STATE COLLEGE NEWS. FRIDAY

PERL ANY um

PAGES

Sick, Sick, Sick

With the second semester underway illness is not a
very pleasant topic with which to concern ourselves; but
whether we like it or not, it surrounds us. The sad part
about possessing some of the current diseases is the fact
that they are not likely to remain our own for long. It
certainly should be evident that State College needs an
infirmary.

If one becomes ill in a dormitory or group house, his
only recourse is to visit the school medical office for treat-
ment, except in serious cases when a doctor is asked to
visit the student. Though every attempt is made in a
tormitory to aid a student suffering from an illness, dorm-
itory life is hardly conducive to convalescing. Very little
sonsideration can be given to provide a special and appetiz-
ing diet for a sick person, and often the usual noise and
clamor of group living proves trying when one attompts
fo gain extra rest needed for recovery. Crowded living
quarters also contribute to the spread of any current

epidemic, and students left by themselves to treat their
ailments are often guilty of total neglect

Most substantial colleges and universities have in-
«dirmaries where special care can be given to those who are
ill. Surely a college with an enrollment the size of ours
could make provisions for such a service. The new campus
provides an infirmary, and we are glad to see that the
planners have realized such a need, but what are we to do
in the meantime? A problem of adequate and proper
facilities a serious one, but a small sacrifice for health
standards is certainly better than sacrificing the health of
the entire student body

And now we pause for a brief message from our spon-
sors .. . Editors and reporters of all talents and interests
come, stay briefly and pass away only to be remembered
on yellowed mastheads, but the News has been published
regularly for the last forty-six year The existence of
the News depends upon the voluntary assistance of stu-
dents. In this first issue of the semester we are asking
for your support

What are the advantages of our product? Of course
there is the oft-stated satisfaction of doing “good works.”
Another advantage is “on the job training.” No experi-
ence is needed. All we require is an interest in journalism
and the will to work. As you probably know, many young
teachers are asked to “advise” their high school paper.
Having had training in journalism is an aid in the honored
art of job-finding,

IY you would like to help us with the News,
come to the Publication Office in

“I like to teach swimming, soft-
ball, and tennis, but I like to teach
people hest."" Miss Marion Huxley,
a member of the physical educa-
tion department, and an advisor to
WAA, often conveys this feeling to
her students.

Miss Huxley's teaching career
did not begin in 1959 when she first
came to State. She began teaching
ata Texas high school, after com-
pleting undergraduate study at
The University of Texas. She re
ceived her M.S. degree at Louisi
ana Stale University where she
taught for two years. She then
went on to teach at Arkansas State
University and Corpus Christi Uni
versity

In the three years she has spent
here, Miss Huxley has seen an im
provement in the percentage of
participation in) our intramural
program

Miss Huxley adds a likeable per-
sonality to her teaching, admits
that procrastination could be her
favorite hobby, and suggests that
she is not a typical prof. She en-
joys sitting and talking with her
students, sometimes over a cup of
coffee. The discussion might range
from the previous night's intra-
murals to music, photography,
that tough history course" or the
biggest” state in the Union—Tex
as, But she admits with some hesi
tation that Texas is not the best
place to gather the cypress knees
which she boils, sands, and fin
ishes into beautiful lamps and cof-
fee tables. These she has collect
ed from the Bayous in Louisiana,
where the summers are much too
long and hot

Miss Huxley likes the Kast, es-
pecially its variety of seasons and
its variety of trees. As she puts it,
“Is purty!" She also enjoys
reading, music, and obviously,
teaching, Physical education, Tex
as, Miss Huxley, and her students
are almost inseparable
