MEN’S @1. SOCCER
The UAlbany men's soccer program faced an up and down season
a year ago. After starting the season with one win through the first seven
games, the Great Danes rebounded to win four consecutive matches and six
of eight games to secure a spot in the conference tournament. However, the
team dropped a 1-0 overtime decision to Boston University in the conference
quarterfinals. The Great Danes’ appearance in the America East Conference
Tournament quarterfinals marked the third time in as many seasons.
This season, expectations are high once again for a team that returns
six starters from last year’s squad, including two players who have previ-
ously received all-rookie honors. Head coach Johan Aarnio said the biggest
improvement since last season was, “We have returning players who know
each other and two seniors this year; so we are young but expect to have
good chemistry.”
OFFENSE
Despite the loss of standouts Yan Gbolo and Stephan Hall, the offense looks
to build on the experience of the junior class. Junior captain Erik DiLorenzo
(1g, 5a), a starter in 32 of 34 games played, and Gaby Seguin-Gauthier
(2g, 2a), one of only four players to start all 19 games last season, are the
leading returning scorers with seven and six points, respectively. Two other
juniors, Don Johnson and Trevor Elmo, have each netted a goal and dished
out two assists in their two seasons at UAlbany. Newcomers to the program
are also expected to break into the lineup and provide an offensive spark
for the Great Danes.
DEFENSE
The Great Danes look to replicate the feats of the 2004 season, when they
won a share of the America East regular-season title and the defense shut-
out 12 opponents and ranked among the national leaders in goals against
average. The loss of two-year captain Hall will be the most visible difference
for the Great Danes in the defensive end this season. However, an expe-
rienced core of players return to provide stability for Coach Aarnio's team.
DiLorenzo, a physical defensive player, and junior goalkeeper Steward Ceus
will lead the backfield. Senior Mike DiNeen and sophomore Brian Gordon,
who combined to make 37 starts last season, will also play a large role in
keeping the ball of out of the net.
GOALKEEPING
Ceus will look to build on a strong sophomore campaign with the Great
Danes this season. The 6-foot-6, 205-pound keeper started 18 of 19 games
last season. He recorded six shutouts and limited 12 opponents to one
goal or less, in recording seven wins and a 1.34 goals against average.
Accompanying Ceus will be freshmen Bradley Johnson, Andrew Conklin,
and Kevin Spangler.

PRESEASON NOTES
The Slate: UAlbany will use three non-conference tournaments and three
in-state match-ups to prepare for America East Conference regular-season
and post-season play. The Great Danes open the season at the Nike/Altel
Classic in Richmond, Virginia against Adelphi. The Panthers finished first
in the Atlantic Soccer Conference last season and earned a berth to the
NCAA Tournament. UAlbany will also face Virginia Commonwealth, Cornell,

squad for the second straight year in November.
Canadian Connection: Three Great Danes have been a part of the Ca-
nadian national soccer program's U-20 teams. Erik DiLorenzo and Taylor
McNamara were invited to the Canadian U-20 National Team's training
camp and Gaby Seguin-Gauthier played three games for the Canadian
U-20 National Team at the 2005 Francophone Games in Niger.
Paw Prints: The 2005 UAlbany squad became the first to advance one
round in a post-season tournament since the 1992 Great Danes won the
ECAC championship ... UAlbany is 16-6-4 over the last three seasons at
Varsity Field, including 8-4-1 in regular-season America East contests ...
Nine different Great Danes scored goals last season, three of whom netted
their first career score ... UAlbany has shut out 23 opponents over the last
three years and blanked six teams last season.
America East Conference Championship: The top six teams in the con-
ference standings at the end of the regular season qualify for the America
East Conference Men's Soccer Championship to be held Nov. 10-Nov.
18. The top two teams receive byes, while the other four teams will play
quarterfinal matches on Nov. 10. The semifinals will be held on Nov. 14
and the championship will be on Nov. 17 or 18 at the highest remaining
seed. The winner of the championship receives an automatic bid to the
