long after we've forgotten who played at
mayfest or what the weather was like for
hap day, we will remember those things
we did day after day while at albany.
going to class, going to the library, going
to the longbranch, going on the suny
buses, and going back home after a day
of going, are the things we all had to deal
with, the things we all share in common.
the following pages are dedicated to
those activities.

when i came here we had one year down on the old campus. the

one year on the old campus was very pleasant. people werer
quite so jealous, a lot more friendly. you’d meet everyone

i've always taught, all my life except when i was in the service.
this is way before you can practically imagine, but when i was a
junior in high school, it was a small town and we couldn't get a
teacher. i mean a teacher quit at christmas. we couldn't find a
replacement, it had to be a music teacher. i started out to be a
music major, so i taught music classes for the rest of the year.
that's when i knew i wanted to be a teacher.

everybody is so concerned about grades it just makes you sick
sometimes. the accounting firms have caused it cause they look
at grade-point to weed people out, we look at grade-point to get
in. even students who are already in the school, they think ac

i love to go to theater in new york but i don’t do that too often. i

i was born in new york city. i lived in new york state for 21 years; in the city till i was 11
and then nassau county, like all my students. i have a bachelor’s degree in math and a
phd in sociology. i really liked math. it’s elegant. the switch was for a couple of reasons.
at the time i couldn’t see what i could do with math except be an actuary or work for
ibm, and i didn’t want to do either. if i could have thought of something to do with math
that interested me i probably would have Stayed. but it was also 1969 and i wanted to
be relevant. it was the beginning of the women’s movement and still the height of the
anti-war movement. the sociology department where i was was quite good, in fact i
found it more challenging than math which was very easy for me. the head of the
sociology department was a really nice old german hegelian type who believed in
education and used to have parties where he would invite good undergraduates and
faculty. we'd actually sit down and do those things education was supposed to be
about, sit around and talk about ideas. he said look, sociology really needs someone
with math training and you're a sociology minor, why don’t you go to grad school in
Sociology. since i couldn’t think of what to do with math it sounded like a good idea.

— professor christine bose sociology

when i first got to teaching i tranquilized myself. i have a real fear of getting up

there; get

wasn't that much difference between my age and the student’s age, so it was

time, especially given my lecture Style. when i get fifty or so no one will know

compare and contrast people and man: the history of man, the
history of people. man’s search for meaning. people’s search
for meaning. man discovers the wheel. people discover the

there’s only one of him. one tall, jut-jawed, clear-eyed, well-

(continued from p. 230)

‘i walked into someone who remembered me from
a card game freshman year. there are so many
memories, and people that i have made an impres-
sion on, but they are stuck in the back of my head.
just the same, many people have impressed and influ-
enced me. professor edward s. thomas gave me a
great sense of interest and motivation in his courses,
and towards my goals. there is always a spot in my
heart for him.”

“i have taken many people for granted. they were
always there when you needed them. it is hard to say
good-bye. four years of my life passed so quickly. i do
not think i could handle another fifteen hard credits,
but i am not ready for the business world.’

‘i visited other schools, but did not see this one. so
i tried pot luck and wound up in albany. i believe that
we are semi-fated. an individual determines his input
into the situation and fate has to be with you. in other
words, a little good luck never hurts anyone-’’

“as a freshman, i had a social outlook on life. my
peers were all that mattered. i enjoyed exercising and
dancing. i procrastinated studying. however, after a
year, i realized it was important to enjoy the subject
matter of my courses. i could say i wasted my first
year, but actually i needed that year to develop in
other ways.”

“sophomore year i moved to dutch quad. it lacked
the craziness of state quad. my roommate lori and i
were thinking of a different way of meeting people,
when we were struck with the idea. let’s buy a beer
ball and offer a drink to people riding up and down the
elevator. we did it on a friday afternoon and figured it
would be a blast. some people rode up and down with
us, but most were not willing to jump on the band-
wagon.

twelve months ago, this day seemed impossibly far away. 295 pages later the end is almost in sight. i am
happy and relieved to be done, but also sad and unsure. what will i do, now that i don't have the yearbook
as my constant companion. inevitably iam tempted to defend or explain this book, but i will resist the urge.
i hope that it can stand on its own. i am left with one last responsibility, the happy task of thanking those
who helped make torch '83 a reality.
gary gold — thank you for everything and so much more. to say this book would have been impossible
without you is an understatement.
tony and suna — for being good friends and good teachers and for understanding like only yearbook
editors can.
laura — for being consistent like pudding, and for doing so much of the dirty work.
mike — for the senior section and a lot of hard work.
jackie and andrea — for being the best of friends, and for putting up with my never ending complaints,
worries, and ideas about the yearbook.
photo service — for another year of hard work and good prints, and for four years of happy memories.
dave a. — for a beautiful table and drying cabinet.
alan c. — for four years of hard work without a complaint, and for the good prints.
scott birge — for constantly being there when something went wrong, even if he couldn't get it fixed.

yesterday a child came out to wonder
caught a dragonfly inside a jar
fearful when the sky was full of thunder
and tearful at the falling of a star
then the child moved ten times round the seasons
skated over ten clear frozen streams
words like, when you're older, must appease him
and promises of someday make his dreams

and the seasons they go round and round

and the painted ponies go up and down

we’re captive on the carousel of time

we can’t return we can only look behind

from where we came

and go round and round and round

in the circle game.
sixteen springs and sixteen summers gone now
cartwheels turn to carwheels thru the town
and they tell him, take your time, it won't be long now
till you drag your feet to slow the circles down
so the years spin by and now the boy is twenty
though his dreams have lost some grandeur coming true
there’ll be new dreams, maybe better dreams and plenty
before the last revolving year is through

and the seasons they go round and round

and the painted ponies go up and down

we're captive on the carousel of time

we can’t return we can only look behind

from where we came

and go round and round and round

in the circle game
