In the beginning, standing at the corners of the Chemistry and Biology buildings, I would look
imaginatively down the inner cement corridor of the podium. The vast lines of lofty pillars on either
side seemed to form a solid, impenetrable wall to my eye.

| suppose that the university is an imposing thing, after all, if one sees it as an oasis of personal and
intellectual freedom. For me, the past was a misty montage of embarassments and adolescent joys
which would no longer materialize to haunt me. To the future was a repressive system, patiently —
even confidently — waiting to ensnare me.

For four years, mine was to be a life of higher concerns. Somehow, in those years, I would
intellectually form my youthful ideals and desires into mature, useful service towards humanity.

But in reality, illusions lose their grandeur, and as | walked down the podium time after time, I no
longer looked up at my surroundings. On the other hand, | began to notice that as I walked, familiar
things more and more emerged from behind the concrete formations to my side.

Here were the friends made and the loves won and lost. Unlike those of my early years, however,
the friends did not seem so permanent, the lovers more real than ideal, more flesh than fantasy.

I passed my classrooms also, and I
was reminded of the few times where
my education raised my conscious-
ness, and the all too many mediocre
experiences which thwarted all hopes
of an intellectual sharing of ideas.

I remembered the occasional mo-

ments here when I was inspired to-

ward dreams of a lofty destiny, but
also the countless others when I was
forced to observe how unsteadily
ideals stand under the weight of hu-
man inadequacy. Then again, when
the causes crumbled, there always
were outlets available for the rebuild-
ing of a frustrated ego.

And after four years, as I leave the podium one final time, I
am aware that the friends do not walk with me, that the loves

remain only in light of experience, that so many words of
imply forgotten.

In years to come — years which, by comparison, may blend
together into sober consistancy of purpose — I will look back at
the four years which redirected my life.

The places and the faces will appease me, embarrass me, and
possibly even thrill me. But it will be the value of the years
themselves, that I will consider with most awe: years that could
not change me from what I was, but instead, through relation-
ships and reflection, showed me what I am and always will be.

On August 27, 1971, I entered East-
man tower with luggage in each hand,
one day before my college career began.
No one opened the door for me.

Entering the small lobby, I saw hud-
dled together about fifty students, com-
plete with boxes, trunks, and parents,
ready to enter three small elevators. The
students were loudly attempting to claim
each box and trunk as their own, while
trying even harder to give the impression
that the parents didn’t belong to anyone.

I remember entering an elevator in a
rush. When composed, | saw that the
elevator was going up, that there was a
suitar case leaning on my head, and a
middle-aged woman leaning on my arm.
My luggage was gone.

I looked around at the other twenty
students present, who, together with
myself in twenty square feet, were mak-

od TO ak tou ing the elevator legally unsafe for oc-
o. - FF — a cupancy. Amazingly, we all seemed to
= 2 ignore each other. I finally met the gaze
of a guy in another corner of our cubi-
cle, and he smiled, as I did, at our pre-
dicament.

Four years later, I look at this, my
school, where the weather is bad, and
where the people often coldly rush by
even when it is not. Sharing of emotions
didn’t come easy here, but then, if they

Yet it is not always a comforting
thing: becoming susceptible to criti-
cism over my mental lapses and physi-
cal blunders. Even worse, I run the
risk of not being noticed at all.

who knows when | am doing well or
not. Usually it is the people I work
with who can see the difference, and
at other times it is the people who
witness my performance.

Yet even when no one else can
grasp the difference, I can. The differ-
ence is me. Whether I seem to be
standing out more resplendent than
the most brilliant spotlight, or lost
amidst a paleness of obscurity, the
final accountability and judgement for
my work is my own.

So is vanity the motivation for my extra efforts
here? That depends. If I try and do it a little better
amidst the frustrations and lack of proficiency about
me, it is simply because I take pride in what I do, and
have concern for my self-concept.

But if I strive to do it a little differently, to add some
style to the performance, then clearly, I am out to
impress you. And why not? I’m part of the only game in

town, and it is through you that I have meant some-

thing.

There is still a dreamer within me. It doesn’t

worry about getting a job or finding security in
life. It does not think of itself. It uses the
university to reach out to help the world.

There is a frightened being encasing the
dreamer. [t is afraid to go out alone and risk |
itself: to have its self-expression land face down
in front of a big unfeeling world.

I am a person who needs a form of spiritu-
al aid; the kind one finds by looking around
oneself. Like seeing people out of their own,
doing small things in a big way; people who
retain enough bits of love and personal style
in which to label their work their own.

It is not easy, living with a dreamer inside oneself. It
was created first of all, by people who seemed bigger
than life. And so the dreamer did not merely ask to do
the things that they did; it yearned to move with their
ethereal flow, speak with the tones of their faith, to
control the human stage with their same nobility of
performance.

Yet, even now, as increasing fear and apathy choke
my strains of harmony, | find that my heroes of a
childhood long past seem to all but fade away. With
them, the dreamer dies also; and then I will truly be
left alone — alone with my fearful self, who en-
courages me to mix in with the crowd, to hide from

life.

It is possibly my own fault for idolizing those that,
in the end, proved all too human. Then again, it may
be the fault of the world, and so the university, which
never embraced the essence of love behind their melo-
dies.

Their song has ended, | acknowledge in tired strains, but does the melody
linger on?

I hear the distant echoes, of course, as I walk the
cement corridors of my university. They call for
impeachment, economic and social justice, education-
al freedom, for peace. They are idealistic, but they
are angry voices as well.

And they are distant because they are not shouting
in 1973, 74, 75. They come from four years before,
or more. I do not hear my voice among them, nor my

friends.
I would be fooling myself in believing that in the

end, we won anyway. We were ignored when we
screamed, and so, like uncertain children will, we
retreated. So much of what we fought against still
remains, while so much of me remains silenced.

And my friends and I played little part in his
demise. In the end he showed us all, that the only
thing that defeats the Nixons of the world, are the
Nixons of the world — and those they trust.

But if only he had resigned before summer vaca-
tion, then once more we might have celebrated to-
gether. Then again, the students that did the fighting
in 68, 69, didn’t take “vacations”. I can remember
hearing them — always.

When I awoke, there was no one next to me. The line had gone and I had to return the next day.
Eventually I, and a hoard of other angry students, made it past the glass doors of the bursar’s

office. I don’t believe that anyone bothered to open them first, because my face suddenly had
numerous cuts and slashes on it.

The first thing I noticed was that there were only two windows for my line. A middle- aged woman
worked at one, and the other had an out-to-lunch sign on it. That would not have bothered me, except
for the fact that there seemed to be 75 people running relay races behind the one woman working.

I watched one woman in particular. She put a piece of paper in one desk. Then she talked to some
guy and their arms waved around. Then she ran to the other side of the room, talked to some woman,
and they waved their arms also. Then she ran back to the desk, got the piece of paper, and put it in a
desk at the other side of the room. Then she reversed the whole process.

One way or another, however, I have found some excuse to wait until the last
minute of every semester, in order to finally begin applying myself. Each year I
have said that things would be different this time, and each year during finals
week, I find myself in the library at 8:00 a.m., cramming like crazy for my 9:00

exam.

A lot of people do it this way. There are about 30 of
my cohorts with me right now, here in the second floor
lounge of the library. The only difference for a few of
us, is that this is the final week of our final semester at
Albany State. The others here are still telling themselves
that this will not happen next semester. Poor deluded

Pass the time. Seems that if it has
been for fifteen minutes or four years,
that’s mostly what I have done here.
College was going to be different. I
was going to utilize my mind, explore
it through education.

Instead, education simply occupied
my mind. Occupied it with tests that I
had to take, teachers that were going
to grade me, with numbers that began
to express my intrinsic value more
than words. Occupied also, with the
idea that I was just watching it all
happen.

Maybe I never really expected it to be any different.
The world isn’t made that way. It passes the time with
thoughts of dollars and cents, because the material rewards
are few at the end of an intellectual search. Why should
the university encourage me to believe any other way?

And so I have been trained to deal with the world.
Now I just wait to see how I will be received. Others
are not so fortunate; they can only pass the time until
the days slip by and run out. What it is that they wait
for, is something they can’t take the time to under-
stand.

So why should I try to understand it, for them; I
am not here to discover what degrees of happiness and
sorrow are to be found with the passage of time. I am
here to pass the time until my grades come back. In
the meantime, I was at least happy here.

therefore, because it purports to provide
knowledge: truths about ourselves, about
existence. Within an atmosphere of simple
honesty and integrity, in fact, education
might indeed solve the dilemmas of man-

kind.

Universities

have, from time to time,
been built upon respect for that ideal. It
should be respected by us as well, even as
we look around and tind the possibility

difficult to imagine.

Man has ever longed to make inroads into the vast source of
his insecurities. The universe has been a cold, aguish mystery for
mere mortals. Since the caveman, it has been a contributor
towards dark fears, inexpressible yearnings, dogmatic beliefs. It
will remain so until we fully understand what is out there, and
how much.

Though each spatial discovery and its subsequent new ques-
tions seems to diminish our earthly position further, we must yet
explore. Only exploration and final discovery can give man his
greatest opiate of all: order.

As man’s concerns advanced beyond merely getting out of the
rain in order to heat food, he became a social being. He became
thoughtfully provoked, either out of desires for friendship or
fears of alienation, to discover what other men had done with
their portions of earth.

Today we look upon different peoples for basically the same

For some reason, when I found out I was going to be editor of TORCH
75, the first thing I thought about writing was this, the staff page. I really
don’t know why. Maybe because at that point the TORCH only had one staff
member. In many ways, it was like starting out on a 320 page adventure.

Now it’s finished. No more 18 hour TORCH days, no more arguing with
Bernie about the senior section, no more deadlines for Vinny, no more trying
to convince Rose that we’re really not going to miss our deadline by too
much, no more getting ulcers fearing that we really are going to miss our
deadline by too much. It’s all within us now. Maybe that’s why this page was
the first thing | thought about writing. Just maybe the most important things
about putting together a project like a yearbook are the people one gets to
‘know and the experiences one encounters. Personally I feel much richer for
having done it.

I would like to take this space to thank the staff for giving me good times
and bad times; for arguing, influencing and throughout, helping.

It would be an injustice to exclude the names of John Chow, Chuck
Yenson, Aralynn Abare, Ron Simmons, Marty Benjamin, Gary Gold, and Bill
Sloane from this book. Their direct and/or indirect influences can be seen
throughout TORCH 775.

Special thanks go to Mr. and Mrs. Martin L. Slawsky—my parents, for
listening, caring and understanding; to Sally Goodall, and the Tuesday night
Campus Center Staff for helping us get through a lot of red tape at the last
minute; and to David Porter — associate editor, for keeping your cool those
many times when I was losing mine.
