i The University at Albany has published an updated Speakers
Bureau Directory for use by service clubs, church groups, schools,

special interest groups, businesses, and professional organizations.

i More than 150 speakers are available through the Speakers

i

Bureau on a wide variety of subjects. Some of the new topics in the

directory ‘are taxes, sexuality, Black culture, poetry, and new forms

of energy. Among other subjects are physical fitness, careers, foreipn

relations, politics, ethics, communications, economy, aging, and arts.

NARTIGAN NAMED BUSINESS VICE PRESTDENT AT UNIVERSITY AT ALBANY.

John Hartigan, 45, who has been serving as acting vice presi=
dent for finance and business at The University at Albany since last
summer, has heen confirmed by the State University of New York Board
of Trustees to that position. His recommendation for the post by Presi-
dent Emmett B, Fields culminated a five-month search which screened 154
applications.

Mr. Hartigan, who previously was assistant vice president and
controller at the university, is responsible for a wide range of pro-
prams, including budgeting, accounting, payroll, internal auditing,
management analysis, purchasing, personnel, bursar, student accounts,
Affirmative Action, plant operation, and security.

The new vice president is a praduate of Siena College and
has done graduate work at the Maxwell School of Public Administration,
He formerly was employed with the New York State Division of the Budget

and with the Attorney General's Office in criminal investigation work.

ALBANY PROFESSOR NAMED TO NATIONAL Post

Francis Femminella, associate professor in The University at

Albany's department of educational policy, programs, and institutions,

foundations of education unit, has accepted an invitation from Secretary

of Health, Education, and Welfare Joseph Califano to serve as chairman
on the National Advisory Council on Ethnic Studies of the Office of

Education,

Dr. Femminella, a member of the Albany faculty since 1967,
is a specialist in ethnic studies programs. fe previously has served
as vice chairman of the National Advisory Council on Ethnic Heritage
Studies.

i The educator served on the faculties of Adelphi Suffolk Col~
lege and Fordham University before coming to Albany. He also has had

experience as a social investigator and social worker. Dr. Femminella

is a graduate of Iona College and holds advanced degrees from Fordham

and from the New York University School of Education, where he earned

a PhD in sociology and anthropology.

ALBANY FACULTY RECEIVE SUNY AWARDS

Eight members of The University at Albany faculty share four of the 30
awards provided through this year's State University. of. New York Faculty Grants
for the Improvement of Underdraduate Instruction. Scholarship and research grants
totaling some $59,000 have been awarded to faculty members on 10 SUNY campuses
from the 225 applicants who submitted proposals. The program recognizes excel~

lence and innovation in undergraduate teaching.

The recipients at Albany are Arnold Foster, sociology, in collaboration
with Paul Wheeler, sociology, and Robert Stierer, management and planning, $3,599
| for "Development of Teaching Modules for Sociology"; Natalie Kisseleff, Slavic
languages and literature, $2,000 for "Carramate Project for Russian civireacien

“Studies"; Georges Santoni, French, $2,000 for "Teaching Cross-Cultural Under-

standing Through Visual Media"; and Linda St. Clair, rhetoric and communication,

in collaboration with Stephen Tavlor and Leo Lichtig, of the same department, $2,120
for "Group Communication Process and Patterns: Videotaped."

An 1l-member Central Awards Committee reviewed the statewide proposals

and made grant recommendations. Awards are made in five categories ~ professional,

fine arts, social sciences, natural sciences, and humanities,

CLILZENS LAUREATE COMMITTER APPOLNTED

The Committee to plan the first Annual Citizens Laureate Awards Program
sponsored by The University Foundation at Albany has been named by Nedwin Fmerson,
General Chairman.

Appointed were Mrs. Albert Hessberg, II, of Slingerlands, Co-chairman;
Marshall $. Hannock, President, Home Savings Bank, dinner arrangements; Richard
Kukuk, Regional Vice President, Niagara Mohawk Power Corporation; tickets; Louis
R. Salkever, Vice President for Research and Dean of Graduate Studies, The Uni-
versity at Albany, program; and Nathan &. Kullman, Jr., Director of Public Informa~
tion, New York State Teachers’ Retirement System, vublicity. Ex officio members
of the committee are Alan V. Iselin, President of The University Foundation at-
Albany and Lewis P, Welch, Vice President for University Affairs, The University
at Albany.

To be held in mid-June, the awards dinner will recognize distinguished
service to the four-county Albany area (Albany, Rensselaer, Saratoga and Schenectady
counties) by two outstanding members of the community - a citizen and a higher
education faculty member, According to Emerson, "It will be a brilliant evening
program that will capture the imagination and support of all residents Interested
in the cultural, economic, educational and social growth of the area".

The award is aimed at increasing community sunport within the area and
encouraging residents to share their talents to enhance the quality of life in
the Capital area community.

Previously named to the Awards Selection Committee were Thomas M. Whalen,
TIL, Chairman; Arthur #8. Bueche, Vice President, Research and Development Center,
