president collins holds aloft the torch of knowledge at traditional torch night ceremony

with the publication of this first issue of the
torch, it is appropriate to comment on why
this particular name has been chosen . . . it
symbolizes one of the oldest and most mean-
ingful traditions here at state .. . every year,
on the night before commencement, the sen-
ior class is formally inducted into the alumni
association as the senior class president re-
ceives the torch . ... this ceremony dates back
to the year 1924 when the senior class slowly
turned and walked into the darkness singing
“great fire kindled for thy children” . . . sev-
eral years ago, the freshmen torch night was
established . . . since then, every freshmen
becomes an official member of our college
community as he lights his torch and receives
his beanie . . . we begin and end our life here
with a torch . . . symbol of wisdom and

a year of change has come to an end... our office has moved across
the hall . . . our name has changed from pedagogue to torch . . . we were
transformed from an institution of free education to one charging tuition.

through all these innovations the enthusiasm of the torch has remained.
i'd like to express my gratitude to the following people who have made it
possible for me to say that i didn’t have to “go it alone”...

to ro petrick, who did so much that a simple “thanks” seems inadequate

... to toby tlusty, who always had a new idea... to penny grastorf, business
manager, our silent partner, who kept us in the black . . . to the photograph-
ers; paul bachorz, who was always “on the scene” with his camera and often
a source of moral support . . . to john meyer, the up and coming photo-
grapher, who provided many outstanding pictures . . . to terry reilly, doug
ross and terry fitzgerald, who sought to give us original shots around the
campus .. . to corky petrick, seniors, who frequently braved the elements
across the park to work . . . to gretchen monroe, photography coordinator,
who kept the business of picture planning orderly . . . to dick stenard, sports,
who pulled the sports section out of the bag . . . to carol eaton, sororities,
the optimist of the staff . . . to sandi lisson, college life, a “greenhorn” who
did a difficult section without hesitation . . . to lou taylor, academic, who
divided his time between working on the book and seeking a contract for
next year . . . to joan versusky, activities, who kept the many details of her
section in order . . . to kay duers and her staff, advertitsing, who worked
diligently on a formidable job . . . to liz honnet, literary editor, who spent
hours reading galley proofs . . . to dottie crowley, honoraries, for whom i
had my fingers crossed . . . to mary jo sollecito, dormitories, who wrote an
original section . . . to arthur flynn and the o’toole publishing company, who
have offered needed technical aid and have kept patience . . . to the state
university news staff who patiently shared a crowded room with us... . lastly,
to steve, who kept telling me it would all be worth jit in the end...

thanks so very much,

shirley blanchard
