Albany 44, Canisius 14

Albany, N.Y. — Junior tailback Gary Jones rushed for 101 yards and two touchdowns, all in the
first half, as Albany rolled to a 44-14 non-conference victory over Canisius on Saturday
afternoon before a homecoming crowd of 3,919 at University Field.

Albany (4-3) reached the end zone on its opening five possessions en route to a 37-0
lead with just under six minutes left in the first half. Senior quarterback Ryan Roeder, who
completed 9 of 12 passes for 119 yards, fired a 10-yard touchdown pass to Matt Crudo to open
the scoring with 9:55 remaining in the first quarter.

The Great Danes, who piled up 547 total yards, including a season-best 392 on the
ground, manufactured two long touchdown drives to build a 21-0 advantage early in the second
period. Jones completed an eight-play march with a 4-yard run over right tackle, before Roeder
raced around right end on an 8-yard option run.

Jones, who toppled the 100-yard mark for the fourth time this season despite not playing
in the second half, scored from five yards out on a sprint-draw play with 9:15 left in the second
stanza. The rushing touchdown was his second of the game and 13th of the season.

Albany increased its lead to 30-0, when Canisius quarterback Dennis Wellman delivered
a bad pitch near his goal line on an option play, and the ball rolled out of the end zone for a
safety. Roeder ended the run of 37 consecutive points, when he threw a 15-yard scoring pass
to split end Nicholas Bazan.

“It was nice to have that winning feeling again,” said Roeder, whose team lost in double
overtime at Drake the previous Saturday. “We didn’t have any mental mistakes and we were on
all cylinders. Our offensive line did a great job, and that’s where it all starts. We know we can
do better than what we have done to this point in the season.”

Canisius (2-5) put a pair of touchdowns on the scoreboard in the third quarter. Wellman,
a freshman who connected on 11-of-24 through the air for 145 yards, hit wideout Bryan
Butterworth with an 11-yard TD strike. He later fired a 67-yard scoring pass to James
Bialasik. In between, Albany reserve quarterback Anthony Sciarra scored on a 3-yard run.

The Great Danes, who had their best day on the ground since moving up to the Division
I-AA level in 1999, had two other runners with 90 or more yards. Eddie Unverzagt, a redshirt
freshman fullback, rumbled seven times for 95, while tailback Miciah Yehudah had 13 carries
for 91.

Albany 35, Wagner 14

Albany, N.Y. — Junior tailback Gary Jones rushed for three touchdowns and Matt Crudo
accounted for two scores to lead Albany to a 35-14 Northeast Conference victory over Wagner
on Saturday afternoon at University Field.

Albany (3-2, NEC 3-1) led 21-14 midway through the fourth quarter, but put the game
away with a pair of short touchdown drives. Jones, who ran for 98 yards on 27 carries, scored
on a 5-yard run over right tackle with 6:20 remaining. Crudo, a sophomore flanker, reached the
end zone four minutes later on a 20-yard reverse.

In the first quarter, the Great Danes took a 7-0 lead, when quarterback Ryan Roeder
scrambled from the pocket and fired a 33-yard touchdown pass to Crudo. Wagner (3-2, NEC 1-
1) used an 80-yard scoring march to draw even with 4:54 left in the period. Chris Davis, who
rushed for 53 yards on 16 attempts, reached paydirt on a 1-yard run over the left side.

Albany had excellent field position in the opening quarter due to 20-mile-per-hour winds
and took possession on its next drive at the Wagner 42. Jones capped off the march when he
broke three tackles on a 9-yard scoring run that gave his team the lead for good at 14-7.

The Great Danes, who rushed for 167 of their 250 net yards in the second half, went up
21-7 with 9:30 left in the third quarter. Jones completed a six-play drive with a 4-yard
touchdown run. Fullback Jon George, who carried 12 times for 89 yards, keyed that sequence
with a twisting 27-yard run into Wagner territory.

The Seahawks took advantage of an Albany special teams miscue. Stan Zylinski’s 26-
yard quick kick, on a third-and-16 play, was returned by Truesun Thomas to the Great Danes’
28. Davis later bounced around right end to score on a 1-yard run and his team was within a
touchdown with 5:07 remaining in the third stanza.

“The wind was a major factor,” said Albany coach Bob Ford, who recorded his 180th
career victory at the school. “We were able to use a short field in the first and fourth quarter,
and our offense began to control the ball as game went along. The team responded well
coming off last week’s tough loss.”

Roeder completed 12 of 19 passes for 107 yards and one touchdown for the Great
Danes, who moved into a tie for first place with Sacred Heart in the conference standings.
Crudo finished with three receptions for 44 yards. Wagner’s David Bateman and Chris Spina,
who alternated at quarterback, combined on 12-of-29 passing for 152 yards. The Seahawks
managed just 204 total yards, including 52 on the ground.

“We were not very good,” said Wagner coach Walt Hameline. “We had too many

penalties and dropped balls. They did what they had to do, but | have questions about our
mental toughness out there today.”
