UNIVERSITY AT ALBANY TRACK & FIELD INVITATIONAL
SET FOR FRIDAY AND SATURDAY
ALBANY, N.Y. -- The University at Albany will host the sixth annual Albany Track & Field Invitational this
Friday and Saturday (April 19-20) at University Field. The Great Danes are the defending men's champion,
while Ithaca College captured the women's title in 1995. Athletes from 18 schools, including Siena, St. Rose,
Rensselaer and Union, will compete in the two-day meet.
Albany, which is ranked ninth in the latest men's NCAA Division II poll, and tenth among the nation's
top women's teams, has several local high school standouts in the field. Mary Ingram (Albany H.S.) has
already qualified for the Division II national championships on May 23-25 in the 400-meter intermediate
hurdles, and is the favorite in that event. Janna Johnston, a freshman from Shenendehowa High, has won
three long jump competitions this spring, while Tonya Dodge (Granville Central) set a school record in the
@ 3,000-meter run last weekend. Dennis King (Notre Dame Bishop Gibbons) was first in the Division 2 1,500
meters at the '96 Florida State Relays, and sophomore Jayson Vazquez (Amsterdam) is a top entrant in the
men's 100-meter high hurdles and 400-hurdles.
Several 1995 Albany Invitational champions are in the field, including three distance runners from the
College of St. Rose. Nora O'Heaney (1,500), Tina Busch (800) and Deborah Springer (5,000) all return to
defend their individual titles. Ithaca's Scott Rowe set an invitational record in the 100-meter dash (10.70
seconds) last year, but will be challenged by two area college football running backs this time around.
Rensselaer's Krishaun Gilmore and Union's Shuron Morton are both entered in the 100- and 200-meter
events.
Non-college athletes are also scheduled to compete on both days. Kevin Collins, the top American
finisher in last Monday's 100th Boston Marathon, is entered in the men's 10,000-meter run (Friday, 8:00
p.m.). Collins placed 30th in Boston (2:18:54) and was 18th in the marathon at the U.S. Olympic Trials in
February. Geoffrey York, of Troy, N.Y., a five-time NCAA Division II| champion, will run in the 110-hurdles,
while Schenectady's Lori Hewig will compete in Friday's 3,000 meters.
Friday's schedule begins at 4:00 p.m. with the finals of the pole vault, hammer throw, distance-
running, and racewalk events, and the first day of competition in the men's decathlon and women's
heptathlon. Saturday's slate starts at 10:00 a.m. with the long jump, and continues through the men's 1,600-
meter relay final, which is scheduled for 5:05 p.m.

UNIVERSITY AT ALBANY BEGINS FIRST EVER SPRING FOOTBALL PRACTICE
ALBANY, N.Y. -- University at Albany head coach Bob Ford will welcome 33 letterwinners, including 12
starters, back from last year's team, as the Great Danes begin their first ever spring football practice this
Friday afternoon. The first session on April 19 is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. Ford and his staff will conduct 10
non-contact practices, as provided for by Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) rules, over the next
two weeks.
Albany, which posted a 3-7 record last fall in its first NCAA Division II season, will focus on replacing
key personnel on the offensive and defensive lines during the spring. "We lost some valuable performers on
both lines, so much of our time will be spent on evaluating personnel," says Ford, who has a 130-95 record in
23 seasons as Albany's head coach. "I also think being together in the spring for the first time will unify our
team."
On offense, junior quarterback Joe Savino, bothered by shoulder problems last season, is back at the
controls. He passed for 1,402 yards and 11 touchdowns as a sophomore, and is already second in career
passing yards (3,144) and third in total offense (3,220) on the school's all-time lists. Eric Williams, a 6-foot-2
redshirt freshman, should press for playing time. Williams was impressive in his only appearance against
Union, before a broken thumb in the second quarter ended his season.
Senior flanker Bob Thorne, who caught 29 passes for 502 yards and six touchdowns in his second
year as a regular, leads a talented receiving corps. Junior tailback Frank Coluccio (Bishop Maginn H.S.) is
the top returning rusher with 306 yards. Senior guard David Baranska (Ravena-Coyemans-Selkirk) and
sophomore tackle Loren Baker (Gloversville) are the only linemen with starting experience.
The Great Danes switched over to a 4-3-4 alignment on defense in 1995, and the result was a more
aggressive unit. Senior Anthony Vitti, an ECAC-IFC All-Star at roverback, led UA in tackles with 72, while
senior free safety Ted Bearor (Greenwich Central) added a team-high four interceptions.
Other local high school standouts who were significant contributors on last year's team are
Niskayuna's John Moskov (senior linebacker) and Matt Moskov (senior offensive guard), and senior place-
kicker Sean King (Stillwater).

ALBANY RECEIVES COMMITMENTS FROM TWO SCHOLASTIC HOOP STARS
Todd Cetnar and Kris Zeisler will play for Great Danes in 1996-97
ALBANY, N.Y. -- The University at Albany has received signed commitments from two men's
high school basketball standouts as head coach Richard Sauers announced today. Todd
Cetnar, a 6'0", 165-pound guard from Amsterdam, N.Y. (Amsterdam H.S.), and Kris Zeisler, a
6'6", 215-pound forward from Tabernacle, N.J. (Shawnee H.S.), were awarded scholarships to
play basketball in 1996-97.
Cetnar, a first-team all-area selection by both the A/bany Times-Union and Daily Gazette,
averaged 27.1 points, 7.0 assists, 6.0 rebounds and 4.0 steals per game as a senior. A two-
time all-Big 10 League choice, Cetnar finished as his school's all-time leading scorer with 1,621
points, and set career records in assists (5/7) and steals (296). He scored 30-plus points on
10 occasions during the 1995-96 season, including a career-high 38 against Schenectady, and
established a single-season mark with 78 three-point field goals.
Cetnar, who was coached by his father, Rick, in high school, led Amsterdam to a 15-8
record this past season. As a junior, he averaged 21.0 points per game, when the Bears
reached the state's Class B championship game and won the Section II title.
Zeisler averaged 10.0 points and 12.0 rebounds as a senior, and was named third team
all-South Jersey. His Shawnee High team won the Group IV state championship for the second
straight year, and was ranked 17th nationally by USA Today with a 27-4 record. The
Renegades suffered an overtime loss to St. Anthony's, the nation's top scholastic boys' team, in
the New Jersey Tournament of Champions final. Zeisler, a two-year starter, averaged 6.0
points and 8.0 rebounds per game as a junior, when Shawnee finished 30-1 overall. His
teammate Malik Allen, a 6-foot-9 center, signed last fall with Villanova University.
"We expect that Todd (Cetnar) will contribute right away, and fight it out with Bob Markel
for the point guard position," Sauers said. "He runs the fastbreak well, pushes the ball in
transition, and gets it to the open man. Everyone knows he can score, but his scoring is
secondary to the other things he can do for our team. Kris (Zeisler) adds muscle to our
frontline, and is a great jumper and a very good short-range shooter. He has not yet reached
his full potential as a player."
Albany recently completed its first season as an NCAA Division II program, and is a
member of the New England Collegiate Conference.
