Conducted by the department of sociology with the support of the
university administration, a workshop on human relations for residence
assistants has been held this summer at State University of New York at
Albany. It wes led by Louis Lieberman, assistant professor of sociology,
and H. Alan Vermilye, lecturer of sociology.

In attendance were 20 students who have been resident assistants
or are scheduled to assume positions in student residences. The workshop,
for which graduate credit in sociology was earned, took place at Bleeker
Hall on the Dutch Quadrangle.

Participants worked toward the improvement of the process of resolving
inter-group and inter-personal problems of human relations as they appear
in modern communities. The major focus was on problems and on the reso-
lution of problems in the areas of racial conflict, sexuality, and drug
abuse as they are manifested in a university setting.

Class members created group oatiosn) scie situations and analyzed
variables in attempts to solve practical and philosophical problems arising
from the experiences of the participants themselves and from their percep-
tions of those problems within the context of university and societal norms.
The emphasis was upon practical, tension-reducing solutions, where possible,
as well as upon those aspects of problems which have broader intellectual

dimensions.

Among publications listed in the fall 1970 catalog of State University
of New York Press is The Winged Word by State University of New York at
Albany professor of comparative literature Harlan Berkley Peabody, The book
is a study of ancient Greek oral epic compositional technique.

Previous works in the field had established the fact and mode of oral
traditional composition, but an adequate understanding of oral compositional
techniques had been largely limited to Slavic contexts. The Winged Word shows
how the ancient Greeks composed songs at the speed of speech.

Albert B. Lord, an expert in the field, praises Professor Peabody's book
as "a great step forward in making the process of composition and transmission
of oral narrative poetry both in ancient Greece and in general terms better
understood ... It is one of the most significant books to appear in the field
of oral literature research."

Dr. Peabody, who joined the university faculty in 1966, is a graduate
of Bowdoin College and holds A.M. and Ph.D. degrees from Harvard University.
Before coming to Albany, he taught at Bowdoin and at Moorhead (Minn.) State
College. He also is an accomplished organist, a member of the American Guild
of Organists, and has held the position of organist at several churches.

The American Academy of Arts and Sciences awarded Dr. Peabody the
Monograph Prize in Humanities in 1961 for his thesis '"'Hesiod's ‘Works and
Days.' " He has written several articles in the field of literature, in addition
to his recent book.

A total of 4,693 students have registered for the 1970
summer session at State University at Albany. The number re-
presents a 10% increase over the 1969 enrollment of 4,251.
Figures were made available by Paul A. Saimond, acting director
of summer sessions.

Of the total enrollment this summer, 2,481 are graduate
students, as compared with 2,363 last year. Forty-five coun-
tries are represented by 114 international students at Albany,
while some 125 persons are studying in overseas programs con-
ducted by SUNYA. American colleges and universities from Maine
to California also are represented at Albany, with 463 under-
graduates from other institutions in attendance.

The summer session consists of a pre-session, which has
concluded; a regular session, now in progress; and a post-
session. Also, two three-week intensive study sessions, cur-
rently being conducted, are offered.

Rodney A. Hart has been named director of admissions at State University
of New York at Albany. Mr. Hart, who joined the university staff as an admis-
sions counselor in August 1965, was promoted to assistant director in July
1966 and to associate director in September 1968.

In commenting on his new position Mr. Hart said, 'My first thrust will
be toward developing the public relations aspect of the admissions office.
All too often the student, his parents, and even the university community
here do not understand the admissions policies. Some people rely greatly on
rumors which are always around, especially at an institution which is be-
coming increasingly competitive."

He continued, "We would hope to have the time and staff necessary to
effectively counsel prospective applicants and to discuss alternate educa-
tional plans with those who are not accepted. A great deal of our work will
involve ‘the counseling and accommodating, when possible, of returning
servicemen, and efforts will be made to further identify those subjective
criteria which might strengthen the validity of an admissions decision."

Mr. Hart added that several changes in staffing have taken place in the
undergraduate adilissions office. There now are two assistant directors and
three admissions counselors.

R. Thomas Flemming, assistant director for freshmen, joined the staff
in September 1967 as admissions counselor. He is a native of Newburgh who
received his bachelor's and master's degrees in the social sciences at SUNYA.
Mr. Flemming taught history at Cornwall Central Central School before coming
to Albany where he resides.

Returning to the staff after a year's leave of absence is Patrick A.
Foti of Schenectady. Mr. Foti will have complete responsibility for the

admission and academic orientation of transfer students. He is completing a
program at SUNYA leading to the doctorate in education, specializing in
guidance and personnel services.

Mrs. Bettye Zeringue of Troy will replace Robert Suggs, admissions coun-
selor, who is on a one-year leave of absence for doctoral studies. Mrs.
Zeringue will be responsible for coordination of admission to the Educational
Opportunities Program which is designed to admit selected students with vary-
ing cultural and social backgrounds and limited financial resources to a
program of academic, financial, and counseling services.

Mrs. Zeringue was most recently employed as a vocational counselor for
the Rensselaer County Neighborhood Youth Corps. She is a native of Chicago
and a graduate of Southern University in New Orleans where she majored in
psychology.

Also an admissions counselor is Carolyn King, of Delmar. In 1969 Miss
King was awarded a Master of Arts in special education from the University
of Connecticut. She has an undergraduate degree from State University in
Buffalo where she specialized in exceptional education. Miss King has taught
for the Board of Cooperative Educational Services in Albany and also has had
experience with the academic counseling of students and their parents.

The other admissions counselor is Anita Nancy Avakian. Miss Avakian was
graduated from Manhattanville College in Purchase with the degree Bachelor
of Music. She also studied at the Paris Conservatory and at the State Uni-

the international study programs
conducted by State University of
New York at Albany.

IMMEDIATE

Participation in the broadened international study programs conducted
by State University of New York at Albany is increasing. Currently, nearly
one hundred are enrolled in one semester or full year study programs conducted
in Singapore, Wurzburg, Nice, and Guadalajara.

International study is conducted under the jurisdiction of the Albany
university's College of Arts and Sciences at all levels of the undergraduate
program. The college places strong emphasis upon the international dimensions
in all branches of learning, in the natural and social sciences as well as
in the humanities. The philosophy underlying international education in the
College of Arts and Sciences is that study at the university level mandates
a cross-cultural approach and that international education, therefore, is
indigenous to all of the arts and sciences.

Thirteen students are in the program at Nanyang University, Singapore;
20 at the University of Wurzburg, West Germany, 43 at the University of Nice,
France, and 17 at the University of Guadalajara in Mexico. The latter program
is for one semester only each year.

The School of Criminal Justice, State University of New York at Albany, has moved
from Pierce Hall on the downtown campus to new quarters in the lower level of the library
building on the academic podium of the main campus. The relocation is one of several now
underway at the university and affecting schools, clinics, centers, and offices. Entrance
to the new location of the School of Criminal Justice is at the south side of the library,
between the University Library and the Humanities Building.

The Northeastern New York Speech Center, Formerly located at Draper on the downtown
campus is now on the first floor of Husted, also on the older campus. Moved also from
Draper, to the first floor of Richardson, has been the Reading Clinic.

This week the Learning Disabilities Center was moved from Draper to the first floor of
Husted. Earlier Faculty-Student Association had moved its office from Draper to the Exec-
utive Tower at Stuyvesant Plaza.

In other changes, the office of State University of New York Central Administration
machine services was moved from the first floor of Draper to the lower level, and the
lease providing six class rooms for Albany High School at Draper has been cancelled.

Currently the ''old'’ Draper building and Draper annex are being readied for occupancy
by the Graduate School of Public Affairs and the School of Social Welfare now located at
Sayles Hall on the downtown campus. Both schools are slated to be moved on Aug. 17,
leaving the buildings clear for reconversion to residence space for about 240 students
beginning Aug. 29.

Hawley library has been renovated to accommodate the GSPA library, Books will be
moved there from the library at Pierce at the end of the summer session.

Social Welfare will be located on the first and second floors at the western side of

Draper and GSPA will occupy the remainder of the building. The schools will share classrooms.

Social Welfare field units, an extension of the School of Social Welfare, remain at
Richardson, The Center for Economic Education moves from Draper to first floor
Richardson. Additionally, other small research offices will be moved from Draper
to Richardson. Some rooms of the Milne School will be shifted around but the school will
have the same amount of space in Richardson, although on a different floor. The school
continues to have science classrooms and laboratories on the second floor of Husted.

David Fotheringham, director of university systems analysis with a major assignment
in space studies, commented that there has been a basic problem in arranging for the
accommodation of some 200 additional staff, including 100 faculty. Also, space has had to be
found for new projects and programs. Another problem has been the delay the completion

of Indian Quadrangle.

Listed in the fall 1970 catalog of the State University of New York Press is

The Philosophy of Chrysippus by Josiah B. Gould, Jr., associate professor of phil-

osophy, State University at Albany. Dr. Gould is in his second year at the university.

The book is a reconstruction of the philosophy of an eminent Stoic philosopher,
based on the fragmentary remains of his voluminous writings. Chrysippus of Cilicia
lived during approximately the last three-quarters of the third century B.C. He studied
in Athens and became the third head of the Stoa, one of the four great schools of phil-
osophy of the Hellenistic period.

Dr. Gould works from the assumption that only those doctrines specifically
ascribed to Chrysippus can be used to reconstruct his philosophy. He thus emerges
with a clear account of Chrysippus' views in the fields of logic, natural philosophy, and
ethics. In order that his thought may be viewed in context, Gould also provides a back-
ground picture in which Chrysippus worked. Additionally, an account of Chrysippus'
life and reputation in antiquity, as well as a description of modern assessments of his
position in the Stoa, are included.

The author is a graduate of Lynchburg (Va.) College and holds advanced degrees
from Florida State University (M.A.) and the Johns Hopkins University (Ph.D). Prior
to coming to Albany, Dr.Gould had taught at the University of California Santa Cruz,

Claremont (Cal. ) Graduate School, the Rockefeller Institute, and the American University.
