THREE ALBANY ATHLETES NAMED USWLA DIVISION Il ALL-AMERICANS
University at Albany's Dawn DiMicco, Rafaela Nikas and Allisson Pennington have
been named to the United States Women's Lacrosse Association Division Il All-America
team. Each athlete earned first-team USWLA honors, and received the same recognition
on last week's Brine/IWLCA All-America squad.
DiMicco, a sophomore midfielder, had 41 goals and 17 assists in leading Albany
(11-4) to its second ECAC championship appearance in the last three years. Nikas, the
team's leading-scorer, shattered a single-season record with 52 goals and tied the UA
standards for points (62). The senior midfielder finished her career second on the
school's all-time scoring list with 132 points (97 goals, 35 assists). Pennington, a
sophomore goalkeeper, had an 8.60 goals against average with a .626 save percentage.
WRIGHT AND JOHNSTON VOTED TO DISTRICT ACADEMIC ALL-AMERICA TEAM
Ben Wright (Averill Park H.S.) and Janna Johnston (Shenendehowa H.S.) have
been chosen to the GTE College Division District | Academic All-America Spring At-Large
teams, as voted by CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America).
Wright, a sophomore on the Albany track & field squad, was a first-team selection.
He has a 3.85 cumulative grade point average in business administration. Wright won his
second straight New England Collegiate Conference indoor mile, and posted a personal-
best 3:53.32 in the 1,500 at the Princeton Invitational during the outdoor season. He
moves on to the men's national ballot, and that team will be announced on June 16.
Johnston, a junior, earned second-team all-district honors with a 3.59 GPA in
mathematics with a double minor in physics and computer science. She received All-
East track honors in the heptathlon with a second-place finish at the ECAC Division |
outdoor championships, and was also an indoor All-East choice in the pentathlon.
Johnston won the NECC indoor high jump and was second in the long jump.-30-

TOM ALEXANDER NAMED FIRST TEAM ALL-AMERICAN IN LACROSSE
University at Albany's Tom Alexander (Guilderland H.S. / Altamont, N.Y.) has been
selected to the 1998 Division Il STX/USILA All-American lacrosse team as announced by
the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association. Alexander, a first-team
defenseman, will be honored at the All-American Banquet on Friday, June 12 at the
Crowne Plaza Hotel in Rochester.
Alexander, a 1997 second-team All-American, made his second consecutive
appearance on the Capital District College Lacrosse League All-Star team. He led a
nationally-ranked Albany defensive unit which allowed 7.83 goals per game, and was
second on the team with 48 groundballs. The Great Danes finished with an 8-4 record.
THREE ALBANY TRACK STANDOUTS EARN ALL-EAST RECOGNITION
Janna Johnston (Shenendehowa H.S. / Clifton Park, N.Y.) earned All-East honors
by finishing second in the women's heptathlon at last weekend's ECAC Division | outdoor
track & field championships at George Mason University in Virginia. Johnston totaled a
school-record 4,956 points in a field of 17 athletes, and was just behind ECAC champion
Carrie Strong, of Lafayette College, who scored 5,000. She also set an Albany record in
the high jump with a mark of 5-feet, 6-inches.
Xiomara Davila Diaz and Luis Soto also received All-East accolades. Davila Diaz
placed sixth in the ECAC women's 100-meter hurdles with a time of 14.25 seconds, while
Soto was seventh in the IC4A men's long jump (24-2.25).

Kelly Poynton Named to ECAC-North Softball All-Star Team
Checksfield and Trufant Chosen All-Northeast Region in Baseball
University at Albany's Kelly Poynton has been selected to the 1998 ECAC/Reebok
Division II North Softball All-Star Team. Poynton, a junior pitcher, makes her first
appearance on the 13-player all-star unit.
Poynton posted a 17-3 record with nine shutouts, including two no-hitters,, and was
ranked among the NCAA leaders in earned run average (1.06) and strikeouts (164). She
led Albany (32-9) to its first-ever New England Collegiate Conference championship and
an ECAC Mid-Atlantic tournament berth.
Poynton, the 1998 NECC Pitcher of the Year, has previously this spring been named
to the NCAA All-Northeast Region squad and was first-team all-conference.
KEKE
Steve Checksfield and Jason Trufant has been voted to the American Baseball
Coaches Association/Rawlings All-Northeast Region Team. Checksfield, a freshman
outfielder, and Trufant, a sophomore pitcher, were second-team selections.
Checksfield, the 1998 New England Collegiate Conference Rookie of the Year, and a
first-team AIl-NECC choice, led the Great Danes in hitting (.388 BA), runs (43), RBIs (41),
home runs (11) and slugging percentage (.775). He added nine doubles, four triples and
nine stolen bases.
Trufant was the Albany staff's ace with a 7-2 record and a 3.05 earned run average.
In 62.0 innings, he recorded three shutouts, five complete games and 53 strikeouts.
Albany (19-15) earned an ECAC tournament bid for the first time since 1994.

Three Albany Lacrosse Players Named Division II All-Americans
Dawn DiMicco Selected to the First Team for the Second Straight Year
Hanover, N.H. -- University at Albany's Dawn DiMicco has been named to the 1998
Division Il Brine/IWLCA All-America Team for the second consecutive season,
and is joined on the national women's lacrosse first team by the Great Danes'
leading-scorer Rafaela Nikas and goalkeeper Allisson Pennington.
DiMicco, a sophomore midfielder, had 41 goals and 17 assists and seta
single-season record with 157 groundballs in leading Albany, the nation's third-
ranked team, to an 11-4 record and its second ECAC championship appearance
in the last three years. She tied UA single-game records for goals (7) and points
(8) against Shippensburg in April.
Nikas, a senior midfielder, is a Brine All-American for the first time. She
shattered the school's single-season standard with 52 goals, and was among the
nation's leaders in scoring (4.13 points per game) and goals (3.47/game). Nikas
is second on Albany's all-time list with 132 points (97 goals, 35 assists).
Pennington had an 8.60 goals against average with a .626 save percentage
and 127 saves this spring. The sophomore netminder posted double-figure
saves in eight games, including 16 versus Gannon in the ECAC championship.

UNIVERSITY AT ALBANY ATHLETES AWARDED ECAC MERIT MEDALS
Liz Peck, Halim Wise and Darrin Jahnel Are Chosen
ALBANY, N.Y. -- The University at Albany's Liz Peck, Halim Wise and Darrin Jahnel have been selected to
receive Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Merit Medals as Director of Athletics Milt Richards
announced today. The awards are annually given to the school's top senior female and male student-
athletes who have shown excellence in the classroom and as competitive athletes during the current
academic year.
Peck, of Pawling, N.Y., earned first-team Division II All-America honors by the National Field Hockey
Coaches Association (NFHCA), and is a graduate student in the University's molecular biology doctoral
program. She received her bachelor's degree in biology with a minor in education last spring, and posted a
3.68 cumulative grade point average.
Peck, who has made 51 consecutive starts in the Albany midfield, led the Great Danes to the ECAC
neal poe and a school-record 17-2 campaign last fall. As a team captain for the third straight season,
she scored four goals and two assists. Peck, who was a second-team All-American in 1996, has twice been
chosen to the NFHCA national academic team. Last month, she was selected to the national GTE College
Division Fall-Winter At-Large Academic All-America first team.
Wise, a member of the track and field squad, and Jahnel, a guard on the basketball team, share the
the men's student-athlete award. Wise has a 3.29 GPA in a dual major of English and political science, while
Jahnel has a 3.25 in business administration with an emphasis in marketing management.
A native of Mount Vernon, N.Y., Wise is the New England Collegiate Conference indoor 500-meter
champion, and has qualified for this weekend's IC4A outdoor championships in the 400. He led Albany to its
second consecutive NECC indoor title, and currently holds four school records in individual and relay events.
Wise set the indoor 400 standard (48.68) with a seventh-place finish at IC4As.
Wise ran the anchor leg on the 4x100 relay which was fifth at the 1998 Penn Relays in IC4A event
(41.95), and finished second at the Princeton Invitational. He sprinted 48.29 in the 400 in early April at the
University of Connecticut's outdoor meet. Wise, a recent recipient of the Arthur Ashe Jr. Sport Scholar
Award, will be employed upon graduation by Chase Manhattan Bank.
A Schalmont High School graduate, Jahnel is the Albany basketball program's all-time leading three-
point field goal shooter. He led the Great Danes to an ECAC Division II tournament berth and a 19-8 record
in 1997-98, and became the 21st player in school history tc score 1,000 career points. He averaged 13.4
points and 3.3 rebounds as a senior, set single-season records for three-pointers made (88) and attempted
(230), and led the NECC in 3-point shooting (3.26 made/game).
Jahnel is first on UA's career charts with 246 three-point field goals and 627 attempts, and finished
17th on the all-time scoring list with 1,065 points. A four-time dean's list student, Jahnel plans to attend
graduate school in business.

ALBANY CAPTURES WALTER PETERSON PRESIDENT'S CUP
Great Danes Won Five Conference Championships in 1997-98
RINDGE, N.H. -- The University at Albany has captured the New England Collegiate
Conference's Walter Peterson President's Cup, recognizing a member school who
compiled the strongest overall record in all conference-sponsored sports during the
1997-98 academic year.
The Great Danes clinched the Peterson Cup by winning five NECC championships in
men's cross country, women's tennis, men's indoor track, women's indoor track and
softball, and tieing for second place in the men's basketball regular-season standings.
Albany accumulated 213 points, and were ahead of last year's overall winner, the
University of Massachusetts-Lowell. The River Hawks had 202 points, while Franklin
Pierce College was third with 186.
"This a major achievement for our intercollegiate athletics program," said Albany
Director of Athletics Milt Richards. "It is a reward for a job well done by our athletes,
coaches and administrators, who have not only met the challenges of Division II, but
excelled in the three years since we upgraded from Division Ill. The Peterson Cup award
is another example of the University's commitment to winning in all 19 varsity sports."
The final point standings for the Peterson Cup are based on each respective member
institution's finish in the conference standings during regular-season competition in six
sports and season-ending tournaments in eight sports.

Erie, Pa. -- Debra Wood and Stacey Reynolds each scored four times to lead Gannon to a
14-12 victory over Albany in the ECAC Division Il championship on Saturday afternoon.
The Lady Knights, who lost a 15-12 decision to Millerville in the ECAC final last year,
snapped a 5-5 halftime tie with three straight goals to take the lead for good. Wood, the
nation's leading scorer with 109 points, gave her club an 8-5 advantage when she found
the net with a free-position goal.
Albany (11-4) closed within 9-8 with 18:30 remaining as sophomore midfielder Dawn
DiMicco tallied one of her three goals on the day. Gannon (13-2), ranked second
nationally in the latest Brine/IWLCA poll, responded with three consecutive goals to take
control. Kristen Hayhurst scored with 15:33 left for a 12-8 lead, and the Lady Knights
secured their sixth straight win.
Rebecca Kaiser (Guilderland H.S.) had four goals and one assist to lead the Great
Danes, who were playing in the ECAC championship for the second time in the last three
years. Goalkeeper Allisson Pennington equaled a season-high with 18 saves.

Albany, N.Y. -- Janna Johnston (Shenendehowa H.S.) won the women's heptathlon to
wrap up the fourth annual Albany Spring Track and Field Classic on Saturday at
University Field.
Johnston scored 4,573 points to finish ahead of teammate Xiomara Davila Diaz, who
was second with 4,406. Diaz's performance qualified her for the ECAC Division |
championships in Fairfax, Virginia on May 21-24. Johnston had previously earned an
ECAC berth with her fifth-place standing at Penn Relays in April.
Forty-two of the 43 events in the meet was contested on Friday evening. Albany won
the men's championship, while Massachusetts-Lowell claimed the women's title.

Flushing, N.Y. -- Rain washed out the first day of competition at the ECAC Division II Mid-
Atlantic Softball Tournament. The four-team women's championship will now be
changed due to the weather from a double-elimination format to a single-elimination
event on Sunday.
Albany (32-9), the third seed, meets the No. 2 seed Queens (31-14) in the semi-final
round at 12 noon, while Dowling and Adelphi are scheduled for a 10:00 a.m. contest. The
winners will meet in the championship.

Albany, N.Y. -- Luis Soto was a double-winner in the high jump and long jump to lead
Albany to the men's title, while Deb Primeau captured the triple jump and long jump to
hand Massachusetts-Lowell the women's crown at the fourth annual Albany Spring Track
and Field Classic on Friday evening at University Field.
Soto, a junior from Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico, went a season-best 6-feet, 8-inches in
the high jump, and leaped 23-11 in the long jump. Albany scored 105 points in the team
competition, while Ithaca and Rensselaer followed behind in second with 53 apiece.
The Great Danes' Ronald Edmundson finished first in the triple jump (45-0.50), while
Rensselaer's Mike Pestilli garnered both the discus (156-11) and hammer (168-11) titles.
Primeau won the triple jump with a mark of 35-6, and was a winner in the long jump
(17-4.25). Her teammate, Tara Fay, was also a double-winner in the shot put and javelin.
Mass.-Lowell won the women's championship with 134 points, while the Great Danes
were second with 93.
Albany's Andrea Viger (Granville Central H.S.) became the second fastest women's
1,500 runner in school history with a winning time of 4:43.64, and was second in the
5,000. Ellakisha Williamson (Albany H.S.) sprinted 24.80 to capture the 200-dash, while
Tamirah Haywood won the 400-hurdles (1:05.35).

(ECAC Division Il Tournament)
Stony Brook, N.Y. -- Catcher Craig Ansman and infielder Jeff Fiermonte each drove in
four runs as Stony Brook eliminated Albany, 17-4, in the loser's bracket of the ECAC
Division Il Tournament at University Field on Friday afternoon.
Albany, the double-elminination championship's third seed, dropped a 4-1 decision
earlier in the day to Dowling, the No. 2 seed. Stony Brook (23-11-1), the top seed, and
host school, was upset in the first round by Southern Connecticut State, 6-1.
Stony Brook used a six-run second inning to snap a 3-3 tie against the Great Danes.
Ansman, the 1998 New England Collegiate Conference's player of the year, belted a
grand slam over the right field fence to key the frame. Gregg Foster had four hits and
scored four times for the Seawolves, while Albany's Heath Mullen (Greenwich Central) hit
a two-run homer in the second.
In the first game, pitcher Michel Dubriel scattered four hits and struck out eight to
pick up his third victory for Dowling (23-9). Albany's Steve Checksfield gave his club a 1-
0 lead in the first with an RBI single, but Stephen Lund followed in the bottom of the
inning with a two-run homer to left.
Pitcher Jason Trufant, who fell to 7-2 overall, allowed just four hits, while fanning five
and walking one for Albany, which ends its season with a 19-15 record.

ALBANY SPRING TRACK CLASSIC SET FOR FRIDAY
Albany, N.Y. -- The University at Albany will host the fourth annual Albany Spring Track
and Field Classic on Friday at University Field. More than 20 schools, including Albany,
St. Rose and Rensselaer, will have athletes compete in 22 men's and 23 women's events.
The one-day meet begins at 2:00 p.m. with the women's heptathlon, and concludes
with the men's and women's combined 10,000-meter run at 8:00 p.m.
Albany's Ellakisha Williamson (Albany H.S.) is the defending champion in the 100-
meter dash and 100-hurdles. Ben Wright (Averill Park) and Jayson Vazquez (Amsterdam)
were winners in the 1,500 and 400-hurdles, respectively, one year ago.
KELLY POYNTON CHOSEN ALL-NORTHEAST REGION IN SOFTBALL
Lowell, Mass. -- University at Albany's Kelly Poynton has been selected to the NCAA
Division Il All-Northeast Region team in softball. Poynton was named the 1998 New
England Collegiate Conference Pitcher of the Year, and to the AIl-NECC first team on
Wednesday.
A junior right-hander, Poynton posted a 17-3 record with a 1.06 earned run average,
nine shutouts, two no-hitters, and 164 strikeouts during the regular season. She leads
Albany (32-9) into this weekend's ECAC Division II Mid-Atlantic Tournament in Flushing,
New York.

KELLY POYNTON NAMED NECC SOFTBALL PITCHER OF THE YEAR
Five Albany Players Receive All-Conference Recognition
Rindge, N.H. -- University at Albany's Kelly Poynton has been selected as the 1998 New
England Collegiate Conference Pitcher of the Year in softball, while Chris Cannata was
chosen the conference's Coach of the Year in voting by the NECC's head coaches.
Poynton, a junior right-hander, posted a 17-3 record with a 1.06 earned run average,
nine shutouts, two no-hitters, and 164 strikeouts. She was named to the AIl-NECC first
team along with utility player Lisa deSousa, who was positioned at catcher, second base
and third base during the season. deSousa, a freshman, batted .313 with a team-leading
30 RBIs.
Senior Amy McGroty (Schalmont H.S.) was voted second-team all-conference at first
base for the second consecutive year. She hit .368 and drove in 24 runs, and was one of
the NECC's top fielders with just six errors in 251 chances (.976 avg.).
Shortstop Nancy Nicsevic (Columbia) and third base Erin Craig were also on the All-
NECC second team. Nicsevic, from her lead-off spot in the order, scored 34 runs, had 13
extra-base hits, and batted .355. Craig led the Albany regulars with a .370 batting
average and had eight doubles.
Cannata, the former head coach at Voorheesville High School, guided the Great
Danes to a school-record 32-9 record and the program's first-ever NECC championship.
She is in her fourth season, and is 91-48 overall. Albany makes its second straight
_ appearance in the ECAC Division II Mid-Atlantic Tournament this weekend in Flushing,
New York.

STEVE CHECKSFIELD CHOSEN NECC BASEBALL ROOKIE OF THE YEAR
Three Great Danes Earn All-Conference Honors
Rindge, N.H. -- Albany's Steve Checksfield has been picked as the 1998 New England
Collegiate Conference Rookie of the Year in baseball in voting by the conference's head
coaches.
Checksfield, a freshman outfielder, was also chosen first-team all-conference, while
teammates Michael Oliva and Jason Trufant were members of the second team. They
are the first Albany baseball players in the program's history to receive All-NECC
recognition.
Checksfield, who was among the conference leaders in four offensive categories, led
the Great Danes in hitting (.405), runs (43), home runs (11) and RBIs (40). A three-time
NECC Rookie of the Week, he also had nine doubles, four triples, nine stolen bases, and
an .818 slugging percentage.
Oliva, a sophomore outfielder, batted .391 in the lead-off spot with 30 runs, 11 stolen
bases, and 17 extra-base hits. Trufant has been his team's top pitcher throughout the
season with a 7-1 record and a 3.00 earned run average. The sophomore right-hander
has four complete games, three shutouts, and leads the UA staff with 48 strikeouts.
Albany (19-13) makes its first appearance in an ECAC tournament since 1994, when
the Great Danes meet Dowling in an opening-round game on Friday morning.

(Softball Earns ECAC Tournament Berth)
Centerville, Mass. -- The University at Albany softball team will make its second straight
appearance in the ECAC Division II Mid-Atlantic tournament this weekend as announced
today by the conference office. The Great Danes, seeded third, meet Queens, the No. 2
seed, in the opening round on Saturday at 40:00-a-m. in Flushing, New York. Dowling,
the top seed, faces Adelphi in the other first-round match-up. The four-team, double-
elimination championship concludes on Sunday.
Albany (32-9), the 1998 New England Collegiate Conference champion, set a school
single-season record for victories, and ended its regular schedule with a 14-game
winning streak. Kelly Poynton, a junior pitcher, has been the key to her team's succes
with a 17-3 record and a 1.06 earned run average.
Several local high school products are in the Albany starting lineup. First base Amy
McGroty (Schalmont) is hitting .368 with 24 RBIs, while shortstop Nancy Nicsevic
(Columbia) has a .355 batting average with 34 runs and 13 extra-base hits. Second base
Kate Carnevale (Columbia) has a team-high 15 stolen bases with a .267 batting average.
Freshman right fielder Anne Bink (Colonie Central) is batting .257 in 38 games played.
(NECC Weekly Awards)
Rindge, N.H. -- University at Albany's Steve Checksfield, a freshman outfielder, has been

Centerville, Mass. -- The University at Albany baseball team will make its first ECAC
tournament appearance since 1994, and the women's lacrosse team has earned a berth
in the ECAC championship for the second time in the last three years as announced
today by the conference office. The ECAC softball and men's lacrosse tournament fields
will be chosen on Tuesday.
Albany (19-13) is the third seed in the ECAC Division II baseball tournament, and faces
Dowling (24-11) in the first round on Friday at 10:00 a.m. Stony Brook (22-10-1), the host
school for this double-elimination event, meets Southern Connecticut State (15-13) in the
opening round.
Freshman right fielder Steve Checksfield leads the Great Danes with a .405 batting
average, and has 11 home runs with 40 RBIs. Jason Trufant is the top pitcher with a 7-1
record and a 3.00 earned run average. Doug O'Brey, a Scotia-Glenville High graduate, is
in his fourth season as head coach.
In women's lacrosse, Albany (11-3) will travel to the top seed Gannon (12-2) on
Saturday, May 9. Game time in Erie, Pennsylvania is 1:00 p.m. The Great Danes are
making their second ECAC championship appearance in the last three years, and
suffered a 14-12 setback at Sacred Heart in 1996.
Gannon and Albany are ranked second and third in the latest Brine/IWLCA Division II
national poll. The Great Danes are led by senior midfielder Rafaela Nikas (50 goals, 10
assists) and first-team All-American Dawn DiMicco (38 goals, 16 assists). Head coach
Marylou Vosburgh, a native of Averill Park, N.Y., is in her third season with a 27-11
record.

Princeton, N.J. -- Harold Valestin won the men's triple jump, and Ellakisha Williamson
(Albany H.S.) and Janna Johnston (Shenendehowa) each posted a pair of top-three
finishes at the Princeton Invitational on Saturday at William Weaver Track Stadium.
Valestin leaped 46-feet, 11.50-inches to finish ahead of teammate Ronald Edmundson
(46-2.75) for the triple jump title. Williamson sprinted 24.34 seconds for a second-place
showing in the women's 200-meter dash, and was third in the 100-hurdles (13.97). Nicole
Green (Nike Central) was first in the 200 in 23.74.
Johnston, who was fifth in the Penn Relays heptathlon last week, went a season-best
18-0.25 to take third in the long jump, and was also claimed third in the high jump (5-
4.50).
Luis Soto was in the top five in two events, as he took second in the long jump (23-4)
and fourth in the high jump (6-7). Freshman Mike Kiernan finished fourth in the 5,000
with a time 15:26.05.
Other Albany athletes from local high schools fared well in the competition. Jayson
Vazquez (Amsterdam) was first in his 110-hurdles heat, and was clocked in 14.64. Jen
Dott (Colonie Central) went 4:53.92 in the 1,500 to capture second in her heat. Greg
Miller (Albany) was third in his 100 heat (11.15) and Ben Wright (Averill Park) turned in his
best effort this spring with a time of 3:53.32 in the 1,500 for a fourth-place finish.
(Men's Lacrosse)
West Chester, Pa. -- Senior attackman Matt Domenick had five goals and one assist as
West Chester held off Albany, 16-14, in the season finale for both teams on Saturday at
John A. Farrell Stadium.

afternoon.
