UALBANY FOOTBALL DROPS THIRD STRAIGHT, FALLS AT BROWN, 35-7

Providence, R.I. — Sophomore quarterback Joe DiGiacomo threw a pair of touchdown
passes and Nick Hartigan ran for two scores, as Brown opened its season with a 35-7 non-
league victory over UAlbany on Saturday afternoon at Brown Stadium.

DiGiacomo, who was making his first start as a collegian, hooked up with tight end David
Turner on a 43-yard touchdown pass to begin the game. In a third-and-six situation, Turner
beat a UAlbany defender on the left sideline and raced untouched to the end zone.

UAlbany (0-3) answered with a 14-play, 76-yard drive on its first possession. Senior
uarterback Nicholas Bazan led a march in which the Great Danes converted on third down

three times. Bazan scored on a two-yard option around left end.

The Bears, who won four of their last five to end the 2003 campaign, would take a 14-7 lead
midway through the second quarter. DiGiacomo, who connected on 14-of-20 through the air
for 245 yards, guided his team on an eight-play drive. He hit Jarret Schreck on third-and-12
for 25 yards to keep the go-ahead march alive. Turner then hauled in a diving, one-handed
13-yard touchdown reception.

Brown took control in the third quarter by scoring on its opening two possessions. Hartigan,
who ran 26 times for 93 yards in the rain and mud, capped a five-play sequence with a two-
yard blast over right tackle. The 21-7 lead was set up by a 26-yard reception from DiGiacomo
to Turner, who finished with six catches for 136 yards.

Hartigan, who led the nation in rushing as a sophomore last year, then capped an 11-play
drive with a three-yard run over right guard. The key plan on Brown’s fourth touchdown came
when DiGiacomo connected with Carson Brennan on a third-and-3 near midfield.

“I thought the early part of the game was even, but things began to unravel,” said UAlbany

coach Bob Ford, whose team has lost its opening three games for the first time since 2000. “1
thought he (DiGiacomo) showed poise and made a couple of great throws. However, we are

@::i searching for our identity. We need to find better continuity in both our quarterback and

rushing attack, and need to take better advantage of the opportunities we are given.”

Brown’s Brandon Markey completed the scoring with a five-yard TD run in the final period.
UAlbany’s Bazan rushed for a team-high 53 yards and completed 9-of-12 for 36 more.

©... team has to come together and play together as one,” UAlbany linebacker Brian Becker
commented. “We made a number of defensive mistakes. We overpursued, had bad breaks on
balls and at times were even covering the wrong man.”

opportunity to draw even midway through the second quarter when outside linebacker Chris
Stellato picked off a Daniels’ pass and raced down the left sideline to the Fordham 13.
However, UAlbany’s offense failed to advance the ball, and freshman Chris Lynch missed a 30-
yard field goal following a bad snap from center.

Both defenses dominated the action throughout, as Fordham held a 207 to 186
advantage in total yards. Early in the final period, UAlbany quarterback Nicholas Bazan fumbled
a snap from center at his own 21-yard line and linebacker Patrick Orah made the recovery. The
Rams took five plays to reach paydirt. Hunte powered his way over left guard from one yard out
for a 14-0 lead with 9:43 remaining.

UAlbany threatened later in the period, when Uli Delgado, who rotated in a two-
quarterback system, engineered a drive with five consecutive completions. But the march
Stalled out on the Fordham 10, when Delgado’s fourth-down pass went off Topher Davey’s
fingertips in the end zone.

“There were two excellent defenses out there tonight,” said Albany coach Bob Ford,
whose team suffered its second consecutive shutout for the first time since 1990. “You can’t
beat yourself in a game like that, and we failed to consistently move the ball.”

The Great Danes’ two quarterbacks combined to complete just 14 of 39 passes for 105
yards. Daniels also did not enjoy much success, as the sophomore connected on five of 16
attempts for 30 yards and was sacked twice.

“Our defense gave a great effort,” commented Fordham’s Ed Foley, a former UAlbany
assistant who picked up his first win as a college head coach. “We had the benefit of playing
Rhode Island, an option team, in the first game, and that helped us prepare for this game. The
defense did what we expected them to do, while our offense grows up.”

UALBANY ANNOUNCES MEN'S & WOMEN'S BASKETBALL SCHEDULES FOR 2004-05

Albany, N.Y. — University at Albany Director of Athletics and Recreation Lee McElroy announced today the
school's men's and women's basketball schedules for the 2004-05 season. The Great Danes are entering
their fourth year of America East Conference competition.

The America East schedule for the men begins on Jan. 2 against Boston University at the Recreation
and Convocation Center. The season concludes with the America East Conference Tournament on March
4,5,6 and 12. Binghamton University's Events Center will host the first round, quarterfinals and semifinals.

The Great Danes' non-conference schedule is highlighted by a pair of Big East Conference teams in
Syracuse and Villanova. The Orangemen finished 23-8 last year and reached the NCAA Phoenix Regional
Sweet Sixteen. UAlbany also faces Villanova, a 2004 NIT quarterfinalist, on Dec. 22, and meets crosstown-
rival Siena on Nov. 23 at Pepsi Arena. Albany has an 11-game home schedule that includes a date with
defending America East champion Vermont on Feb. 16.

UAlbany will have a different look than in past seasons with all five starters back and Jamar Wilson,
the 2003 America East Rookie of the Year, returning from injury. Levi Levine, eighth among the league's
scoring leaders last year, and Jon lati, the conference's top rookie in 2004, averaged 14.3 and 14.0 points,
respectively. Wilson, who missed last season following knee surgery, finished second in the league in
scoring at 18.9 points per game as a freshman in 2002-03. Lucious Jordan, who led Loyola, Md. in scoring

with a 13.2 average before transferring to the UAlbany program, is set to make a significant contribution this
year. Head coach Will Brown is in his fourth season.

The UAlbany women's program opens its schedule on Nov. 19 at Morgan State, and then begins
America East Conference play against New Hampshire on Jan. 5. The conference tournament is slated for
March 9-12 at The Chase Family Arena in West Hartford, Conn.

The Great Danes are entered in Northern Arizona's Thanksgiving Tournament on Nov. 26-27 and
Viriginia's Cavalier Classic on Dec. 28-29. UAlbany will face Northern Arizona in the first round, while Air
Force and New Mexico State are also paired. The Great Danes will meet an Atlantic Coast Conference
school for the first time, when they tangle with Virginia. James Madison and American are matched up in the
opening round. An 11-game home schedule features a first-ever matchup with Syracuse on Dec. 7.

Head coach Trina Patterson led the Great Danes to a fourth-place finish in the America East stand-
ings and a postseason tournament semifinal appearance in her second season. UAlbany's 13-16 record
represented a five-win improvement over the previous campaign. Four starters return, including first-team
all-conference center Danielle Hutcheson, who was among the league's leaders in scoring (12.7 ppg) and
rebounding (9.6 rpg). Becky Ayers and Alicia Learn also scored in double figures at 12.2 and 10.0 points
per game, respectively. Maree Jones, a 6-foot-1 senior, averaged 7.4 points and 6.9 rebounds.

Two home doubleheaders are scheduled in February, while one twinbill is slated for Jan. 12 against
Binghamton. New Hampshire visits the Capital Region for Big Purple Growl, the University's Winter Home-
coming, on Feb. 5. America East-rival Maine is the opponent for the men and women on Feb. 12.

Great Danes Fall to Hofstra 45-0 in Season Opener

Hempstead, N.Y. — Quarterback Bobby Seck passed for four touchdowns and ran for another in leading Hofstra
to a 45-0 non-league victory over Albany in the season opener for both teams on Thursday evening at Shuart
Stadium.

Hofstra put together a pair of 80-yard scoring drives in the first quarter to take a 14-0 lead. Seck, who
completed 26-of-38 passes for 424 yards, led the Pride to its first score, when Terry Crenshaw scored on a
three-yard run over left guard. Seck then finished off a 14-play march, as he tossed a two-yard touchdown pass
to Devale Ellis with 2:27 left in the first period.

The Pride exploded for 24 points in the second quarter. Seck reached paydirt from one yard out on a
quarterback sneak for a 21-0 lead. His 55-yard pass to Ellis was the key play in the scoring sequence. On his
team’s next possession, Seck fired a 58-yard strike to Isaac Irby, as he connected with the 5-foot-9 receiver
over the middle in beating the blitz. The Pride added a 35-yard field goal by Chris Onorato and Seck’s 38-yard
scoring throw to Charles Sullivan following an Albany turnover.

T od the third quarter, Hofstra completed the scoring, when Seck threw his fourth touchdown pass of the game, a
34-yarder to Irby. The Great Danes, who dropped their third consecutive season-opening game, had two
chances to break up the shutout in the second half. The second opportunity was wiped out when reserve
quarterback Tom Banach fumbled the snap on a fourth-and-one play at the Hofstra 14.

“Part of what happened tonight is that we stepped up in the level of opponent, but failed to come to that level,”
Albany coach Bob Ford said. “There is enough blame to go around, but we’ll get it squared away. We need to
get it turned around in a hurry with a quality opponent like Fordham up next week.”

Albany quarterback Nicholas Bazan led his team with 86 rushing yards in his first start as a collegian.
However, Bazan completed just 5-of-16 passes for 44 yards, and fumbled twice. David Fantell added 11 carries

for 68 more yards on the ground. Hofstra’s Irby led all receivers with eight receptions for 168 yards and two
touchdowns.

“It was rough out there,” Bazan commented. “It felt good to be playing and get the kinks out. I finally calmed
down and felt more comfortable in the fourth series and started to throw the ball a little better.”
