Wrestlers at Wilkes Last Week; Peds Place Third in NAIA Tourney;
Meet C. W. Post on Saturday

During the Christmas ation
while everyone was home enjoying
the holiday and all that goes with
it, six Statesmen were working hard,
trying to win a wrestling match.
These six grapplers, Clem Crow,
Joy Katzel, Van Brower, Dick
O'Connor, John Woytowich, and
Ted Dusanenko, were entered in the
1960 Wilkes Tournament at Wilkes
Barre, Penna,
The Wilkes Tournament is an an-
nual affair held each year at Wilkes
College. To the tournament come
wrestlers from the North, South,
and Mid-West United States and
from approximately thirty colleges
and universities. United States
Olympic champs, NCAA chamons,
and precious Wildes Champs are
among the royalty of wrestling
present
This year, about three hundred
and fifty wrestlers from such col-
leges as: Pitt, University of Michi-
gan, Army, Navy, Yale, Harvard,
Ohio, Lockhaven, and many others
were present. Pitt won the team
award with University of Michigan
coming in second, Carmen Melino
of NYAC won the award for the
Most Outstandin Wrestler. Carmen
was originally from Cornell.
Clem Crow of Albany was unfor-
ttinate to draw Gary Simmons who
was the U.S, Olymbpic wrestler in
the 115 pound division at Rome
Italy last year. Simmons has also
won a previous Wilkes champion-
ship and the NCAA championship
Clem wrestled a very good match
against his fine competitor, losing

by only two points, 6-4.
The other flve Albany men also
wrestled fine matches but also lost
by decisions. Their opponents were
all topnotch wrestlers and much
was gained by all concerned. The
Albany Varsity wrestling team has
benefitted highly from the exper-
fence gained throuch this tourna-
ment and the results should soon
show up in the performance of the
team.
CW Post Has Fine Show At Wilkes
The CW Post wrestling team also
attended the Wilkes Tournament
and wound up in a good position
Several wrestlers from CW Post
finished among the top four.

State’s basketball team, fresh from a third place finish in the District 31, NAIA
Christmas Tournament held in Montclair, N.J., face Hobart College tomorrow night at
8:30 in Page Hall.
The Peds, 7-3, captured third place by defeating Glassboro State College 70-56 Friday
night after losing to tournament favorite Maryland State 45-35 in the semi-finals the
previous night.
State earned the right to meet Maryland State by defeating Howard University of
Washington, D. C. in an elimination contest held Tuesday afternoon. The Sauersmen
trailed early in the game but were sparked by Roger Casey who came off the bench to
arouse his lethergic teammates by scoring ihree quick hoops that gave the team a lead
that was never relinquished.

The series started in 1939, with

Bill Frankonis Accepts Editorship;
Wister Becomes Managing Editor
William Frankonis '62 was elected Editor-in-Chief of the State College News for
the year 1961-62 at the News Board meeting held Monday evening. Frankonis replaces
Barbara Libous ‘61. Irene Wister '63 will move from Associate Editor to Managing Editor,
a position previously held by Robert Gebhardt ‘61, Miss Libous will remain a member
of News Board and assume the title of Consultant Editor-in-Chief.
Four new Associate Editors have been
selected. Mary Lou Eisenman, Linda Las-
selle, and Doris Muhlich, Sophomores, and Barbara Hall ‘62 will each be responsible for

State Drops CW Post Match;
Meets Oneonta Wednesday
Saturday, January 7, State played host to a power-
ful C. W. Post wrestling squad. For the past two years in
a row, Post has beaten State when they both met. This
year the State grapplers again lost to a very strong team.
The final score of the varsity match was 22-6, in favor of
C. W. Post. Winning for Albany were Dave Pause and John
Woytowich
Pause decisioned Bill Serynek of C. W. Post by a score
of 8-6. He wrestle! a good match with plenty of action
all the way through. This brings his record up to three
wins and one loss. As of the time this story was printed,
this was the best record on the team. In terms of team
score Pause has won 11 points and lost 5.
John Woytowich, the other State winner, also won by
a decision, beating Post's Guy Wormald, 10-5. This brings
his record to two wins and two losses. Woytowich has been
doing some fine wrestling this year and shows all signs of
improving. Also, he has been wrestling in top-notch com-
petition this year and has been doing fine despite it

By midnight tomorow we will know whether State's
powerful offense triumphed over Siena’s sticky defense
The Sauersmen will be matching a better shooting
ability, stronger rebounding potential, and a deeper bench,
against Siena's poise, ager veness, teamwork, and rough
defense. The Peds are also more familiar with the Armory
this year than they have ever been ,
The Best Offense Is...
The Indians coach, Dan Cunha, has personally scout-
ed the Peds three times this year. In all three games, the
aggressive defense used by the opposition succeeded in
slowing the Sauersmen and gave them quite a bit of
trouble. For this reason Ped mentor Dick Sauers expects
the Indians to rely heavily on their vaunted defense. As
a counter the Statesmen will most likely play a deliber-
ate offensive game, taking only the best shots and hoping
their scoring average will be better than it was last year.
Similar To Maryland State Game ,
The Peds will be playing a style of game similar, but
less extreme, to the one they used against Maryland State
in the Christmas Tourney. Gone from this game will be
the great height advantage enjoyed by the opposition

The Records
State goes into tomorrow's game with a 9-3 record
The Indians spot a six and five record against stiffer op-
position. Three of their victories were upsets over powerful
and highly favored Canisius, Buffalo, and St. Francis of
Brooklyn. Last night the Indians played Utica, a team the
Peds met and defeated earlier this season, 76-50.
The Chessmen
Just as in a game of chess the opposiing coaches have
planned their strategy, the rest is up to the players.
Siena is led by senior guard Jim Woodward, who is
averaging 14.8 points per game and was an honorable
mention in the weekly ECAC major college all-star team.
Others starting for the Indians will be Huntingdon,
Healy, Ahearn, and Gary Smith
John Wallace and Jim Oppedisano will start for State
at forwards, They will be joined by Sherwin Bowen and
Roger Casey, who is ailing, al guard. Don Cohen averag-
ing 18 points per game and who is recovering from a touch
of the flu, will start at center
Freshmen Game
The frosh teams of both schools will meet in the pre
liminary at 6:30.
Siena, according to all reports, has a green team, al-
though they sport several good players
