the cool of the evening.
that’s what johnny sain, a major
league pitching coach from a genera-
tion ago, called that feeling that a
pitcher had after winning a game. that
feeling of easy confidence, of having
proven yourself until your next start.
after years of not-so-cool evenings,
the new york mets have indeed proven
themselves.
following a regular season in which
they clinched the nl east around, oh,
april 10th or so. the mets faced the
houston astros and mike scottin the nl
championship series. scott kept the as-
tros in the series with two brilliant
pitching performances, but the mets
leading the series 35 games to 8, rallied
for a three run ninth inning comeback
to tie game 6. the mets eventually won
in 16innings to take the series 4 games
to 8. on deck was the world series and
the american league champions the
boston red sox.
the two uninspiring performances
at shea stadium had the mets down &
games to none. the faithful new york
fans began to wonder what their team
had left after the draining series
against houston. after taking 8 of 5 at
boston, the mets returned to new york;
happy to simply still be in the series.
however, the mets soon found them-
selves in a position that even gary
carter’s smile could not get them out
of: one out away from elimination, in
fact, one strike away from elimina-
tion.
it was here, the tenth inning of game
6, that the 1986 mets performed more
miracles in ten minutes than the mir-
acle mets of 1969 performed in an en-
tire season. a few seeing eye base hits.
a walk. a bob stanley wild pitch with a
count of no balls and two strikes. and
then the image of the red sox first
baseman bill buckner just staring at
mookie wilson’s ground ball that had
trickled through his legs into shallow
right field. Incredibly, almost implau-
Ssibly, the mets were still alive and
their entire season had now come to a
single game. and in game seven, the
mets rallied for a miraculous victory
to win their first world championship
in 18 years.
now there is no complaining about
the ineptitude of the mets. it has been
replaced by a relaxed easiness, by a
strength that fans of defending
champs should have.

covers groping for the snooze button on the alarm clock which will
permit nine more glorious, precious minutes of sleep. nothing in life is
more dear than these nine minutes....
hazily, you think of fumbling down the ice-patched sidewalk to miss
another green suny bus, blurring past into the distance. you wait. you
sigh. students begin gathering in flocks about the designated stop,
each trying to estimate the precise location of the door when the bus
screeches to a halt. suddenly you’re in the midst of a dozen distorted
faces, breathing hot, moist air into your face, shoving, pushing and
Squeezing in various directions. the herd gradually dissipates, and
your eyes raise to watch the bus door shut in front of your frozen nose.
five minutes until your 10:10. you sigh.
nodding off in your first two classes, you realize the lack of coffee
you had that morning. out of class, you trudge to the cafeteria greeted
by more herds, filing into innumerable lines. another one of the indis-
tinguishable cattle you trod along, waiting to wait for more waiting.
facing the cashier, a blank stare grows across your face. you have no
money. you climb up the stairway and the line for the moneymatic
machine reaches you before you step through the door. you wait. you
sigh.
after countless lines, countless herds, countless faces, and countless
sighs, the day is done. crossing the podium you slip on a patch of ice,
falling down
down ... you glance
up, the rectangular
green blur roars off
into the fog...

We met on freshman orientation — within the first
five minutes. Ilene’s undeniable warmth, clever hu-
mor and unique beauty became apparent within the
first ten. Excited and nervous, we wondered what the
next four years would bring.
We knew nothing would ever be the same again.
No longer the new kid on the block, now the successful
sophomore Ilene found time for everything; time to
study, time to bar hop, and time to stay up all night
talking. Ilene was the ultimate friend.
While the rest of us were spending Spring Break ’86
completely carefree and relaxed in the gloriously sun-
ny outdoors, Ilene was diagnosed with a serious ill-
ness.
We knew nothing would ever be the same again.
On October 11, 1986, Ilene Meryl Fleischer died. The
anguish, disbelief and emptiness of her survivors
reawakened at more astounding levels than ever be-
fore.
We knew nothing would ever be the same again.
We remember Ilene, whose dimples could melt ice-
bergs, who sang and danced with a hairbrush ‘“‘micro-
phone” on the radiators in her tower suite. We remem-
ber Ilene, the determined, intelligent business major,
who had visions of an office in the IBM building in
Manhattan. We remember Ilene who, at age 21 was too
young to die.
It took a fortune cookie, broken open a day before her
death, to encapsulate all that we’d been feeling; but too
often forget when we’re engrossed with our daily lives
and the mapping of our futures:

i thought i could write the conven-
tional message in the yearbook. you
know, write about those moments
that we all share in the university,
like the first night one of us gets
trashed and winds up disgorging the
contents of the stomach, or maybe
that one night, when you are tired
and irritable and your roommate
walks in with a date and has the cour-
age to ask you to sleep out for the
night. i would much rather take this
space the editor offered and use it to
deliver a message to a very important
and dear group of people. all in all,
this will apply to everyone.
to be a minority student in a tradi-
tional university is not an easy thing.
next to the fact that many minority
students come from weak educational
institutions, giving us a direct disad-
vantage, we also have to cope with the
culture shock of being here.
the average albany student comes
from a homogenous background
where one has had limited exposure
to various cultural and social groups
other than their own. once here, the
minority community is faced with
the reality that there is only 1,000 of
us and 14,000 traditional students.
this institution represents a differ-
ent social environment, educational
system and customs for the minority
community. the university at albany
is a traditional institution that is cold
and insensitive to the concerns and
the welfare of blacks, hispanics,
asians and social minorities such as
gay, lesbians, and disabled students.
here is where minority students are
confronted with differential treat-
ment, practiced by all agencies of the
university. this perpetuates a lack of
confidence and builds inferiority
complexes. we can not help to won-
der, what future do we have here?
you better learn quickly to control
your feelings of bitterness. these feel-
ings can only hold you back and be
detrimental to your future. you can
not afford to develop a separatist atti-
tude. it builds racist feelings no dif-
ferent from those beliefs and atti-
tudes held by the klan. the bitterness
that reminds you of all the injustices
committed to you and your ancestors
for the past 200 years serves a pur-
pose. you can not forget, and should
not try to forget, the history, the
struggle for the people of color. but,
you should know that letting those
bitter sentiments overcome you will
lead you to believe that you are inferi-
or; that you can not compete with the
others; that you can not get involved
because you feel disliked. well, you
have defeated yourself before the
blow of the whistle announcing the
start of the game. you have fallen vic-
tim to bitterness. instead, why don’t
you take control of your life and ev-
erything around you.
blacks and hispanics have tradi-
tionally been absent from the polls.
our attitude has been, why should i
participate in the electoral process
when this government is not my gov-
ernment? we here believe that there
is something wrong with the system.
this can only be but a myth. there is
nothing wrong with the system. the
problem lies with the players of the
game. the system allows anybody to
empower themselves. however, the
players control how the system is
used and who can participate. those
in power do not want to share their
power. if anything, they would like to
gain more. most likely itis the whites
who are in control of the game. power
plus ignorance and prejudice leads to
racism. do not turn your back on the
system. you can not afford not to be
part of the game.
my point is simple. if you have in-
terests and they are being discussed
in the conference room, you can only
take care of them and defend your
concerns as long as you are in the con-
ference room. if you are sitting out-
side the door asking for someone to
defend your point then once again
you have lost the game.
we need to educate ourselves so
that we can qualify to play in the
game. we need to get involved at all
levels of society so that we can learn
to play the game.
when one of us makes it into the
conference room, we can not be as ig-
norant as to choose to abandon them.
remember, being part of the game is
not enough. the game is tough and
there are more of them than there are
of us. they are not playing in the
game because they are whitewash or
oreos. they are playing because they
use the system, and furthermore,
they are playing because they play as
a team, not as individuals or as sepa-
ratists.
do not be afraid to join in the game.
we play the game better than they do.
to be on the court is the important
thing, regardless of all the forces
working against us. even your peers
may desert you because you are mov-
ing into a place assumed not to be
yours. dammit, we have as much
right as our fellow man to play and
succeed in the game. we need to be
involved at all levels, from little
league baseball to the most advanced
teams of engineers and professionals.
i know of two people that played
the game better than anybody else.
two immortal individuals know and
respected by the entire universe, who
are prize winners. just think of them.
dr. martin luther king, jr. and mu-
hamed ghandi. look at the losers, hit-
ler, reagan, and botha — they are go-
ing nowhere.

i sit here extremely confused about how i am feeling. i have
learned so much this year, met so many incredible people, done
so incredibly much. but like anything in my life there were
many obstacles to overcome. the obstacles i experienced doing
this yearbook were relatively easy to overcome, although some
of the other obstacles in my college life were not.
during my junior year here in albany my mother was mur-
dered in n.y.c. this life shattering tragedy was an obstacle i
thought i would never be able to overcome. in many waysi still
haven’t; but with the help and support of all my friends, i
found the strength and courage to persevere, and most impor-
tantly the ability to honestly smile again.
so now i complete this project by doing something that
means aS much to me as this yearbook does. i express my
kenny kirsch — editor in chief
gary gold — for being you — the absolute best. i
have taken many classes and i have met many
people; never having been inspired. you have
inspired me! thank you for all your advice, and
for helping me learn how to be a better person
— “compromise’’ — yeah that’s it. you will
never be forgotten!!!

i did. the times will never fade: friendly’s, the

tammy — i think about how lonely this year
could have been — working, shooting, print-
ing... but you were there. pulling my hair out
