Synopsis of Scenes

PROLOGUE

The exterior of the Frome farmhouse in northern New England.

ACT |

Scene 1: The kitchen. Spring, twenty years earlier.

Scene 2: Outside the doorway of the vestry of the Starkfield Congrega-
tional Church. The following winter. Evening.

Scene 3: The crest of a hill above Starkfield. A few minutes later.
Scene 4: The exterior of the Frome farmhouse. A few minutes later.

ACT Il

Scene 1: The Frome bedroom and kitchen. Five-thirty the following
morning.
Scene 2: The kitchen. That evening.

ACT Ill

Scene 1: The bedroom. The next evening.
Scene 2: The kitchen. The following afternoon.
Scene 3: The crest of the hill. Half an hour later.

EPILOGUE
The kitchen. Twenty years later. The action follows that of the Prologue.
