Albany 86, Colgate 70
Hamilton, N.Y. — Todd Cetnar scored 21 points, and Will Brand added a season-high
20 to lead Albany to an 86-70 non-conference victory over Colgate on Tuesday evening
at Cotterell Court. The Great Danes finished their inaugural NCAA Division | campaign
with an 11-17 record.
Colgate (12-15) scored seven straight points to grab an early 17-13 lead, but
Albany regrouped with 11 straight markers to take the lead for good. Matthew
Haggarty, who scored 12 points, buried two three-point shots in that stretch. Freshman
Steve Albany had a career-high 16 points, all in the first half, and helped stake his club
to a 43-32 halftime advantage.
The Red Raiders, closed within 54-45 with 11:54 remaining on a pair of free
throws by Pat Campolieta, who scored 11. The Great Danes, who shot 55-percent from
the floor, including 12-of-23 form three-point range, pushed the lead back to double
digits on back-to-back baskets by Brand and Dave Schloss.
“We played exceptional,” said Albany coach Scott Hicks, who saw an Albany
program reach the 11-win mark for the 45" consecutive season. “Steve Albany gave us
a big lift, and we shot the lights out in the first half. This team has a lot to be proud of.
We played a lot of games on the road, and the kids stuck together throughout the
season.”
Pat Diamond led Colgate with 18 points, while Jordan Harris had 11 points and
nine rebounds. Joe Vukovic had 10 points and 10 rebounds for the Great Danes, who
avenged a /9-69 loss to Colgate back on Nov. 20.

Albany 56, Navy 50
Albany, N.Y. - Megan Buchanan scored 18 points, and Liz Tucker added 12
points and 12 rebounds to lead Albany past Navy, 56-50, in the Great Danes’
season finale on Monday evening at the Recreation and Convocation Center.
Albany has won seven of its last eight contests to finish 12-15 in the
program's inaugural NCAA Division | campaign.
Tucker sank two free throws to hand the Great Danes a 41-31 lead early in
the second half. Navy (5-22) regrouped with 10 of the game’s next 11 points.
Hilary Goodrich, who led all scorers with 21, buried a three-pointer and hit a
driving layup to close the gap to 42-41.
Albany still led 48-46 with 2:07 remaining, wnen Buchanan scored in the
lane on an in-bounds play. Tucker sealed the verdict with 38 seconds left by
converting a driving bank shot from left of the lane for a 54-49 advantage.
“This team has matured over the last month,” Albany coach Mari Warner
said. “They discovered what their capabilities are, and | am quite proud of winning
12 games in our first Division | year. We had a great group of seniors.”
The Midshipmen, who have won just once on the road this season, jumped
out to early six-point lead. Albany used a 12-3 run to go in front for good en route
to a 34-28 halftime cushion. Buchanan, a 5-foot-11 senior making her final home
appearance, netted 16 first-half points, including 4-of-6 from three-point range.

of the season for a team rules violation.
FRESHMAN GUARD SAM HOPES SUSPENDED FOR SEASON FINALE
Albany, N.Y. — University at Albany's Sam Hopes has been suspended for the
basketball team’s final game of the season due to a team rules violation, as head
coach Scott Hicks announced today. The Great Danes conclude their inaugural
NCAA Division | campaign at Colgate on Tuesday, Feb. 29.
Hopes, a freshman guard from Detroit, Mich., has appeared in all 27
contests as a reserve. He is averaging 5.2 points, 1.6 rebounds and 1.0 assists
per game.
Albany is competing as a Division | independent, and owns a 10-17 overall
record.

VERMONT TOPS ALBANY IN WOMEN’S TENNIS
©} Albany, N.Y. — Milana Simik posted victories at second singles and doubles
leading Vermont to a 6-2 victory over Albany on Saturday at the University’s
Bubble on campus.
Simik defeated Violeta Petijevic, 6-3, 3-6, 7-5, in second singles and teamed
with Joanna Kahn to upend Erinn Langford and Ilissa Strolovitz, 9-8(7-3), in
second doubles action. Samantha Kramer earned a two tiebreaker first singles
victory over Kahn, 7-6(4), 7-6(5), while Strolovitz edged Lisa Caffrey, 6-4, 6-3.
Vermont captured both doubles points. Albany dropped to 8-6 this year.

HAGGARTY NAMED TO GTE DISTRICT I BASKETBALL ACADEMIC TEAM
Kalamazoo, Mich. — University at Albany’s Matthew Haggarty has been selected to the GTE
District | Academic All-America Men's Basketball Team as chosen by the College Sports
Information Directors of America (COSIDA). Haggarty, who has a 3.37 cumulative grade point
average in communication with a double minor in Spanish and marketing, was one of five
players named to the all-district unit. The national team will be announced on March 14.
Haggarty, a senior guard from Wayland, Mass. (Catholic Memorial H.S.), is averaging
13.7 points, 3.1 rebounds and 2.9 assists as a 27-game starter this season. He ranks eighth
nationally among the NCAA Division | leaders in three-point field goals made (3.3 per game),
and is shooting 42.7 percent from beyond the arc.
Haggarty became the 23 1,000-point scorer in school history this season, and currently
is 17 on the all-time chart with 1,084. He shattered Albany's career record for 3-pointers made
(252) earlier this month, and set the single-season standard (90) on Wednesday against
Bucknell.
Along with Haggarty, members of the District | team include Darren Fenn (Canisius),
Marcus Blossom (Northeastern), Ted Smith (Yale) and Alexei Vasiliev (Buffalo).
ALBANY BLANKS NIAGARA IN WOMEN’S TENNIS
Albany, N.Y. -- Samantha Kramer and Violeta Petijevic posted straight-set victories at first and
second singles, respectively, leading Albany to an 8-0 victory over Niagara on Thursday at the
University s Bubble on campus.

Colleen Cary. The duo teamed for an 8-6 first-doubles victory over the team of Willick and

Lewisburg, Pa. - Dan Bowen scored 18 points to pace five players in double figures, as
Bucknell posted its fifth straight win with a 72-61 non-conference victory over Albany on

Bucknell (17-9) led 46-44 midway through the second half, but than reeled off nine
unanswered points to take control. Shaun Asbury, who did all of his scoring in the final
period, netted five of his 10 points in that stretch. Brian Muckle, who had 12 points,
finished off that spurt with a transition basket. Albany (10-17) could get no closer than
five points the rest of the way.
“You have to play perfect in order to beat a well coached team with good seniors,”
Albany coach Scott Hicks said. “We took ourselves out of it with poor transition defense
and our inability to do the little things that get you over the tough moments in a game.”
The Great Danes, who dropped their fourth straight, led 16-15 in the first half, but
the Bison took the lead for good with an 8-2 run. Bucknell, who shot 58-percent from the
field in the contest, went on to grab a 29-23 halftime advantage. Albany rallied to within
41-40 with 14:01 remaining.
Todd Cetnar led the Great Danes with 18 points, while Steve Albany added a
career-high 15. Matthew Haggarty scored 12 points, and set a single-season record for
three-point field goals made (90). Sophomore guard Bryan Bailey finished with 16

Lewisburg, Pa. - Megan Buchanan scored 15 points and became the school’s all-time
three-point leader lifting Albany to a 64-63 victory over Bucknell on Wednesday evening
at Davis Gymnasium. The Great Danes, who have won six of their last seven games,
avenged an early-season 24-point loss to the Bisons.
‘It's tremendous to avenge an early season loss,” said Albany coach Mari Warner,
whose team has posted three straight road wins against Patriot League schools. “We’ve
been playing great down the stretch and have had a good presence on the boards.”
Albany (11-15), who outrebounded the Bisons 35 to 28, took a 62-54 lead on a
Melissa Schoonover jumper with 6:32 remaining, but only scored one field goal the rest
of the period. Bucknell (13-13) scored nine of the game’s final 11 points. The Bisons
had a chance to win the contest on a Vicki Quimby turnaround jumper in the paint with
four seconds left, but the shot missed and Schoonover grabbed the rebound.
Quimby scored 18 of her game-high 19 points in the second half. Bucknell held
just two second-half leads, including a 35-34 advantage that was the result of a 9-3 run
after the intermission.
In the first stanza, Albany trailed 22-19, but used a 12-1 spurt to take a 31-23 lead
late in the first half, which had six ties.
Liz Tucker and Dawn DiMicco both totaled nine points for Albany, who shot 48-
percent from the field. Lori Houck scored 16 for Bucknell, who was limited to 22-
percent three-point shooting.

GREVER SELECTED FOOTBALL GAZETTE LINEBACKER OF THE YEAR
Brookfield, Ill. -- Senior linebacker Mike Grever has been selected as the 1999
Football Gazette Division |-AA Non-Scholarship Linebacker of the Year, as
announced today by the national publication. Grever, the Northeast Conference
Defensive Player of the Year, was a first-team All-America selection.
Grever led the Great Danes with 88 tackles, including seven for losses and
1.5 sacks, and added three interceptions, five pass break-ups and two blocked
kicks. A 5-foot-11, 215-pound defender, Grever spearheaded a defensive unit
that ranked 15th among the Division I-AA national leaders in scoring at 17.3 points
per game. He finished his career as Albany's all-time tackles leader with 351, and
had 24 career games with double-figure tackles.
seven Albany players received honorable mention All-America honors,
including tailback Greg Garrett, the school's career rushing leader with 2,958
yards, and All-ECAC left guard Billy Van Jura. Others chosen were left
tackle J.T. Herfurth, right tackle Jason Barra, tight end Steve Checksfield, free
safety Samson Brown, and split end/return specialist Chris Phillis.
The Great Danes completed their first season as a NCAA Division I-AA
program with a 7-2 record.

Albany, N.Y. — Seth Barrett came off the bench to score 11 points, as Army
ended a nine-game losing streak with a 52-45 non-conference victory over Albany

Army (4-21) led 33-30 midway through the second half, but then broke the
contest open with six straight points. Barrett hit a baseline jumper, before Jerry
Crockett converted a driving layup for a 39-30 lead.
The Cadets, who avenged a 63-56 loss to Albany earlier this season,
increased its advantage to 49-39, but then had to survive a furious comeback
attempt. Matthew Haggarty, who had 13 points, missed a shot in the lane
following a steal that would have put Albany (10-16) within two points with 12
seconds remaining. Army’s Joe Quinn and Crockett combined to sink three foul
shots to keep their team’s lead safe.
Adam Glosier had nine points and 14 rebounds for the Cadets, who held
Albany to a season-low 24-percent shooting. Army out-rebounded the Great
Danes, 46-27, as Jonte' Harrell had four points and 14 caroms.
Albany's Todd Cetnar led all scorers with 21 points in his final home
appearance. The first half featured eight lead changes and two ties.

Albany (10-15) led 30-20 at halftime, but then began the final period with a
12-5 run to take control. Schoonover, who had eight rebounds and three blocks,
had two baskets in that stretch, before Megan Buchanan finished off that spurt
with a fastbreak layup for a 42-25 lead.
The Great Danes, who shot 51.4 percent from the field in the second half,
led by as much as 31 points in the final minutes. Buchanan finished with 10
points, while Tucker added seven assists, six rebounds and four steals to her
team-high scoring total.
“We were a little sluggish in warm ups,” said Schoonover, whose team lost
at No. 22 Mississippi State two days earlier. “The trip was exhausting with our
flight delayed until Monday, but we had to put that behind us. In the second half,
we did the things we had to do to win, and picked up our intensity on defense.”
Green Mountain (15-7) trailed 8-0 at the start, but closed to within 18-14
behind the play of Sarah Matuszak (Colonie Central H.S.), who had 16 points and
six rebounds. The Great Danes, who forced a season-high 33 turnovers,
responded with eight unanswered points to regain a double-digit lead.
Melissa Bathalon had 10 points and eight rebounds for Green Mountain, a
NAIA Division I] program. Albany out-rebounded the visitors, 47-30, and pulled
down 24 offensive boards.

Piscataway, N.J. - Dahntay Jones scored 18 points to pace four players in
double figures in leading Rutgers to a 79-60 non-conference victory over Albany
on Monday evening at Louis Brown Athletic Center.
Albany (10-15) trailed 8-0 at the start, but rallied to draw even at 21 apiece
on two free throws by Will Brand with 6:06 left in the period. Rutgers (14-10)
responded with nine consecutive points to take the lead for good. Jones, who had
14 first-half points, put his team ahead and Todd Billet hit a three-pointer during
that run.
The Scarlet Knights, who posted their second straight win, still led 45-32
early in the second half, but then tallied 13 of the game’s next 19 points. Rashod
Kent keyed that stretch, and finished with 15 points and 12 rebounds.
“| was satisfied with our effort, we competed hard,” Albany coach Scott
Hicks said. “We played well the first 14 minutes, but then went through a three-
minute lapse where we made bad decisions. We knew they had a size advantage
going into the game and the rebound margin proved that point.”
Matthew Haggarty tied a season-high with 23 points, including 7-of-12 from
three-point range. The 6-3 senior became the school’s career three-point leader
with 247 and replaced Darrin Jahnel on top of the list. Todd Cetnar and Brand
added 16 and 10 points respectively.
Rutgers’ Joel Salvi had 14 points while Billet scored 13 with seven assists.

Starkville, Miss. - Freshman forward LaToya Thomas scored 18 of her game-
high 27 points in the first half lifting No. 17 Mississippi State to an 84-34 victory
over Albany on Sunday afternoon at Humphrey Coliseum. The loss snapped
Albany's four-game winning streak.
Mississippi State (18-5) jumped out to a 24-6 lead, sparked by Thomas’ 14
points. Albany (9-15) only netted four field goals over the game’s first 11 minutes
and went scoreless for a six-and-a-half minute stretch late in the first half. The
Lady Bulldogs held a 44-16 advantage at halftime.
Mississippi State went on a 13-4 run to open the second half and took a 57-
20 lead with 13:19 left. The Lady Bulldogs shot 47-percent from the field during
the second stanza.
Thomas, who is ranked 11" nationally in scoring, made 8-of-13 field goals
and 10-of-13 free throws. She also added seven rebounds and five steals.
Jennifer Fambrough totaled 17 points and six rebounds.
Liz Tucker was Albany's leading scorer with 14 points. Melissa
Schoonover grabbed a season-high, 12 rebounds for Albany, who was
outrebounded by just a 47-42 margin. The Great Danes shot a season-low 22-
percent from the field and made only 2-of-17 three-point field goals. Albany’s 34
points were its lowest total since scoring just 32 in a loss to Saint Rose in 1980.

New York, N.Y. — Luis Soto and Ronald Edmundson won the long jump and triple jump,
respectively, and the Albany women set three school records at the Fordham/St. John’s
Invitational. The Great Danes were second in both the men’s and women’s team standings at
the Armory Track & Field Center.
Soto went 23-feet, 8.75-inches in the long jump, and narrowly missed Anthony
Davenport's school mark of 23-9. Robby Harrison (Shaker H.S.) was second in 23-2, and
qualified for the |C4A championships in March. Edmundson won the triple jump with a leap of
47-4.25. Jamie Rodriguez (Christian Brothers Academy) placed third in the 5,000-meter run
(14:51.88). John Morris was second in the high jump (6-5), and Rudy Volcy took third in the
99-hurdles (7.89).
Andrea Viger and Sarah Best, a pair of Granville Central graduates, were winners in the
5,000 and pole vault, respectively. Viger posted an ECAC-qualifying time of 17:35.24, and was
three seconds better than LaSalle’s Kathy Heable. Best, a freshman, established a school
standard with a mark of 8-6.
Two other Albany indoor records were smashed. Erica Viger, Andrea's twin sister, was
fifth at 1,000 meters in 3:02.07 to break a mark set by Tonya Dodge in 1994. Dinnah Decatus
eclipsed another record owned by Dodge, when she finished fourth in the 800 with a time of
2:16.88.
St. John’s edged Albany, 92 to 90, in the men’s competition, and also outdistanced the
Great Danes by nearly 44 points in the women’s meet.

78-30 victory over St. Joseph, Vt. on Friday evening at the Recreation and
Convocation Center.
Albany (9-14) rolled to a 17-2 lead in the opening seven minutes. Marie
Connors had five of her career-best 13 points in that run, and canned a three-
point field goal to end the outburst.
The Great Danes, who shot 53 percent in the first half, would later lead 29-
15, but then used a 9-0 run to push its margin over 20 points for the rest of the
night. Liz Tucker had five of her 10 points in that stretch.
Sophomore center Cara Caffell finished with a career-high 13 points and
added seven rebounds for the Great Danes, who travel to Mississippi State,
ranked 21° in the latest Associated Press national poll on Sunday.
“This was a confidence builder for several of us,” said O’Brien, who made 5-
of-9 from three-point range, and added five assists and six steals. “I had not been
shooting well, and tonight | got my rhythm back. Megan (Buchanan) has the flu,
so it was great to see Marie and Cara step it up.”
Buchanan, the team’s top scorer this season with a 16.3 average, played
just nine minutes, and scored three points. Most of the Albany regulars saw just
over 20 minutes of action.
St. Joseph, Vt., a NAIA Division II program, fell to 13-4 this season.

UNIVERSITY AT ALBANY NAMES JERRY FAIOLA
DIRECTOR OF ATHLETIC FACILITIES
ALBANY, N.Y. -- University at Albany Interim Director of Athletics Gail Cummings-Danson
announced today the hiring of Jerry Faiola as director of athletic facilities. Faigle will
supervise day-to-day operations and facility renovations and projects, and serve as event
manager for all home contests.
Faiola will also coordinate and schedule activities in the Recreation and Convocation
Center, a 5,000-seat all-purpose arena, the Physical Education Building with its gymnasium
and swimming areas, the school’s air-supported bubble, and an outdoor complex which
includes University Field, a football stadium with a 400-meter track, and 12 lighted} tennis
courts.
Faiola was previously assistant administrator of events and facilities at Princeton
University, where he supervised a 38-sport NCAA Division | program. He directed building
operations for Jadwin Gymnasium and Baker Rink, and was assistant coordinator of aquatics
at DeNunzio Pool. During his tenure, he was involved in directing NCAA championships in
men’s lacrosse and field hockey.
From 1996-98, Faiola was the director of club sports and assistant manager of the
Pride's Den at Springfield College. He marketed sports apparel to 39 athletic teams and five
club sports, and generated $110,000 in sales. In addition, Faiola was a recreation supervisor
for Springfield’s intramural sports program, and coordinated the NCAA Division II} men’s
basketball northeast regional and ECAC swimming & diving championships.
A native of Saratoga Springs, N.Y., Faiola received his B.S. in marketing and
management from Siena College, where he was a two-year starter as a pitcher/infielder on
the baseball team. He earned his master’s in education with an emphasis in| athletic
administration from Springfield in 1998.
Faiola, 32, played in the Albany Twilight Collegiate Baseball League, and won three
championships as a player/manager in the 1990s. He was an assistant coach for two years
with the Springfield College program, and has coached two state championship squads in the
Saratoga Springs Babe Ruth League.
Albany's 19-sport intercollegiate athletics program for men and women has upgraded
to the NCAA Division | level in 1999-2000.

Lafayette 90, Albany 70
Easton, Pa. — Brian Ehlers had 26 points and Tyson Whitfield added 22, as Lafayette
won its seventh straight with a 90-70 victory over Albany on Monday evening at Kirby
Sports Center.
Lafayette (15-5) led 48-44 with 14:19 remaining, but then scored nine straight
points to seize control. Ehlers, who had 16 first half points, scored two baskets in that
stretch. Albany (10-14) closed within 59-54 on a three-pointer by Matthew Haggarty,
who had 12 points.
The Leopards, who have lost just once at home this season, regrouped with an
11-2 run to put the game away. Brian Burke, who scored all 11 of his points from the
free throw line, sank seven foul shots in that span.
Stefan Ciosici had 14 points and 10 rebounds for the Leopards, who shot 52-
percent from the field, including 11-of-18 from three-point range.
“We played an excellent team, an NCAA caliber team,” Albany coach Scott Hicks
said. “They have good shooters, and hurt us with their offensive rebounding. We had
our chances early in the second half, but missed some free throws and wide open
looks.”
Todd Cetnar had 26 points to lead the Great Danes, who had their winning streak
halted at six straight.

lead Albany to a 60-57 come-from-behind victory over Lafayette on Monday evening at Allan P.

Albany (8-14) trailed by 16 points early in the second half, but used a 15-6 run to tie the
score at 54 on a Jess McGinlay fast break lay-up. The Great Danes outscored the Leopards,
28-12, over an 11-minute period. Albany took its first lead of the final stanza, 57-55, on a
Tucker lay-up. Lafayette’s Elizabeth Rojahn, who recorded a career-high, 25 points and 10
rebounds, hit two free throws to tie the score at 57 with 2:30 left. Melissa Schoonover made
one-of-two free throws to give Albany the lead for good with 20.8 seconds remaining.
Tucker, who recorded her eighth career double-double, added two free throws to up the
score to 60-57 with 10.3 seconds left. Rojahn’s three-point attempt in the final second was
blocked Megan Buchanan, who finished with 11 points and canned two three-point field goals
to tie Michele Davis’ school-record of 117 career three-pointers. The Great Danes shot 44
percent in the second half, while holding their opponent to 28 percent.

“| have to give all the credit to the players,” said head coach Mari Warner. “They fought
hard to get back into the game. We had some good possessions down the stretch that decided
the game.”
In the first half, Albany jumped out to an 18-10 lead, but Lafayette responded with a 24-4
run midway through the opening period. Rojahn scored eight of her points during that |stretch.
The Leopards led 34-22 at halftime.
Dawn DiMicco was Albany's third double figure scorer with 10 points, while Jennifer
Bayer recorded 10 for Lafayette (4-17).

Albany (10-13) led 40-37 midway through the second half, but then tallied nine
of the game's next 11 points. Will Brand (8 points, 7 rebounds) scored two baskets in
that stretch, and his turnaround on the right baseline handed his team a 49-39 lea
with 6:35 remaining. Dave Schloss, a 6-foot-11 center wno had a season-high 1
points, also canned a three-pointer in the decisive run.
The Great Danes, who have won seven of their last eight contests, held their
advantage in the closing minutes behind the play of senior guard Todd Cetnar, wno
had 11 of his 15 points after halftime.
Stony Brook (6-18) led 23-19 in a first half which featured four lead changes and
two ties. However, Albany erased that deficit as Haggarty netted the final five points of

ALBANY FINISHES THIRD IN MEN’S RELAY AT MILLROSE GAMES
Troy’s Geoffrey York Places Fifth in 60-Meter Hurdles
New York, N.Y. — Harold Moore ran a strong third leg to help Albany finish third in the men’s
4x400 relay event at the 93 annual Millrose Games on Friday evening at Madison Square
Garden.
Moore sprinted 52.6 seconds to pass two teams, and Christian Bloomer (Ballston Spa
H.S.) held the Great Danes’ position on his anchor leg to post a relay time of 3:33.70. Colgate
was first in 3:27.40, while Lynchburg (Va.) College placed second in 3:29.09.
In the women’s 4x400 relay, Albany took fifth in 4:08.54, and was more than four seconds
behind first-place St. Francis, N.Y. (4:04.01). |
Albany assistant track coach Geoffrey York (Troy H.S.) finished fifth in the men’s 60-
meter hurdles. York, who won five NCAA Division III national titles in the 1990s as a member of
the Albany program, ran 7.73 seconds, and was just behind Allen Johnson, the 1996 Olympic
champion. Dominique Arnold, the '96 NCAA Division | winner, out-dueled current national
champion Terrance Trammell, of South Carolina, for first place. Arnold, who competed for
Washington State in college, was timed in 7.51.

ANDREA VIGER NAMED TO ECAC DIVISION | TRACK HONOR ROLL
Albany, N.Y. — University at Albany's Andrea Viger (Granville Central H.S.
) has
been selected to the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Women's
Indoor Track and Field Honor Roll, for the week ending Jan. 31.
Viger established an indoor school record with a time of 10:10.52 in the
3,000-meter run at Manhattan’s Jasper Relays on Jan. 29 at the New York( City
Armory. She finished second in the event.
Viger, a senior and native of Granville, N.Y., toppled the previous mark of
10:11.16 that was set by Tonya Dodge at the 1997 Brandeis Invitational. Dodge is
an assistant coach with the Albany cross country and track and field programs.

Haggarty, who had 12 first half points, became the 23" player in schdol
history to score 1,000 for his career. Todd Cetnar was the third Great Dane in

Albany (6-14) used a 10-0 run to capture a 53-51 lead with 8:08 remaining
on a Chris Gray lay-up. Marie Connors, who made her first appearance in| three
games, scored all six of her points during that stretch. Army (8-12) was hel
scoreless for six and a half minutes during that Albany run.
The Lady Knights tied the game at 60 with 4:21 left on a Megan Dempsey
three-point field goal. Dempsey scored 17 points, including three 3-pointers| for
Army. The Great Danes scored eight of the game’s next 10 points, sparked) by
three Liz Tucker free throws. Tucker had 12 points, and converted on 7-of-8 free
throws, while adding six rebounds and five assists.
Army cut Albany’s lead to 69-68 on a Therese Kelley three-pointer with 15
seconds remaining, but Buchanan made two free throws with 13 seconds left. A
three-point shot by Dempsey at the buzzer was off the mark.
Army, who held a 40-35 halftime advantage, led by as many as 10 points on
four different occasions in the opening period.
Cara Caffell had a career-high, nine points, for Albany, which shot 16+of-22
from the foul line in the second half. Kelley led the Lady Knights with 19 points.

Todd Cetnar Named Independent Player of the Week
Edinburg, Texas — University at Albany’s Todd Cetnar (Amsterdam H.S.) has
been selected the Division | Independent Player of the Week (Jan. 24-30) in men’s
basketball.
Cetnar averaged 18.5 points, 8.5 assists and 3.0 steals in pair of victories
last week, plus shot 65 percent from the field. Cetnar, a senior guard, had 19
points and hit a key 3-point field goal in the final two minutes in a 68-59 win |over
Dartmouth. He also scored 18 points to go with a career-high nine assists in a
108-84 victory over Southern Vermont.
The VA captain leads the Great Danes in scoring (15.3 ppg), assists (4.1 pg)
and steals (2.1 pg) this season. Albany has an 8-13 record heading into this
evening s game against Army.

BIG PURPLE GROWL SET FOR SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 5
Albany, N.Y. — The University at Albany's third annual Big Purple Growl will take
place on Saturday, February 5 at the Recreation and Convocation Center (RACC)
on campus. The evening’s winter homecoming activities get underway at 4:00
p.m., and are followed by a men’s and women’s Division | basketball
doubleheader against Stony Brook.
The Ferocious Feast, a dinner buffet presented in a renaissance style,
begins the schedule in the Physical Education Building. The RACC’s Key Atrium
will be the site of several family-oriented events, including magicians, jugglers,
jesters and games.
The Albany women take the floor at 5:30 p.m., while the men’s game
immediately follows at 7:30. At halftime of the women’s contest, the Class |of
1999's gift to the University will be unveiled. Brian Caverly, of Ballston Lake, has
created a larger-than-life bronze sculpture of the Great Dane. The school’
mascot will eventually be prominently displayed in the Key Atrium. President
Karen R. Hitchcock will host a ceremonial banner hanging in recognition of the
University’s upgrade to Division | athletics during the men’s halftime.
In addition, a lucky fan will be entered in the $25,000 Shoot for Loot contest,
sponsored by Lender's Choice Funding. Game prizes during the evening notice
one 25-inch Sanyo Stereo Television, one Sony Camcorder and PlayStation, two
book scholarships and a $500 cash prize toward a Spring Break trip.
General admission tickets are priced at $5.00 for the basketball
doubleheader. If you buy one ticket, you get one free. UAlbany upgraded its
intercollegiate athletics program for men and women to Division | in 1999-2000.
