field.
Dartmouth (2-0) scored seven consecutive goals to break open a tight contest.
The Big Green led 6-5 late in the second quarter, but found the net twice in the final 17
seconds of the period. Scott Roslyn converted a crossing pass from Chris O’Hara,
before Minert hit the top corner after gaining a loose ball off the artificial grass surface.
Price and Georges Dyer each scored twice, as Dartmouth tallied five times in the
opening six minutes of the third quarter. Price’s unassisted goal completed the run, and
staked his team to a commanding 13-5 advantage.
Albany's Sean McConaghy (Columbia H.S.) and Matt Duball each scored three
goals, while Dan Small added two goals and two assists. Goalkeeper Mike Shelli
(Shenendehowa H.S.) made 16 saves. O’Hara finished with one goal and three assists
for the Big Green, who opened their schedule with a 10-7 win over Colgate on March 4.

Albany (0-1) on the scoreboard with just over 20 minutes left in the opening half. The

run, as Albany crossed the plate five times in the final inning and posted a 7-6 victory
over UNC-Charlotte Friday at Phillips Field. Albany improved its record to 1-6, while

Charlotte last season.

RBI in leading Davidson to a 22-7 victory over Albany on Wednesday afternoon at

double and a Steve Lizza sacrifice fly. Davidson (12-8) responded with 14 runs over the

UNIVERSITY AT ALBANY NAMES JOANNA TOMASINO WOMEN’S SOCCER COACH
ALBANY, N.Y. -- University at Albany Interim Director of Athletics Gail Cummings-Danson
announced today the hiring of Joanna Tomasino as head women’s soccer coach.
Tomasino, the eighth coach in the program's history, will move into a position that was
recently elevated to full-time status.
Tomasino was previously the head coach at Indiana University of Pennsylvania for
three years. She led the NCAA Division II program to a 9-8-1 record in 1999, including a 6-3-
1 mark in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference. Four IUP players were named to the
all-conference team, while one earned All-Northeast Region recognition by the National
soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA).
From 1992-97, Tomasino was an assistant soccer coach at SUNY-Brockport. The
Golden Eagles posted 53 victories during five seasons with the program, and captured the
1995 New York State championship with a school-record 16-4-2 record.
Tomasino, 29, has also been an assistant with the Pennsylvania West Olympic
Development Program for both the girls’ under-14 and under-19 squads, and coached the
Pittsford Mustangs club team in the Monroe County Premier League.
A native of Pittsford, N.Y., Tomasino received her B.A. in English with a minor in
psychology from the University of Rochester. She captained the Yellow Jackets to the 1991
NCAA Division II] national championship final. A four-year starter, Tomasino earned NSCAA
All-Northeast Region honors and was a two-time all-conference selection.
Tomasino has played on the professional level the past four years with the United
Soccer Leagues’ Rochester Ravens, who compete in the W-1 Division.
Albany's 19-sport intercollegiate athletics program for men and women has upgraded
to the NCAA Division | level in 1999-2000. Women’s soccer has been sponsored as a varsity
sport since 1979.

Greensboro, N.C. — Senior outfielder Jeff Smith belted a three-run homer in the
eighth inning to lead UNC-Greensboro to its fifth straight win with a 10-5 victory
over visiting Albany on Tuesday at UNCG Baseball Stadium.
UNC-Greensboro (10-5) led 5-3 in the eighth, when Smith homered over the
left-field fence. Jeremy Purcell followed with a solo blast, his sixth of the season.
The Spartans hit four home runs on the afternoon, as Mike Krekorian and
Kyle Tasco each smacked two-run shots in the fourth and fifth, respectively.
Albany’s Michael Oliva had two hits, including a home run, and scored
twice, while Steve Checksfield singled three times and added one RBI. The
Great Danes, who fall to 0-4, are at Davidson on Wednesday.

Fort Myers, Fla. - Sophomore pitcher Sarah Maida won for the third time this
season, as Albany split a pair of games in Florida on Tuesday. The Great Danes
defeated Saint Anselm, 6-1, and lost to Monmouth, 3-1, at Lee County Sports
Complex.

Maida struck out five and walked none, as she scattered five hits in the first
game. The Great Danes reversed a 1-0 deficit with a five-run fourth inning.
Stephanie Strauss, who had two hits and three RBI, keyed the frame with a two-
run single.
In the second contest, Albany (6-1) took a 1-0 lead, when shortstop Valerie
Terry (South Glens Falls H.S.) tripled and scored on a sacrifice fly by Audrey
White. Monmouth (8-0) went in front with two runs in the third on Chrissy
Didieo’s RBI single and Sandy Morris’ sacrifice fly. Pitcher Scarlett Reuter
allowed just two hits and posted six strikeouts.

CETNAR AND HAGGARTY NAMED TO ALL-INDEPENDENT TEAM
Edinburg, Texas — University at Albany’s Todd Cetnar and Matthew Haggarty
have been selected to the Division | All-Independent Team in men’s basketball as
announced today by the association’s office. Cetnar was named to the first team,
while Haggarty earned second-team recognition.
Cetnar, a 6-foot senior guard from Amsterdam, N.Y., led the Great Danes in
scoring (16.1 ppg), assists (4.2 pg), steals (2.1 pg) and free throw percentage
(.820). He scored in double figures on 22 occasions, including eight games with
20-plus points.
He finished his career ranked ninth on the school’s all-time scoring list with
1,345 points, and was fifth in assists (367), second in steals (188) and third in
three-point field goals (215).
Haggarty, a 6-foot-3 senior from Wayland, Mass., averaged 13.7 points and
3.1 rebounds, and was among the top-10 NCAA Division | leaders in 3-point field
goals made (3.36 pg). He established UA’s single-season record for 3-pointers
made (94), and also broke the career mark with 256.
Haggarty, who shot 43 percent from 3-point range this year, scored in twin
figures 21 times, including a season-best 23 points against both Rutgers and
Delaware State. He is 16" on Albany’s career scoring chart with 1,096 points, and
set the school standard for games played (110) in his final contest at Colgate on
Feb. 29. Albany finished with an 11-17 record in its first Division | season.
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi’s Michael Hicks was named the Independent
Player of the Year. Defensive Player of the Year went to John Braxton, of
Texas-Pan American, while TAMU-Corpus Christi’s Ronnie Arrow was voted the
top coach.

Cambridge, Mass. — University at Albany’s Ronald Edmundson eclipsed his own
school record in the triple jump to finish eighth at the 79" annual Intercollegiate
Association of Amateur Athletes of America (IC4A) indoor track and field
championships on Sunday at Harvard University’s Gordon Track & Tennis Facility.
Edmundson, who went 49-feet, 4.50-inches, set the school’s standard for
the third time this season. He previously jumped 48-09 at the USAT&F New
England championships on February 18.
Luis Soto placed third in the IC4A long jump on Saturday, when he
shattered another UA record with a leap of 23-11.75.

Wilmington, N.C. — Right-hander Jack Temple recorded 10 strikeouts in the
opener to lead UNC-Wilmington to a non-conference doubleheader sweep over
Albany on Sunday at Brooks Field. The Seahawks won the first game, 9-5, and
the second, /-1.
Temple allowed two runs and six hits over seven innings to even his record
at 1-1 this season. UNC-Wilmington (10-4) jumped out a 6-0 lead in the third, as
David McPherson drove across three runs with a pair of singles. Senior center
fielder Michael Oliva had a three-run double for the Great Danes.
In the nightcap, the Seahawks scored seven times in the second. Chip
Grawey belted a two-run homer over the left field fence, and infielder David Ange
added a two-run single. Steve Checksfield smacked a solo home run, the 23" of
his career, for Albany (0-3).

Cape Coral, Fla. — Freshman Sarah Maida fired a no-hit shutout in the first game,
and senior Jessica Hansen pitched four strong innings in the second contest to
lead Albany to a pair of victories in Florida on Sunday. The Great Danes, who
improved to 5-0 this season, defeated Dowling, 1-0, and Mount St. Clare, 9-1, at
Cape Coral Sports Complex.
@ Maida picked up her second win in three days by recording nine strikeouts
and two walks against Dowling. Stacy Kowal tripled to left field to score freshman
April Kuryluk (Albany H.S.) with the game's lone run in the fifth inning.
Hansen struck out three and allowed no runs over four innings to earn her
36" career victory versus Mount St. Clare, a NAIA school located in Clinton, lowa.
The Great Danes plated seven runs in the second, as Audrey White and
Stephanie Strauss each delivered RBI singles.

Wilmington, N.C. -- Sophomore third baseman David McPherson singled in the
winning run with the bases loaded in the ninth inning to lift UNC-Wilmington to a 4-3
victory over Albany in the Great Danes' season opener on Saturday afternoon at
Brooks Field.
Albany (0-1) rallied from a 3-0 deficit in the ninth. Michael Oliva led off the
frame with a double and later scored on a passed ball, before Steve Lizza drew his
club even with a two-out, two-run single down the third base line.
UNC-Wilmington (8-4) came back in its last at-bat, as Dave McKenna walked to
open the inning. He would come across with the game-winner on McPherson's single
through the left side with one out.
Albany catcher Rob Ryan (Shenendehowa H.S.) went 3-for-3 at the plate, while
starting pitcher Scott Tower scatttered five hits and recorded six strikeouts in seven
innings of work. The loss spoiled the debut of head coach Jon Mueller, a Stillwater
H.S. product and a standout with the Albany-Colonie Diamond Dogs. The Great Danes
and UNC-Wilmington will play a doubleheader on Sunday.

Cambridge, Mass. -- University at Albany's Luis Soto set a school record in the long
jump to finish third at the 79th annual IC4A indoor track and field championships on
Saturday at Harvard University's Gordon Track & Tennis Facility.
Soto's third-place effort was the highest finish by a Great Dane athlete in an
IC4A meet. His mark of 23-feet, 11.75-inches shattered the previous record held by
Anthony Davenport, who went 23-09 in 1995. Ronald Edmundson will compete in the
triple jump on Sunday.
At the ECAC Division | women's championships, Andrea Viger (Granville
Central H.S.) was 15th in the 5,000-meter run in 17:44.97.

Fort Myers, Fla. -- Sophomore infielder Audrey White drove in the winning run in the
first game and scored a pair of runs in the second contest, as Albany won twice In
Florida on Saturday. The Great Danes defeated Findlay, 1-0, and Notre Dame (Ohio),
5-0, at Lee Sports Complex.
Against Findlay, White's groundout to the shortstop scored Kara Faraone and
broke a scoreless deadlock in the sixth inning. Faraone reached on an error, and
moved to third on a double by shortstop Valerie Terry (South Glens Falls H.S.).
Freshman hurler Sarah Maida struck out three and walked three.
In the second game, Albany (3-0) used six walks by Notre Dame starter Susan
Saalfield to post a 5-0 lead after three innings. White scored twice and added a stolen
bases in that stretch. Pitcher Amy Hawk fired a two-hit shutout, the first of her career,
by recording five strikeouts.
The Great Danes opened the season on Friday evening with a 4-0 victory over
Capital in Cape Coral, Fla. Jessica Hansen scattered four hits and struck out four en
route to her 35th career win on the mound.

Buchanan and Tucker Named To All-Ilndependent Hoop Teams
Stony Brook, N.Y. — University at Albany’s Megan Buchanan and Liz Tucker have been
selected to the 1999-2000 All-Independent Team as announced today by the association's
office. Buchanan secured first-team honors and received the second-most votes while Tucker
earned a spot on the second team. Both athletes led Albany to a 12-15 record in its inaugural
season at the NCAA Division | level.
Buchanan, a 5-foot-11 senior forward from Arkport, N.Y., finished the season averaging
15.0 points, 4.3 rebounds, 1.4 assists and 1.4 steals. With 1,093 career points, she sits third on
the school's all-time list. She became Albany’s all-time three-point leader (124) in Albany's 64-
63 victory at Bucknell on Feb. 23. As her team’s leading scorer, Buchanan scored in double
figures in 22 of 27 games.
Tucker, a 5-foot-10 junior guard from Plaistow, N.H., averaged 12.7 points, 7.4 rebounds,
3.8 assists and 2.3 steals. She led the team in rebounds (199), assists (102) and steals (63).
After three seasons, Tucker is fourth on the school’s all-time free throws list (215), eighth in both
assists (261) and rebounds (529) and ninth in scoring (837). She was named Independent
Player of the Week twice this season.
Stony Brook freshman Julie Szabo was named Independent Player of the Year while
Belmonts Tony Cross earned Coach of the Year honors. Kristin Rogers of Texas A&M-
Corpus Christi secured the Rookie of the Year award.
