Goldoni’s THE MISTRESS OF THE INN opened os La locandiera
on Dec. 26, 1750. William E. Smith, whose new version we use, points
out that in this comedy of intrigue sex, food, drink, money and status are
the mainsprings of every action; that the characters’ verve is directed to-
wards some false assumption about life in their effort to ‘fact a part.’’
We see Mirandolina striving for freedom against the servile protec-
tion, money, and paterfamilias of a closed society. Armed only with the
art of being a woman, she is prophetic of a revolution in human rights at
a time when woman’s equality was not even discussed.
