ALBANY MEN'S SOCCER EARNS FIRST NCAA BID SINCE 1978
ALBANY, N.Y. -- The University at Albany men's soccer team earned its first
NCAA Tournament bid since 1978 when it was selected to the 32-team field on Sunday
evening as the third seed in the Northeast Region.
Albany will play second-seed Plattsburgh State in the first round of the NCAA
Division II| Men's Soccer Championship this Saturday, November 5, in Rochester, N.Y.
Rochester Institute of Technology, the top seed, meets Binghamton University, the
fourth seed.
The Great Danes beat Plattsburgh earlier this season, 2-1, at Varsity Field, and
last week upset Binghamton, 3-1 in overtime.
The NCAA berth is Albany's first since 1978, when they lost to Cortland State,
2-1, in the first round. Albany's last post-season appearance came in 1992, when UA
won the ECAC Upstate New York Championship.
The Danes (10-4-2) are unbeaten in their last four games, and have reached
the 10-win plateau for the fifth time in school history. Junior forward Chris Mogavero
(15-3-33) leads the his team in goals and points, and has scored in five straight games.
Junior goalkeeper Jon Jacobs has made 92 saves, and owns a 1.11 goals against
average.

ALBANY, N.Y. -- Senior Chris Mogavero scored his 15th goal of the season in
the first half, and Albany defeated Cortland State, 3-0, in men's soccer on Saturday
afternoon at Varsity Field.
Mogavero dribbled to his right and booted a shot into the left corner of the net to
put Albany ahead, 3-0, with 11 minuets, and 48 seconds left in the first half. Tai Nnham
put the Great Danes on the board first, wnen he one-timed Jomo Forrester's crossing
pass into the right top corner at 16:48. Ryan Kochanowicz tallied UA's second goal by
dribbling from deep in his own half, and blasting a 20-footer past Cortland goalkeeper
Terry Moss at 22:33.
Jon Jacobs made 10 saves for the Great Danes, while Moss stopped three
shots in the Red Dragon net.
Albany, unbeaten in its last four games, ended its regular season with a 10-4-2
record. The Great Danes could make their first NCAA Tournament appearance since
1979 when the 32-team bracket is announced on Sunday evening at 10:00 p.m. (EST).

ALBANY, N.Y. -- Chris Mogavero scored the go-ahead goal in overtime,
and Albany ended Binghamton's 11-game winning streak with a 3-1upset victory
in men's soccer on Wednesday afternoon at Varsity Field.
Mogavero dribbled to his right, and fired a shot from 24 yards away past
BU goalkeeper Brian Stroh to give Albany a 2-1 lead, 4 minutes and 22
seconds gone into overtime. Jomo Forrester added an insurance goal, his
second of the game, on a breakaway at 107:20.
Binghamton's Josh Rosenblum knocked in the rebound of Dave
Pabon's direct kick to put his team ahead ahead, 1-0, at 64:36. Forrester
answered with a 10-yard shot at 78:45, on a feed from Mogavero.
Jon Jacobs turned aside six shots for the Great Danes, while Stroh made
five saves for Binghamton, 12-5-0.
Albany (9-4-2), which avenged last year's 5-2 overtime loss at
Binghamton, improved its chances for a post-season tournament berth. The
Great Danes, which play their regular-season finale against Cortland at home
this Saturday at 3:00 pm, were ranked sixth in the Northeast Region while
Binghamton was the No. 2 team in this week's poll.

ALBANY'S JOE SAVINO NAMED ECAC ROOKIE OF THE WEEK
Andy Shein and Fred Daughtry Selected on ECAC Honor Roll
Albany, N.Y. -- University at Albany quarterback Joe Savino was selected as the ECAC
Upstate New York Division II] Rookie of the Week for his performance in a 45-20 victory at
Norwich last Saturday.
Savino, who earned the award for the second time this season, passed for 214 yards on 11-
of-21 attempts, and tied a school record with four touchdown passes. The 5'9", 165-pound
freshman also rushed for 44 yards on 12 carries and scored on a one-yard run.
Savino, who has thrown for 200 or more yards in four games, set an Albany single-season
passing mark with 1,283 yards. Jaan Laap held the old record with 1,196 yards in 1992.
Shein makes his four appearance on the ECAC Honor Roll this fall, after grabbing six passes
for 139 yards and matching Ed Seller's record with three TD receptions. The senior flanker, who
has 34 receptions for 662 yards and seven TD's, has reached the 100-yard mark in receiving
yardage on four occasions.
Daughtry, a freshman safety, made his first collegiate start a memorable one. He tied an
Albany single-game record with three interceptions, and had six tackles (five solo).

ALBANY, N.Y. -- Senior Deb Antonelli scored the equalizer on a direct
kick late in the second half, and Albany tied Eastern Connecticut State in
women's soccer on Monday afternoon at Varsity Field.
Antonelli, playing the final home game of her career, hooked a floater into
the net over Warrior goalkeeper Nicole Chiavelli with six minutes, and 17
seconds left in the second half. Christa Grzywinski scored ECSU's lone goal
from directly in front at 66:51.
Albany, 5-1-2 at home this season, got 10 saves from freshman Michelle
Lanoue, while Chiavelli made seven saves for ECSU (9-6-3).
Albany (5-8-2) plays its season finale at St. Rose this Thursday, October
2/ at 3:00.

GENEVA, N.Y. -- Junior Chris Mogavero scored Albany's first goal, and three different players
scored in the second half, as the Great Danes defeated Hobart, 4-0, on Saturday afternoon in Geneva,
N.Y.
Mogavero scored his 13th goal of the season, five minutes, 16 seconds into the game, to give Albany
a 1-0 lead. Sophomore Jomo Forrester, freshman Kevin Koscieniak, and senior Geroge Philippou
each scored in the second half for the Danes (8-4-2).
Junior Jon Jacobs earned his third shutout of the season, by stopping five shots in the Albany net,
while Julian Reed made four saves for Hobart, 3-11.
Albany, ranked seventh in the Northeast Region, hosts Binghamton this Wednesday, October 26, at
3:00.

ALBANY, NLY. -- Midfielders Chapel Love and Pippa Bond each scored in the
first half, to lead Vassar past Albany, 2-1, in women's field hockey on Saturday
afternoon at Varsity Field.
Love scored on a penalty stroke with 13 minutes, 10 seconds left in the first
half, and Bond extended Vassar's lead to 2-6 with a liner frorn the right wing at the
11:36 mark of the first haif.
@ Albany's Danieiie Neroni closed the deficit to 2-1, when she scored off
Christina Yang's assist,11 minutes into the second half.
Sophomore Jit Lusardi stopped 14 shots for the Great Danes, while llyse
Wiiske made two saves in the Vassar net.

ALBANY'S AMY PREECE SCORES TWICE IN VICTORY OVER RUSSELL SAGE
ALBANY, N.Y. -- Junior Amy Preece, a Shirley, N.Y. native, scored twice in the
second half, to lead Albany past Russell Sage, 3-0, in women's soccer on Thursday,
October 20, at Varsity Field.
Preece hooked a liner inside the left post for her first goal at 67:42, then
knocked in teammate Jenn O'Donnell's rebound with 5:20 remaining in the game.
Preece, a midfielder, currently leads Albany in goals (5), and total points (11).
The three goals marked a season-high for Albany, 5-7-1, and helped the Great
_ Danes equal last year's win total with three games remaining.
A 1992 graduate of William Floyd High School, Preece was a three-year
letterwinner at William Floyd, and an all-league selection her sophomore and junior
seasons.
Albany plays at Plattsburgh this Saturday, October 22, at 1:00.

28th ANNUAL ALBANY CROSS COUNTRY INVITATIONAL
SLATED FOR SATURDAY
Albany, N.Y. -- The University at Albany will host the 28th Annual Albany Men's
and Women's Cross Country Invitational this Saturday, October 22: Sixty
schools are scheduled to compete in four races for varsity, junior college, and
junior varsity teams.
C.W. Post's Martin Ryan, who finished second in last year's R.K. Munsey
men’s varsity race with a time of 24:51.77 over the 8,000-meter course,
highlights the field. Jeff Lyndaker, of St. Lawrence, also returns, after finishing
fifth in 25:13.8 a year ago. Dartmouth ranked 10th in the latest NCAA Division |
poll is the top men's team.
Michelle Fobert, from Salve Regina University in Rhode Island, will
attempt to defend her women's title, after running 5,000 meters in 18:28.34 in
last year's varsity competition. The Albany team, which was fourth at the
Codfish Bowl Invitational in September, is led by sophomore Lisa Nesta and
Tonya Dodge, of Granville Central High School.
Alfred State, the nation's third-ranked junior college men's team, features
Craig Walion, a senior from nearby Watervliet High School.

ALBANY'S JEREMY KACHEJIAN NAMED ECAC PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Albany, N.Y. -- University at Albany fullback Jeremy Kachejian was selected as the ECAC
Upstate New York Division III Player of the Week for his performance in a 30-29 loss to Cortland
State last Saturday.
Kachejian, who does not start, and is the first Albany player to receive this award in 1994,
rushed for a career-high 159 yards on 26 carries, and twice in the fourth quarter put the Great
Danes ahead on touchdown runs of five and seven yards.
The 5'7", 175-pound junior posted the 11th best single-game rushing total in school history,
and is just the second UA runner to gain 150 or more yards in a game since 1988. Kachejian, of
Oakland, N.J., had carried the football 54 times for 266 career yards coming into the Cortland
contest.

LUSARDI MAKES 39 SAVES IN LOSS TO TOP-RANKED CORTLAND
CORTLAND, N.Y. -- Sophmore Jill Lusardi, a St. James, N.Y. native,
made a career-high 39 saves for Albany in a 5-1 loss to Cortland in women's
field hockey on Sunday October, 16, in Cortland, N.Y. Cortland (15-0) is the top-
ranked team in NCAA Division Ill, and the defending national champion.
Lusardi has played every minute in goal this season for Albany, in its first
year as a varsity sport. She has made 97 saves, has a ./89 save percentage,
and holds a 4.14 goals against average.
A 1993 graduate of Smithtown High School, Lusardi played three seasons
of varsity field hockey for the Bulls, and was a senior-year captain.
Albany, 1-5, hosts Vassar this Saturday, October 22, at 12:00.

Cortland, N.Y. -- Carol Merchant had one goal and two assists to lead unbeaten Cortland State, the
top-ranked Division II] team in the nation, to a 5-1 victory over Albany on Sunday afternoon.
Merchant gave her team a 1-0 lead just 14 minutes into the contest, before Albany's Christina Yang, a
sophomore attacker from Latham, N.Y. (Shaker H.S.) found the cage on a scramble in front.
Cortland (15-0), which has a 22-game winning streak, and has not lost at home since 1990,
responded with three unanswered goals. Ilena Key's penalty stroke broke the tie 20 seconds later.
Goalkeeper Jill Lusardi has a career-high 39 saves for Albany, which falls to 1-5 on the season.

John Plezia's unassisted goal at 44 minutes, three seconds, gave Rochester a 2-1 lead that stood until
Koscielniak scored for Albany at 80:45. Goalkeeper Jon Jacobs made 13 saves for Albany, while Rochester,
which out-shot Albany 33-18, got 16 saves from Chris Farley.

ALBANY'S LEE SCORES GAME-WINNING GOAL VERSUS ONEONTA STATE
ALBANY, N.Y. -- Senior Stephanie Lee, a Yorktown-Heights native, came
off the bench to score in first half, and Albany broke a four-game losing streak by
beating Oneonta State, 1-0, in women's soccer on Thursday, October 13, at
Varsity Field.
Lee's first goal of the season came on a rebound of a shot by teammate
Amy Preece that caromed off Oneonta State goalkeeper Lindsey Sandle's
hands.
Lee graduated from Yorktown High School in 1991, where she was a
three-year all-league performer, and served as captain her senior season.
The Great Danes (4-6-1) play at Binghamton this Saturday, October 15,
at 1:00.

MARK WIMMER NAMED MEN'S LACROSSE HEAD COACH
AT THE UNIVERSITY AT ALBANY
ALBANY, N.Y. -- Mark Wimmer, an assistant lacrosse coach for the last seven years at the
University at Albany, has been elevated to head men's lacrosse coach, as Director of Athletics Dr. Milton
E. Richards announced today.
Wimmer, who becomes the ninth head coach in the Albany program's 24-year history, takes over for
former coach Steve O'Shea, who left the position to enter private business. During the last seven
seasons, the Great Danes have compiled a 45-37 overall record, earned two ECAC Tournament
appearances and posted five winning campaigns.
"Mark's knowledge of the program and our players will make for a smooth transition," Richards said.
@ "His coaching and playing experiences will lend itself well as we move to NCAA Division II classificaton."
Wimmer, who was responsible for coordinating Albany's defense as an assistant, played long stick
and close defense at Brockport State in the late 1970's. Last summer, he served as director of the
Hudson Valley Community College Lacrosse Camp, and has been an assistant director at Camp
Cobosee in Maine. He continues to play in the Lake Placid Summit and Mohawk Summer Club lacrosse
leagues.
Originally from Columbus, Indiana, Wimmer, 39, attended Whitesboro (N.Y.) High School near
Utica, where he was a member of the baseball team. He received his B.S. in business administration
from Brockport in 1980, and earned a master's degree in history from the University at Albany in 1993.
For the last 10 years, he has worked as a freelance photographer in the Capital District.

TROY, N.Y. -- Freshman Josh Lilburn scored the game-winning goal on
a 15-yard shot late in the game, to lead Rensselaer past Albany, 3-2, in men's
soccer on Wednesday afternoon at Ned Harkness Field.
Lilburn lofted a shot from the right wing past goalkeeper Jon Jacobs, and
into the left corner of the goal at 77 minutes, 19 seconds, to end a comeback bid
by Albany (7-4-1), which was ranked second in this week's Northeast Region
poll.
With the Rensselaer (7-2-2) ahead 2-0, Albany's Kiernan Griffen one-
timed a Kevin Koscielniack throw-in into the net, early in the second half.
Chris Mogavero got the equalizer, when he scored off his own rebound from 10
yards away at /6:29.
6 Rensselaer goalkeeper Doug Parra made 11 saves, while Jacobs
stopped two shots in the Great Dane net.
Albany plays at Rochester, ranked sixth in the Northeast Region, this
Saturday, October 15, at 3:30.

ALBANY, N.Y. -- Senior Eric Neubart scored a breakaway goal in the
second half, to lead Montclair State past Albany, 1-0, on Saturday afternoon at
Varsity Field.
Neubart beat Kiernan Griffen inside the six-yard line, then booted a shot
between the left post and goalkeeper Jon Jacobs at 73 minutes, 14 seconds.
Montclair State won its sixth in a row, by dealing Albany its first home loss
of the season. Red Hawk goalkeeper Mike Rodgers stopped five shots for his
second shutout, while Jacobs made four saves in the Great Dane net.
Albany, ranked sixth in the Northeast Region, plays at Rensselaer this
Wednesday, October 12, at 2:00 p.m.

ALBANY, N.Y. -- Forwards Jason Keshinover and Chris Mogavero each scored second-half goals,
and Albany defeated Plattsburgh, 2-1, in men's soccer on Tuesday afternoon at Varsity Field.
Keshinover, a freshman, headed an indirect kick from George Philippou inside the right goal post to
give Albany a 1-0 lead at 66 minutes, 18 seconds. Mogavero scored his tenth goal of the season, by
heading a Joe Augienello crossing pass into the left corner of the net with 11 minutes left in the game.
Less than one minute later, Plattsburghs Bryan Johnson closed the deficit to 2-1, when he converted
Andrew Gatherers feed from six yards away.
Great Dane goalkeeper Jon Jacobs recorded five saves, while Eric Rienecher turned aside two
shots in the Cardinal net.
Plattsburgh, ranked third in the Northeast Region, had its five-game win streak snapped, and Albany,
ranked sixth, stayed unbeaten at home.
Albany, 7-2-1, hosts Montclair State this Saturday, October 8, at 1:00.

NORTH ADAMS STATE 3, ALBANY 1
ALBANY, N.Y. -- Freshman forward Tracey Toce scored the go-ahead goal late in the game, and
North Adams State handed Albany its first home loss of the season, 3-1, on Monday afternoon at Varsity
Field.
With the game tied at 1-1, Toce booted a Maura Sullivan pass into the goal from point-blank range
with four minutes, 46 seconds left. Less than a minute later, Jen Maloney netted her second goal of the
game from six yards away after Albany goalkeeper Michelle Lanoue misplayed a clear.
Maloney's first goal came 1:17 into the game, when she found the right corner of the goal from 30
yards away. Albany's Tara Ford scored the equalizer with 1:30 left in the first half with a high-arcing shot
just over Mohawk goalkeeper Kate Kelly.
North Adams, which outshot Albany 14-1 in the second half, needed just three saves from Kelly.
Lanoue collected 10 saves for the Great Danes, which lost their third in a row.
Albany (3-5-1) plays at Hartwick College this Saturday, October 10, at 3:30.

ALBANY, N.Y. -- Freshman midfielder Joe Augienello scored on a penalty kick
late in the second half and Albany defeated Stony Brook, 2-0, in men's soccer on
Saturday afternoon at Varsity Field.
The penalty kick was set up when Stony Brook forward Ryan Jinks fouled
Albany's Jomo Forester on a clear breakaway. Augienello then booted the ball into
the left corner of the net at 81 minutes, 17 seconds. Albany added an insurance goal
when Chris Mogavero sent a Jason Auffarth feed past goalkeeper Corey DeRosa at
87:15.
Junior goalkeeper Jon Jacobs recorded his second straight shutout, by
stopping eight shots in the Dane net. DeRosa had:seven saves for Stony Brook (6-3-
0).
Albany (6-2-1) is currently ranked eighth in the ISAA Northeast Region Division
Ill poll. The Danes host Plattsburgh, number five in the ISAA poll, this Tuesday,
October 4, at 3:30.
